That and witnessing Farr's ability to beat a Kansas City Transit Buss through an intersection by about 2 feet... *whew* All in all a great time. Hope we didn't miss saying goodbye to anyone... She makes mistakes, she has bad days, but she also has wonderful days. Sometimes, not often, I have to remind myself of this fact. Not everyone likes her, even if we don't understand why. People have their own opinions and I guess that we have to agree to disagree. Personally, I feel sorry for those who don't see the beauty in Jewel's music. From what I have seen, Jewel is a very nice and warm PERSON. I respect her as a musician, but I also respect her as a person. I have had the wonderful opportunity to ACTUALLY have a conversation with Jewel on three occassions. Each time she seemed very appreciative and kind. I realize that she could have been putting on a total facade, but after seeing her in concert 7 times, I don't think so. Ok, I'll shut up now. There is a very Berkeleyish cafe on the corner of Milvia and University called the Au Coqulet Cafe. (2000 University Ave.) It's a three block walk from BART and a four block walk to the show. I'm going to show up as early as I can and hang out until the show; probably between 6-8 pm. Lemme know if this is kosher with everyone. (Sorry Eric, there aren't any Starbucks in the area.) Directions from BART: Exit at the Berkeley Bart station. Head north on Shattuck to University, turn right (west) and walk to Milvia. there you are! Directions from Davis: Take 880 and exit on University. Drive up University and find parking in the area after Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The theater is to the right of University ave. You can also goto Yahoo and look up City Maps to get a map of the area. I've heard all good stories about Jewel, too. But it's funny, because you act like it's easy to meet Jewel. I wish I could, but I know it's not easy to get close to celebrities. I once went to a Bulls exhibition game and had courtside seats, and Jordan, Rodman, Pippen, and Kukoc were all right in front of me. I mean RIGHT in front of me. I tried to just get them to look at me for a second to take a picture, but they didn't even acknowledge that I was even there. At least Steve Kerr (he da mack) was all cool to me. I've got about 50-60 people on the list, and that's enough. I'll review everything real quick. I've got an extra copy of Save The Linoleum for sale. I bought it for $35 but I'm just asking $40 for it to cover shipping. I just want an EDA to have it. NEW STUFF: I'll let everyone know sometime tomorrow how I'm going about choosing the person. If anyone wants to back out for any reason, please let me know. Whatever I decide, I want to be able to tell the lucky person by Wednesday. Some people have requested an auction, and as much as I would love the money, I'm not sure if I want to do that. As Superinformed Angel said, some people on the list might not like it. But I haven't ruled that out yet. Other ideas are Jewel trivia, number from 1-100, and I've had some other things I'm considering. One of them is one list member offered me a copy of Shiva Diva Doo Wop, which I've been looking for for quite a while. I'll think about it, and tell everyone tomorrow. One more thing that I'll take requests on, is people have told me that I should make copies for anyone who wants them. Or another idea is to make the person who buys it from me make copies for everyone. As long as people send me tapes and an SASE envelope, I can tape it for some people and the other person can tape for others. I already have my own STL CD, so this wouldn't be a problem except for college might slow down my efforts. When I got my copy a while ago, I ordered it from Southland CD for $25. This time it was $35. We've worked hard at getting everyone free for the gig, and made sure our remodeling will be done so everyone can relax in a clean, clutter-free house. I apologize for the inability to secure a date which would allow all EDAs to attend, but it was hard enough getting all six of us to be available on the same weekend that most polled were able to show up. :-) Local Indianapolis band Chuck Marten, consisting of my daughter Toni and three of her friends, will play an unprecedented two-and-a-half shows on Saturday, May 3rd, 1997. There will be a full band set at our place, plus a bonus acoustic gig by two of the band members. Later that evening, the band will play at local hangout the Emerson Theater, an all-ages venue. The Emerson gig, unfortunately, will have an admission fee of about $5. All are welcome to car-pool with us to the gig, or stay home and continue the party in our absence (my wife will probably stay home and work on her Calculus homework; it's what she does 7 days a week anyway :-) All EDAs are invited; there should be plenty of floor space for everyone (except Liz Clark-Poltz and sister Shelly, who have earned comfy beds) and enough parking space for their cars. The party will commence in the early evening hours of May 2 and continue through May 4 or until everyone gets sick of Greenfield, IN and bails out. We ask only that if you're coming early you should check with us to make sure someone is home to let you into the house. :-) Confirming in advance is a good idea anyway, so we can plan to have spare blankets, food, and stress pills for the cats. Oh yeah -- if you're allergic to cat fur, beware that we have 5 furballs roaming the house at all hours of the day or night. Due to allergies of our own, this is a non-smoking house, but the weather should be warm enough for the porch or garage (as was managed very politely at LizStock). OK; it's a firm date. Again, sorry we couldn't match everyone's schedules; but the informal poll showed a heavy peak of EDA availability for this week, and maximizing attendance was important. We might do this again in Summer to catch the remainder of the EDAs, if everything clicks. We now return you to your regularly scheduled maiing list. - -- | Greg Dunn | this is slowly taking me apart. | | GregDunn@aol.com | grey would be the color if i | | gregdunn@indy.net | had a heart. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 23:21:35 -0600 From: jnye@probe.net (john nye) Subject: jewel on tv.net Hey EDAs At www.cnet.com if you go to tv.com and on tv.com to jewel webcast you can see the Wwsys and ywmfm video on the 'net. Subject: tim's long review of his latest concert escapades Ok, I just got back after my little jewel jaunt. I'm a happy, but tired camper. Chicago: the fun started when, while walking to Ed's, I realized I had left my tickets back in my dorm room. Lucky me. Many thanx to all of the EDAs who helped me get in by bribing the head usher lady. :) The show was really good (it was my first), but it was soon dwarfed by later shows. I am depressed to hear that Jewel did show up after the show, because we must have just missed her; we waited for a while, and thought she was already spirited away in the white bronco or whatever. :( Saw the Rugburns, though, and that was cool. Hands manifest thought: 9:55 St. Louis: After taking a nice three hour detour to stop back home and get my tix for this show, I got at the theatre too late for my meeting with Todd, but we straightened that out. I met some people , and then went across the street for a satisfying dinner at Jimmie's Greasepit. I saw John and Stinky beforehand (before all 800 14-year old girls knew who they were) and they remembered me from Chi, and we talked for a little bit. Todd and I cornered Steve right before the show, and got him to sign our CDs. I also asked him about the lack of cello, and he confirmed that the cellist had prior engagements with Lyle Lovett. The Rugburns set kicked some serious arse, easily the best of the three. (if anyone taped it, I'd like it) Todd and I got a goofy picture with John and Stinky during the intermssion. Jewel's set was even better than the night before. But, as Bob said, the seating sucked. Todd and I were those people looking at Jewel in a 3' pit from behind four rows of people. And, the crowd kept getting up and fetching mass quantities. No 'burns or Jewel appearances afterwards, though. Hands Manifest Thought: 10:45 Rev. Jim and I stayed up too late at his house, and then made out way in the morning to: KC: Got to the hotel fine. As was aformentioned, the suite was cool, we had dinner, and Duff prodded us out the door to leave for the show. The hotel was serving complimentary drinks, and Jim was twofisting gynnantonix, and this added to lack of sleep compelled me to drive instead. We stopped for gas after assuring Capello we knew where we were going. I went to the correct address on 7th street, only to find a liquor store. We asked the propreitor where Memorial Hall was, and he informed us it was in KC, Kansas, not KC, Missouri. The man outside thought we were idiots. So, we traveled to the correct state, and still couldn't find the place. We asked a grocery cart lady by the Piggly Wiggly where Memorial Theater was, and she said she'd never heard of the place. When asked where Memorial Hall was, she knew instantly and gave explicit directions. The place looked much more like a federal building or Mason's hall than a theater. But anyway. Like Farr said, I ended up on the balcony, but it wasn't bad. The Rugburns set wasn't as crazy as the St. Louis set, but it was much more inspiring, with the addition of Your Ghost. Jewel's set was amazing, and the sound wasn't bad. She was giggly, told many stories, responed to the crowd, etc. I think it was this giddiness that made her flub a couple lines in Fragile Flame and Chime bells, but she's more than excused. And excellent show. Hands Manifest Thought: None! I think she cut it because she told sooo many other stories, so she amputated that section of her story. After a rather long drive home (not as long as Duff's; she's a loon), here's my: Overview: As Jewel said at KC, "it's like an Alanis Morrisette song, 'isn't it ironic?'". I had the best seats in the best theater, in chicago, but the best show, IMO, of the three was in KC, where I had the worst seats. I saw the 'Burns numerous times; they kept remarking, "you're here again?" Sadly, I missed Jewel, but I thought that everyone did. Now that I heard she did come out in Chi, I'm even more sad. For me, that is, I'm glad to hear some people got to see her. I'm glad to have met a bunch of EDAs, they're the most neato-keen people around. Lots of driving, lots of Jewel, and lots of fun. I'm tired now, so I'll add more at a later date. tim gavin ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #212 ***************************
