Adam - ----------------------------------- Monday April 7 8:17 AM EDT REVIEW/PERFORMANCE: Jewel Lackluster Without Band Jewel (Wiltern Theatre; 2,344 capacity; $22.50 top) By Troy J. Augusto HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - If Jewel proved anything in her two sold-out shows at the Wiltern, it was that the Rugburns should be her full-time backing band. It was -- almost without exception -- only when members of that nifty San Diego band joined her that her songs, which interminably focus on such depressing themes as obsession and mutual inadequacy, took on interesting and defining characteristics. But as it was, she spent most of the two-hour show either alone under a spotlight with her glittery blue guitar or accompanied by cellist John Hagen, settings in which the 22-year-old Alaska native (born Jewel Kilcher) failed to deliver. On their own, Jewel's sweet folks songs, sung in her semi-angelic though otherwise unimpressive voice, are sympathetic tales assembled in easily digestible pop frames. But strung together in a big concert as solo fodder, the material reveals itself as bland and repetitious. But the Rugburns came to the rescue. Beginning mid-set with You Were Meant for Me, the doe-eyed love song that's currently the No. 3 single in the country, and which Jewel wrote with Rugburns frontman Steve Poltz, the show took on a new and exciting vibe. The ensuing handful of songs, filled out by guitar, bass and drums, were vibrant and full of attitude, injecting much-needed spirit into both the crowd and the star. What a difference a band makes! With the right backup group (surely the Rugburns) in tow, Jewel's career could easily outdistance both of them. If she instead chooses to mostly perform as a solo act, the reverse will surely hold true. Presented by Hewitt-Silva. Band: Jewel, John Hagen, Steve Poltz, John Castro, Jeff (Stinky) Aafedt. As of right now, approximate dates are uncertain. They feel that the business setup on it needs some more thought. It will happen, but they'd prefer to set it up differently & it may not be ready until sometime this Fall, (though it may be ready for summer touring). 2) The EP: This is in the very tentative stages. A non-commercial EP is being considered. It will probably be made available through mail order to people on Jewel's mailing list & will not be available to radio or stores. The thought process is just beginning on this idea. Lenedra also mentioned that because this is in such an early stage of consideration, they really are not sure what this will end up being. The list will be updated as things progress. Please refrain from sending me emails about signup procedure or status on either of these subjects. I promise to post all appropriate info about them when the time comes. I purchased a PO box here this morning to handle the Tour/Poetry booklet mail orders. I'll post as soon as we get the instructions finalized. I know a lot of you are also interested in Tour t-shirts. Lenedra has offered to set something up with me on those as well. I want to make sure this can be done easily. This "tour booklet mail order" will be an experiment to see if this can be done without a lot of aggravation. If it runs smoothly, I will try to set up a similar situation with the leftover tour shirts. Please remember Amyjo & I are providing this service on a volunteer non-profit basis, because we love the EDAs. Your patience & cooperation will go a long way to making it an enjoyable experience for us, too. :-) There will be a #8 post regarding Jewel's birthday & the charity idea. Jewel herself, offered me a suggestion that I think will surprise everyone. There will be some more discussion about this toward the end of this week. A post will probably be made sometime this coming weekend elaborating on all this. As always, lotsa great things to look forward to...... The reviewer is entitled to their opinion ans this particular one obviously prefers more upbeat uptembo very musical and band played music to solo acoustic folk stuff. I personally think Jewel is so so so so so much better solo acoustic although occasionally she shines with a band(ie: Carnivore, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, Race Car Driver). So, take the bad reviews with a grain of salt, they are hopefully read by lots of people, the lots who only know Jewel from two songs and then show up at her concerts and don't get that she isn't a pop star. If you're not like me and for some reason like Jewel's mainstream popularity, take negativity with the same grain of salt, they are missing out on something that us true fans are in touch with enough to understand. I'm MIKE I also am new, and since everyone else is doing it, I decided to join the band wagon. My name is Michael Kelley (very Irish). I'm 22. I live in FL. I am a student at Rollins College (a very prestigious school for a poor boy--oldest in a family of eight--like myself) I am an Econ major but have a lot of interests in the Theatre and Music--I used to sing in a band. I found out about Jewel the first time she came to FL, unfortunately I had to work and never got to see her, but the radio station broadcasted alot of her concert live...I loved her voice but knew little of her music. I collect cd's so I started to collect whatever cd's of her I could find, which in FL was not very many. But I got a really good live cd and, let me tell you, I sort of fell in love. Not that I had ever seen her, I got this cd before the videos, but her personality and music was...as you all know. So, I stubled across this the other night, and joined. So far everyone has been SO nice, thank you all. Also, it was brought to my attention that something I posted was not liked by everyone...although Mr. DuckOfPrey (thanks for being so nice) said I didn't have to, when I was writing this I decided that this would be a good opportunity to apologize to everyone...so, please don't hate me...I didn't mean it, I apologize. Also, I'm very sarcastic and playful...so, if you meet me and I offend you or you don't know how to take me, I am usually playing around--it's a weakness! Thanks for the time~ Love you all, MICHAEL By the way, Foolish Games is my favorite song! I heard the VH1 Melissa E. special version of it and that's what made me fall in love. If anyone has the piano sheet music for that song I would love them for the rest of my life! I've picked out most of it but I'd like the exact music to make sure. Despite recent trends its still hard for women to get noticed in music. Unless they are cute. Crass, but that's what record companies, up til _very_ recently have thought people wanted. "My Angel" ______________________________________ Tranquillity abounds, Hear the joyful laughter and shouts of the children in the park. See the swings swinging and the clamor of little feet in the playhouses. I watch in awe; the children running, chasing. Without a care. The boy has spotted me watching him and runs by my side. It's if he has known me all of my life. His hair is blond and his eyes are brown. He reminds me of a long time ago. Our eyes meet and we are frozen in place. A stranger and a child. How drawn I feel to him. He smiles and makes me believe. Touching my arm and walking away. I hear myself cry out, "Little boy. What is your name?" He answers, "You know in your heart." It must be the sun or my eyes deceive me. He disappears, just simply gone. I pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming; This dream of my angel on earth. Flying back and forth to Europe, doing many Lilith Fair Dates, Rockfest 97, MTV unplugged, SNL, and maybe another headline tour at the end. I like all this exposure shes getting for herself and for her fans. But, I would hate to see her wear herself out like this, she rarely takes any time out for herself, (in her own home). Just look at how grueling that schedule is, and practically non-stop except for June. Not even her Birthday off. We all know she deserves a break and a rest. Ok, ok, maybe I'm concerned for selfish reasons.........when is she going back to the studio to re-record her new album!?!
