But because men and women in our culture are raised according to confused notions about relationships between the sexes, fathers often have a very difficult time understanding their daughters and expressing love for them. It sounds as though some of these confused notions may sometimes cloud your dad's ability to communicate with you the way he wishes he could, and that is a sad thing. It is most important for you and other daughters, however, not to let your fathers' anger and unhappiness become your own, to fight for a sense of yourself that rises above the confusion. This is, of course, not an easy thing to do. > i think more parents need > to > try and see things from their childrens point of view, then mabye they > will > understand us. i think the way your parent acts toward you reflects how > you > will react to the world around you, and if the parent isnt caring and > loving > then it makes it harder for us, because we must work harder and strive to > be > different from their example. i observe the effects parents have on their > children very closley, because it does tell alot about how they will grow > up. Yes, our parents are the ones who, first and foremost, give us a sense of our place in the world. If our parents are crippled by their own upbringing, lacking the ability to share love and strength with their children, we must do as you say: "work harder and strive to be different from their example." As the father of a daughter, I know that my child is relentlessly bombarded by the negative information about women that is so prevalent in our society, and that I cannot shield her from messages that would challenge and diminish her sense of self-worth. What I can do, however, is keep her well nourished with information that fortfies her self-esteem, and teach her to become familiar with the sources from which she can can, on her own, draw power and self-love. Most importantly, I can listen to *her voice*, and struggle to hear it as clearly as possible. > i have seen it with my friends... the ones whos parents try to be as > understanding as possible and love them no matter what are usually the > happiest kids... and if your parents neglact you, or whatever if you are > not > strong you can become a very messed up individual. It is a great gift to be well-loved as a child, as you say. But if we are neglected, misunderstood, even abused as children, we do have the power to rise above our mistreatment. We can't let anyone "determine our future just by how they act towards" us. It's apparent from what you've written that you already know that. > wow, sorry, but i'm just a bit emotional tonight, and i've been wanting > to > post this for soo long, but never quite knew the right words to use. and > thank you gary for giving me a reason to write this. They posted a message a few days ago saying that they'd have news soon. We are waiting to hear what those plans are. In addition to that, an idea has met with considerable agreement to name Jewel's birthday "Angel Day", a day for us to do whatever we feel inclined to do to help others, the planet, animals, or in some way manifest the spirit of kindness in our lives. The idea is that "Angel Day" would be a reminder to live a life of respect and kindness every day all year long. The latest idea is to have some custom guitar picks made perhaps with the words "Everyday Angels" on one side and, on the other side, the drawing of an angel that Jewel often gives people when she signs autographs. There are also some people who have expressed that they'd like to send Jewel poems or pieces that they've written about what she means to them. However, this has already been done several times by EDAs. If anyone has anything to add, please do. So here's my long version! Tim, Liz, and I travelled to Cleveland for the weekend to hook up with Mia, first to attend the play was stage managing at Case Western Reserve U., then to see Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel Sunday night. Tim already had transportation, so I stopped in Toledo enroute to pick up Liz, and treated her to a "leisurely" drive down the Ohio turnpike, listening to the new Ani Difranco CD full blast. Saturday, we spent time in the hip, trendy area of Cleveland, which is a full 2-block area consisting of some record stores etc., then later we all hung out at Mia's. Sunday, the play was actually quite impressive...a visual treat with lots of cool effects, and totally pro. I didn't know those CWRU students had it in 'em. ;) After the show, Liz sat in the lobby doing homework while Tim and I helped the crew tear down the stage, a not-so-minor procedure that we eventually had enough of, so we left for two-block trendy Cleveland again to find food while Mia wrapped with her crew. Tim bought a hot dog in honor of the night's upcoming entertainment, Liz went veggie, and I had the worst sub I've tasted in years. We carried these culinary delights across the road to the venue where Cindy Lee Berryhill & co. were to play, a bar that has somehow avoided being condemned by Cleveland's health board...by now it was about 8pm. Before I could even choke back my last bite of unidentifiable ground meat, a woman walked in who could only have been Cindy, so Tim, Liz and I walked over to say hi. A moment later Elizabeth joined us, who told us she would not be playing because there were 4 bands on the bill for the night (2 bad, loud local high school bands, then Cindy, then a loud punky band). When we told her we were friends of Larry, Igor and the gang back in San Diego, she told us how she wished she could play for us, and soon a quest was underway for an appropriate place for her to do just that! I remembered there was a trendy, overpriced coffeee shop just up the street, and Elizabeth grabbed her guitar and insisted we check into it! We did, and it looked perfect, so Elizabeth started to set up while I spun back to pick up Mia at the theatre. We returned to be treated to an amazing HOUR-LONG private performance at the coffee-shop table from Elizabeth, who played us a bunch of new stuff she's been working on, along with songs from her CD. Cindy sang backing vocals, did one song of her own, and the whole time she was also drawing pencil sketches of the entire event, which she took with her. The coffee shop was quite noisy, but a few patrons at surrounding tables noticed and joined us, or simply applauded from their own tables after Elizabeth's songs. Finally it was time for Cindy's show down the street, so off we went. By now it was almost 11, the last high school band was wrapping up, and kids were evacuating behind them (it was all-ages). Not only did we manage to get our original 'table' back, (a post surrounded by stools really), but I was delighted to see the remains of my sub were still on that table. Cindy took the stage within a few minutes, and played about a 50-minute set. The best part about Cindy's show is the 'instruments' she uses...I sense some Rugburns influence in the cheeze factor of it all. First she has a mono, $5 ghetto-blaster she uses to play samples on some songs. There is also a toy piano, and a Casio keyboard that a friend gave her for the tour. The Casio also has a bonus bad drum machine effect built-in, which Cindy used on one song. And she also played both acoustic and electric guitar. Elizabeth joined in for backing vocals on a few songs...it was all very entertaining and often extremely funny. Despite the fact no one seemed to pay much attention to the performance at the bar, they came out of the woodwork afterwards to buy a whack of CDs from both Cindy and Elizabeth. Soon the next band took the stage, and the 6 of us (EDAs, Cindy and Elizabeth) exited the bar before the end of the second chord (I think there were only two anyway so I'm sure we didn't miss much). Apparently Cindy and Elizabeth were anxious to get started on their drive to Boston right away, so we bid them, and each other farewell. The downer of the night is I discovered BASF DAT tapes suck as bad as their cassette tapes. I recorded both the coffee shop and bar sets with permission, only to discover that the data is unreadable on any of the 3 DAT players I tried to play it back on, so the memories must live in our minds, not our tape decks (sorry guys). I believe that paranormal phenomena do occur, but there is no scientific evidence for such things. To actually prove something using the scientific method, an experiment has to be REPLICABLE, that is, it has to be consistently repeatable under laboratory conditions. In different laboratories. In the known history of science, to date, no paranormal phenomenon has been consistently repeatable under laboratory conditions. Gravity, magnetism, other physical phenomena always work in the laboratory. A scientist might argue: if paranormal phenomena were real, they would stand up to scientific scrutiny. But in the history of science, NOT ONE paranormal phenomenon ever has. As I first mentioned, I believe that paranormal phenomena do occur. Somehow, I don't picture this: Hi Jewel (<---8 characters) the EDAs (<---8 characters) ......... "Somehow I'm never in tune with the way the world thinks. There were no announcements or tickets sold. I only found out about it as I watched the local CBS news. The people that saw her didn't know it either. All they were told was that a special guest would be appearing at the San Diegetos School auditorium. The appearence had something to do with a girl from the school that was killed. If I get more info, I'll report later. The short clip showed her talking to the gathered students about persuing there dreams. She did use the manifest word. She also sang I'm Sensitive. Then they showed her standing next to Lenedra as she adressed the students. Lenedra looked great. This happened only 15 miles from my home. I heard that she moved closer to where I live in the North County of San Diego. Now she is only 5 miles from my house and very close to the 39 that left their containers to chase a comet. Jewel's guitar being Big Blue and the fact that the video for YWMFM was all blue make blue the logical choice for me. As far as what to write, I think "Everyday Angels" would be the best. Maybe if we could put sayings on each side we could put "Everyday Angels" on one side and "Hands Manifest Thought" on the other. A lot of people have mentioned using any kind of Angel drawing on the pick. In order to get this done, whoever drew it would have to give permission on their copyright of the drawing- this goes for anything Jewel has drawn, or the JewelStock angel, etc. The same goes for any Jewel quotes. And, to get her permission, you have to tell her about the whole plan which sort of ruins the surprise. 2. No one's said what gauge of pick she uses. I know a lot of people know but I haven't seen it posted yet. She's very particular about it I believe. 3. Jewel has said over & over again how she doesn't really want people to give her stuff, plus she has suggested something to Alan (MrBB) already so maybe we should chill for a couple days. Sounds like a lot of inspired ideas on ways to celebrate Jewel's birthday. Seeing as how there's over 1000 of us on the EDA list(s), why not have everyone recognize and celebrate the occasion in the way that makes them feel best? People who are poetic can write poems and organize getting them to Jewel. People who don't write (or don't right now write) poems, can work on the angel guitar pick idea, or contribute to a favourite charity or charities or help out in the community or their friends and family in some way. (Or follow along with John-Eric's post about how one can get the day officially recognized by government!) People who are into the guitar pick idea and want to go one of the other ways can do that. Those who want to help make a donation to some worthy charity can all get together on that. And people who don't have money available to contribute to the charity fund, can do their extra special good deed on Every Day Angel Day. And so on, so that each EDA contributes and joins in the celebration in the way that is best for them and makes them feel a part of the whole and equal to everyone else. It's not like there's going to be an endless circle of choices -- with all the input of recent days it seems like there's four main ideas that different people like (those being the four idea mentioned in the subject line). If an average of 250 people (or however want to get involved) worked on each of the four different ways, we could still report back to everyone else on the way in which we individualized the day... Just a thought since we are all alike, yet unalike. I hope you'd agree that "extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof". Gravity exists in a lot more than six labs, if it didn't scientists would say, "Why only six? Maybe there is no gravity." Thank you for fully quoting Larry G. before me, but this makes it seem all the more strange that you would attack me for being "impolite" when all I was doing was using his same language, in an attempt to poke fun at it.
