I just want to make sure you know that Jewel's is VH1's Artist of the Month for March. { snip } We have some interview clips that are shown throughout the day, AND.... we'll premiere her recent performance for the new series on VH1 called Live at The Hard Rock Cafe on Sunday March 30 at 8:00 PM and 1:00 AM. She taped this concert in NYC last weekend [late February], and I was lucky enough to be there. She was incredible, in rare form. Funny, sweet, sexy, and breautiful.. I've seen her before and she just blows me away. The audience loved her (and treated her with respect, unlike at the Beacon, so I've heard). So I highly recommned this special to all Jewel fans, and I think that anyone who hasn't been turned onto her yet will soon see why her music is so special. Enjoy guys. That's what got me interested in her. The day she beat No Doubt at the American Music Awards, my respect for her grew. I remember one time I was listening to the radio and the D.J. and a caller were complaining that No Doubt didn't win. They started bagging on Jewel. Well, not really bagging, but they weren't showing any respect to her. I know that if someone beats one of my favorites, they'll certainly earn my respect. Anyways, the caller was like, "Jewel?!? I don't even know who she is!! No Doubt got robbed!!" Well, I'm just sayin' that if it wasn't for her word getting around, it would have never spread to me, and I wouldn't have had the pleasure of knowing more about her and her music. On the other hand, I think Jewel is more happy performing for a crowd that really love her and her music, then to a large noisy crowd like in Toronto. It's not really the quantity of the fans, but the quality of the fans. What if a major label found a young girl living in a van who sang at a small coffeeshop. They listened one night and said "Wow." They offer to sign her to their label, but are concerned about public image, etc., etc. which has all to do with the $$$ that the LABEL makes. They ask said girl if she would mind using name that has more common spelling as opposed to her spelling in order to make things flow easier (no mispronunciations, no problems finding the album at the store, no problems looking up the artist's name). Said girl either doesn't care or thinks it's fine and agrees. Record label produces TONS O' Media with changed spelling. We all learn the changed spelling and then when we see something in said girl's pre-label life spelled differently, ask why. This is just a POSSIBLE answer. ANYWAYS...I took a plunge, and a pretty big one. I have been talking for a little while to some people around campus abou;taking my poetry outside school...trying to get booked to do readings off campus and stuff. WELL, tonight, I finally mustered up my courage, took a walk off campus to this cool little coffeeshop in town called Fred & Mary's, and submitted a sample of nine of my poems. The owner was not in, but the old guy who works behind the counter, this really nice man, told me hwe would give it to the owner ASAP. And the owner is supposed to call me, hopefully in the next week or so, to tell me if he wants to book me to do a reading. Oh, guys, please please please be hoping for the best. This is somethign that I really need. Especialyl to divert my attention from the fact that my- relationship with Suvir is most probably over, through this great misunderstanding (really more a matter of miscommunication) and his disinterest in talking to me to find out my side of the story or anything like that. I am really upset about it, because I love him so much and really believed that he loves me. But from the way he has been acting I am suspecting that he lied when he told me that he loved me. You see, you do not tell someone you love them and then NOT get in toh with them for over a week to talk abou;something that is pretty important (in other words the reason why I was unable to see him over my break, and it all had to do with my fuckup parents and was through literally NO FAULT OF MY OWN, but he never gave me the chance to explain that). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be praying for some major miracles to be cashed in here. THe poetry thing is really important to me, as is the whole Suvir thing. Right now it's abou the only two things I think I really have in life that mean anything to me, that are like my soul, you know? ANYWAYS...I am on this caffeine high (just guzzled down like half a latte and it's starting to hit me), and I have to get going. GOts lots of studying to do. THANKS SO MUCH for everything. I love all of my angels. =) =) =) Stephanie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 21:39:45 -0800 From: William E Sullivan Subject: NJC : Musical Interests (Survey Says........) Wow, you guys! I never expected the kind of response I got! (for those of you don't know, I'm the newbie who started that whole thread with one teeny-tiny little question) First off, let me say that I read EACH and EVERY ONE of your posts. And I was really impressed by the diversity, not only as a group, but within your individual lists of artists as well. I belong to several other mailing lists, and I have to say that the EDA's are the most open-minded, free-spirited, intelligent community of folks I've encountered. It only seems fair after starting this thread, that I give you all a glimpse into my musical tastes, as they say as much about me personally as any other facet of my being. I don't want to unneccesarily bore anyone, and since the only way I could tackle construction of this list was to set aside each CD I've listened to over the past few days, I've broken my list into two posts. The following list are those CD's which rate as absolute fav's, and get played several times in any given time frame. The next post, if you're brave enough to continue, will contain the balance of what I've listened to since about last Thursday (it's lengthy, so be fore-warned!!!) Here's my "top-10" : 1. Eric Clapton - From The Cradle 3. Jewel - Pieces Of You 4. Cranberries - To The Faithfully Departed 5. Wild Strawberries - Bet You Think I'm Lonely 6. Natalie Merchant - Tigerlilly 7. Sarah McLaughlin - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 8. Amanda Marshall - (self-titled) 10. Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar The top two positions on that list are etched in stone, and I doubt they'll ever change. The rest of that list goes through regular changes depending on my mood and what's new. Now, brave angels, do you dare take the next step?? Read on...... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 22:46:20 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: NJC: Media Slay >I hate Media Play. A large overgrown store that provides people that don't >know music and don't care. >... >MANAGER: "No. Sorry. We can't do that or then we'd have to give >everyone our posters." Media Play is dangerously close to screwing themselves out of business. Toni worked there for a couple of months before quitting in disgust; in Indiana at least, each store had 8 managers, but no "general manager" who had authority over them. The managers constantly fought over employees, contradicted each other, changed employee hours, didn't communicate, and in general were less interested in selling merchandise than making the store look flashy with displays. They loved to throw things away rather than give them to employees or customers. Toni tells me they sent several copies of Save The Linoleum BACK TO ATLANTIC because they had no idea what they were, and giving them away was against policy. She snagged a few things out of the trash (not the recycle bin!) rather than let them be discarded. Great little store, clueless frigging management. - -- | Greg Dunn | A fatal attraction, holding me | | GregDunn@aol.com | fast... how can I escape this | | gregdunn@indy.net | irresistible grasp? | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Pink Floyd | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 23:01:53 -0500 (EST) From: Meghan Beth Lapides Subject: Who is this???
