Every time I've seen Jewel sing, she's had a guitar in her hands, something that she didn't have tonight, thanks to Steve. It was just weird, seeing her have her hands free instead of occupied by a guitar. Nonetheless, she looked good and sounded wonderful, putting as much emotion into her music as she always have, proving that she still is the same person as she was before all of her newfound fame occurred. It's refreshing to see somebody singing with such emotion. I feel so lucky to have discovered Jewel when I did; after watching her tonight, I thought of all the people out there that are sort of 'missing out' on all of this: her music, her wisdom, her beauty, and of course, this list. And now that this TV performance is over and she has no immediate scheduled appearances since she'll be busy with tour appearances and travel, I can /finally/ start compiling all of this Jewel footage I have and putting it on one single VHS tape... When I get it all assembled, I'd be interested in mailing it to somebody that has some of her Grammy footage, some of the pre- and post-Grammy shows (I have the MTV Grammy Guide that she hosted) and footage of her first Tonight Show appearance (WWSYS #1), and having all of this footage tacked on to the end... Let me know if you can help me out sometime in the next couple of months as I work to compile the most complete tape I can. - -todd ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Mar 1997 01:08:20 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: leather pants :] Ok, I was at a friends house tonight and damned near missed Jewel on Leno but I managed to get the hell out of the smokers den long enough to see her preform (tho I has to turn it from Le Mes :(). About half way through I suddenly notice that Jewel is wearing leather pants. For some reason those things just demand my attention. I think it's just that I'm distracted by shiny things :]. Oh well. Anyway, great show. Kinda hoped that she would do somthing that she hasn't played on the late night circit a few million times, but oh well. >Every time I've seen Jewel sing, she's had a guitar in her hands, >something that she didn't have tonight, thanks to Steve. It was just >weird, seeing her have her hands free instead of occupied by a guitar. Yup, I think she works better with the guitar in hand. Keeps her hands form doing weird things (maybe that is just nervous energy or somthing, I'm like that). It's not the first time I've noticed this either. She had so much emotion, and it was just amazing! I wish she could have been interviewed, but you know, I actually found the Harold Stern stuff pretty interesting. And I don't even like him! Know what the best part was? I got to see it three times, without taping it. Here's how it went: the Tonight Show is on two different channels, but on one it starts half an hour earlier, so I got to see Jewel twice. Plus, on the commercial just before Jewel was gonna come on I fliiped to Muchmusic, and guess what on. Jewel! It was the first time I've seen the whole YWMFM video (I don't watch TV much). As soon as the last chord ended on the video I fliiped back, just as Jewel was being introduced. Perfect timing! I know that was Steve on guitar, but were any other Rugburns there? And when Steve does YWMFM with Jewel at live concerts, does he actually sing some of it, or does he just do background vocal. I was looking forward to hearing him fo rthe first time, but I guess he wasn't the guest there, Jewel was. Oh well. I want to see a live concert so badly now! Just seeing that one song was so incredible, and it wasn't even really live. A concert would be so amazing! *really long sigh* But I'll never get to see one, she'll never come within a thousand miles of me. Well, I'll just have to survive on TV appearnaces. I, too, saw Jewel on Leno, and I thought she was awesome. Like Steven, I had a feeling she was straining her voice at points...it's to be expected, with how she's been health-wise...My one friend commented that she looked rather "clammy," which I think ties in with that (said friend is also a Jewel fan). About her hands...it didn't bother me at all, in fact, I really liked it. The hands are a very expressive part of the body, though most of us learn to 'control' them for fear of what others might think...it pleased me that she feels free enough to express herself in that way. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. And about Stern...all day yesterday I had been going around compaining about him, because his movie pushed Return of the Jedi's release back one week. I even refused to speak his name, that's how great my dislike is for the man, just from the one time I tuned into his show -- it really disgusted me. But then I saw him on Leno and I realized he's a person too, and he's got a mom who's proud of him and a dad he tries really hard to please and he's just a product of society...and I realized that he is an (everyday) angel in my mind, not from what he does or says but because he is a person too and a Child of God and looking for love like the rest of us and worthy of that love. And besides that, I've heard the movie is really good from ppl who don't even LIKE the man...I'm going to give him a chance. I'm going to see the movie. There were two other guys in the lounge and they were like "Who's Jewel?" so I had to inform them of the wonders of Jewel :) Anyways, the three of us watched in silence as she performed an excellent version of YWMFM. I think her voice is well on her way to recovering. Well after the performance, one of the guys pointed out that she didn't seem to know what to do with her left hand, as she was constantly moving it around. I thought it was because she is used to holding a guitar, but I think the extra body language added an extra element to the song. He also asked "Is she a country singer?", I said "What?" Then he said "Her voice sounds like a country singers, or maybe it's just her accent". So in defense of all that is holy in Jewels music (I HATE country, but I apologise to country music fans :) ) I quickly pointed out that she just has a lot of emotion in her voice when she sings, as she doesn't have an accent. Other than that, I think they both enjoyed the performance, so my quest is on to get the rest of my rez floor hooked on Jewel. Wish me luck! Howard was on his BEST behavior. I couldn't believe it. I also didn't like it. I kept remembering Howard putting the moves on Lyle Lovette when they were both on the couch. James Carville, the Ragin' Cajun. You couldn't tell from Leno, but he is an excellent speaker. I heard him speak at a conference and kept my attention. Then, there was Jewel. She did a great job. I thought Steve looked a little dorky the way he was tapping his foot, but I haven't seen him before. I'll see the two in Chicago. Date: 08-Mar-1997 03:37pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Why did NY suck??? Just read the reviews of the Toronto shows. Wow! In comparison, NY absolutely totally and completely paled in comparison. Now, I'm not from N'York myself, I'm from Jersey, but is it something inherent about NYC that wasn't conducive to Jewel and her style. Was it really that her voiec wa shot(that may be a bi part of it, but...) or was it more the disrespectful crowds at the Beacon and the screaming during songs and the sexist comments, etc. The setlists at NY were short and unoriginal compared to the awesome setlist she did at Toronto, and that was so much longer too. Adrian, Painters, Circle Song, Moon Over Austin, Very Big Girl, etc etc etc. New York had all redundant, predictable, POY based setlists, with Tiny Love Spaces being the only standout rarity over the two night span. Toronto had everyhing, there were people on stage, people in the crowd were cooler, etc etc etc. I could keep going on about this but it's just that I'm frustrated and jealous of the people who got to see real Jewel in Toronto, unlike me who saw Jewel-lite twice in a row in NY and didn't get even half as much out of two shows as Toronto did out of one. That's all I guess. NY, clean up your act. Maybe the city intimidates her, I dunno. I remember last summer on her first real headlining tour she did Irving Plaza in NYC and though many people said the show was good, I read the setlist and listened to part of the RealAudio broadcast later, and it was just OK, but then two days later I saw her at the Tradewinds in Sea Bright NJ, on the beach, and it was a phenomenal show, the highlight of hat tour many people said.Maybe she just doesnt'l like NYC, her eing so nature in touch and all that. Well, again, just venting here. It is good because it would have been east to chalk up an obligatory hit or album track, but she picked a real obscure one, and did it beautifully. I have to commend her on the performance, very touching. And it is also good because now perhaps it will be making its way back into her live sets or her next album. I'll keep this one brief, I think you an all see my point.
