SD and LA reviews Hello my angels, Liz here reporting on her fantasy trip to the LA/ San Diego area. I saw Jewel in concert a total of 5 times while out there!!! 2 shows at the Wiltern, 1 at UCSD....and the 2 other cool performances!!!! The first of these other performances was at the Boujua (don't ask me HOW to spell that...it is fun to say though!!) Pig. It was a small little coffee shop tucked away on the corner of a street. I was delirious because I had no sleep, and we got to the coffee shop at 4:20 AM. Tegan, John-Eric, and I were there to crash the KROQ Pajama party with Jewel. Well, not really crash it, just get in!! Well, Tegan and I succeeded and sat at Jewel's feet. It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I even got to ask Jewel a question on-air.....mine was the first question asked...I asked the usual "Would you rather be a fish or a star?" She also played Enter from the East at my request!!!!! It was cool because Tegan and I talked to her during commercial breaks. We got free coffee, snacks, and a black and white glossy photo of Jewel (Hits Cover). The other concert that I saw was the soundcheck in San Diego. That was awesome!! she sang the Swedish Song at my request!! When she was finished, we hung out with Jewel for a while and talked. It was so great!!! All of the concerts were so great!!!! Jewel and the burns were so wonderful. The highlight of my trip was definitely the Hotdog Fest!! What can I say?? My future husband was there!!!! He even said it himself!! (Thanks Tegan!!) On my hotdog fest t-shirt he wrote "I am waiting to marry you, Love Steve Poltz" Once again, thanks Tegan!! Actually, I consider Steve my friend...he is so kind. Stinky was there too. (Chelsey, Kaili, Sinjin, Shelly, Johnny C., Stinky, Shelly and I stayed up late contacting Cab Calloway...actually I fell asleep and Sinjin carried me to bed, what a sweetie!! there was also a mean spirit that didn't like Tom =)) I met so many nice people...Jason, John-Eric, Tom, Nancy, Chelsey, Kaili, Marc, etc. etc! You guys, the Morales/Boos family is my new adopted family!!! They are the coolest!! Thanks guys!! In fact, Shelly ditched me to stay with them until Monday!! =P~~ on you Shelly!! (I love you sis!!) Thanks to everyone that made my week so great, especially you Larry!! I miss you guys!! I just wish that my pleas to my mother had pulled through...=(. That is ok...I will be on the west coast again soon enough!! For those going to Java Joe's on Friday, tell Stevie I said hi!! hugs to everyone!! Love and hugs, Liz STEVE: I'm waiting to marry you...how old are you anyway? LIZ: 16 STEVE: Only two more years!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 00:06:09 -0400 (EDT) From: MikeMK@aol.com Subject: Fwd: JC:Foolish Games info? Sometimes my memory can be a little precarious, but to the best of my recollection, here is some stuff I learned in CAL: 1. After the Wiltern show, I asked John Castro to sign my poetry book. He commented that it was an older one, where did I get it? (NY). I asked what was different about it and he said that first of all, the Rugs were now listed as the band. The female drummer, he said, was gone. So I asked what happened to her as some of the list members were wondering. He said she quit. I asked why and he said "major personality differences w/Jewel". Stinky then crossed out her name and put in his own. No love lost, I sensed. 2. Dennis knows how to cook. (I mean in the kitchen). 3. I finally met Igor! Larry and I had devised a practical joke to play on him - since both Dennis & I were to be mystery guests, we were going to pretend to be Tammy & Rob. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance and when I finally got to meet him, I almost ran him over trying to park. (Sorry, Igor). I also met his lovely daughter, son, and wife. And in case anyone's wondering, Igor is a total pervert. :-) 4. Jewel commented during the sound check on the issue of sexy clothing and how silly it is when everyone gets in an uproar when she wears a glamorous outfit (or something like that - maybe someone with a better memory could tell it better). 5. She also, it seems, finally "got" why Tegan keeps giving her grape lollipops, referring to the cigarette issue (I think she called us f***ers after that - of course, it was said with love). 6. Steve confirmed that Jewel does not drink, smoke, or take drugs for those of you who need to have that information. He said "she's extremely - pause - healthy". 7. Igor and I have officially been dubbed King and Queen of the Llamas. This came about when two llamas manifested themselves right in front of us at Paramount Studios not one hour after I had arrived in LA. We had to pull Larry from his knees and stop him from screaming "IT'S A SIGN!!" before security could get there. 8. I think I heard every possible twist on "hands manifest thought" ie. hands manifest chicken and... well, you get the idea I'm trying to manifest. 9. Drunk people can't yodel, but they sure seem to enjoy trying. Good thing I wasn't one of them AND I had a video camera. HEHEHE. Sinjin, you can buy the tape for $1,000. Okay, I did try yodeling the next day at the Morales'. Luckily no cameras, though. 9. The Rugburns are touring again this summer - they are going to follow the same route as the Tiny Lights tour with a couple added stops! YAY! 10. Jewel's new slogan for Nike: Just Did It (referring to the Heaven's Gate cult - they were all wearing black Nikes.) 11. Steve had NO IDEA there was any kind of hot dog theme in his or Jewel's music. He said someone had asked him about it recently and he thought about all his songs that mentioned hot dogs and vowed the next album would have no references at all to hot dogs. He also couldn't think of a single Jewel song with hot dogs in it. Hmmm. He seemed sincere. Maybe they just really like hot dogs? (Steve takes his with just mustard if your planning to have him over in the near future). THE SOUNDCHECK: We were very lucky to get in. A couple of people had the ticket stubs from the show awhile back that Jewel didn't show up for (this was like a makeup). They said they were allowed to let in 100 people. 93 showed up with the tickets so they let the rest of us in! At first they had us seated way back in like the 30th row. Jewel came out and tried to talk to us but we had to yell. Finally someone asked if we could come closer and she said sure. Security had sorta funny looks on their faces as they were forced to let us under the yellow rope. So there we were in the first 3 rows and Jewel was talking a lot and joking. She even said at one point "I don't know why I'm having so much fun at this soundcheck"! Someone answered "because it's your last concert!" and her face got sort of distraught and said "my last concert - - EVER?!!" She asked for requests (non-album only) and asked if anyone had seen her before (Ha! Little did she know!) Of course, when we started to yell out things like Jessica and Money and Innocence Maintained, she started to clue in! I yelled out for Buttercup and she stopped in her tracks and asked me what I said. Then she asked if we knew that Buttercup was IM turned inside out. We all sort of nodded. She ended up playing IM instead, though. She also did Emily, Enter From the East, The Swedish Song and I forget what else. After the sound check, we went up to the stage to talk to her (to security's dismay again) and some girl asked her why she didn't do any songs off the album. DUH! I don't even have to tell you her reply. We showed her the giant 18 foot plaid banner we made for the Rugburns and she was really touched and said she appreciated the support we've given them. I know there was a lot more, but my memory fails me! Anyone else? Of course it has sexual inuendos, but I was under the impression that it was written from this sort of viewpoint and not in first person (which would be Jewel saying it to someone). After saying that, I don't think it matters whether there is anything about sex in it. I think it's awesome--because I happen to be a big fan of satire--that she is mocking this type of person. [ No offence intended to anyone at all *-) ] Well, I'm not always right so....(well, usually I am) Thanks, MIKE "She turned me into a newt!" "A NEWT?!?" "....Well.......I got better." So let's just take it as that, and for anyone squirming in their seats... it's just an opinion. My opinion is that Race Car Driver is a fun song about life. Yes I do believe that there are some sexual connotations in the song, but I wouldn't take it too far in saying the whole song is about sex. I think that it's about life, love, and the pursuit of freedom and youth. "Please be careful with me. There was a song in it by a female vocalist that kind of sounded like Jewel(angelic voice), but the sound was really bad in the theatre(seeing as it was a first run screening) Does anyone know if this was Jewel and if so, what song.
