I have a small favor to ask of all you east coast EDA's. My friend Mike Tolcher(anyone on the list 4 or 5 months ago remembers me praising him) is getting ready to graduate from Ga Tech, and is going to hit the road in June to try to perform everywhere he can and possibly{fingers crossed} land a record deal somewhere on the road! What I need from EDA's is a list of clubs that are friendly to out of town acts, acoustic acts, etc. This could be for tips or for paid nights(he has demos to send out). I have no ideas outside of the Fredericksburg area, so if any of you have favorite coffee shops, bars, venues, etc., Mike would appreciate very much if you could e-mail it to me! Thanks alot, y'all. Here's a little note Paul that might explain the higher prices. I was reading this in some magazine like Rolling Stone. They said that the price on a T-shirt at a concert is more expensive because of all the people that get money from it. These are approximate as I can't be sure exaclty what was said. T-Shirt $2.50 Image $2.00 Venue $5.00 Artist $8.00 Record Label $5.00 Total $22.50 Like I said these are just estimates of what I think the article said but it's pretty close, and as you can imagine some of the proces may vary from venue to venue or label to label so these proces aren't set in stone. In fact, I hope she becomes so famous that she is no longer REAL in any sense we are accustomed to. I hope she becomes so famous that she IS fame, no longer human. Then she will never actually play music, we will just hear about it, read reviews, and see pictures, but it won't actually HAPPEN. I hope she becomes so famous that the only way anyone will ever be able to see her is through a camera lens, as her physical self, through some electro-chemical quirk, will never be seen by the naked eye again. I hope she becomes so famous that she mutates into an idea, a thought, a glossy composite of everyone's wishes and insecurites, a standard we compare ourselves to, but can never meet. I hope she becomes so famous that nervous adolescents deify her and spend all day locked in rooms singing her lyrics incorrectly to themselves hoping they might be gospel. I hope she becomes so famous that she is categorized as "Alternative", then "Pop_Rock", then "Alternative" again. I hope she becomes so famous that the Federal Government declares a yearly "Jewel Day", on which only she doesn't have to go to work. I hope she becomes so famous, so bright, so painfully luminescent that we lose her delicate features in the light of the sun. My brother in-law is a traveling DJ (he does weddings and school dances and the like) and I sometimes work for him. Well anyways I have access to his equipment so I could make lots of good quality copies for the other EDA's that need them. Please e-mail me about this. Richard Bachman was a pen name King used for a while to publish severa l books (Rage, The Long Walk, Roadwork, The Running Man, Thinner, and The Regulators). He regarded this pen name as a seperate entity, and when he was exposed in 1985, said that Bachman had died of a brain tumor. He explained The Regulators '97 release by saying Bachman's wife found a finshed manuscript and sent it in to his publisher. King said that Bachman was his twisted, rainy day self. God, an even more twisted version of Steven King, (shudder). He published the first four books in a collection called The Bachman Books. The Long Waklk was incredible, and Running Man FAR better than the already good movie. I highly recomend the Bachman Books. THE BRIDGE There was once a bridge which spanned a large river. During most of the day the bridge sat with its length running up and down the river paralleled with the banks, allowing ships to pass thru freely on both sides of the bridge. But at certain times each day, a train would come along and the bridge would be turned sideways across the river, allowing a train to cross it. A switchman sat in a small shack on one side of the river where he operated the controls to turn the bridge and lock it into place as the train crossed. One evening as the switchman was waiting for the last train of the day to come, he looked off into the distance thru the dimming twilight and caught sight of the trainlights. He stepped to the control and waited until the train was within a prescribed distance when he was to turn the bridge. He turned the bridge into position, but, to his horror, he found the locking control did not work. If the bridge was not securely in position it would wobble back and forth at the ends when the train came onto it, causing the train to jump the track and go crashing into the river. This would be a passenger train with many people aboard. He left the bridge turned across the river, and hurried across the bridge to the other side of the river where there was a lever switch he could hold to operate the lock manually. He would have to hold the lever back firmly as the train crossed. He could hear the rumble of the train now, and he took hold of the lever and leaned backward to apply his weight to it, locking the bridge. He kept applying the pressure to keep the mechanism locked. Many lives depended on this man's strength. Then, coming across the bridge from the direction of his control shack, he heard a sound that made his blood run cold. "Daddy, where are you?" His four-year-old son was crossing the bridge to look for him. His first impulse was to cry out to the child, "Run! Run!" But the train was too close; the tiny legs would never make it across the bridge in time. The man almost left his lever to run and snatch up his son and carry him to safety. But he realized that he could not get back to the lever. Either the people on the train or his little son must die. He took a moment to make his decision. The train sped safely and swiftly on its way, and no one aboard was even aware of the tiny broken body thrown mercilessly into the river by the onrushing train. Nor were they aware of the pitiful figure of the sobbing man, still clinging tightly to the locking lever long after the train had passed. They did not see him walking home more slowly than he had ever walked: to tell his wife how their son had brutally died. Now if you comprehend the emotions which went this man's heart, you can begin to understand the feelings of our Father in Heaven when He sacrificed His Son to bridge the gap between us and eternal life. Can there be any wonder that He caused the earth to tremble and the skies to darken when His Son died? How does He feel when we speed along thru life without giving a thought to what was done for us thru Jesus Christ? When was the last time you thanked Him for the sacrifice of His Son? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 21:28:24 -0500 (EST) From: Burkeman Subject: Re: Jewelstock Request On Wed, 19 Mar 1997, XX SpArKs XX wrote: > Hey EDAs, > > Is there anyone out there that could make a copy of the Jewelstock video > for me? I realize that being on an email list is difficult to keep up with in the beginning; but its things like this that make it important for us to read anything or everything relevant. Also, a lot of the questions similar to these were answered by my adoptive parent in Rachel's Adopt-A-Newbie program. So lovely to speak to you again. I am in despirate need of your help, and I mean DESPIRATE. You may recall that I was recently looking for some concert tickets to the Jewel show in Mpls (which I missed :'-( ) . Well, when I discovered that we (my friends and I ) wouldn't be able to make it, me and my friend panicked and bought 6 tickets to another concert--Presidents of the USA, March 28 in Mpls. Then, suddenly, we discovered that hardly any of us will be able to make it, so the 2 of us, both extremely broke kids, are left with $113.25 worth of concert tickets. Any buyers? I have 6 tix, great seats, for 18.88 each. I would love you forever if you bought them. Thank you so much. So very, very much. Each of us has our own, very personal way to cry. I usually cry in one of two ways: I'll either sob loudly for about 20-30 minutes while lying in bed, usually because of some great personal pain; or I'll sit quietly and bite my lip, but not actually shed any tears. Well tonight I re-discovered a method of crying that I hadn't experienced in some time. It was very much like my "quiet" crying, except instead of crying because of sadness, I felt a very touching joyfulness; and a tear in my eye. I felt the same way at LizStock, just over a month ago, except I didn't cry then -- only because of shock. But this time I did cry, because of something I read on this list. Perhaps you read it as well? It a message titled, "A nice story". If you didn't read it, go back and do so right now. If it's not in your mailbox, I'll forward a copy of it to you. Two things struck me about this story, other than it's obvious message. The first was the timing of it. I have been concerned the past few days with a certain topic and been meaning to write to this list about it (and I'll get to it in a moment). This story, however, has done a lot to make me feel better about my concerns. The second thing that struck me was the sender of this story, JohnnyPlus. When I first saw Johnny write to the list a few months ago, he wrote a lot of things that made me feel he had a bit to learn about e-mail, and especially e-mail lists. Things such as one-line responses, excessive quoting, etc. He also made some comments that upset a few other list members. I didn't have much to say at the time, but privately I supported Johhny and felt he was as much an "angel" as the rest of us. At the time, though, I wasn't quite sure why I felt this way. I'm still not sure, but this story makes me feel a lot better about it. Thank you, JohnnyPlus; I'm glad you're a member of the list. Now, for the real reason I'm writing. A few months ago, when the movie "Jerry MacGuire" was released, it caused some discussions on the list. Particularly, the resemblance of Renee Zellweger to Jewel Kilcher. I didn't intend to see a movie for such an inconsequential thing. But then I began reading reviews of the movie that pointed out not only physical similarities to Jewel, but philosophical ones as well. I was a bit surprised and amazed that Hollywood would produce something like that. So I finally went out to the theatre -- the first time in a year and a half -- and saw the movie. It was a wonderful movie. Touching and funny and spiritual and a reminder of why I still have hope in a world that gives me so many excuses to be cynical. And yes, Renee is *very* much like Jewel. So at first, I was pleasantly surprised to see this movie attracting a lot of attention. I've heard references to it in the office, on the radio, even my own father (who never goes to movies because he spends all his time nit-picking the cameraman) was heard to make a quote from the movie. "At first..." I say. Until I realised that what I was hearing was only one line from the movie, and which line it was. To which I refer to the line, "Show me the money!" This has been used by Oliver North in reference to Pres. Clinton's alleged fund-raising misuse. On a radio call-in contest as a "key phrase" to win $101. And other places merely as a joke. The problem is, this is the one line that least reflects the point of the movie. The line itself is only indirectly related to the plot. There are so many other parts of the movie that mean so much more. The scene in the hospital at the beginning, the scene in the hotel room where he loses his big client, whenever he's talking to his only other client (whose name I can't remember and wish I could). That character is an essential part of the movie because of the balance his level-headed wisdom provides to MacGuire's heady recklessness. Without him there never would've been the happy ending that there was. Yet he is known for the one line that meant absolutely nothing to the plot. But the scene that I most remember, and that the entire movie hinged upon was in the elevator. The line I would like to hear echoed on the television and radio and on the street is, "You complete me." If this were the line everyone knew from the movie, I'd be much happier than I am with, "Show me the money!" It's sad to say that somehow this movie didn't get its message across. Whether it was a lack of the movie to make itself heard, or the lack of people to listen I'm not sure. Certainly I understood it; and from the reviews I read here many of you understood it. But we already knew everything it had to say. It was the people who would most benefit from this movie who failed to understand. At least, that's what it appears like to me -- I hope to be proven wrong. ... and for the movie to be out there, that's good enough for me. - - - -- Blessed Be - ---pat "You couldn't even prove the White House staff sane beyond a reasonable doubt." -- Ed Meese, on the Hinckley verdict ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 22:35:12 -0600 From: jnye@probe.net (john nye) Subject: jewels teeth Hey has anyone heard anyone say that jewel is ugly becuase she has crooked teeth? My friend said her little brother thought jewel was ugly because she did not have strait teeth. I think that is very sad that someone would think like that(I know all of you would not). I know it sounds corney but true beuty(I cant remember how to spell it weird) is on the inside but It is true that if you love a person for them and they are so called "ugly" that they will become beutiful to you. Anyways jewel is beutiful in the physical way as well as on the inside. Okay I have to ask you all a question. Where do you do you best thinking, for poem stories or anything?
