She's also still a work- in-progress as a live performer. =A0 Or could it be that two years of touring on behalf of her mega-selling= =20 debut album, Pieces Of You, is finally starting to show?=20 =A0 Whatever the reason for last night's inconsistent performance by the=20 singer-songwriter-guitarist at the Danforth Music Hall, her cult-like=20 following appears to be alive and well - and possibly growing - in=20 Toronto. =A0 No matter that the girlish, giddy 22-year-old had a cold, couldn't=20 remember the words to some of her songs and seemed a lot more interested=20 in talking than singing during her sold-out show. =A0 Those assembled couldn't have been more besotted. They yelled out song= =20 titles, declarations of love, marriage proposals and yodel requests. One=20 group of friends even came baring a single rose each for her. =A0 When I finally left the concert after an hour and a half - and she=20 still hadn't sung her breakthrough hit, Who Will Save Your Soul - the=20 flower-offering group was standing onstage with Jewel while one happy- looking male held up a piece of paper containing the lyrics to her song,=20 Painters. =A0 "I'm so terrible," Jewel said. "How can you guys stand me?" =A0 Good question. =A0 The answer, I think, lies in her material - like Morning Song, Adrian,= =20 Don't and her latest hit, You Were Meant For Me - which can be quite=20 powerful when Jewel decides to devote herself entirely. =A0 And it's not as if the evening didn't begin with promise - Jewel alone= =20 in the darkness on a candlelit stage, singing an a cappella version of=20 Near You Always, her powerful, breathy voice echoing through the hushed=20 venue. =A0 "Oh it's so nice to be back in Toronto," she gushed immeditately=20 afterwards. "Can't you just travel with me everywhere?" =A0 Then Jewel brought out a cello player for a lovely duet on a new song,= =20 Stranger, before the evening began to disintegrate with her first lenghty= =20 explanation, about how she wrote Don't when she was just 16 years old. =A0 "What was I so dramatic about?" Jewel wondered out loud. Many more=20 musings followed, much to the detriment of the music. =A0 Still, her neverending road trip - today she flies to L.A. to appear on= =20 The Tonight Show with Jay Leno - appears to have paid off. Pieces Of You=20 has hit the two-million sales mark and currently sits at No. 6 on=20 Billboard's Top 200 album chart. =A0 So what if she recently left the Grammys empty-handed, in spite of=20 nominations in two categories - including the high-profile best new=20 artist? =A0 As Jewel herself said during the show: "Keep buying my CDs so I can do= =20 this every day." =A0 SUN RATING: 3 OUT OF 5 http://www.canoe.ca/TorontoShowbiz/9703070041.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 13:52:56 -0500 (EST) From: gegertha@tiac.net (Chris Snyder) Subject: [none] >>http://www.Mediadome.com/ Coming Soon: Jewel The Alaskan-born beauty was just nominated for two 1997 Grammy Awards. Yeah, from what little I've heard of him I really like it. Of course I can't seem to huntdown any of his music in this town. I'm always looking but at this rate I fell like I'm gonna find STL before I find anything my Leonard Cohen. All I can find is the two songs that are on the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. I can also find a cover of "Everybody Knows" (I could be wrong on that titel) on the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack, but I just don't like the cover version :=DE To sum everything up: This town sux!!!!! The story is quite tragic, and I feel awful for the poor guy, but the story is just plain utterly halirious. So enjoy: Brick Accident Dear Sir: I am writing in response to your request for additional information in Block #3 of the accident reporting form. I put "Poor Planning" as the cause of my accident. You asked for a fuller explanation and I trust the following details will be sufficient. I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six-storey building. When I completed my work, I found I had some bricks left over which when weighed later were found to weigh 240 lbs. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to lower them in a barrel by using a pulley which was attached to the side of the building at the sixth floor. Securing the rope at ground level, I went up to the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it. Then I went down and untied the rope, holding it tightly to insure a slow descent of the 240 lbs of bricks. You will note on the accident reporting form that my weight is 135 lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel which was now proceeding downward at an equally impressive speed. This explains the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collarbone, as listed in Section 3, accident reporting form. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley which I mentioned in Paragraph 2 of this correspondence. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope, in spite of the excruciating pain I was now beginning to experience. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground-and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Now devoid of the weight of the bricks, the barrel weighed approximately 50 lbs. I refer you again to my weight. As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, broken tooth and severe lacerations of my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to change slightly. The encounter with the barrel seemed to slow me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of bricks and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, as I lay there on the pile of bricks, in pain, unable to move and watching the empty barrel six stories above me, I again lost my composure and presence of mind and let go of the rope. - -------------------------|------------------------- Demian Blair, Acme Design Co., Inc. First off, if anyone taped this, please e-mail me, I'd love to have a show I was actually at. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet with the EDA's before the show ( I rushed past the group and recognized Selena and kids) I was with three friends who are not into that type of thing, I'm shy, and to top it off, I have a broken leg, and my seats were on the roof. The setting for me was kind of depressing. I've now seen her three times, and the first two I was very close. This time I was in the second to last row of the balcony. Like I said, I have a broken leg (just got told I can start walking again last week) and it took forever to walk up to these seats. I couldn't really see what was going on on stage, but still loved the show. The Rugburns: I have to offer a different opinion. I could tell that they were very talented, and actually enjoyed the music, but I just felt that they needed a little variety. The "I lost my love" theme just got old for me. My one friend made a comment about "Please buy this guya dog or something" and I know exactly what he meant. The crowd: With the NY shows, I was prepared for the worst, and it seemed as if my fears were right on. Then Jewel took charge and threatened to throw out the guy who kept yelling "yodel" After that, things settled down, except for the idiots who kept screaming. I just don't understand people who scream in response to "this is a euology for a friend that died" Overall, she said we were one of her best recent audiences (although I guess she still liked Toronto better) Jewel: What can I say, I thought the show was fabulous. Nice to hear the two new soings, and was thrilled as always to here SIBTW and Cold Song. Biggest shocker for me was Silver Lining. Haven't heard that in ages, and hasd to run home and pull out the innerchannge tapes. Obviously I wish she could have played much longer, but I was more than satisfied with what I got. If i had the tape id be spending all of my time to dub it for everyone at no price... it makes me mad that someone wants to capitolize on jewel. This guy told me that he really isnt making any money off of her, because he had to buy a ticket to her show.... But we ALL paid for jewel tickets and none of us are getting money back from it... For those interested in this, I would like to highly recommend one album in particular that I think many of you would enjoy. Its Rickie Lee's 2nd album titled "Pirates". This album is one of my all-time favorites & although I enjoy everything she's done over the years, this one is her masterpiece in my opinion. "Chuck E's In Love" (her only hit from her 1st album,) was really not indicative of her style & although I find that tune enjoyable, it doesn't begin to show her depth as a songwriter. When I first met Jewel, she became quite excited about my involvement with Rickie Lee & I've made it a ritual to bring her a new tape every time we've hooked up. One of my favorite things about this list is getting turned on to other artists by members with such good taste! Hope those who've dismissed RLJ give her another listen & those who've never checked her out discover something wonderful. I highly recommend checking out her "Pirates" album. I doubt anyone here will be dissipointed. New York - 3/2/97 - Beacon Theater i met rob and tammy after a screw up at the metuchen train station. we figured it wouldn't be so bad since there was another train set to come. well, the next one didn't come for another half hour. oops. well, we were a bit late for the EDA dinner at the mad fish that rob and tammy had set up. oh well. :) we finally got there to find some EDAs already there. they were: larry, his kids nicole and daniel, jennifer yecko, stacey murphy and her two friends, and amy. and shortly afterwards, jon reade and his friend, anthony amato and renee, and jared and thirza showed up. our bill came to $369, and mike connel picked up the tab. just kidding. :) then we headed down to the beacon. pretty much hung around. larry saw bob. i bought a t-shirt. after a while, it was time for the show to start, so we headed in. rugburns were awesome. i had only previously heard them from the jewel/rugburns compilation tape i heard at lizstock, which i liked. so i looked foreward to seeing them perform. unfortunately, the crowd was a bit loud, and i had a premonition that they'd be that way the whole night. damn premonitions. yes, the crowd sucked ass. i'm not going to say much, but i felt terrible. midway through the show, i knew that i was witnessing the worse jewel show i have ever seen. it was a combination of the crowd's unruliness and her sore throat, which got worse during the show. *sigh* after the show, i gathered my things while waiting for the crowd to disperse. stacey and her friends saw me, and i beckoned them to wait out the crowds with me. after the crowds were thinning out, i looked over to where thirza had gotten the block of seats for other EDAs, and i saw lenedra! woo hoo! i ran over to the group. i whipped out my 8x10 picture of lenedra and i from jewelstock, a silver pen, and asked her to sign it. that was awesome. and stacey whipped out her camera to get a picture of her and her friends with lenedra that i took. then lenedra had to go, and we left for the lobby. in the lobby, the rugburns were signing autographs. there were girls all over them. i was a bit surprised. well, after getting desired autographs, being wisked out of the beacon, and stacey's father arriving to pick her up, we went to the side of the beacon, where a large throng of people were gathered hoping to see jewel. well, deciding that we weren't going to see her, and finding out the jennifer had a pass to the Z100 post-concert party, we decided to go there to see how many people could get in with a pass for only two people. rob, tammy, jen, and i got in while jared, thirza, and amy were left outside. sorry guys. but i got to meet jewel again, got my 8x10 of she and i at jewelstock signed, and got that birthday message recorded. i also snagged the Hits cover promo off the wall. then rob, tammy, amy, and i headed to penn station where amy took the path home and we waited for our train, while being amused by the drunk girl. got back to metuchen and since it was quite late by that time, i thanked rob and tammy and we said our goodbyes. eric :) - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://members.aol.com/boycrash/crashboy.htm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 16:49:23 -0500 From: Crash Boy Subject: Philly 3/9/97 review well, a lot has been said about the three concerts, so i'll make my reviews short and try not to rehash what's already been said. Philadelphia - 3/9/97 - Tower Theater rich melko, laura, drew, and i arrived at the tower theater to find paul kim waiting outside. "Paul! What the hell are you doing here?" i said as i gave him a hug. i had last seen him at selena's house after lizstock. apparently, he had snagged a ticket from lynne and was waiting for her to show up. so, we went in, since it was cold. got past security without them patting me down. thank god. bought the 3 shirts i didn't get at new york, and saw selena by the stairs with other EDAs. met chuck earling (again, he's not an EDA, but he was at temple), tiffany (almstfmous), her dad, steve (wore the akira shirt at jewelstock), his family, and selena, her son and daughter, and sister. paul finally came in, but said that lynne was waiting outside with tickets for russ, who was coming with jared. well, the lights were flashed, so we went to watch the rugburns. they were awesome again, and played two songs i wanted to hear (girl with the wandering eye, not the right time for love). unfortunately, i thought our seats were on the floor, but they turned out to be in the balcony. dammit. oh well. jewel came out and sang a song with them that was supposedly just written recently. either that day or a few days before. it was pretty good. but the crowd was quiet, and only loud after songs were done, so i had a feeling that this might be a repeat of toronto. almost, but not quite, but a hell of a lot better than new york. so, after a brief intermission, jewel came our to a loud roar, which soon settled down so you could hear her. and that was pretty much how it went the whole night, well, from where i sat. she pretty much took control of the crowd when she told security to kick out the "yodel!" shouting guy if he did it again. but i have feeling that they would've been quiet anyway. but the concert was amazing. i was in a trance when she did 'nicotine love' and 'don't'. and the amazing thing is that out of a 21 song set, she did 10 non-album songs, and even did 7 of them in a row, which was pointed out to me by rich. he even heard some girls behind us go "what song is this?" "i dunno. something else i've never heard." not sure if it was in disgust, annoyance, or joy, but it was a curious remark. after the show, a whole bunch of us met at the bottom of the stairs after seeing paul kim in a flood of people. rich noticed him cause he was holding up my EDA sign. he made his way over to us and introduced us to lynne and her friend. and jared and russ showed up along with cj david and her friend. we ran into emily, her sister, and her friend again, and would later run into them again outside in the snow. we were told to leave, and went outside to where a huge throng was waiting by the bus. everyone, this will be a normal sight from now on: a huge throng of people waiting for jewel after the show. *sigh* well, paul saw stinky and gave him the cookies that rich, laura, and i baked using rachel's recipe, and a tape i made of their 2nd new york performance. i later ran into john, who was about to bring the cookies to the bus as he was exiting the bar across the street. he was happy to see them, us, and was going to listen to the tape on the bus later. after realizing it was taking forever and it was cold, laura, drew, rich, paul and i went into the bar, hoping to eat, but after not being waited on for 10 minutes, realized that the kitchen must be closed now, and went to the parking garage where we parked and said our goodbyes. eric :) - -- Crash Boy's EDA Page --- http://members.aol.com/boycrash/crashboy.htm ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #176 ***************************
