Of the celestial spheres; heavenly: "Him the almighty power/Hurl'd headlong flaming from th' Ethereal Sky" b. Unearthly; spiritual. 4. Chemistry. Of or pertaining to ether. NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC NJC Forgive me for the length of this tory, but this has been one of the most messed up 24 hours of my life, and I need to tell this to someone. Neccessary background. My brother is a 17 year old, brilliant (I say this not from oppinion but from his IQ, in the 140s), dropout with disreputable contacts and no common sense. He has been known to get drunk and take drugs, but he is not addicted. We know this cause we moved him to Lincoln, a city 50 miles away from my home, Omaha NE, and he can function just fine for weeks at a time with no drugs except cigarettes, which he is addicted to. He moved to Lincoln to work for my grandmother, and things had been going just fine. He comes home to visit on Friday, and we are all happy to see him. Things go great until Saturday evening, when my parents got a call from my brother's friend, saying that he was passed out in his vomit in the bathtub. My parent's rush over. Next thing I know the friend's mom is calling me, saying that my parent's and my brother are at Methodist Hospital. A few minutes later, my mom calls, saying that they are at Methodist and to take the dinner out of the oven. My sister does this, spills it, and gets second degree burns on her right arm. I spend the next 10 minutes cleaning it up, while somehow getting the complicated instructions and numerous phone numbers given to me. I have to 1) Put the turkey back in the refrigerator, since my mother won't be able to prepare it. Simple enough, then, 2)Call my Grandmother at both her work and home numbers, cause their's no way to tell which one she's at, tell her my parent's are at the hospital with my brother, then give HER the 2 numbers which they can be reached at. Then my dad comes home, saying that he want's a book cause he was staying the night at the hospital. He then tells me and my sisters that we are spending the night at my grandmothers house and to pack up. My dad didn't tell me much abour my brother, but I did hear some interesting clips from a phone conversation between him and his friend. "pupils dialated to pinpoints," "unable to rouse him", and "being transfered from the ER to Intensive Care". He my dad calls an employee to cover him on work MONDAY in case he couldn't make it. I'm rather worried at this point. Ok, off to my grandmother's house, where my grandparents were waiting. Being a light traveler, I brought only a book and a CD (guess what CD :-) ). I slip into a chair, turn on the CD, and escape the chaos through my book (Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man, my favorite book, read many times) I drop into sleep with the sweet sounds of Jewel and the conflicting sounds of Aerosmith on Saturday Night Live in my ears. I wake up the next morning, or rather the next afternoon, to find my mother with food from Burger King. The next hour or so is uneventful, so I'll skip to me hearing that my brother is in the driveway. I was happy, and I walked over to see him. It was unbelievable, considering he had been in the hospital only hours before. He looked out of it, but ok. Later, at dinner in my grandparents house, I learned some more details. He was found in the bathtub, my father woke him up, he uttered a gutteral roar, then passed out again, then the ambulance was called. IN restraints, it STILL took 6 men to hold him down! At 2 am, he broke out of his restraints, leapt to the foot of the bed, and fell from the standing position on the bed to his knees on the floor. He broke out of his restraints twice more. Then, when we were home, to top it ALL off, he decides to go BACK out with the same friends that put a half gallon of vodka in his system in the first place! By the way, his blood alchohol level was 3.18, over 3 times the legal level of "Drunk Off Your Ass". God, my brother is brilliant, but he has NO judgement or common sense. My final words to him before this happened were "Don't abandon me!" This was meant as a plea for him to share my misery when I was forced to watch my sisters and their friend at Westroads. I shudder to think how prophetic those words really were, considering how close to death he actually was. Thanks for listening, you EDA's are SO supportive :-) Travis the Philosophizing Angel "If the music guild catches you playing music without a license, they take your instrument and shove... well, let's just say it's not too much fun for the piccolo players..."-Terry Pratchett, "Soul Music" "Inside every living person, is a dead person waiting to get out." This really has been a tough 24 hours huh? Well, I can only say that I'm really sorry for your brother and you and your family. I can say though, that the fact that your brother is a genius and still dropped out of school and does lots of drugs doesn't surprise me at all. From my experience, I know that most very, very intelligent people do the same thing. School bores them, so they see no reason to go or do well in it. They start out doing drugs, especially hallucinogens like LSD because they're "mind expanding." I know that if your brother survives after all this stuff for the next few years, he'll realize what he's doing and stop throwing his life away. Since he's staying w/ your grandma being sober for a while, maybe this'll give him some time to think and since he obviously has a good mind, he'll realize that he's screwing up his life. All the best to you and your family, especially your brother. *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 97 08:50:32 UT From: "Kalipatnam V. Rao" Subject: Rockfest, thank you, misc. ***Please maximize the window to read this clearly...thanks*** First of all, I want to thank Chris Pavek and Derrick for their Rockfest info/updates/corrections. I'm soooo sorry that I posted some incorrect information. I got the info from Ticketmaster about a week before I posted the letter, and they must have changed/added details since then. I also became aware of the Blockbuster/Fruit of the Loom ticket opportunities after I posted the letter. Thanks to Derrick and Farr for all your kindness and hospitality to a new EDA. I have a few questions. I noticed in Chris's info letter that we aren't allowed to bring in any audio/video equipment, and no cameras!!! How have you all recorded (audio) Jewel concerts in the past? How have you taken pictures at some of the larger venues like this one? Please e-mail me on this!!! I read that this stuff was prohibited and almost cried :( . Jewel so rarely comes to Texas, and I won't even have something to remember my first Jewel concert. Also, I bought my ticket thru Ticketmaster for $16. Chris's letter said that this was a general admission ticket, which puts me in the grandstands of the speedway. But the cheaper tickets through Blockbuster/Fruit of the Loom are closer to the stage? I hope not - I want to be around all of the EDA's, not in some stands at the back of the Speedway :( . *Info for Demian Blair* - I don't think the Speedway deals with the selling of tickets, so I'm really sorry, but you might just have to go with ticketmaster (Ticketbastard :) ). Otherwise, refer to Chris Pavek's post from #206 or visit the Blockbuster website at http://www.blockbuster.com for the really detailed stuff. You can also get a ticket with a purchase of $10 or more at Blockbuster (Music) or when you buy a Fruit of the Loom product. Get ready - abrupt end and random topic change--- Everywhere I go, I listen to Jewel. I'm either singing, playing along, or both. Recently, a lot of people have been getting sick of me because I can't stop. They say "Jewel sucks" :( or "All her songs sound the same" or "There's no melody". Has this happened to anyone else? I try to explain that each song is beautiful individually, because they all have a deeper philosophical meaning that is veiled in a melodious song. Each song is wonderful, if only people would try to understand what Jewel is trying to say. I try to convert them to "Jewelism", and play them every song I have, to prove that Jewel is the most diverse, most talented musician around. However, they refuse to listen to me. I think what happened is that Jewel was labeled as a pop singer. This was a disaster. Now, people compare her to the techno-pop stuff that you hear on the radio late at night. Jewel's music is obviously not for dancing at nightclubs, but she has sadly been compared to this. The fact is, Jewel does not fit into any specific category. She is not "pop", and she's not completely folk. Jewel is original, and that's why I started listening to her in the first place. She is one of the few people who can make it work with just a guitar and a voice. But lots of people can't see the tremendous talent that she has. I personally like all genres of music, as long as that music is original. Why don't people get it? Most people that immediately dismiss Jewel because "she whines" really don't know what they're talking about - they've heard one or two songs and have resolved that "she is terrible". It's really annoying. Get ready - another random topic change--- If you like Jewel (which you obviously do), you'll love Dar. Dar Williams is an amazing folk singer/songwriter out of New England. She has a beautiful voice, wonderful acoustic guitar talent, and really deep lyrics. The songs, like Jewel's, all have a deep meaning that you only figure out after you've listened to it about 10 times. She currently has 2 albums out. The first one, called "The Honesty Room", has really cool, entrancing lyrics and great guitar parts. The second, called "Mortal City", explores a wide range of colors and instruments. You can find her albums at most music stores in the folk section. Please check it out - I think you'll enjoy it. You can also go to the Dar Williams website at http://www.panix.com/~tneff/dar/. If any current Dar fans have guitar tabs to any song, please e-mail me - I love to play and sing. Once again, thank you to Derrick, Farr, Laura, and Demian for all of your kindness. It does seem to happen a lot w/ her though, probably because she is one of the more famous musicians. It frusterates the hell out of me, but there's nothing I can do about it. Most of the time when I hear people say this, I just tell them how wrong they are, and of course they don't listen to me, so I use something else. They're two words.... shut up. :) This usually works pretty well. And, if some other time they decide they hear a Jewel song they like, you use four more words... I told you so. :) There's no way you can convince people to like Jewel, just like there's no way for people to convince me to like artists I don't like, so inevitably you have to stop arguing w/ them. *hugs* Emily P.S. I'm sorry I'm posting so much today, but I'm on spring break this week, and extremely bored. People have reported that Jewel is tired at times on this tour (who wouldn't be with such a gruelling schedule) and that as she becomes increasingly popular she has less time to spend with her devoted fans. That's the reality of the touring life of a multi-platinum star. But there's nothing anyone has ever experienced that would lend any credibility to the rumour that Jewel was mean to someone who was talking with her after a show. That's totally out of character. Everyone who has met her, and that numbers in the hundreds of people on this list and countless encounters, are a much better guide to Jewel's positive character. It's too easy to get worked up over things people say without any sort of definition or backup. One can believe in the true life encounters of people who report using their own names. I am under the impression that Jewel is perfect in every way. The fact that Jewel has crooked teeth is merely suggests that Jewel is human (which I am having a hard time accepting). I try not to put Jewel on to high of a pedestal because if she falls she will break beyond repair (note Me with Mariah Carey after nothing came out after the Daydream album). Its just that since Jewel really is perfect to me in every way, it is very hard for her to remain human to me. I mean lets face it, Mentally? She's a genius. Physically? She's Aphrodite. Vocally? She's pure emotion. How can she not be a goddess? Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 01:37:54 -0800 (PST) From: Trent Smith Subject: My take on St. Louis 3/21 (LONG) I just got back to school (and my computer-access) from Spring Break and re-subbed to the list, so I don't know what (if anything) others have had to say about this show, but I want to give a little story-review anyway. I made the roughly 3hr drive to St. Louis with my mom, and this was the first live-Jewel-experience for either of us. I, of course, have heard many tapes of live shows (and have read lots of reviews) , so I pretty much knew what to expect, but I think my mom was taken by surprise at how good the show was (or maybe it's just that she likes to emote more than I do). Our seats were not particularly good, but by no means bad: on the floor-level, near the back of the auditorium-- I was on an aisle so my view was completely unobstructed, which was very nice. The venue was very nice-looking, but the seating arrangements (individual chairs lined up with chalk-mark numberings on the floor) left something to be desired. My only previous experience with the Rugburns had been rumors from this list and the little bit on the "Innerchange Days" tapes, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have a couple of friends whom I could see becoming big Rugburns fans; it's too bad they weren't at the show with me (and they were invited!) If I'd been a local I may have better understood Steve's on-stage banter (including wrestling) with some (apparently) local radio personality, but as it is it went over my head-- this same person proceeded to come out and dance around at the edge of the stage during every up-tempo Rugburns song. Jewel was, for my money, excellent. I was disappointed that her cellist and perc. were MIA (is there a story here?) but she handled herself extremely well solo. I don't have a complete setlist (I assembled an out-of-order one later), but she played 22 songs (counting encores), two of which I didn't know. Highlights (for me) were "1000 Miles Away" (second song of the set), "Boy Needs a Bike" (which she introduced as "a new song," a dubious claim since it's been on "Rare Angels" for almost 2 years), both "Adrian" and "Painters," as well as a lot of the (I would guess) "standards"-- the ones mentioned in every show review I read. She almost played "Race Car Driver" (the opening chords) until someone in the audience (presumably an EDA, or just a VERY knowledgeable lay-fan) yelled out "I thought you hated that one" and she switched over to "MOPGGTW" (Boo!) The crowd seemed about as well-behaved as I would have expected; she had to admonish people not to yell "Yodel" and some guy (are you out there?) tried to get her to read a poem of his which he'd thrown onto the stage, but for the most part it seemed like the audience was cheery at the appropriate times and quiet at the appropriate times. She only did one encore, but that's okay, because I was approaching overload as it was; I might have passed out. After the show, since we were parked right by the theatre, had no place we needed to be (we'd made hotel reservations), and because my mom has at least as obsessive a personality as I do (although in Jewel-matters she projects all of it upon me), we decided to loiter around the buses and try to see her. I had a copy of POY and a freshly-purchased Sharpie ready just-in-case. There were pretty many people around, spread over about a block, mostly trying to look inconspicuous, but after about 20min when Jewel quickly came out and hustled onto her bus without a word or glance (at least that I noticed) most of them (ie- the polite, non-stalking ones) dispersed. There were roughly a dozen of us left hanging around, wondering if that was it or if maybe we could catch a glimpse of her if we waited long enough. A group of college-age girls (presumably a sorority) were having a pizza delivered to their car. Another guy (are you out there by any chance?) had seen her in Chicago the night before. I told everyone that I had tickets to see her again in LA on 4/2, and they seemed envious (as they should!). After a few minutes of this (maybe 10-15?) Steve Poltz came walking by and we stopped him for a round of pictures, autographs, and small-talk (I've got a nice goofily-posed picture with him). He seemed more than happy to visit and sign things, especially for the aforementioned college-girls. As he was about to get on the bus, the guy who'd been in Chicago (who, my mom excepted, was the oldest person present) suggested that he tell Jewel that there were only a very few of us out there and that we wouldn't keep her long (according to SP she was trying to save her voice, which presumably also explains the short encore). Sure enough, she came out (with Steve) a minute or so later and, although you could tell that she was maybe starting to lose her voice, she was very sweet and nice and didn't act at all brusque or put-upon. She chatted very briefly (I mentioned that I'd be seeing her again in LA, my mom told her we'd driven 3hrs to see her), but mostly she just signed things (with my Sharpie). Some youngish-looking girl gave her a kiss (which all agreed was very sweet; however if I'd tried the same thing the reaction would probably have been much different), a couple of people gave her little gifts, she expressed approval of people with Rugburns' shirts. I got a semi-posed picture with her as she was returning my pen. After probably no more than five minutes SP mentioned that she'd better get back inside to protect her voice, and we let her go, satisfied that our malingering paid off. (NOTE: If her voice gave out in KC the next night, I apologize). While heading back to our car, we walked by the Rugburns' bus, and noticed Stinky and John Castro giving hugs and kisses to everyone in sight. As we were driving away a few minutes later, a couple of blocks from the theatre we saw two pedestrians on the sidewalk and noticed that one of them was Steve Poltz. We rolled down the window and yelled to him as we drove by, and he waved back but quickly ducked around the corner, being hotly pursued by John, Stinky, and several of the girls we'd seen outside their bus a few minutes earlier-- as we drove away my mom and I agreed that the Rugburns definitely seem to be relishing their celebrity, and that Steve Poltz seems like a really great guy. And that, folks, is the end of my story. I apologize for the length and rambly detail, but as a first-time concert-goer (not to mention my first close-up contact) I think I deserve a little leeway. If I post again after the LA concert, I promise it will be shorter, more concise, and might even include a full and accurate set-list (at least for the not-brand-new songs). HOW ABOUT JEWEL DOING MTV UNPLUGGED!!!!! This is NOT a rumor I heard or something I read.....I am a fan of Jewel and love when a group or artist that I like does an MTV Unplugged.....this would be great because it would be another Jewel performance and we would be able have it on tape......everytime an MTV Unplugged comes out, I go and buy a tape to record them whoever the artist.....I mean it is not just a video that doesn't show the true beauty of musicians......where MTV Unplugged is as it's name says.....unplugged......it is just the artist playing and that is what I love to watch!!!!! Hopefully, in the near future, this will happen and definelty would be an awesome performance!!! So if you read THE ODYSSEY, you know Stinky and the Rugburns and Jewel have a tape of my band. I just realized a song that was on that tape... left over from an early concert in a basement on New Years Eve... Just that fact is shocking enough, but I remembered a song we played that is on the tape: WWSYS. So now Jewel has heard me sing her song. Badly. Actually, it's not all that bad, for my band. But its still WWSYS. And it sounds terrible. I thought I was worried about what the Rugburns would think about my band playing Lockjaw. Well, they were probably honored compared to what Jewel will think. What am I going to do? I am freaking out here. I think I have defaced the name of the Everyday Angels. Oh my goodness. I honestly did not mean for this to happen. I am very embarrassed by this. If only Steve Poltz had told me earlier, "You're too young to drink alcohol!" - -tim "never been embarrassed in my life until now" 'burkeman' ps I apologize. Then again I was high on coffee , and was in a boring biology class. My point is sometimes things come out the way didn't want trhem to. Maybe Jewel thought she'd say this in a comical tone , but didn't come out right ... maybe Jewel was extremely tired and not being fully conscious and perceptive spoke out of pure unexpected whim. I've done that a couple of times with people who came to talk to me after a show , and I sometimes responded in a smart-ass kinda way , not thinking about the person's feeling , just saying whatever came out in pure frustrated extenuation. I went to a used CD store this weekend and was just browsing through all the cd's and came across a 1st quarter release w/ jewel's song WWSYS and it had Jewel's name misspelled and the front looks like the cover of those Whitman chocolates boxes it;s called Atlantic sampler. Well I bought just because I thought it was cool. My question is how rare is this? I was just wondering because I haven't really heard it mentioned along w/ her other promo's, soundtracks, etc. Thanks! That's weird, because WWSYS was just on Pop-Up Video. I'd never seen it on there before. Anyway, I don't think it said anything about Chris. In fact, it just said it was some guy with his girlfriend.
