The Nields are truly wonderful people. i also have had the pleasure of talking to them and getting their autographs. i am sure Jennifer has the best intentions, but copying a commercially availble compact disc is wrong. to quote from the liner notes of The Nields' cd "Bob on The Ceiling": "Thank You for supporting independent artists like ourselves. We beseech you not to copy this or any other artist's album for your friends (except if you are making a cool mix of your favorite songs -- that's different); instead why not invest a little moola, get your friend a present, and helps us out? If in the event that you must copy our album, at least don't tell us." i think we should all follow the good advice offered by The Nields i beg EDAs not to tape and distribute commercially available material. it's not fair to the artists or other peopel who make their living in the recording industry. i have posted on this issue at least 3 times in the last six months. i hate to be a pest, but this is a very important issue. we should not be taking money out of the pockets of performers we love most. thanks for listenin! peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org "Innocence Maintained" is a moderated, news only email list providing its subscribers with timely information about Jewel Kilcher. I recorded this week's Hard Rock Live on my MD player and edited it perfectly to have no TV intro announcements or commercials. You can only hear Jewel, the audience and the conversations backstage. I transferred that along with the VH1 duets version of Foolish Games w/ Melissa Ethridge she refers to in the concert onto one side of a 90 min tape. I tried to fit "You Can Sleep While I Drive" too but it didn't fit. This might be a good thing to put on the B side of the second Innerchange Days tape. I can accomodate only about the first dozen people that reply. Sorry, but sometimes it be that way. Does anyone out there have a recording of the New York show from March 3 of this year? My sister went to that show and she'd like a copy of it 'cause she said it was great. I don't have much in the ways of trade. I have the aforementioned and a tape of most of a Baltimore concert from '95 (the tape gets cut off). Can anyone help me out? Lastly, does anyone have extra J-cards for the Innerchange Days tapes or Jewel Stock? Do the J-cards for Innerchange exist at all? Please drop me a line if you can help me or if you want a tape made. I just want to say that I've been listening to Jewel since the summer of '95 and I'm sad to see a secret out of the bag, so to speak, and I was inflamed when I found out that Jewel's new album was delayed b/c of corporate manipulation, but thanks to you guys, I have enough Jewel to listen to (at least for now). -kelby ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Apr 1997 19:57:08 -0500 From: Chris Phillips Subject: TECH HELP I'm using NetScape Navigator 3, Windows 95, & MicroSoft Word. I hope no one has already forwarded it :) This was sent back on February 28th when the show was taped. Enjoy! Paul "a fun game to play is to watch Star Wars and insert variations of the phrase 'I suck' every time Luke has a bit of dialogue, and notice how true it sounds and how much he means it" Kim forward here: WOOOOOO-HOOOOOO!!!!! I got to go see Paula *and* Jewel perform live at the Sony Music Studios last night!!!! As soon as I got confirmation that I was on the list, I made up an excuse at work as to why I had to take a half-day, bolted out the door, went home, got my roommate and we headed for the Sony Music Studios up on 54th and 10th. We managed to get on the V.I.P. list, so we were pretty much guaranteed admittance to the taping and we also got to go grub in the V.I.P. lounge before the show. :) Jewel did her set first. I won't take up a lot of time talking about her, but I will say that she managed to convert me last night. Previously, I've not liked her music very much, but she puts on a great live show. In addition to having a great voice, she also seemed to be a genuinely nice person and she was really cute. So, anyway... we saw Jewel. She did a couple of new songs (I wouldn't have known either way), she yodeled with her dad and she sang "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" with her mom. It was cool. Then, Paula and the guys (Jay, Eric and Mike) came out and performed *NINE* songs... it was just like an abbreviated version of her current concerts, except that there was a lot of very cool lighting and the acoustics at the Sony Studios are better than those at the TLA in Philly (echo, echo). Paula was looking sooooo beautiful last night! She wore that same purple halter/black pants combo, but she wore her hair down (very nice) and it looked like they'd made her up a bit (which I didn't care much for). I've never her seen her with her hair down *ever* and it *was* great (she had really pretty hair), but I still like the braids and fresh-scrubbed face *a lot* better. The set list was: Throwing Stones Mississippi Me Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? Road To Dead Tiger I Am So Ordinary I Don't Want To Wait Hitler's Brothers She did all of the songs just like she's been doing in concert, so there's nothing new to remark on there. The audience was pretty lame, though. It appeared that almost everybody had come specifically to see Jewel. Indeed, a lot of the young, self-important interns and other sundry industry people we had been laughing at while waiting on line got up and left before Paula ever hit the stage. They'll learn soon enough. :) Their absence did nothing to dampen my spirits, though - I was still voicing my approval and applauding after Paula's songs ended. In fact, if they happen to show _Tiger_ (more specifically the moments just before she started _Tiger_ - when she was just sitting back down at the piano), when she waves - SHE'S WAVING TO ME!!! I know that sounds like a pubescent girl saying that Paul McCartney waved to her up in the nosebleed seats, but seriously... Paula really was waving at me. :) It makes sense; she's seen my face so many times now out in the crowd (my big smile) that she's actually able to recognize me. Anyway, it was very cool. You'll probably hear me whooping and hollering as soon as her songs finish, too. I can't help myself. Her music just makes me a happy kinda guy. :) The deal of this whole show is that Hard Rock Live is going to be shown on VH-1 on March 30th at 8:00 p.m. and will be rebroadcast a few times after that. I think the show is also going to be shown on MSNBC at some point, although no one mentioned exactly when. Jewel mentioned at one point that she had gone over her "five song limit", so it sounded to be like they're only going to use five of each of their sets. If that's so, I think that Cowboys, Me amd Ordinary are shoe-ins. Beyond that, I can only hope that Road to Dead and Throwing Stones (or Mississippi - either way) make it in. As I've mentioned before, Paula's live performance of _Road To Dead_ is breath-taking. Also... while I'm bragging I might as well throw this in there, too. :) Can you believe that we were sitting like five feet away from Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam?? I swear, we damned near wet our pants. :) Sorry, I couldn't get close enough to Eddie to ask him about his plans (or lack thereof) of singing with Sarah. He bolted right after Jewel's set and I didn't see him again. :( It's going to be a great show; I'm just sorry you'll all have to wait so long to see it. Peace! Duh. *bonk* :) Yes, a bunch of us strange EDAs covering Jewel songs. Oh, the horror! But amazingly enough, this tape is sweet. We have so much talent gathered here among us, it's scary. But enough of that. In no particular order, here is who is on the tape, and what songs they're doing (since I know you're interested): Liz Clark The ABCD Song Katie McCurry Let Them In WWSYS Carnivore Jessica Absence of Fear Angela DiIulio Flower I've Got the Blues More Than You Do Blues Been Down So Long Morning Song Greg Yanito I'm Sensitive Eric Montas Carnivore Foolish Games Angel Standing By William Cheng YWMFM Damon Schmidt Sometimes It Be That Way Rebecca A. Better than the 25 WWSYSs and 18 YWMFMs that some people thought we might get. But on with the tree. I decided to do this tree a different way than trees have been done in the past. Instead of asking for branches first, I will be asking for leaves first, but I will also ask those leaves if they would like to be branches. The reason I'm doing this is because I'm not quite sure what the demand for this tape will be, so I'd rather find out who wants it, and from that, determine how many branches I'll need to keep myself from going insane. So, to sign up for this tape, cut and paste the little form below and send it to me with the Subject: leaf - EDA Cover Tape, and we should all be kosher. cool? cool. I hope to have branches assigned by next week, and those branches should have their tapes, j-cards and leaf lists by the following week. Well, that is it. I hope everyone enjoys it. Take care. 'Bye! I'm suprised that you can't find the Razor and Tie version of it, Robb. MMmm...well maybe it's just that I'm used to seeing it in stores up in Amherst and Northampton, MA where the Nields currently reside. Oh, difference in the two albums other than the new tracks: the Razor and Tie release's booklet is red covered. The Guardian release's booklet will be blue covered. Moxy Fruvous. Dammit. These guys are great. Their latest album, You Will Go to the Moon, is pretty much a smooshing down of the Beatles' styles into 11 or so songs. This album really shows that they can write good music (their first album, Bargainville showed that they could be topical and quirky; I dont' know about Wood, their second album; the B Album showed that they were damn hilarious). Oh, You Will Go...was released in the US on a new label from the Bottom Line in New York. Well, last week, I saw the Nields open for Moxy in Baltimore at Fletchers (where Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel will be playing). This was a TINY club with about 60 people in attendance, all pretty much die-hard Fruheads. The show started around 10:30 pm. The Nields were their usual rocking fun selves (although since no one new them and they were a little pressed for time, they didn't do a lot of banter. And Dave Nields didn't jump around a lot because there was a support beam hanging low over his head). Nerissa didn't have a cast on her leg, but she did need crutches when she left the venue (she fell off the stage a short while ago and broke some bone in her leg). It seemed like they had to rush through everything. Moxy was great, although they too seemed a little rushed and with the small crowd not entirely into it. But they played well and sang well and had some great fun. No Love Potion Number 9, though :( I'm thinking that their shows in DC and in Philly went much better with bigger crowds and more respectable playing times (moxy didn't finish until 1:30 or so). Neal Copperman was at the show too. Neal is cool. Paul Kim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 00:42:33 -0500 (EST) From: "Terrence R. And for anyone wanting something with more quality, I offer you this: Oh beauty, she is fair. Cheek, lips and hair. She smiles within her sleep As though she saw me weep. Nighty-Night. Am i the ONLY angel around here who thinks Jewel doing a >bush song is a HORRIBLE idea... Well, if you mean Jewel covering a Bush song, then no. I really can't see anyone covering a Bush song. However (like I said) I love hearing duets. I don't care who it is (sept maybe Mary Manson. That seems like it would just turn out bad :]). To tell you the truth, I really don't like the song "6th Avenue Hartache" (sorry if I got that name wrong), but I still look forward to hearing the duet that Jewel did with the Wallfolwers on that song. >songs that make no lyrical sense... Well, I never really thought that Bush songs don't make lyrical sense. Sure, they don't tell a clear story or express a clear emotion like most (if not all) Jewel songs do, but then why should they? It seems more like there songs are using personal metophores (personal to them, I'm sure they get the songs). What is total giberish to one make perfect sense to another. This happens a lot in poetry too. I write poetry useing vailed metophores and most times won't tell people what they mean even if they ask. Songs and poetry are neat in that they can have lines that just airn't totaly clear in meaning unlike books and such where your aim is to tell a story in a way your audience can understand it. Hell, now that I think about it, we've had some talk on here about some Jewel lines that don't make sense (EX: "...and you wake up making love to a wall" from Deep Water). So again I think this just comes down to personal tast. Most people don't care to see a band/singer ther DO doing covers/duets of bands they DON'T like. Of course that could just be me ;] BTW: I was joking about Jewel doing "Machine Head" with the band ;] Just to clear that up. - -Ashe Mayfair: The Longshot Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #235 ***************************
