Allan Staff Writer for The Indianapolis Star "A Diamond In The Rough" Jewel's so many women - lover, fighter, frightened, schoolgirl poet, business person. All of them (but mostly the schoolgirl poet) came out Friday night at the Murat Theatre during her 90-minute performance. Self-assured beyond her years, Jewel, 22, obviously has captured the imagination of teen-age girls, who comprised a sizeable portion of the 2500 screaming fans. Their adulation appears to be warranted, though perhaps for sometime down the road. Jewel's voice is an enticing and wonderful instrument that she uses to growl and coo. And she's charming - even a pitch asking the audience to call radio stations to request her next single, "Foolish Games", sounded sweet. But her guitar work is rudimentary and often sounds like she's playing variations of either Neil Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done" or Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust". And her lyrics - an essential part of the equation, since she sings with minimal accompaniment - need work. At her best, Jewel is waiting for her Marlon Brando to come crashing through the gates. Or she's apologetic: "I'm sorry Jesus died for my sins/and I swear to God it won't happen again." Mostly, though, just when you think you might be watching the next Joni Mitchell, Jewel breaks just like a little girl. "I could face the world fearlessly/if you would face it here with me," she sang. And, "When you look in my eyes/please note my heart is in your hands." Yet her innocence also serves as a charm. She played maybe six songs (actually 11) songs from her debut disc, PIECES OF YOU, including "Morning Song" and "You Were Meant For Me". The remaining tunes were unrecorded or unreleased, and she introduced them by saying things like, "I don't know how good it is, but it's new" and "I've never sung this song in front of people." An out-of tune guitar made her cry "ouch!" But the summation of the show came when she sang the line "My heart is filled with growing pains." So's her show. Of the few songs in the setlist that were different from the Indy show, I really liked "My Own Private God's Gift To Women" and "Painters". And "Adrian" was awesome...the place was so quiet. She had everyone standing on the floor level for WWSYS, which I don't think happened in Indy (but I might be wrong...I was in the balcony for that show and didn't really pay attention to the floor...we stayed seated in the balcony). Though I didn't think she was into the show as much as Indy, she was just as lovely. >A bit about the theater. This theatre was a dump compared to the Murat Theatre in Indy. The sound system wasn't nearly as good and the seating not anywhere as comfortable. However, I had a much closer seat and view (thank you Julianne and friends), so none of that mattered. There really wasn't a bad seat on the floor level...it was so small compared to the Murat. I don't know about the balcony levels. The second balcony level looked so high up. The weather? What a contrast. Indianapolis was about 30 with light snow flurries, St. Louis was 70 and sunny. Met Stinky of the Rugburns after the show, bought some merchandise, and then met a few of the EDA's, some of whom were off to the K.C. show. Me?...I went down to the Lacledes Landings for some post-show partying. Driving home the next day was a blurr. What do ya think. -Hairball. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 19:30:47 -0500 From: Miguel Antonio Gonzalez Subject: Jewel on TV.COM For those keeping track, TV.COM, a syndicated show affiliated with CNET.COM which is producing Jewel's www.mediadome.com appearance had a short promotional bumper on their show this weekend. I just found out that Patty will be playing in Boston on May 9 as the headliner (not an opening act). The show is at the Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley, MA (which is about 40 miles west of Boston on Rt 2A). The venue's quite neat (it's over 200 years old and a historic building). I'll be there, and I hope to see some other Boston folks there...Let me know if you want ticket info. Bec :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 19:08:20 -0800 From: Farr Shepherd Subject: Kansas City SetList The whole Kansas City experience was outstanding. First of all Capello got us a great suite at the Embassy and everyone was able to make it on time. After we found out that the Cheesecake Factory didn't have any PITAS we decided to order some pizza before the show. We got there in plenty of time to check out the venue and find our seats. Duff briefly talked to John before the show but there was more time for that later. Sad to say that they sold out of her poetry books and won't have any until Seattle, sorry for those of you going to the show in Denver. The show got off to a good start. The RugBurns went over very well with audience. All the guys were constantly cracking everyone up as usual. The venue held about 3300 and did end up selling out. All of the EDA's had floor seats except Tim, I'm sorry TIM :( I think the Burns set lasted about 30 or 35 minutes, I'm sure Bob will have the details on that in his review. They didn't have a chance to roam the crowd much between the set because Duff, Tim, Rev, and I had them cornered at the entrance. We had previously made out detailed maps to our suite at the Embassy and gave them to the Stinky and tried to lure them with some Rolling Rock but they showed up after we had all fallen asleep and we missed them ;> After I saw Steve escorting Jewel to the front we all began to find our seats. Lights Out.... as expected she opened with an excellent version of Near You Always. 1.NYA 2.Morning Song 3.Don't 4.Little Sister 5.Cold Song 6.Sometimes It Be That Way 7.Foolish Games 8.YWMFM 9.Adrian (Duffs Fav) 10.Cleveland 11.Deep Water 12.Passing Time (I think was the name, from the chourus) 13.Fragile Flame or Fatboy, you choose 14.Race Car Driver 15.Nicotine Love 16.Silver Lining 17.POY (by request :/ ) 18.Angel Standing By 19.Chime Bells And That was It UHH No ENCORE 20.WWSYS 21.AMEN And the BIG SHOCKER.................. NO "Hands Manifest Thought" Can You Believe It!!!!!! Comments: I thought the crowd was pretty good compared to what I heard of the St. Louis crowds and some others on the tour. I was satisfied with the sound qulaity. Stinky was easily heard and John's Bass was powerful when it needed to be. The version of Adrian she did was longer than normal which elated Duff. She almost had to leave because it touched her so much. There was a LOT of chemistry between Jewel and John and there were at list 2 kisses, check and a debateable lips peck. Steve's yodeling wasn't bad either. As far as the crowd goes, there was only one distinguishing comment during POY and they were mostly well behaved and got quite when asked. Several requests for "Emily" were made but it was to no avail. The venue was cleared out relativly qucikly I'd say and the Burns were out signing until everyone was gone almost. After the show we all made it back to the Hotel in one piece (with no help from a BUS). The crew from St. Louis crashed quickly due to massive sleep deprivation and complementary beverages at the bar :} The subject of PITAS finally "PITAED OUT" after countless hours and the Circut City Tech Line was no help in our quest for Toronto. All and all I had a wonderful time and enjoyed Jewel the RugBurns and all of the Angels that made it a great weekend. (in a bitch like tone). *I* think someone's either feeding you a line or he provoked Jewel by smarting off at her first. I've met her 4 times and was increasingly impressed with how sweet and kind she was; anyone who would miss a plane flight (like she did at JewelStock) to stay with her fans longer earns extra brownie points in my book. Rugburns - -------- "Baby Won't You Take Me Home" "I Thought I Saw You Last Night" (They did it "solo" two nights in a row now - reviewing setlists, I noticed it was part of Jewel's set in Toronto) "Crazy Crazy World" (Jack Nicholson/OJ/Jenny Jones) Good Morning I Miss Waking Up With You Gold's Gym Guy KC Improv - "Pissed about the Jayhawks" Your Ghost (see below) Rub Somebody Hitchhiker Joe I'm Gonna UPS My Heart Next Day to You ("Louder bastards!!!" - Steve P) A short (38 minute) but diverse set that only included one song off of TtWBD (and an unlisted one at that...). They came out more frantic than StL or Indy but had swung completely around by the time Your Ghost rolled around. It seems John Lentz (who YG was written for and TtWBD is dedicated to) was from KC and his (John's) parents were in attendance last night. Just Steve on guitar. Wow. Audience actually seemed to be listening to the lyrics, too (generalization, but the slower the song, typically, the less audience attention/more chatter - not in this case). Anyone attempting to discredit Steve's songwriting ability (as either monotonous or humorous fluff) probably hasn't listened to YG and certainly hasn't seen it. Stinky lobbed 4 drumsticks into the crowd on his way offstage. Jewel - ----- Near You Always Morning Song Don't Little Sister Cold Song Sometimes It Be That Way Foolish Games YWMFM Adrian "You're In Cleveland Today" Deep Water "Just Passing Time" Fragile Flame(Fat Boy) Race Car Driver Nicotene Love (with an appropriately placed cough by the person next to me who'd already sucked down half a dozen cigarettes...) Silver Lining Pieces of You (giving 1% of the audience the perfect opportunity to make fools of themselves) Angel Standing By (uh oh. When this one rolls around its almost over...) Chime Bells WWSYS Amen A little over 92 minutes, a little over 92 degrees (not kidding), visibility through layer of smoke - roughly 92 feet. Coincidence? I think not. Hands Manifest Thought: NONE! (Duff wins!) Quite possibly the best of the three I saw, though John Hagen's absence once again might give the edge to Indy (that and I think "Cleveland", while okay, is probably my least favorite of the four new ones she hauled out there). And if you thought The Murat (Indy) made The American (StL) look like a dump... Memorial Hall (KC)? Imagine a large 50's high school gymnasium/auditorium with flat wood floor and awkward balconies seemingly added as an afterthought, complete with large poles creating dozens of partially obstructed views. The balconies also circled from wall to wall so there were some poor souls who basically had what amounted to an elevated, distant, off-stage profile view of the stage. For floor seats, you were (on average) better off in KC, for balcony (again on average), better off in St. Louis. If The American just wouldn't bother with those platforms - (uh oh. another rant coming on... can't... stop... arghhh....) there's a reason the stage is elevated and stepping (without slope) sections of the audience to the same height (or higher) than the stage defeats the purpose of having an elevated stage. For the back rows of the third tier in StL it would have been equivalent to trying to see someone perform in a ~3 foot PIT while you are at the same level as the 4 rows in front of you. ANYWAY, from what I could tell, everyone on the floor in KC was being told that there was to be no movement in or out during Jewel's set (perhaps because of the spectacle in StL the previous night) and while it helped TREMENDOUSLY, there were those who ignored the request/demand and by keeping the bar open the entire time, it was clear they didn't want to lose any revenue at the expense of the "rule". I'll leave it at that. There should be a good dozen other accounts of it to read. ;) bob - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Today's moral - allen wrenches are too handy to not have a selection of sizes on one's person at all times. ;) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #211 ***************************
