I actually heard of her a year and a half ago, in which an article about Jewel compared her to Brenda Kahn. I was intrigued, and picked up one of her cd's ("Epiphany in Brooklyn") in a used cd store. This cd took a while to grow on me, but it has turned out to be in the top five of the over 250 cd's that I own. It's style is acoustic, but harsher than Jewel's. Brenda's lyrics are also, by far, the best I have ever heard. She is wonderful. She is the most descriptive storyteller I have ever heard. "Epiphany in Brooklyn" is a classic album, full of wonderful songs. The next purchase was "Destination Anywhere", Brenda's third cd. Here, she turns up her guitars and makes a rock album. Not lost, however, is her amazing lyrical poetry. Within the last week, I've received her first album ("Goldfish Don't Talk Back") and last album ("Outside the Beauty Salon"). GDTB is wonderful... totally acoustic, with lyrics that are angry, ironic, poetic, and a sound that is somewhat bluesy. OTBS is more the style of DA, as in more rockers and less acoustic. However, the lyrics and the mellowness of the music still tells you the background is pure folk. Anyway, in comparing Kahn to Jewel, I'd say Kahn is a more world-weary Jewel. Imagine Jewel if she grew up in the Bronx and had a bad home life and ran away in her early teens. She's more cynical, has better lyrics (described by the All-Music Guide as "turning a nun's hair white" or something like that), but not nearly as nice a voice. Then you get Brenda Kahn. The connection isn't that great (the wonderful Mary Lou Lord is much more similar to Jewel), but Brenda Kahn is still an amazing artist and a vivid lyricist. Recommended first purchase for Jewel fans: Epiphany in Brooklyn (some music stores, http://cdnow.com) Recommended second purchase: Goldfish Don't Talk Back (Intergalactic Garage on the web, look it up, or e-mail me for http://. don't have it right now) or Outside the Beauty Salon (http://cdnow.com, or order at stores) Destination Anywhere should be readily available, and is also great. Ed, I was going to answer this privatly, but then I figured, hey, everyone should read this. I've been on the list since September, which makes me a fresh veteran, or an ancient newbie, or whatever you want to define me as. I have seen many people come, and quite a few go. I've learned, that with only a few exceptions, flamer tend to: A. Learn better, change their ways, be more accepting, and become more angelic. B. Give up on the list and leave, or C. move to lurker status (which absolutly doesn't mean that any given lurker is a flamer). Unfortunatly, as is the case in any group, the ones who are most hot-headed, angriest, and most set-in-their-ways, are also the loudest. You will always meet such people, on and off the list. Their behaviour is human habit, and should be looked at as such. Don't think that just because they make a lot of noise, that they are actually saying something. Don't spend your energy on trying to set them back in the right direction, and don't let them get to you. If you'll ignore them, they will eventually understand that they don't impress you, and they'll let go. Most people, especially on this list, are good and kind people, who care about what's going on around them. They won't always post a reply, because they figure 'hey, it's a good post, he'll probably get tons of replies, I have nothing significant to add, so why add junk to his inbox?', and you won't always hear their voice, but you should know in your heart (and as you stay longer on the list you will learn this is true) that they are there, silent and powerful, the driving force behind this list. What I'm trying to say is, in as open a family such as ours, there are bound to be a few black sheep. Don't let them stop you from enjoying the white wool. On another note, you should take your own advice a little more to heart. If you feel such posts as you have mentioned are un-EDA-like, how does reading some of your own lines make you feel? Be sensitive, and take care, cause others are too. 42, Tuff - TIE - - Save a man's soul, and you will get him out of hell. Save your own soul, and you may help him into heaven. (a bunch of gibberish) Hello again everyone, A few hours ago I wrote a post about being happy. It got sent back because I adressed it wrong, so about 20 min. ago I sent it out again. Well I got offline and went into my journal because I haddn't written anything in it in a while and I wrote a poem about poems it wasn't that great but this first set off my happieness because I have been suffering writers block and have written nothing but fragments of poems that sound like poems I have heard before. Well when I finshed writting it I went to try to spell check it but instead of just doing the poem it tried to do my whole journal. Well I had to stop it because I am not the best speller or typest and rarly ever use spell check. So I just went and read old entries that consists of thoughts and poems and thought fragments and poem fragments and questions. Well when I was reading I saw all my entrys in a whole nother way and I actually liked it and saw some meaning in it. This is the first time that this is happened to my writing so now I have some new feelings in it. I have also relized that I have found out how to put emotions in my writing unlike I have never have before and I relized that being emotional is nothing to be afraid of. I still have no idea why I am writting this post but I guess I feel writting is my only freedom. I thank all who have read this post this long becuse you have just made me happier. *~Chrissy, the girl who has finally relized ten thousand things about herself in ten minutes~* What I wrote. I scribble furiously on the paper like a man running a race but i don't know what I am beating so i quit Then I scream out my words to 900 people but it doesn't help them it doesn't help me and then I sit down and think about what I just did and wish I could turn back time but instead I just scribble again I write about the pain that someone caused and about my hate and i relize that pen and paper is the cheapest shrink so i analyze my life again ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Mar 1997 14:46:18 -0800 From: Farr Subject: Re: ? the poetry book laura catherine taylor wrote: about the poetry book: i was wondering what exactly this book entails. does it have pictures as well as poetry, and is the poetry new or lyrics and old stuff? thanks, luna The poetry book has a total of 12 pictures of Jewel, @ 12 drawings that she did and 20 poems and other misc. stuff. Edwards" Subject: Re: Webcast Jewel Concert Hi, Chances are that the quality will be better with an ISDN connection, but not necessarily as much better as you would expect. It depends on how much propagation we can get, and how many people decide to tune in. The largest Webcast ever was when Mediadome did the New Year's Eve Part. For that we had 8 servers located around the world. As more and more people connect, the maximum frame rate that a server can send out gets diminished. On New Year's Eve, some servers didn't show a difference in frame rate whether you had a T1 or an ISDN connection. At the peak of the Webcast, one server wasn't showing much of a difference between 28.8 and ISDN. Even if the servers get overloaded for Jewel, an ISDN connection would be better than 28.8, since we'll also be updating pages with text and still images. If you've got a good ISDN connection, you should get pretty good audio/video, and get pretty good refreshes with the pages. BTW: At 11pm, we aren't showing the whole Philadelphia show, we are showing hilights interspersed with interview footage, videos, and possibly interviews with people in the audience. -------------CNET: The Computer Network----------------- | Kevin J.
