Recently, someone (I forget who) raised the subject of Jewel's interview on National Public Radio, on the program "All Things Considered." I haven't heard this interview, and I don't know if it contains anything we haven't discussed before, but generally, that program is a wonderful one; I have picked up a number of interesting musical leads there, such as the Austin Lounge Lizards (my favorites from them: "Rock & Roll Lawyer" and "Jesus Loves Me, But He Can't Stand You"). Anyway, my detective work uncovered that Jewel's segment aired on July 11, 1995, and was entitled "Jewel -- Singer/Songwriter From Alaska." If you want to order an audio tape and/or transcript of the program, you can call NPR at a toll-free number: 888-NPR-NEWS (that's 677-6397). You will need to know the date and title of the segment when you order. They accept credit cards or money orders only. A copy of the tape is $19.95; the transcript is $11.95. If you want to get it by first class mail, you will have to ante an additional $3.95 for the transcript and $4.95 for the tape. First class mail gets you a "four-to-six week delivery." I didn't ask about the alternative methods; but I guess those donkeys who carry the surface deliveries need to be fed, and I think that NPR supports PETA anyway, so you all can figure that out for yerselves. I'll go back to my room, now. ;-) -=-Larry-=- "Donkeys are people, too!" -- J. Castro "I love humanity, it's people I can't stand." -- H.L. The show was approx. 2hrs 10min and certainly had some surprises (I don't think anyone expected to see 7 audience members on stage helping Jewel with the lyrics to Painters!) I will write more about my thoughts on the show later. In the meantime here is the setlist. A couple of other list members who were at the show already posted setlists, but after looking at them, I was wondering if they were at the same show as I was! There was definitely no Rocker Girl (although someone screamed out a request for "Rock & Roll Girl") and there was also no Life's A Big Mystery Show. I don't know the official titles of 2 of the songs, maybe because they're new, or maybe because they are so old, I don't remember them. (I haven't had a chance to go back and listen through my Innerchange Days tapes) I included info on a couple of lines from these songs, so maybe someone could help out if they know the names. Hi EDAs (past and present!) Leading up to last night's long-sold-out show, I was excited, having psyched myself up by listening to some old concert tapes, having never seen the Rugburns before, and having not seen Jewel from within frisbee-throwing range since Jewelstock. Not that Sinjin (or that da** Bearsville Beast) would have let a disc get within 15 feet of Jewel, of course. But at the same time all the negative reviews about rude audiences, plus the news of Jewel's illness and rumblings of concert cancellations had me appoaching this show with mounting trepidation. Adding to my fears was Jewel's cancellation of her scheduled radio appearance, which was a shame, I was really looking forward to meeting her before the show and requesting "Jessica," which I don't think Jewel has ever played in public except for her last show at C'est What (a tiny Toronto club) in her coffeehouse residency days. She did do an interview at MuchMusic earlier that afternoon, where she said that Toronto has always been good to her, since before her album came out, and that it was always one of her best markets. It was cool to hear her say that on MuchMusic, because I'm proud to say that MuchMusic was there and taping her second gig at C'est What, before her album came out, and many months before either VH-1 or MTV noticed her. It was also good to see her because up until then we were worried the show might be cancelled due to illness. James McGarry arrived at my house at around 6:15pm and we hung out for awhile and then headed out to the venue. The show began on a sour note for us (my fault) because I hadn't counted on the rather impossible feat of finding a parking spot within a couple of kilometres (this is Canada, folks!). The show start time came and went while we searched in futility, and the search would have gone forever longer except for a heroic parallel parking effort by James that had him fit his car inside a spot that I swear was smaller than his car. Anyway, we met up with a couple of friends, one of whom some of you JS'ers might remember, Christine, and went inside where the Rugburns were already a few songs into their set. They were fantastic, and getting thunderous applause after every song, they were getting a better response than most acts I see get in headlining slots. I called out a request for "Suburbia", my favourite Rugburns song, in response to which Steve remarked that at least one person knew their albums, and proceeded to a commercial spot for their albums. However, they didn't play the song. Bummer. They closed their hugely successful set with an ever-so-appropriate song, "Sky-Fu**in'Line of Toronto". I have to say that in the hundreds of live shows I've attended in Toronto, I don't think I've ever seen a non-local band perform a song about our fair city, much less a band from the diagonally-opposite corner of the continent. After the set we met up with another EDA and JS'er, Andrew Levstein, and his friend whose name is unfortunately slipping my mind at the moment. We made plans to make a hasty exit after the show to catch Dar Williams playing at 11pm in an intimate little folkie bar across town. I wore my Jewelstock shirt but no one asked me about it and unfortunately I didn't meet any other EDAs. The place was jam packed with people though (1300! of them) so people could hardly move, much less peruse the shirt. :-) Anyway, Jewel came on pretty much right on schedule, at 9pm. At this point I'll break for Part B since my e-mail is screwed up right now and doesn't permit long messages. - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Ito, | "Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who Psychology Dept. | says differently is selling something." University of Toronto | -- The Dread Pirate Roberts Toronto, ON, Can. | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 13:40:07 -0500 From: Steve Ito Subject: Concert Review: Jewel in Toronto 3/6/97, B Part B I never notice clothes, so I apologize in advance for my pitiful description of what she wore. Dressed in black, Jewel looked far more sophisticated and far more like the international star that she's become than in her first shows in Toronto. She was having some problems with her voice right from the beginning, sounding a bit hoarse and having some trouble with the higher notes. But the crowd remained supportive, and she noted it and kept repeating throughout the show about how nice it was: "it's so QUIET!" "you guys LISTEN to me!". Echoing sentiments from 2 years ago, she said she wished she could take us on tour with her through the US so she'd have a great audience every time. She told us about the awful crowds she had in New York, as if we were old supportive friends. Unfortunately a couple of these remarks were marred by shouts of "I LOVE YOU JEWEL" or maniacal shrieks from a particularly annoying teenage girl behind me, but in a capacity crowd of 1300 people a few bad seeds are to be expected. Despite them, she was in general thriving in the enrapt attention the Toronto fans were lavishing on her, and something miraculous happened several songs into the set. She launched into "Sometimes it Be That Way", and it was like she had taken about a carton of throat lozenges. The cold-induced hoarseness in her voice vanished, suddenly, without a trace. Throughout the rest of her show, it was as if she was making her cold go away through a sheer act of will, and if you didn't know Jewel's voice or her songs well, you wouldn't have noticed the occasional momentary loss of the clarity of her voice, or the occasional spot where she opted to sing a passage an octave lower where it would be in a more cold-friendly range of her voice. I didn't keep a setlist but a few songs stand out: The Circle Song, which I've only heard at C'est What and JS; Hotel Angel, Painters, and Adrian, which she said she normally can't do with the audiences she gets. This became pretty obvious because she totally forgot the words to the last two songs, and resorted to reading them onstage before she sang them. She forgot the watercolor roses line in Painters and a whole row of people in the front yelled out the line and held up roses, it was almost as if Jewel's memory lapse had been pre-planned! So Jewel called one of them up onto the stage (they ALL ended up coming on) to hold her words up for her ("hold it REALLY close, it's really small!". At one point he inadvertently stole the spotlight from Jewel when unbenknownst to Jewel he gave a thumbs-up to his friends behind him and had the crowd roaring with laughter, much to Jewel's bewilderment. The whole thing was really cute, the words were really small so she couldn't read them very well and kept looking at him for cues and to point to the right spot in the lyrics - she was utterly dependent on him to keep her on track. Her duet with Steve on "Silver Lining" was another highlight, because it was one of my favourite songs on Neal C. and Jeff H's Innerchange tapes, and I never dreamed I'd see it performed live. It was also really good to hear her do YWMFM with Steve, because he was always meant to sing this song with Jewel. :-) As James pointed out later, a few songs were conspicuous by their absence, and certainly there were a few that *I* would have liked to see her do, notably Nikos, Amen, Nicotine Love, God's Gift to Women, Rocker Girl, and the blues song among them. She did however do "A Very Big Girl", another one of my perennial favourites, and in general did a lot of requests. Jewel was enjoying herself so much she seemed to be reluctant to leave, as she had been at the Bathurst St. Theatre. 10:15, the hour and 15 min cutoff mentioned in a previous review came and went, as did 10:30, and 10:45. It was not until about 10:50 or 10:55 that she finally walked off the stage. This was astonishing because of her cold. She'd cut back on promotional radio spots in an effort to remain well, but here she was putting on a marathon performance, all this with a cross-country trek in front of her for her appearance on the Tonight Show the next day! Anyway, she returned to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from 1300 people. She and the 'burns played a great version of WWSYS to earth-shaking cheers, and she and Steve duetted on a song whose name I forget, but they YODELLED together! Jewel had remarked earlier that she'd taught Steve to yodel and that he made a funny face when he yodelled, but he didn't last night, and Jewel claimed it was just because he was evil and was doing it to spite her. Anyway, in the last stages of her main set that she was showing signs of finally succumbing to her cold, occasionally having some trouble breathing and coughing as well, and it became more obvious in the encore. I REALLY hope that in her exuberance and desire to put on a great show for us she hasn't damaged that incredible voice. Anyway Jewel's part of the concert clocked in at around 2 hours and 10-15 minutes. I watched the time for Dar Williams' set come and go with a tangible sense of loss, but what a show Jewel put on. I've said before that Jewel and Toronto have had something of a love affair going on right from the beginning, and this show capped it off. All you EDAs should come and move to Toronto. I firmly believe that next to San Diego, Toronto is the most Jewel- and EDA-friendly place on the planet. My apologies for such a long post, but it was a truly exciting show. We didn't hang around to try to meet Jewel afterwards, it hasn't been a priority of mine since her residency days when it was almost harder NOT to meet Jewel than to meet her, and I thought Jewel should get home and rested up as early as possible. Anyway I welcome any correspondence from any EDAs, please CC: replies to me because I'm no longer on the regular list, just the Jewel-News list. Hey Jeff, I was wondering why I am no longer receiving the Jewel list. I don't think you kicked me off so I assume my system here at school messed up and unsubscribed me, that happened once before but I just subscribed right back again that time and got back on, that hasn't worked this time, so was just wondering if you could do something for me, a veteran EDA. Thanks alot, hope you got this. Later, Sean Hooks SHOOKS@drew.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 1997 14:53:38 -0500 (CDT) From: "B.Good" Subject: denver tickets? Angels, Well, in a few hours I'm off to go back home for the weekend to celebrate my 20th b-day! And part of my b-day gift is the Philly concert! :) Yayyyy!!! Since I won't be around this weekend to check e-mail, just wanted to let everyone who's going know that I'll be with my family, and we have seats LL 6,8,10, and 12 on the Left Center Loge. I will be wearing my JewelStock t-shirt, and I have long, highlighted-blonde hair, a goatee, and I'm short. I'm not sure when we're going to get there, but I will definitely try meeting up with any other EDA'a before the show starts under the stairs. Well, that's about it here. Thanx everyone for the reviews of previous shows, and I hope to post mine own up after Sundays'. Take care, and don't forget to smile! :-) ~sTeVe~ "He's no use to me dead" -Boba Fett, "Empire Strikes Back" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 16:29:25 EST From: "Jedi Knight" Subject: NJC:Just in case... ...you'd like to get in touch with me for whatever reason over the weekend, I can be found at: AngelSteve@aol.com Thanx! I'd like advice, comments, hints, positives and negatives regarding such a course of action. Currently I'm just thinking about working in a record store (all you record store employers and employees can pitch in your thoughts and experiences for this) or a radio station (ditto here), but advice ranging out to working for clubs, record labels, etc. would be helpful too. Please reply privately unless you feel that the list(s) really need to hear your pearls of wisdom. Don't ya think Jewel would just as soon have another hopefully respectful EDA in her audience as an empty seat? I don't see that the original post included a minimum price...If I was the author of the original post, I would sell the ticket for as much as possible, even if it was for less than the original $21.25 rather than just lose the money, as Ticketmaster wouldn't give me a refund. Tickets are still available for the Indianapolis show...So I doubt jdw is going to get too much more for the ticket than the original price unless someone is just desperate to try and get a better seat than what is currently available. What ever happened to giving people the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming their intentions are self-serving?
