And Thirza, I know you dont wanna here it, butyou agree with me though you hate it. Jewel's popularity is so bad,its not selfish it's bad. People are talkin gon this list about how she's "pop music" and her point is to make money. She's a folk musician who is being exploited and made out to be by the mainstream as a pop singre, which she is not. And to say she is doin git for money should have been flamed and criticized to death tby you so-called true fans on this list. Then somebody compared her, astutely too, to Blues Traveler. The thought of seeing Jewel at 10,000 seat places is uphauling and absolutely terrifying. I saw her at the Beacon, maybe 4,000 with the standing room, and that was horrible, offensive, and by far the worst shows of the tour. Yes, part of it was her voice, but come one. these setlists frot Toronto Detroit Columbus DC etc are incredible stuff, I am so envious that I couldnt be there seeing those great shows with those great setlists, they sound truly excpetional, when instead I was stick in a big place hearing pop playlist album cuts done by a maybe halh healthy Jewel, in front of fans, like someone said, who were just looking for something to do on a Sunday night, an event, people who didnt give a damn about her music and ruined the show for the true fans there. I've written about this a lot so I digress now. But, damn right she's too famous, and to say that statements like that are disturbing is ludricrous, close minded and jingoistic(in a Jewel fandom way). And Thirza, I hope you're right, that she does eventually return to small venues and her popularity fades, I hope so, but doesnt it piss you off that your first and only live Jewel experience was that horrendous Beacon night one Show, when now all you hear are these awesome setlists from new concerts coupled with all the stories you must have heard about past Jewel greatness??? Later, Sean Hooks "The only difference that I see, is that you are exactly the same as you used to be." - -The Wallflowers Hopefully that holds true for Jewel and her music, that this isn't getting to her, from the recent setlists, she appears to have overcome it, the fame, the NY show, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 06:28:17 -0500 (EST) From: WARKIDZ@aol.com Subject: Re: Columbus show--please read well my seats were U...not D sorry what did you look like cuz if you were= in the balc...i may have seen you i was just going to go start asking people...hee hee but they would have been crazy. love michelle =3D=DE ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 06:30:26 -0500 From: Brander Lien Subject: Jewel/Juel & iaa/ica I might as well add my two cents seeming I know a little regarding this question.. Ok, when Juel went to our school (that being IAA, Interlochen Arts Academy.. or ICA, Interlochen Center for the Arts in wonderful Interlochen, MI) she graduated in my sister's class.. and they knew eachother, etc. I actually met her, but I was only a little tot back then, so I don't remember much plus she wasn't famous or anything then, just another student at IAA. Anyways, onward with the story. Jewel's name at birth was Juel... my sister mentioned the fact that it was funny she changed her name because the 2 years she was at Interlochen they always used to call her Jewel and throw the idea around but she never really got the impression she actually would legally change her name to Jewel. That is if she did... she might just use it as her artistic name. Well.. I know that doesn't help that much.. but maybe it clears a little bit up. ~brander - -- . Sounds like you heard the boys on a lousy night or something Brett. I wasn't really a 'Burns fan until I saaw them live. In fact, Taking the World By Donkey (their most recent release) had been sitting around my house for about a year after I listened to it ohh...once. How-some-evah....I've been playing th crap out of it since I saw them with Jewel in Boston a few weeks back, and what I hear on the record is a set of folk-tinged, quirky, raw, pop songs with hooks that would make fish beg to be caught! Plus, when I saw them live, these songs were enhanced by their electric personalities on stage (heheheh..STINKY!) and their musicianship. They were tight! But then again, you can't please everyone all of the time, but I definately (sp) suggest snagging a copy of "Donkey" and giving it a listen, they tend to grow on you. I am from the Columbus area and have been a fan of Jewel's for almost two years now. I saw her open for Neil Young last summer and now this show! This show on the 15th was AMAZING! I'm sure everyone has already heard how great it was, so I'll leave it at that. My biggest regrets are: I didn't skip classes to get tickets. I ended up in row Q, main floor, but I'm sure I could've been closer! Second, I didn't get her flowers! I saw some member of the audience walk up to the stage and hand her flowers and I was JEALOUS!! And the third regret is that I didn't wait outside the stage door after the show for her to leave. I thought about it, but because I was still on the high from the show, I thought I'd had enough. The next day, I hated myself for not staying! Okay, now the Rugburns were great! I was thinking during the show, wouldn't it be great if Jewel had them join her as her backup band? You have Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Bob Marley and the Wailers, now Jewel and The Rugburns! Let me know what you think... Maybe we can start something for her! Of course, I would get jealous of Steve if he sang WITH her all the time... He'd either need to just play guitar, or provide backup vocals on HIS OWN MIC!!!!! (sorry, just a little bitter... ) Well, I hope to get to know you all! EDAs, This is my first post after many weeks of lurking. Until now, I didn't have anything special to say (not that this is special, but still...) :-) Such a memorable experience yesterday turned out to be. I bet a few EDAs. That was cool. (Note to those i met: I'm really not as strange as I seemed!) Here's my sorta play by play of the whole night. Rugburns were crazy-funny still. Made up on the spot song about Detroit (sounded like Daytwa, for all you non-french speakers). steve said we are now known as the everday angles, since at a concert someone spelled angles wrong. JEWEL!: This was my first Jewel experience, so if I get some of the titles wrong, sorry. She came out, ppl screamed, she didn't wait for them to calm down, continued on with "NYA", (love that song!). After she finished she told us all, "If you're talking, Shut Up!!!." Jewel's cool. (now let's count how many times i say that.) "Morning song" came next, then "Wanna Catch A Cold With Me", which she referred to as a polka song and said groups like no doubt and garabage are going back to the studio to think of something new. Polka's are the future or something like that. She said she was here to resurrect them. Little Sister was next. Then "Sometimes it be that way". "Foolish Games" That's about the time, these 4 drunk ppl finally took their seats. The one guy even asked who jewel was. Now if he didn't know why was he there? and he even had one of the Jewel T-Shirts on. Then he decided he'd share with us that he thought she looked hot, well as far as he could see from where we were. Meanwhile she's still singing, and he's just being annoying and making it hard to hear. Anyways, then came YWM4M, steve came out and the celloist(didn't quite catch his name). Steve stayed to play "adrian" with her. I believe the rest of the rugburns came out, as well. During this song when jewel asks "adrian come out and play" some guy yelled, "i'll play with you jewel". Next was a song, i'll call it "cleveland". "run, tonto, run". One fan or maybe he wasn't yelled "yodel" and another guy told him to "shut up". That was cool. Someone yelled, "happy st. patrick's day, jewel" jewel: "is it st patrick's day today?" guy: "tomorrow" jewel: "Then what are you so excited about?" she then talked about how she never thought this many ppl would ever come to see her play. and that it's been 3 years since the album and it's just now starting to catch on. She said, "foolish games" will be the 3rd single, but they're saying it's not a radio song 'cause it's too long, so she told us to call the radio stations and request it, because that works. then she gave us a little evil laugh. continued on with "deep water" She paused for a sec and someone yelled "race car driver" and i THINK she said "like i'll really remember" (but she ended up singing it later so i don't know). more "yodel" requests. she was just ignoring them. "just passing time", "Fragile Flame", "Old Lover's House", with steve. Ppl were cheering for them to kiss, since while singing they looked like they were, 'cause they were that close. "race car driver". she asks for requests, there was an "i love you jewel" where she commented "enough bud light for that guy". someone asked for the poem song, but she didn't know it. she asked if anyone had a copy to send it her. she said "i'd love to remember that song". :-) she continued saying "here's one you didn't request" "carnivore". "angel stanging by". talked about the grammys. didn't mention the dress, just about how she felt dorky when they were mentioning the pop vocal category, and they showed her WWSYS video and she said it looked like she had to pee the whole video standing in the bathroom. ended with "chime bells". Encore: she introduced the celloist, john castro, and stinky. "wwsys" ppl gave her gifts. told a story about some guy that said he was sorry for our generation, and the famous quote i always am hearing about "our hand manifest thought, we become what we believe" ended with "amen". all in all a excellent night, both band's time did see short. observations: jewel and steve shared the same guitar, why? and when they sang duets, they used the same microphone. *curious* is all.. I agree with whoever talked about music and money...I don't have enough money so i don't have enough music! Of course i probably will never have enough music. Other stuff i wanted to say/ask: I first saw Jewel on Good Morning America on military TV in South Korea and immediately loved her, anyways what was the date for that? Feb. 11 1996? Also despite the fact that there are only 2 copies of POY in this country i did hear her on Hungarian radio once, believe me that is a breakthrough they never play good songs here. It's part of the Rockfest '97 sponsored by Blockbuster. I think of it as an honor for her to be one of the 6 acts there,(among them Bush and No Doubt), but it's not my idea of a Jewel-type setting, outside, in June, during the day, in Texas....sizzle sizzle. Although I AM going, I doubt it will compare to the private performance (about 200 people) I saw her play at in Houston last December. It's alllllll over. *sigh* well, three shows in one week. I'm still floating. WOW. I'm gonna for-go the in detail show and POST SHOW analysis and leave it to Tim, cuz I know yas don't wanna hear it a zillion times. SO, my more etherial review and why my life rocks... Columbus: there are too many Wendy's. We recruited all kinds of people into our conversation and may have even gotten a few more EDA's outta it! Nate (my BF) was feeling rather outta place, but we tried, I think he liked it. Jewel sang a new (or so I assume) song with a refrain "but you're in Cleveland today" HEY THAT's MY CITY!!!! :) Steve Poltz renamed us the "EveryDay Angles" cuz apparently someone in Indy spelled 'Angel' wrong (who's gonna admit it???). post show... oh who needs details? Shelly saw the inside of the frickin' tour bus! They started up the buses, I bid Nate goodbye and got in with Shelly, Liz and Tim, proceeding the bus by moments. crashed in Toledo. and we're off to..... Detroit: scariest city I have ever seen in my life. Jewel does not in fact travel in the bus, it's all a facade (sp?) her and Steve showed up in a mini-van or something nuts like that. You get more respect from customs in Dan's station van (customs lady: "ohhhhh... the River!... go ahead "). She sang that Cleveland song again! and we're still the "Everyday Angles". Met some more EDA's (Rebecca!) although not the mystery Mike the bartender. People were crazy early lined up. Concert was good, but not as good as the other two...her voice is goin again and she was off stage at 10 (weird). The Rugburns are insane. and hey, Stinky knows my name, I feel special. The State theatre is weird and detroit is scary (it needs to be said twice). said goodbye to Shelly, Liz and Tim, and went to crash in Windsor! (I'm the car-hoping queen). Got up at FIVE AM. sorta dazed through class, and now I'm here, about to daze right on over to sleep. but I gotta do some public thanking and embarassing first... Shelly and Liz: THANK YOU SO MUCH for takin me to Detroit and lending me your couch! I could have NEVER gotten there had you not been so generous! THANK you, again! DAN.... dan dan dan... listen to this folks: He lets me crash on his couch, we get up at 5am (and not even an evil alarm wake up, I got Jewel's version of Sunshine Superman at full blast, the only way I'd ever wake up at that insane hour while laughing). Then DROVE ME HOME. Did I mention that I live in Cleveland? I woke up in Canada and got to class at 9:30am ON TIME (I'm not on time when I'm *home*) in Cleveland. Dan... you're fabulous. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. and THANK YOU. I guess I'll have to be nice to ya for awhile now, EH? and now the tour has moved on to too far away for me and I'm already going through withdrawl... I can listen to Jewel any 'ol time, I just loved hangin out with EDA's for a whole weekend! and... and... I'm an emotional wreck now (ok so I'm sleep deprived) and... damn it, we're gonna have to have mini-stocks all the time or I'll be really sad. BUT I need to go to sleep now. take care Angels... (and I said this wouldn't be long. HA. sorry). Peace, Mia! ~~~~~ Vale et me ama, Amelia S. The Rugburns opened up and they were Great. Steve, John and Stinky are just great. Steve even did a little stage diving, made up a song of Detroit which was cool. Jewel came on and rocked the house. She was incredible. My favorite part was when she was singing YWMFM at the end of the song her hair formed a small halo over her head. Did anyone else notice that??? Maybe it was just from where I was sitting. I apologize to EDA"s about the Second City Meeting. I was running late and was lucky enough to meet up with Mike and Tom there. I ran into Tom inside at the concert and he introduced me to LIZ and SHELLY the legendary EDA's. Liz and Shelly, I would like to say I have never seen 2 sisters that look so different, but you ladies are really cool. I was lucky enought to talk to Steve Poltz in the lobby in between songs when Jewel was performing. We were talking and he said I have to go so I can be on stage. I turn around and there he is next to Jewel signing. I was kinda bummed I didn't get to meet Jewel herself, but the concert was great. Nice meeting all the EDA's and we should get together this summer when it warms up and party. Before I bought POY, the CD that never got taken out of my CD player was Tails, by Lisa Loeb and NIne Stories. Most of you probably don't remember her, but she had two singles that became popular, 'Stay' in the Summer of '94 and 'Do You Sleep' in late '95. She is THE (2nd) BEST! If anyone else is into her, let me know. I also like No Doubt and Alanis Morrisette, and my dad introduced me to the wonders of classic rock. When I'm with him we listen to stuff like The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplanes (and Starship, isn't Gracie's voice amazing?) and The Who. I'll listen to any kind of music except rap (but that isn't really music anyway). Thanks for listening! It sort of looks like the 3 that I have, but I'd argue it may not be real. It may show up in future ads in the Voice, so other EDAs take a look.
