Could someone send me an e-mail and let me know where I can find it? A prompt reply would really be appreciated and help me out a lot. Thank you in advance. By the way, I was very encouraged by Sean Hooks' report on the second Beacon show. I'll be seeing Jewel tomorrow night here in Montreal, and was starting to feel very distressed about what condition she would be in after those two consecutive rough shows in Providence and NY. I'll send in my full report on Thursday. Oh, and in the world of Journalism 101, one of the French newspapers here previewed the show by describing Jewel as a singer and pianist from Alaska (at least they got the state right), who is making her first Montreal appearance (it's her second), and who should be checked out to see if we have another Tori Amos on our hands. Hmmm. Surprised they didn't mention her big hit 'Leaving Las Vegas....' It is now called the Thomas Paine CoffeeHouse. The San Diego AIDS Foundation was having a fund raiser - SD Women Are Gonna Rock You. Because of my quest for talent for EDA Music, I was eager to hear the six new voices scheduled to perform. One thing became clear. As I seek to find "the sound of San Diego", Steve Poltz's influence is clearly heard. A wonderful performer, Lisa Sanders, sang "The Rainbow Song" co-written w/Steve. Look for her CD on MCA. She ended every song with tears rolling down her face. Elizabeth Hummel did a song "Sizzle(her sex song)" that could have been mistaken for a Rugburns song. When I went to see her and Cindy Lee perform at Java Joe's this Sunday, I asked her about it. She was flattered that I heard the influence and admitted he has had a strong effect on a lot of SD artists. But "Sizzle" is her song. Joy Eden Harrison did a set highly influenced by Billie Holiday. But in one song, I thought I was hearing Cindy Lee Berryhill. I later found Joy had played in shows with Cindy. As good as everyone was, my real story is about Mary Dolan. Let me first draw a few pictures for you. Kelly Wilson was the next performer and Mary Dolan was on stage with her. The local TV news camera caused a bit of distraction. On stage was a tom-boy looking beauty. Her movements were at first twichy and jerky showing a bit of nervousness to the TV camera. But there was no way I could be fooled. She had the look of a star. She was dressed the way a farmer would dress his daughter if he knew I was in the neighborhood. Her hair is cropped very short and she had on huge over-alls. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Her presence on stage is magical. Please don't misunderstand, I wasn't looking at her with lust or fantasy, but with enormous anticipation of seeing for the first time a star being born in front of me. Mary noticed my obessive starring and gave me a hard look back. She was only doing backup for Kelly and I was very pleased with her polite role as her voice gave hints of things to come yet she never tried to over power or out stage her. Suddenly, there was an enormous explosion on the stage as Mary broke into her cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart". She literally exploded into the song without any warning. I was not prepared at all. I could not believe all of this power and emotion was pouring out of this tiny person. Back in 1967-68, I had seen Janis perform this song at the Fillmore East. For this moment in time it was her song. It wasn't just a cover that was being well interpreted. It was her heart and soul opened for all of us to see. Good thing she had to take a break because of sound problems. I needed to catch my breath. My hands were trembling as I sat speachless. Erick kept asking, "Igor, what do you think." After buying her CD, I went looking for her like a crazed fan. I tried my best to act like a business person as I begged her to sign my CD. When she returned, she sang several of the songs from the CD. Her soft tender ballad "Leaves" is heart drenching. With only an acoustic guitar, she rocks out in "Everything/Nothing" and asks, "would I do much better if I had a pair of balls?" She answers, "Well, I may not have those balls I spoke of, but honey, let me tell you - it takes some major ovaries to just get up here & sing for you." And sing she did, and she does have some set of ovaries! Just like Janis's first album on Mainstream w/ Big Brother and the Holding Co., Mary's CD has some flaws. But it is easy to see the gems. She has enourmous potential. No she isn't another Jewel. She is Mary Dolan and don't forget the name. A star was born today. Alone on a dark stage, washed in deep purples and blood red lighting that seemed to match her moody music, Jewel stood alone with her guitar and sang. At first her voice was strong and easily met the challenge of the scale leaping original tunes that earned her this year's American Music Award for new artist, as well as a Grammy nomination. But as the evening progressed, her lower register blew out totally due to a sore throat she had been nursing. Had she not mentioned why she stuck to her soprano for the latter half of the concert, the adoring audience might not have noticed the problem. The show was extremely short, just under an hour maybe, because of her throat, or it may have been that she was slightly miffed at some of the audience members. Specifically, the guys in the crowd who repeatedly interrupted her with shouts in quiet moments, such as when she told the story of her pal who killed himself because he was fat and didn't think anyone would ever love him. And during her story of a friend who died of AIDS. During the AIDS segment, a guy credely yelled from the balcony "Jewel, take it off." Shapely Jewel who is obviously still getting used to the notion of being the object of desire to many of her boy fans, was clearly taken asback by the outrageously bad behavior of that fellow. She was so shocked that she switched her set list so that the next song was "Pieces of You," on which she did an onstage re-write of the song in the correct meter that went: "Stupid boy, stupid boy, he thinks he's smart, he thinks he's cool in the middle of my show he shouts `Take it off, Jewel.'" It was impressive at how fast on her feet this young performer was. Fron that point on, she had the entire house in her pocket. The evening's highlight came a little later in her obligatory encore, where she played a very hot version of her radio hit "Who Will Save Your Soul." In spite of it being such a brief concert, it was more eventful than most. "I do believe in angels," she exclaimed out of nowhere during her Beacon Theater show Sunday. Later, she blurted, "I don't really think any one of us is truly alone," followed by this heady non sequitur: "I think by nature we're good." Such sugary prnouncements aren't confined to Jewel's stage patter. She likes to offer small lessons in her songs, too - some smaller than others: In "Who Will Save Your Soul," she tells her fans that it's okay not to be famous. In "Little Sister," she helpfully lectures a friend for the sin of eating white bread. Jewel also offered a new homily Sunday about a fat boy driven to suicide. It began with the line "Oh, fat boy...," and went downhill from there. Such bold messages hold clear appeal for young audiences seeking guidance - which helps explain Jewel's pair of Top 10 singles and the double-platinum status of her debut album, "Pieces of You." It also explains the tender age of fans who filled the Beacon on Sunday (Jewel headlined the theater last night as well). A more appealing reason for Jewel's popularity is her voice - a high, supple instrument that can give her tunes spring and charm. Her voice has given a wide berth Sunday; Jewel appeared mainly alone, wioth just an acoustic guitar. A few numbers featured bass, drum and cello backup. In both her singing and melodies, the 22-year-old showed the clear influencce of early Joni Mitchell. In numbers like the twinkly "Near You Always," Jewel re-created both the scale-skipping and the rushed cadences of "Blue"-period Joni. Unfortunately, the singer battled a sore throat this night, which coarsened her best feature. She also faced some trouble form a new and growing segment of her audience. Among the usual crowd of dreamy young girls were drooling young boys drawn to the star's comely face, which recalls a young Olivia Newton-John, and va-va-voom figure, which brings to mind a new Brigitte Bardot. It made for some squirmy moments. After the first number, some guys started yelling things like "Take it off" and a rather too urgent "I love you, Jewel." The singer answered back in her anti-bully anthem, "Pieces of You," by adding a chorus about "stupid boys" who wreck her songs. It added a bit of fascinating, if ugly, reality to the star's precious world. But it wasn't enough to bring Jewel completely down to earth or to alter the overriding image of her as a literal-minded sprite - the Melanie of the '90's. Today I got two packages in the mail, each containing 5 used CDs I had ordered. The one with the 5 Fiona Apple CDs came in unscathed. Unfortunately, the one with the five Jewel CDs took a major hit on the edge. Very tragically killed were: 2 Save The Linoleum 1 Phylliss Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra 1 Promo - You Were Meant For Me - new version (with the drawing by Jewel) One of the promo YWMFM CDs made it, jewel case broken, but the CD is safe. Having insured the package, I carted the Pieces Of Plastic to the US Post Office. Now the US Government steps in. (Be forewarned, proof of incompetence in the US Post Office to follow!!) Your Honor, To the best of my recollection: Mr Postman: Can I help you? Me: Yes, it seems my package here has been damaged. Most of the CDs were destroyed. Mr Postman: Was it insured? Me: Yes Mr Postman, the Brainiac: Do you have your insurance receipt? Me: ::::: thinking to myself ::::: Well, no, I didn't send it. Me: Huh? Mr Postman-Einstein: Do you have your insurance receipt? Me: Well, no, I didn't send it, I received it. Mr Postman: I'll be right back. He leaves, talks with some guy, comes back in a few minutes with a form, and wants to see the package. I place the bag on the counter and he dumps it out into a tray. Has to be 100-200 pieces easy, the jewel cases are really shattered. Mr Postman: Is this all the pieces? Me: I think so, does it matter? Mr Postman: I'm not sure, I've never done this before and want to make sure, just in case. Me: :::: thinking to myself :::: "Where do they hire these people?" Mr Postman: Do you know what order they were in? Me: Huh? Mr Postman: In case they want to know, do you know what order they were in? Me: I don't know, I think a "Save The Linoleum" was in front, that's all I remember. At this point I honestly wondered to myself if they were gonna check me for Bruno Magli shoes. Mr Postman: Save The Linoleum? Me: It's the title of two of the CDs Mr Postman: {looking at the return address on the package) Is this where the package came from? Me: :::: thinking to myself :::: "I don't belive this" Me: Yeah, that's his post office box number Mr Postman: Well, you'll have to fill out this form...... I did....name, address, cost of damaged goods, phone number. He tells me I'll hear from them. I grab the good CD that lived. Mr Postman: We'll need that one too. Me: Why? Mr Postman: I don't know, that's what Art told me, get the whole package. Me: You sure? This one is OK, I'm not filing a claim on this one. Mr Postman: I'll be right back. Einstein meets Art - Part II Maybe one minute later. Mr Postman: We'll need that one too. You'll get it back. Me: Well, I haven't listened to it yet, it seems unscratched, but you never know. Mr Postman, picking up the CD and looking at it: This is Jewel? She's good!....Just one song on this? What did this cost? Me: Seven bucks Mr Postman: Seven bucks for a used CD? Were all of these used? Me: Yes. Mr Postman: I'll be right back. One or two minutes later Art: These were all used CDs? These 4 broken ones? Me: Yes. Art: I don't know if we can pay 61$ for 4 used CDs. me: Why not? That's what they cost. Art: But they are used. me: So is my grandmothers' rocking chair, an antique. If I shipped it, wouldn't you insure it for what it's worth? Art: Yes Me: Well, these are rare used Cds, and I did pay 61$ for them. Art: Your reciept says $108. Me: 5 CDs were in the other package. Art: Where's that package? Me: Home, it wasn't damaged. Art: Are you sure? Me: Yes, besides, it was a seperate package, with seperately bought insurance. Art: Hmmmmph. Good point. Me: Well, will you pay $61? Art: I have no idea, it's up to someone else. Me: Who? Art: I have no idea. Me: Well, Guess I'll find out. I assume I'll get a check and not stamps? Art: (laughs) Yeah, probably. Me: Well, can I take the good CD? Art: No, we need that, you'll get it back. Me: I'm not SURE it's good, I haven't listened to it yet. Mr Postman: We have a CD player out back. It's one song Art. If it's bad, can we add it to his claim? Art: Yes, I would think so. Me: When will I get it back? Art: I don't know, we'll mail it to you. Me: (and I honestly said this, with a smile and laugh) Can you send it UPS? They both laugh. Art: No. We wrap it up, I come home.
