I am new to this list, and I was looking forward to receiving messages from it...but from what I've seen so far I'm not so sure anymore. I am an Everyday Angel. I love Jewel's purity and innocence sans naiveity (however you spell that word), and I love the song I'm Sensitive, because I think it sums me up a lot, not because I'm necessarily more sensitive than anyone else, but because we're all sensitive. What I've read so far is a bunch of people complaining, for the most part, and it's real shameful, because I don't see how that corresponds with Jewel as I see her. Of course, I admit maybe my view of Jewel is not what she is really like...and if that is so, if this list is a reflection of the truth of her character, then she is not worth my admiration and (near-)worship. I applaud Piper for bringing to our attention how we've strayed from Everyday Angel-ness. I also applaud John-Eric because I know that it is hard to be the "new kid" and one could easily be intimidated by all the postings on this list...he admits his ignorance "when it comes to Jewel" and I respect him highly for his honesty and humility and for not faking it. That about sums up the whole night. (Please excuse if any of this post over laps Tammy's as I haven't read hers yet.) After a shaky start and confusion over our weak directions, Tammy and I met up with Eric "crashboy" at the train station in Metuchen. We missed our train and ended up leaving an hour later than we planned. We got into Penn Station and grabbed a cab to take us to the Mad Fish. We were 40 minutes late and we worried all the way that we'd be killed by the other angels waiting for us. We arrived and as Eric predicted no one had ordered yet. (Just one of the prophetic things he'd predict that night.) We got the chance to sit and meet Larry & kids, Stacey & friends, Tegan, Jennifer, Thirza, and Jon & friend. We also got the chance to be with Amy, Renee, Anthony and Jared again -- seems like forever since NH. Great dinner at the Mad Fish, and after in the initial shock of the bill....$369.... everyone chipped in their share (and some more --- Anthony), and we were off the venue. We got to the show early and we all hung around the lobby. Unfortunately, our clothes, which are used at home as bedding by our cats, starting making highly allergic Renee sick. But being the brave and social EDA she is, she gallantly stood by and talked with us --- from a safe distance. Next time we'll decontaminate our clothes. The doors opened and we decided to take our seats. Tammy and I were in the upper left balcony .... Amy in the upper right .... Jon in the center. The rest of the gang had orchestra level seats. Upper balcony in the Beacon means if you jump up and cheer you'll hit your head on the roof. Most of the show was just a blur of a spotlight to us. EDA Strawberri (I believe Kristi) was sitting in front of us... amazing all the EDA's you see at a show. What a nice feeling it is for someone just to say, "I'm an EDA," and you know you are with friends -- instantly trusting and loving towards each other. It's a special thing we have here regardless what anyone might say. Shawn posted a set list, here's my version Came out with Old Yella 1. Always 2. Stranger 3. Morning Song .....many shouts and screams from the audience which was mostly teenage girls (not that this is bad unto itself, but you know they have that wonderful exuberance expressed in an increasingly high pitch). And of course, many shouts for people to shut the F#!@-up, which is almost as annoying as the "take it off stuff." Off- rhythm clapping during inappropriate times. Jewel has yet to say a word. 4. Little Sister ......finally a little Grammy talk...very funny, but I couldn't hear it...crowd was too loud. 5. Don't 6. Foolish Games 7. YWMFM - good duet with Steve 8. Run Tonto Run 9. Deep Water 10. Fragile Flame - out comes big blue. For the first time, I did not cry during this song. The crowd had robbed most of it's meaning and the meaning of the show long ago. 11. All the animals 12. Pieces of You ... great impromptu "He's a stupid guy..." Encore 1 - 13. WWSYS 14. Amen ... her voice is totally gone now, and Tammy and I are cheering Jewel on just to be able to hit the notes. The cello adds a lot to this song, I loved it. Encore 2 - 15. Angel Standing by, Tammy knew she won't be able to do Chime Bells...I figured as much too. Angel Standing By was a good note to end on though. Fashion report for those of you who still care..... Silver Silky top with black pants, simple, understated, but perfect for her. Concerning the crowd... they were loud, but I don't believe this is the only time this has happened to Jewel. Seems to me I remember hearing how she has endured such treatment through out her career.... maybe I am wrong... but don't you think this happened a time or two at all those bars she played at. Don't worry about Jewel's popularity.... fame is fleeting, and she'll move through this period of her life just like she has the rest -- with determination, guts, and a enough charm to sweep us all away. (On to part 3 - after the show... the best part) Rob Campbell ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 13:15:43 -0500 (EST) From: NeOblCar@aol.com Subject: Beacon 3/2 - What fun! -- Part 3-after the show (Part 3 of 3 ... After the show) Now the REAL fun.... after the show. We did some mingling and many (Larry & Tegan) had to go right away. We waited for Stacey's dad to pick her up, and were joking about a very fun (but possibly very drunk) Steve Poltz, still mingling with the crowd outside. We knew there was an after-show party sponsored by invitation by Z100. Jared tried various methods to get us all tickets. We went back to the limo area and waited for Jewel to come out. Suddenly, Jennifer says, "Well, I have two tickets to the after hours party." Ok... and you were going to mention this to us when : ) Quickly, I add in my head, "Let's see... two tickets....nine EDA's --- damn there has to be a solution --- why'd I cheat my way through math." Renee and Anthony decides to leave so that brings the number down to seven. Nope... no luck I still have no idea how we are going to get seven people in on two tickets... they must teach that in advanced Trig. This problem still lingered in my head as we walk the 9 blocks to the party. We get to the door and decide what to do. Jennifer had actually invited Eric, but I figure Jared has the best chance at finding Bibi and getting us in. Jennifer leads through the door, then Eric, Jared, Thirza, Tammy and I. Amy waited outside. Jennifer shows her passes and gets Eric in with her... now the fun. Jared starts to explain his story, but I could tell the bouncer was having none of this, just then there is some commotion. "Jewel's coming in. We need to clear a way." I see my opening and take it. As the bouncers are escorting Jared and Thriza out, I slip behind and follow right along with Eric. I AM IN!!!! But, wait.... Tammy's not. "Well, that's just too damn bad," I say to myself. Wife or no wife... she can find her own way in. On the final push the bouncer tells Tammy to step outside to clear way for Jewel. Tammy pointing at me says, "That's my husband and I am staying with him." I give that 'I've never seen her in my life' look, afraid I'll be tossed out with her. The gamble pays off. "Ok," he says and let's her pass. TAMMY'S IN!!! So, Jennifer, Eric, Tammy and I are there with about 50 other people (mostly station employees), awaiting Jewel. We crowd our way to the front of the line and Tammy gets her JS shirt signed and a picture with Jewel. I get my JS picture with Jewel signed. She looked the typical very tired and her voice was gone. Lenedra was sitting with Jewel, but also seemed too overwhelmed by the night. The four of us tried to feel bad for Amy, Jared and Thirza waiting outside. Finally, we walked to the back of the bar so we wouldn't have to see them peeping through the windows looking dejected. Jewel left shortly.... we followed right behind. We watched her limo leave and gloated (just a bit) in front of Amy, Jared and Thirza. We said our good-byes to Jared and Thirza, and Amy, Eric, Tammy and I caught a cab back to Penn Station. After some entertaining performances by a drunk woman and five port authority police, and a terrible headache on my part, we caught our train for the 40 minute ride home. Eric, was great an I wished I could have been more sociable at the end of the night. we have to do this again! Anthony and Renee were their usual fabulous selves, we love you guys! Jared was fun, and it was great to meet Thirza. Larry, Jon, Stacey and Tegan. I wish we would have had so much more time together. There's always the next time. And, Tegan, photographer extraordinaire, gave Tammy some excellent Melissa pics.... a very special thanks! Jennifer, what can I say.... Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Amy, was her usual pleasant self. It is always a thrill to be able to hang out with you!!! In all, not a bad night! And, we can't wait for the summer tour to take place for us to all gather again. It's a fictional story of how the U.S. go to war with the Russians (it was written in 1987 so there was still a little friction between the two), and it causes WWIII and wipes out almost all the people in the world except for a few chosen one's. One being a young girl named Sue WANda, who has the gift of life within her and she is the one to lead the rest of the people to a new better life. Now it's not all luvy duvy because there are evils searching to destroy Swan and her follower's and... if you want to know the rest you'll have to read it. Now to my point, after reading this book I realized that this character is almost identicle to Jewel herself and I love this character, she's awsome. She's a bright angel of light who gives the message of hope and goodness. I hope one of you guys or gals read it, I think it's worth the time because it's about 960 pages. Gian.C. GA's would be responsible for: - -- Protecting the integrity of Jewel's music - -- Educating fellow concert goers on proper listening ettiquette Ways of accomplishing this are up for discussion. Here are a few ideas: - - Make security aware of past problems. Since most GA's will be arriving early, we can use this time to seek out the security people and politely inform them of our concerns. If a number of people approach them they should begin to get the message. - -Signs. Small concealable signs which could be held up at the appropriate time might help to remind people. (something similar to what they use at golf courses - QUIET PLEASE) - -Notes. Something like a business card with a simple request to respect each other and Jewel's music. - -Word of mouth. Let your feelings be known to your neighbor before the show starts. Of course, any action taken must be consistent with being a GAURDIAN ANGEL -- POLITE & RESPECTFUL. I feel most people will react positively to these actions. By the way, make sure you THANK them also. Some people will never get it! Right now, on the AOL site they have three quicktime .mov files for download (2 WWSYS and 1 WWMFM) and have a discography, which is the same as what you'll find on many EDA pages. They also have a rather spartan listing of Web pages, and they (get this!) really play up the Atlantic records page, which is the WORST by far!!! Oddly, last week they (AOL) trumpeted Adam's Pieces Of Jewel" site, and no mention of it here :( Here's their bio from the AOL site. Complete with errors, which makes me believe it's the OLD one from the Atlantic records site, as they call her a "20 year old" in the first sentance, as did Atlantic Records. (where do they hire these people???) Mike __________________________ As a constant reminder of the ground where she and her brothers played, 20-year-old Jewel Kilcher travels with a Tupperware container filled with soil dug from the 800 acre Alaskan homestead where she was raised. It was in these surroundings that Jewel was first introduced to music and to the perfection of the natural world. Settled just outside of Homer, Jewel's family experienced few luxuries. There was no shower, no TV, and the bathroom was an icy outhouse. What she did have was music. Her parents, an Alaskan singer/songwriter duo often brought the six-year-old Jewel onstage and on the road. Soon her yodeling routine was a regular feature of the show. After her parents divorced, Jewel stayed on the road performing with her father. The duo toured singing in bars and nightclubs for much of the next seven years. Jewel's mother would teach the young performer about art, poetry and music nurturing her love for the arts. "Through those lessons, I was given a tool," says Jewel. "After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself. That, to me, is the real beauty of writing: it makes you more intimate with yourself." Jewel's junior and senior years of high school were spent at Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy on a vocal scholarship. "My two years there were a turning point," says Jewel. "I saw a bigger world. I immersed myself in everything - drama, dance, sculpture, music." It was at Interlochen, in her senior year, that Jewel took up the guitar and first began to write songs. After graduation, Jewel headed for San Diego to join her mother for sun and surfing. "Despite my surroundings, this was a difficult time for me," she relates. "I felt a lot of social pressure to figure out what I was gonna do with the rest of my life. I had no desire to go to college but I also felt no peace in traveling or just bumming around. I got a number of dead-end jobs...got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and a little depressed. The idea of spending my life in a 9-to-5 job made me feel trapped and hopeless." Jewel decided to give up on a 9 to 5 career and live in her van. Living on a shoe-string budget and a diet of carrots and peanut butter, she began to realize her dream. Local musicians would share their gigs with her and soon she was offered a weekly gig at the Innerchange Coffeehouse. To Jewel's surprise, crowds were packing her shows and local writers began coming out to hear her. San Diego's "Slamm Magazine" wrote, "Her voice is many things, all of them beautiful. When she opens up, the sound is crystalline and pure." It wasn't long before Jewel entered the studio to record her debut release, "Pieces of You," which features 14 tracks of live acoustic solo performances as well as tunes recorded with Neil Young's backing band, The Stray Gators. At its core, the album's instinctive wisdom is amply reflected in "Who Will Save Your Soul," the first single. As with many of Jewel's songs, the lyrics come from observing the people around her. "One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people walking by," she says. "I remember the details of what people look like - their expressions, their posture, their words. I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal." /\//\\///\\\////\\\\/////\\\\\//////\\\\\\/////\\\\\////\\\\///\\\//\\/\ \ New to the list and confused? I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 21:28:26 -0600 From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: Re: NJC: Re:1st Song ABershaw@aol.com writes: > Mike "I think I got him this time!" Hmm, I wonder if I'll get a response to this since I never get answers to my posts but, hey. This is something I've been thinking a rather lot recently... Have any of y'all noticed the, like, severely cool similarities between Jewel and Bob Dylan? They both write in a storytelling manner, have a bazillion songs, huge fan bases, rock-folk...both are brilliant. Everybody has said that Jakob Dylan will carry on his father's torch, so to speak, and I think that the Wallflowers have potential for longevity, but, truly, as far as style, Jewel seems to be "the next Dylan." Of course, she's her own artist and they are differences between the two, but I see Jewel thirty years from now, a living legend just like Dylan, regardless of some of the flack she gets now. So...there it is. My theory. Voila. Hello, I'm new to this list as of today, and wanted to give a brief hi-ho... I'm Cynthia and I live in Neah Bay with my soon-to-be-husband and our three tuxedo-girl cats. We escaped the madness that is now Seattle, and now live on the beach and have eagles in the sky and whales in the water. Jewel's music is so beautiful - I wish I could have seen her somewhere before we moved here, but someday I will. I have a friend - Shelley Doty - who would be great with her on stage. Shelley was until recently in Jambay... who are now the Jambay Trio - anybody out there know who I'm talking about? Take care and I look forward to tons of mail! Peace and joy, Cyn PS It is "guardian" not "gaurdian", and I take it from that message that there are some trouble makers at shows sometimes? As I was stopped at a red light I hear and *feel* this rumbling! Bewildered I use the nifty automatic window button to roll down the passesnger side window. Apparently stopped at that very same red light in the next lane over is a compact car that is playing music. Mind you this eyesore to transportation was stopped with both windows down, and was in a neglected state of repair. If this car was a horse they would shoot it. But this kid driving the car somehow managed to put in a sound system that was essentially all bass. Loud Bass. It was loud *before* I put down my window. Now normally I have a some tolerance for ignorance, but today I didn't. This kid is sitting there with his music so loud people in the cars all around him are getting visibly upset. And this mental midget is just sitting there, not making eye contact with anyone, blasting his music, pretending we are not there DISCLAIMER: Can you play your music loud? Yes. Can you play it so loud *my* rearview mirror was shaking? No So fed up, I get to Chime Bells on the adequate sound system I posses in my Honda Civic HX 1996 Black two door with a real 350, V-8, fuel injected engine from a private liner jet. And I *crank* it! Jewel is just going crazy yodeling and its just ridiculously loud not three feet form this guys open drivers window. I wanted to tell him what he could manifest where but sadly the light turned green. And this poor misguided slob drove off, he didn't even have the common courtesy to say thanks for my attempt to enlighten him. Geez some people..... And on the second part of this post I raise an interesting theory. The people that show up at Miss Kilchers concerts and yell phrases such "Yodel!" and then "Yodel!" and "Will you yodel!" May be more of a threat than they appear. DOCUMENT CONTROL NUMBER: 93481 Department of Justice Classified Material From: HAHA HQ To: All HAHA Field Divisions, All Embassies, FBI HQ, DEA HQ, CIA P.O. Box, Department of Drunkards NIACT--TOP SECRET--NIACT Recently brave volunteers have risked inebriation at Jewel concerts to infiltrate this group that poses a threat to Miss Kilcher. These agents have evidence that is soon to be brought before A federal Grand Jury. The charge is that the "drunks" (as the are innocently labeled) are in fact a well organized subersive organization. Evidence points to the following: 1. The drunks support their orgazation by scalping Jewel tickets. The actual dunks attending the shows are mere pawns oblivious to their real role. 2. The organization selects its drunks by using a simple yet timeless test. They simply watch people that buy gum at a gumble machine. Those who ingest the gum and are unable to walk at the same time, while chewing, are approached for membership. 3. The organization and determination of this group is second only to a clan once called Harris. Unfortunatley our confidental informant with that group died while UPSing himself. He was not taught about airholes and died for lack of oxygen. Also Unfortunatley the package was lost in transit. Body recovery efforts continue. The investigation remains open. 4. The drunks have continuously appeared at Jewel concerts across the country. One of their nefarious spies also managed to enter the Grammy award show. And while Jewel presented they managed to shout their battle cry "Yodel." All persons leaving the Grammys were patted down by a strangely eager plain clothes security operative known only as Sinjinn. 5. Recently an assasination attempt believed to be backed by the drunkards failed. The pink frisbee has struck fear in to the hearts of many and has caused the security to take up skeet shooting to prevent any further such incidents. At this point Security has bagged: 0 Frisbees, 4 children, 2 small birds, a bald eagle, and reportedly a Cessna 105. Training continues... All agents, operatives, and loosley affiliated "groupies" are advised not to approach the drunks, as most have a terminal case of stupidity. Please contact your local police, county sheriff, DEA field division, the nearest AA Facility, National Guard Armory, and HAHA HQ if any of these drunks are seen gathering before a Jewel Concert. Also be Advised that many times as a disguise they start off sober. Don't be fooled.
