I am currently working on 'Foolish Games' , 'You Were Meant For Me' , and 'Face Of Love'. I would like input on this so I know whether or not to continue working on them. (it takes a lot of my free time because I listen to the song, figure out how to play it and then sequence the score.) These will be quality midi files and would sound great on a high-quality sound card. (Foolish Games is about 1/2 done - got a lot of the piano track down, need to tweak a little, Face of Love is about 1/3 done - got all the guitar track done, and I just started YWMFM - this will probably be the best out of the 3). For a sample of each check out my web site at http://www.skyenet.net/~chasman/jewel.html. If there's enough interest I'll keep working on them and hopefully I can get them finished soon and post the finished versions. Also since everybody is posting what songs they think Jewel should cover I guess I'll add mine. I heard this song on the radio today and immediately thought of her. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." It's an oldie but almost all vocal(I forget who originally sang it, very beautiful voice, maybe some of you old timers can help me) and Jewel would sound WONDERFUL doing it. All of us well know the feeling of not having any AngelFood and yearning for it. I feel that the veterans that have been on the list for a while should have the highest commendation for getting things to the point they are at now but they might be burned out on making tapes and we all know that time is a precious commodity. I was reciently moved by a post by James Judd to consider my position and how I could return the kindness which he and many others have shown me. SO, I have made arangements with Terrence to set up a requset form on his AngelBase page so I can accept AngelFood Stamps. It will be a little different from what he has on there already for those of you who already have requests on his page. If you havn't been there I suggest that everyone check it out. It is a valuable resource for the EDA's and suggest we all take advantage of it. For this reason I will give priority to those who currently have requests on it when making tapes. I have made arrangements for J-Cards and should be able to facilitate spinning tapes next week after the page is ready. For you Newbies who may have missed it, it has been said before that the best way to get tapes is to wait until you meet some of the other EDA's at a show. Usually this is a good time to meet veterans and to get AngelFood. If you bring tapes with you to a show you are set. Keep this in mind all of you going to RockFest :) But, we all know that circumstances do not permit all of us to see Jewel in concert so I want to make what I have available to you. So, NEWBIES who need AngelFood just hold tight and next week I will make another post to the list to inform you where to go. I would appreciate any feedback from the veterans if there is any, espacially Mike, Dennis, Alan and Larry. And I would also like to thank Carrie, Terrance, and all the others who have recently been showing there kindness in the items they have given away. Poltz said that Jewel showed him pictures of sculptures she had created while she was a student at Interlochen, the arts high school in Michigan. They then started sharing with each other their songs. He said that he never thought Jewel would be a recording star then. No one asked Poltz if he ever saw an incredible talent in Jewel that would go far; we at the Hot Dog Fest should have asked that question but we didn't. The interview left with the impression that Steve Poltz never believed that Jewel had a special talent that would catapult her to triple-platinumhood; it was just two people sharing songs together. Poltz did say that he thought Jewel brought a fresh perspective to songwriting because she was new to it. For example her songs didn't necessarily follow the formula of verse, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus or whatever the formula is. This is because Jewel was new to guitar-playing at the time. He pointed out that he had written a song called "Morning Song" which caused Jewel to write her song called "Morning Song" that doesn't follow the formula. Similarly he pointed out that Jewel's songs are longer than the normal ones; an example is Adrian. Poltz noted that Bob Dylan was known for writing unusually-long songs that didn't follow the normal formula also and drew a parallel between Jewel's writings and Dylan's in that way. Jewel had the freedom, because she was new to songwriting to not follow the established formula. Note that most people who new Dylan in his formative years recognized instantly that he had songwriting talent that would take him far. Dave Von Ronk remembers asking him, "What do you do that makes you write so well?" according to one biography. I find it fascinating if Poltz did not see early that Jewel has a unique talent that will be successful fast. I can tell you that several of us early Jewel fans recognized that incredible talent the instant we heard her, and started E-Mailing or calling our friends. As a matter of fact almost everyone I met at Hot Dog Fest said the same thing, "As soon as I heard her sing I realized that...." Jewel does not grow on you like Tori Amos...you know almost immediately that you love her. Another interesting thing that Poltz said to a group of us, but not on the videotaped interview, is that he writes his songs on paper, scrawls them out on napkins, the back of envelopes etc, then memorizes them and throws away the orignianal. He does not know how to use a word processor. I asked him what about making changes, and he said it is more fun for him to make scratch-outs, and he has no interest in using a word processor to help make changes or edits. The above is based on my memory of the interview rather than reviewing the videotape. It started when she asked if her friend(Jenny) could borrow my Jewel CD because she had to learn to sing a song for her band. I played the CD one last time and it was still on the frist song when my sister came in, she said that the music sucked and to change it I think she was just trying to keep up her "rough, freak" image I don't see how anyone could belive that though because she is the nicest person I have ever met and I have had to retreve the cd from HER cd player more then several times. Well as the song ended she was like Jenny tought me how to sing this and turned it to song 3 which is "Little Sister" she turned up the volume and started belting it out, well I couldn't stand it so I sang along with her(you could praticly here dogs all over the world howling). Well when that was over she asked something about Doper I was like who is "Doper" well Doper is what she has named Steve Poltz after seeing him on Leno with, after seeing that performance I couldn't blame her. Then we got into a big discussion about whether Jewel does drugs or not, and she started pointing out parts of a song which was written with Doper(YWMFM) that she says practily prove it. That discussion was left at a stand still so we started sining again-this time we sang some songs that I had printed out from the Internet. We had no idea how the songs went so we sounded pretty interesting, maybe we can start a group but instead of people paying to here us thing they will pay for us to shut up. I recomend everyone trying this. Goodbye. ~*Chrissy*~ *************************************************I want a Golden Ticket daddy and I want it now. I want an Oompa Loompa daddy. Carrie ______________________________ Forward Header __________________________________ Subject: Swimming with Celery Author: RugburnsSD@aol.com at Internet Date: 4/7/97 11:16 PM OK, I'm lazy and I just finished touring, and I've got a big wart on my left toe and I'm going to go get a steak burrito soon so here's the letter I wrote to everyone a month ago but never sent because i forgot about it and didn't have anything else to say to you people but i posted this in the aol folder because i wanted to and because that's what i did and if you don't like it then come find me and we'll settle it the old fashioned way- a piss for distance contest. Um.. hello everyne i'm weeley nervous. this is cousin timmy's first post in the big city folder. I'm at the home of Stinky Feet Joe. Not to be confused with Stinky. We guzzled gin and ate hot dogs last night. My kind of night. Now that's what I'M talkin about. Tonight I'll be playing a very hungover show here in Shitcago. Why did I need to take a sleeping pill last night, as drunk as I was? I hope I don't end up like Karen Ann Quinlan. My manager Bob Duffey told me that next week the song I wrote with Jewel, You Were Meant For Me, is supposed to go to number one, so he says I'll be next to Babyface, but my name is going to be "Sh*tface." It was John's birthday yesterday, March 19, and we left that poor bastard all alone at Schuba's. Big deal. What's more important- his birthday, or my needs to find free gin? And frankly, we had overstayed our welcome at Schuba's, and they had started charging us. So we went to a bar Joe Daly knew of called "The Blue Room." (joe here- it's actually The Bluebird, but he was so drunk, he could have been at a gay Budda cabaret and he wouldn't have noticed), Yeah, whatever, Joe. All I know is that it was one of these trendy No Depression type bars (it was not- he's just mad because the bartender wouldn't laugh at his stupid smiles or give him free drinks). All I know is, I would have been much more at home in a leather bar with my mask on, being led around by my Master. (that's Bob Duffey). All I remember is standing at The Weiner's Circle, ordering a char dog and trying to make out with the girl who took my order (she looked like Shirley in What's Happening). SHe didn't want anything to do with me, but I know she secretly was winking at me. In fact, no one in the whole restaurant would sit near me, including Joe. I was just trying to make a friend, and when no one would talk to me, I finally took some old sleeping pill downer I bought from some drug dealer in DC. Joe Daly is such an idiot (I am not) in the cab ride home, he spilled mustard all over his shirt (he hit me, and that wasn't mustard...) I hate going out with a novice who can't handle his alcohol and sleeping pills. I had my way with him later (Ugh.) and I even got to wear my leather hood (Do any of you find this funny? I don't) Anyways, this tour is almost over, and will be ending April 5 in San Diego (that's California for all the remedial east coasters). Oh great, Joe, now I'm going to have some friend of the Notorious B.I.G.'s pop a cap in my ass while I wander down some San Diego street in a drunken haze. You can catch us in San Diego for a full length Rugburns show April 11 at Java Joe's (all ages- pedophiles welcome), and April 12 at the Casbah- 21 and up. So call your travel agents and plan on a beautiful San Diego weekend- sleeping pills not included. We'll be starting a full Rugburns tour in late April (Steve's breath smells like mustard gas and roses) of the whole U.S., and we'll also be doing some H.O.R.D.E. dates. So hopefully we'll get to meet Neil Young (oh, I'm sure he'll be giddy as hell to meet Steve Poltz ) and Beck (ditto). Shut up, Joe. I'm so sick of looking at your stupid face- why don't you get a haircut, hippy? (THis is coming from Simon Le Bon's bastard clone). Anyways, I have to go now and kick Joe Daly's ass (yeah, whatever, Chachi. Last time you tried that you became the first person to be subdued by a chocolate chip cookie). Oh, look at the wee man now, living on all your past glory (nice use of grammar, Elmer). I hate you, Joe. I've gotta go. (I hate you Steve, get out of my apartment. If Steve typed this letter, it would look like this: p;oihp stEve ah hi pruugburns jool is coole ai me m ginn gdrin;k a ;k ). Yours in Christ, Steven J. Poltz (Joseph P. Daly) P.S. We find that adult bookstores are the best place to go find them while we're touring. We've never found an email-capable computer in an adult bookstore, but we always seem to make the best of it. Long-assed chain letters suck. If you send us any, we will hunt you out and stuff heads of lettuce in non-accomodating orifices. AOL members can get all sorts of sordid gossip, information, and discussions about us by going to The Rugburns Folder: Keyword MMC (Control + K, then enter "MMC") Click "Alternative" Click "P-Z" IT'S RAINING CHATS AND DOGS! (OK, that was bad, but at least I have hair on my legs) Also there is a chat group that is trying to get together on Tuesday nights, 9 p.m., e.s.t., depending on how much everyone's been drinking, and whose dealers are around, etc. To get to this chat (or check in whenever you're on- someone else might be drunk and horny and in there, too): Keyword PC Click "List Chats" / or "List Rooms," depending on the version Click "Private Room" Enter the word "Treehuggerville" ALTERNATIVE MAILING LIST There's a group discussion list being started where people say stuff about us and God knows what else! It's Sunday morning, the big day. We all roll out of bed at about the same time... 10:00!!!!! We've got less than an hour to get everyone through the shower and dressed and set up. Yipe!!! So much for setting an alarm. Larry arrives with the coffee -- pecan? "I grabbed whatever was ready at the time." Good call, Larry. We're cycling people through the shower pretty fast. Who's next? Ah well, I'll just jump in... oh, sorry Tom. Relieve myself, undress, pull open the curtain... Hi Dennis. The prank was intended for Tom Proven; that's what I get for cutting in line. "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?" Out of the shower and in the backyard everyone is congregating. The living room is strewn with t-shirts ready for signing. There's a party sub sandwich, chips and salsa, and, naturally, beer. I join in on the sing-a-long and it occurs to me that I'm not that good a singer when sober. So I decide to remedy that situation. Not that being drunk makes me any better a singer, just that I don't realise it. ;-) "This would probably be more fun if they knew the words to the song." Johnny shows up with more beer, way cool. Marc whips out his mandolin, way cool. The girls hand out a bunch of Jewel and Rugburns word searches they made, way cool. Steve and Stinky show up.... well, you know. Sinjin shows up looking very cool in his uniform and with a surf board. I finally get to meet Kathy, a very nice woman. Many other people who I greatly enjoyed meeting but I find it difficult to sort through the names. Lunchtime, the hot dogs are ready. Plenty for everyone. "Hey Steve, what do you want on your hot dog?" "Mustard!" We sate ourselves and Tegan sets up the video equipment for the interview. The key to a remarkable, relaxed interview -- feed them. I won't go into the details of the interview, mostly because I don't remember them. We have a fun time talking and learning a little about who the "Rugburns" are and where they come from. Dennis wraps up the interview and is about to let them go when Nancy hands Steve a guitar. Steve just says thank you and immediately starts into a song. Stinky starts looking around for something to drum on. They played about six or eight songs, nothing you'd hear them play in a normal show. We just let Steve play whatever he felt like and he didn't let us down. "So I gave him his change." Meanwhile, Laura had to leave for her long, lonely bus trip home. What??? We don't think so, dear. Well we had no problem getting her a plane ticket so she could stay an extra day. It must've been on TWA -- "Travel With Angels." Steve still hung around a while longer afterwards, I hope he wasn't missing an appointment just to be with us. (Sound familiar?) It was long enough to get my Rugburns Rock shirt signed. He finally said his good-byes and left. What a guy, huh? "I love Toledo!" Stinky of course stayed with us until the end. Another California sunset, a bottle of Jim Beam, and our mother ship... err, the Hale-Bopp comet. I've got to get to LA to catch my plane tomorrow, so it's into the cars with Tom Proven, John-Eric, Dennis, Amy, and Larry. Many tearful good-byes, hugs all around, last-minute photos of the Harris Family (Tom, Dennis, Amy, and Stinky). I make sure I don't leave anyone out, hugging the snakes before I go. And then we head back to LA. "I love you guys." Tom makes a wrong turn off the interstate and we end up in the Bundy neighborhood of LA. Yes, that Bundy. I didn't see the house but I did think I saw a glove on the side of the road. We get going back in the right direction and arrive at the house just as the others are getting out of their car. Haul John off to bed and sit back to let the weekend wind down. We get to sleep early -- 1:00 The next morning we get up, shower, stuff our suitcases, and are out the door to get Amy to the airport -- Larry drives. We bid adeui to our favorite Llama. () Then check in Dennis's bags -- my flight is at 1:15p so they won't take them. Larry departs. () Dennis and I head out for breakfast and discussion for two hours. Then it's Dennis's time to leave. () I find a seat in the airport to wait to three and a half hours for my flight. *sigh* LAX is not a fun airport to spend that much time in. BTW, the Krishnas don't sell flowers anymore, now it's books. A bookstore in the airport was also playing "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic" by the Sundays, very cool. My flight is boarding already, I see the guy who got a gig with the Scorpians and we talk briefly. The usual airplane flight back east. I get to Pittsburgh and a guy starts talking to me coming off the plane. He's from Quebec and his business card describes him as an "Engineer, Programmer, Photographer." He says I should be a model. "What? Really??" I wonder if he knows who Michele is. I've got another hour to kill so I check out a Wall music store there in the airport. They're advertising Fiona Apple. Best sellers are $2 off, Jewel is at #5. I flip through the cut-out bins, ask about a CD that's on display, (I forget her name, she sounds like Debbie Carter). One last time through the store and I see "More Joy, Less Shame." Oh, cool... Ani. What else have they got? NaPG, Imperfectly, The Past Didn't Go Anywhere... huh? Utah Philips!?!! I've been looking for this ever since I heard it. Needless to say, I bought it. I also pick up a cup of coffee and head out for the terminal. The last leg home was uneventful, I got lots of reading done. Got home at 11:30p. Didn't get to check my mail. (Stupid computer... anyone got an extra hard drive they could spare?) Checked my major purchases. They are: Morning Wood CD, Rugburns Rock shirt, St. Doug CD, Tiny Lights tour book, The Sandman book (Season of Mist), Hare Krishna book, The Past Didn't Go Anywhere CD. I was dead tired and didn't go to work yesterday. Lots of thinking about my angels. I hope everyone who attended had a good time. Or if you didn't attend, that you enjoyed reading the reports. I saved a little of the joy so if you'd like some, just wish for it and I'll send it your way. - - - -- Blessed Be - ---pat "Those who look for life will be found by love." -- Aino Minako ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Apr 97 19:21:18 -0700 From: Greg Burrell Subject: Tape request Hi Everybody, Well, I might as well throw in my request too: I'd love to get a copy of Jeweltide or J.Rocks the Paradise or any other good tapes from the current tour. Subject: Does she reply??? i'm new to jewel@smoe.org and i was wondering if anybody has ever gotten a reply from her? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 23:00:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Tigger3938@aol.com Subject: The Great Jewel Sing Off, highlights from last night Hello everyone, The Great Jewel Sing Off started last night between me and my sister. It started when she asked if her friend(Jenny) could borrow my Jewel CD because she had to learn to sing a song for her band. I played the CD one last time and it was still on the first song when my sister came in, she said that the music sucked and to change it I think she was just trying to keep up her "rough, freak" image I don't see how anyone could belive that though because she is the nicest person I know and I have had to retreve the cd from HER cd player more then several times. That discussion was left at a stand still so we started singing again-this time we sang some songs that I had printed out from the Internet. We had no idea how the songs went so we sounded pretty interesting, maybe we can start a group but instead of people paying to hear us sing they will pay for us to shut up. I recomend everyone trying this. Goodbye. ~*Chrissy*~ *************************************************I want a Golden Ticket daddy and I want it now. I want an Oompa Loompa daddy.
