My name is Dave and I'm an EDA newbie ;-) I saw Jewel in concert for the very first time back in March at New York City. It was quite an experience. Before the concert, I was already a big fan, but I still could never understand the icon status that any artist may be elevated to. Sure she has an INCREDIBLE voice (God, I love her voice), and she is quite beautiful, but an icon, I could never comprehend why... until I saw her in person. :-O There was something about the way she presented herself, the stories she tells the audience about her life, the reasons why she wrote some of her songs (ie. for one of friends who had died), it made look upon her as not just another singer, but someone deep, profound, and caring who sees all the darkness and hatred in the world yet only focuses on the little light and goodness that exists (I don't know why I felt this, but I did - - maybe 1 too many cans of Mountain Dew). I walked out of the concert thinking to myself, "This is the kind of person I want to be!" So I try to live everyday by what I feel are her beliefs: Kindness, Tolerance, Understanding, Love, etc. - All those traits which make us slightly less human than the world we see around us. I can see why people look up to her and put her a pedestal. I do too now. And it's nice too know that there are almost a thousand people who feel the same way that I do (maybe I didn't OD on the DEW ;-P Anyways, on a lighter note I had originally decided not to spend a single cent at the concert. Instead I blew $50 bucks some t-shirts and a program and spent the next week rumagging around Greenwich Village trying to find any rare (anything but PoY) Jewel stuff (no luck)! :-( Oh, I recently blew 65(thank God for my job) bucks at an AUCTION (I know it's bad word) for Jewel's STL. Hopefully, I should be receiving it soon. I'll post up a note when I do so if anyone wants a copy (you provide the tape and the return postage) I will be happy to do it for you (unless I'm legally prevented from doing so, if so someone please let me know...). I only ask that you spread the 'Joy of Jewel' around and make copies for your fellow EDAs (This will awesome relieve some of my mental anguish for spending $65 on a CD). Well, take care angels and be good to each other and everyone else :-) Happy to be an (Newbie) Everyday Angel, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 17:38:35 -0700 From: davester Subject: Jewel B-Day I had a idea that I'd like to share with everyone. I thought I'd share my personal reflections on discovering Jewel and what it means to me. I'm a lot older than most EDA's. I grew up listening to people like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell and, even though I loved their music intensely, I've never been in anyone's "fanclub". But, when I discovered Jewel, she stood out as a lighthouse in a sea of mediocrity. Her positivity and spirit of kindness and respect are a fresh breeze in the stagnant cynicism that we've been so deluged with lately. This is probably YET ANOTHER HOAX. The only way a virus can get into your computer is as an executable file. That means a Macintosh or Windows application, control panel or utility, Java applet, ActiveX control, Shockwave Applet or macro. Binary files like those sent to the list get trashed (a standard policy on a good many lists). and not redistributed. I had hoped after the Good Times hoax went around a few times that would be the end of it. I guess not. In fact, computer users are getting more and more paranoid with each passing scam. If somebody you don't know sends you a file, don't unzip/unstuff the thing. Just toss it. However, the point stands: You need virus protection. Angels, you need virus protection because not everything in your inbox comes from a list with a concientious system admin running it. You need it because you probably download games and shareware and stuff to watch Jewel on Mediadome. You need it because your roommate/parent/significant other/ dog/cat messes with your computer when you're not around. Here are the URLs with info for McAfee ViruScan for the most popular platforms. It's not that I have the right to judge anyone, but I'm not gonna let someone who only says, ( literally ) "Poop, poop, poop" when they post adopt anyone else. Can you imagine ? IF you are interested in becoming an adoptive parent, please visit my newbie website at http://www.thespis.com/newbies and fill out a little survey so your newbie can find out more about you. "Hands Manifest Thought" is perfect to fit in the three lines we have and baby blue is a good color for them I think. If we end up not doing the pick thing I think we should still make them so guitar playing angels like myself can have something special to use. I had another slightly obscure idea for her birthday: why don't we custom-make an EDA guitar (have Danny Ferrington make it) -- how much are custom made guitars -- 1000 clams? If everyone chipped in like $10 or whatever they felt they could afford even if it was just a penny I am sure the $$$ would manifest itself -- it always does. Some could do the picks still and some could do the guitar. I can do up to like 300 bucks if anyone wants to seriously do this. :) What ever happened to the EDA playing cards too -- the idea just kind of floundered away. To whoever asked if Jewel smokes, Steve told us at HDF during the interview or shortly after that Jewel does not smoke, drink or do any drugs. To quote Steve, "She is extremely healthy." Also, I am not having a big party at my pad in June since I will be moving down south then and doing a whole bunch of concerts around then too. So maybe I'll have one this summer sometime when I get settled down in Ocean Beach, San Diego. I just saw No Doubt perform last night and it was quite a show. :) :) :) Sacramento was the first date off their first headlining tour ever and the first stop back from doing European showcases. It was rocking bigtime. To paint the scene, when No Doubt came on I made my way to front row on the floor without even moving my feet voluntarily. I ended up bruising my chestplate (from being pressed against the stage fence -- they should have padded fences) and both shoulderblades and finally had the security pull me over half way into the show where I collapsed. What a rad show. :) I had on three shirts that got completely soaked with other people's sweat and fainted a couple times from lack of air. My arms were pinned in the air for a while (and are very sore today). If they are coming to your town soon I definately recommend seeing them (Gwen has a beautiful voice live despite rumors that she does not) but only if you like big moshing concerts where you get thrashed -- the true mark of a good concert if you walk away from it highly injured. :) Cake and another band I forget opened up, the arena was the fullest I've ever seen. The lighting and staging was the best (until I see U2 later this month). Tim, Dan can you help me out? What is Tara's best (or only) album to get -- and Paula Cole fans what do you recommend? I was up watching MTV the other night and this three member band that was very good came on but the thing is that they were only in 7th or 8th grade it looked like. They are called Hansen, Mercury is their label and the video is for "MMMbop". I recommend hearing them and getting their album because they are good. --JE ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 21:42:12 -0400 From: Dan Stark Subject: MuchMusic Sunday- more info Hi, I already got a few people writing back to me, asking what MuchMusic is, so I figured I should post the answer to the list for anyone else who may not know. MuchMusic is Canada's cable music channel, like MTV or VH1 in the U.S. MuchMusic is available in America on some cable systems, as well as 18-inch mini-dish and large satellite systems. The American feed of MuchMusic differs from the Canadian feed slightly, so I'm not sure if the Much West program is on the American feed at the same time as the Canadian version, or at all. But they have a website at http://www.muchmusic.com if you feel like looking for the info. Anyway, in Canada, Jewel will be interviewed on MuchMusic this Sunday night at midnight EST (9pm Pacific) during the Much West program. Hope that helps some of you. Probably closer to 5 times that for a custom spec'd hand made guitar. Even more if the luthier is well-renowned. Could do a lot of good with that kind of money to the right charities... It would be neat, though... definately not an every-day present... and you can figure at least a couple of months lead time to get one made... Guitar choice is an EXTREMELY personal thing, though... She is a really good >canadian artist! I've seen her cd's in the states but don't know any >americans who like her! Amanda Marshall used to be one of my favorite artists. Back in 1991/92, I would go watch her play in the Toronto-area bars every time she would play. She was about 19 then, and she didn't write any of her own songs but picked very obscure tunes to cover, or reworked well-known tunes so drastically they virtually became her own. Her performances were so powerful that before long, people would be lined up down the street by 7pm for her 11:00 club shows, and this was without a CD or any radio play to help her. Then she disappeared to work on an album, and when it came out, I was really let down. She got hooked up with some formula hit songwriters, abandoning the soulful blues and roots that had made up her shows. The album is an over-produced collection of unimaginative songs written by a couple of guys who I've never been very impressed with...the same deadly duo behind Alannah Myles, who sang the hit Black Velvet a few years ago. I think it sounds like manufactured music aimed at the Celine Dion crowd, and it has little in common with the Amanda Marshall I liked so much 5 or 6 years ago. It's still worth seeing her perform live though, her voice is amazing and there is a power in her live performance that must be seen to be appreciated.
