She played a wonderful version of emily..You could really tell she was having trouble with her voice. it was really straining her. and for the shallow few on the list She was wearing A blue V-neck shirt and a nice pair of slim black pants (the pants looked the same as they were at last nights show) She was wearing very little to no make-up... she looked great...except um... Her hair was a little messy but she still looked great... i hope she felt okay for tonights beacon show... I want details!!! Just as I was thinking "Oh my God, I think she's going to get through the whole interview without saying Hands Manifest Thought" she went and said it. Oh well, what a great interview! Whoever it was (Alan or Mike, I think) who said that Charlie Rose would do a great job was right. And she sang Emily! Just before the interview, I was writing my response to a lot of what was being said about the whole dress thing and Jewel very kindly provided me with some backup during the interview, so those of you who are sick of the subject should delete now. (Well, you have to give me a break - I'm WAY behind on my mail since I was away and I figure I haven't posted much lately....) When I first saw the dress, I thought it was very beautiful. Then I noticed - well, what everyone else noticed - and you know what? I still thought it was very beautiful. And that Jewel is very beautiful. I just think Jewel is comfortable with her body - something I think VERY few people can claim. I think that is a wonderful thing. I don't think she's putting on an act or trying to appeal to a certain audience at all. I think that she IS being herself and NOT worrying about what people think. She's a sensual person and not ashamed of her body. In fact, she's not ashamed of anything she does, how she looks, or who she is. There's something about Jewel that I've come to notice more and more recently - she never apologizes about anything. I think that is something I admire the most about her. She just said on Charlie Rose something to the effect of "be courageous, take chances, there are no mistakes. There's nothing you can do that you can't undo at a later date" (well, except maybe for cigar smoking). Personally, I feel like I need to apologize every other minute for things I did or things I feel I should have done or even things I had nothing to do with at all (well, guilt comes with being Jewish, y'know). I'm really trying to get over that. Ashe Mayfair wrote: >Thus the press will go after her and ignor Rodmean because that is nothing new >for him, but this IS somthing new form Jewel. It is? Then why have we had this discussion about 30 times in the past year? (OK, maybe it wasn't about a sheer dress, but it's been about makeup, short skirts, hair styles, etc. etc.) How many times does she have to wear makeup before it becomes "part of Jewel"? As if makeup could make one bit of difference as to who she is. And anyway, people will find a way to pick on celebrities no matter what they do/wear. Award's dresses are a favorite target and I've seen some absolutely horrendous dresses at some of these things. I'd be less embarassed to be seen in what Jewel was wearing than some of many of the atrocities they come up with. Even with the makeup thing, when she won the AMA award, she wore practically none. Well, the next day on the radio they brought in a hairdresser to appraise everyone's appearance. She said Jewel looked like she just woke up, rolled out of her car and went to the show. (Which side of this damn issue are you on anyway, Selena? :-) When I was in art school, there were naked people all over the place (in the studios, you perverts). Like Igor said, we all have 'em. Who cares? Anyway, as she said on Charlie, "most women bear their womanhood as a cross. I revel in it" or something like that anyway. I say more power to her. Okay, I'm done. She briefly talked about how she prefers theaters to arenas, and how she wished people didn't get drunk and rowdy during the show, that she prefers the audience to be quiet. Beacon #2 was much better, longer, Jewel tended to ignore most of the sounds coming out of the crowd (there were still a bunch of bozos yelling, but hey, they did buy tickets to TWO Jewel concerts, so at least she gets the $$$), and Hands Manifest Thought didn't clock in until 10:22 PM tonight. This MAY NOT hold for other PBS stations, but then again, one can always check. I have never been as enthusiastic about any artist since Dylan was Jewel's age (and I was Leann Rimes's age). In a Rolling Stone article printed last June, a Mr. Sean Penn (no known relation to Mr. Sean Hooks) said the same thing (re: Bob Dylan, not re: me thinking that), in haec verba. Listen to "Sometimes It Be That Way" (e.g., "electricity chases its tail in the hall"), and you might just see why the Bobster wanted to know the words to this one. And try listening to "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" right after "Memphis Blues Again" and see how the roots of rhythm remain. Jewel's even got her own legendary "band" that has its own exotic essence, as Bob had "The Band." I see lots more, too. There's is one word to describe this interview.... EMILY!!!!!!! Charlie says, "What song do you want to play?" (gotta love this guy) and I, literally on my toes leaps forty feet into the air when I hear her say "This is a song called 'Emily.'" Wow.... just, wow. Does she always cry when she sings it? I know I always cry when I hear it. "Hands manifest thought." -- 17 minutes into the interview at the very end. Of course she knew that was the last question, so she always saves it for last... So, who's our big winner? She also said the "When we are children..."/"What makes us happy" speech (four minutes into the interview). But not much else in the way of her "automatic" responses. There's was a lot of something we don't often get to see -- Jewel having to think a little before answering a question. And that's the most anyone's gotten out of her about Sean Penn. When she mentioned Lenedra I expected Charlie to invite her out. No yodelling!!!! Well, once at the beginning but that was just the intro. She sqeezed in marble carving and Mexico though. All this complaining about the infamous "invisible dress"; well she made up for it by wearing the simplest outfit she had, apparently. I didn't see the Grammys so I can't compare; but she was as beautiful as always, this was the first time I really noticed her nose and now I *really* want to tweak it. And I don't know if it's just how I don't often see pictures of her, but she appears a lot older (in the sense of finely aged and experienced); she shed her inogue for this interview, Carter. And there was a lot of expression in her responses; very dynamic and loose. She was obviously relaxed and comfortable with the interview; this along with the depth and variety of questions (How many times has she been asked about her parents?) is why I was really looking forward to this show. Charlie Rose is a great host -- how I wish Jon Stewart was and Tom Snyder would have been if he hadn't ran off to the Bahamas or wherever. However I still enjoyed the Lauren Hutton interview better; but this is definitely a "at-least-as-good-as" second. Thank you Jewel. Thank you, Charlie (is there an email addy I can write to the show?). I hope those of you discouraged by the negative affects of Jewel's success got a chance to watch; as well as those mad at Ms. Rimes for winning the Grammy. - ---pat "Asked by reporters about his upcoming marriage to a forty-two-year-old woman, director Roman Polanski told reporters, `The way I look at it, she's the equivalent of three fourteen-year-olds.'" -- David Letterman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 00:38:50 -0500 From: tiltedhalo@juno.com ('Tom Harris') Subject: Re: NJC: jewel-digest V2 #146 I was swimming in a sea of bliss when jewel-digest spoke... :-> :-> Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 17:20:12 -0500 :-> From: Richard Chang :-> Subject: The slut issue... :-> :-> I'm back.
