Some are more serious than others but this is just a list of everyone whose shown an interest. As the concert gets closer, I'll have this narrowed down to the EDA's that are *for sure* going to be there. If you don't see your name here and want to go, then please e-mail me, Farr, or Christina with your info. (Their e-mail addresses are below) Or if you see any incorrect info about you on this list, please let one of us know. Each name with a "*" by it means that this person has shown interest in attending the tailgate party being held Friday, June 20. As the concert gets closer, the "tailgate EDA's list" will be narrowed down to those that are *for sure* going to attend. *If there are any EDA's in need of tickets, please e-mail Farr. He has a few extras and may be able to help out. Also, if there is anyone else with "extra" tickets, then let Farr know as well. *Any EDA's that will need a place to stay OR can offer a place for other EDA's to stay, please e-mail Farr. He is compiling a list with this info. *Anyone that needs a ride or can give a ride to others, please e-mail Christina about that. She is keeping a list of carpool info. Also, if anyone sees another person here from their area on this list, you might try just sending them a letter to arrange a ride if possible. If so, please let Christina know so she can update her list. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** ROCKFEST '97 EDA LIST *** ============================= *Angela DiIulio - Fort Worth, TX - earthsis@spindle.net *Christina Ferrara - York, PA - cferrara@eagle.ycp.edu *Derrick Karacostas - Hitchcock, TX - dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu *Farr Shepherd - Tecumseh, OK - obie1@ou.edu *Demian Blair - Pittsburgh, PA - dblair@aecnet.com *Laura Capello - Kansas City, MO - cap8116@kcmetro.cc.mo.us *John Cummings - Columbus, OH - cummings.65@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu *Bill and Carrie Dallner - Chicago, IL - dallfin@flash.net *Duff, lastname - city, state - tjtalken@aol.com *Douglas Stephen Garay - Dallas, TX - dsg0001@jove.acs.unt.edu *Jon Hargett - Auburn, AL - e-mail address *Steve Mier - Omaha, NE - e-mail address *Luke Nye - Omaha, NE - jnye@probe.net (may ride with Steve) *Dan Stark - Windsor, Ontario - danstark@MNSi.Net *John-Eric Stevens - Roseville, CA - calstvns@ix.netcom.com *Amelia Vlah (Mia) - Cleveland, OH- asv@po.CWRU.edu (riding with Dan Stark) Angel , lastname - city, state - angel82@concentric.net Becca, lastname - Houston, TX - LikeHi@aol.com Dan Bogacz - Pittsburgh, PA - (riding with John Fisher) Tien Dang - Houston, TX - tdang2@Bayou.UH.EDU Dan Faissol - San Francisco, CA - faissol@home.com John Fisher - Cincinnati, OH - 2fishnet@concentric.net Kate Fisher - York, PA - (riding with Christina) Joshua Free - Manitowoc, WI - jdfree@students.wisc.edu Michael Garnett - Peoria, IL - garnett@webtv.net Tessa "Harris" - El Paso, TX - asset.moo@mail.utexas.edu Katherine Hendry - Blue Point, NY - khendry@ic.sunysb.edu Tyler Holsapple - Lubbock, TX - holsapple@ttu.edu James Judd - city, state - James.Judd@Eng.Auburn.EDU Karen, lastname - city, FL - KarenFL5@aol.com Stacy Katz - Houston, TX - stacy@nol.net Rachel Martin - Manassas, VA - ramarti5@vt.edu Ashe Mayfair - city, MO - mayfair@ponyexpress.net Thomas N. You can either go directly - --------> http://www.latimes.com/HOME/ENT/MUSIC/t000030159.html or you can read it below... Friday, April 4, 1997 Pop Music Review Jewel Shows Confidence in Mixed Set By SARA SCRIBNER, Special to The Times It's been quite a year for Jewel Kilcher, an Alaska native and former San Diego coffeehouse crooner who at one point lived out of her van to focus on her music dreams. With a Joni Mitchell-like voice and a wholesome aura, the singer was nominated for two Grammys and reached the Top 10 with two sweet, lilting hits: "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant for Me," from her debut album, "Pieces of You." On Wednesday, the first of her two sold-out nights at the Wiltern Theatre, Jewel (she uses just her first name) seemed far more confident than the giddy woman who played at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre last year. The transformation was riveting--for a while. Though she dutifully worked through her hits, Jewel was here to unveil her new songs, a wild mix that moved from a tune sung from the point of view of a murderous rape victim to message-thick spiritual folk dirges and country-tinged numbers. But the singer, who played most of the show solo with her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, was more appealing when delivering unadorned, aching folk-pop about boyfriends who leave or uncomplicated songs about innocence. The mostly young, female fans hung on her every word, shouting, "We love you, Jewel!" The love-feast feel would have been fine if Jewel hadn't wandered into the realm of folk-diva, whipping out daunting vocal theatrics that would have made Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey proud. The over-the-top approach turned Jewel's display of her yodeling skills--something that felt fun and refreshing last year--into just one more vocal trick. While Jewel is obviously aiming at moving her show beyond the simple coffeehouse set and into a bigger, arena-worthy act, her theatrics and religious references felt cloying. Most of her new songs staggered under the globe-embracing, Whitman-esque burden of her lyrics. It left you wondering whether she will be able to move beyond the realm of folk-pop underdog and become a strong, mature force in pop music. * Jewel performs tonight at RIMAC Arena, UC San Diego, 8 p.m. Sold out. Read this letter I found on an Alanis Mailing List. Um, guys, This Alanis stuff has got to go. If I wanted to hear about Alanis bashing Jewel or Alanis fans bashing Jewel or "Alanis is now dating Evan Dando," I'd subscribe to the Alanis list. Alanis list info: http://www.smoe.org/lists/cantnot.info Also, I don't like when fan communities become these loose advocacy groups. People will listen to Jewel on their own accord, or remain blissfully ignorant. Because of this, I don't care if any particular person in the world likes Jewel's music or not. It's nice that my friends do, and it's nice to talk with others that do, but I don't feel any compusion to spoon-feed anybody. Some listeners understand immediately, some will NEVER understand. As a list, we should provide well-thought criticism to the music, news about the artist, and establish a community. This third objective is getting trickier. One artist's list, launched in 1989, did not reach the critical mass of 1000 subscribers for six years. This list did it in less than three, thanks to the advent of the commercial Internet we know today. If we are to call ourselves Angels, we must keep the gate to our heaven open. If we close it with bickering, auctioning, indictments and vengance, we will lose it. - -- Reverend Angus avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Apr 1997 19:44:10 -0500 (EST) From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Jewel BORING?! Same album, two years later, the singer/songwriter is headlining two sold-out nights. Even more ironically, she's supported by San Diego's popular RUGBURNS, the band that helped her get her start. You can never tell who the fickle finger of fate will select. One 22-year-old girl with a guitar can make for a pretty dismal 90 minutes, but luckily JEWEL is an engaging performer with an angelic soprano and a vast repertoire. (Her A&R point man said that she had to sift through about 300 songs to make her album.) This night, she worked through much of "PIECES OF YOU," plus a song she made up on the spot, plus a sweet-natured kid's song .... she even threw in some yodeling. To flesh out the instrumentation, she occassionally brought up cellist JOHN FAGEN and THE RUGBURNS' rhythm section. It still lagged at times, but then a lyric like "A nation that starves for salvation/ But clothing is the closest approximation" or "You can be Henry Miller/And I'll be Anais Nin" would snap you to attention. Dramatic lighting on hugh screens and a floor strewn with candles (does the fire marshall know about this?) made a simple but effective backdrop. At the affecting close -- the haunting "ANGEL STANDING BY" followed by the crystalling "AMEN" --- the light glowed through a church window and JEWEL's voice winged to the rafters. JEWEL came out and sang one tune during the opening set --- and anyone who missed the opening act missed a lot. Folk-punks with sharp lyrics and a dynamic presentation, the RUGBURNS have long been local heroes. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Apr 1997 20:55:07 -0500 From: mskywalker@webtv.net (Matthew Turner) Subject: EDA Tribute to Jewel My homepage is completely up now! Didn't momma say that 'if you don't have something nice to say...' Duff's been on this list since... hell, who knows how long... Read your Jewelstock liner notes... It dosen't matter WHO it is, though. If someone asks for help and you can't help them, it's one thing... but to belittle their plight is pretty disturbing, at least to me. Come on... let's all make a pledge right now to not post stuff that has no redeeming value. It isn't that hard to strive to live up to the label 'Angel'. Of course, we'll all fail once in awhile, but this has been getting sickening... Peace, (please??) Rev. I'm perilously close to losing it over this item. :-( I know there are only a few thoughtless neo-angels out there who might respond so callously. But part of the whole philosophy of being an Every Day Angel is to try to empathize with our fellow humans, not to blow them off just because we have a nice cozy roof over our heads and they don't. I hope having a balanced checkbook lets those of you who equate math errors with homelessness sleep well at night. Each one of us is about 5 minutes away from being homeless -- ever seen what a tornado, thunderstorm, hurricane or nasty landlord can do? I've been fortunate in my 43 years never to have missed a meal or had to sleep in the street -- but it doesn't mean that the possibility doesn't scare me half witless. (some would say that's not very far, for me :-) Duff, for those who haven't had the pleasure of her company (both on list and in person), is the reason that JewelStock happened. She has always had time and encouraging words for others who are in need, and busted her butt making things happen around here for quite a while. She's in school right now, has less time to mess with the list -- but still drove 34 hours to attend Liz's birthday party. On a school weekend. For no particular reason other than to join 30 other EDAs for the fellowship and warmth that makes this list unique. I'm sorry I seem so grumpy this week; I would prefer not to get involved with these mini-flame wars at all. But I won't stand by and let someone as special as Duff get dissed for the capital crime of being ejected from her lodgings. This will be my last post on this subject; I know the kind-hearted and loving EDAs I met at JewelStock and LizStock won't let Duff down. :-) Hey, how was the WebCast? I may be starting a stupid string here, it may not have been tried before so forgive me for trying something new just for fun, here goes: I brought Jewel into my house last year, the POY cd, started playing it, and now my dad is hooked on her. He goes to the store and tells me everytime Jewel is played, he requests her on my stereo, he watches for her on tv..........My dad is EIGHTY years old!!!!!! Are there any older Jewel fans out there that you can think of....I'm not looking for distinction here, this is just for fun....but there is someone out here who thought music died with the Tommy Dorsey band (Big Band era), until Jewel came along!!!!!!!!!! People always talk about how 700 people read everything you post on this list. Some people also say 900, and some say 1000+. I remember just after I first subscribed (about 2 months ago) when Jeff Wasiliko posted that the list had reached 1000 subcribers. That was two months ago, and ALOT of people have joined since then, judging by the number of introductions by newbies being posted. So, I was was wondering if you could tell us all the official number of EDAs, Jeff? Well, I can help, but Jeff probably has the exact number. According to my query to Majordomo, the following lists have the following numbers of subscribers (There's a CATCH thogh): Jewel - 349 subscribers (as of 1:00am EST) Jewel-Digest - 535 subscribers (as of 1:02am EST) Jewel-News - 518 subscribers (as of 1:03am EST) Now, yes, there's also Jewel-announce, but the only true SUBSCRIBERS to that list are Mike & Jeff (2 addresses each, in fact) although we all get whatever they post. Now, THE CATCH is that there are a lot of people subscribed TO MORE THAN ONE LIST. So, we can't just add them all together. Anyways, I just thought this would give a bit of information, although it's not an exact EDA count (plus, in my opinion, you don't have to be a subscriber to be an EDA.... :-) - Terrence R.
