I told you all a year ago that popularity was bad for her, few of you listened. The dress was revealing but it didn't accentuate her voluptuousness as much as I've seen in the past, at the Grammy nominations for example, it was just see through but actually kind of restrictive in the chest area. She again feels complelled to go heavy on the make-up which is more disturbing then the dress. The dress combined with the make-up gave thousands of people who don't know Jewel the wrong message, it backs up and supports the people who always said she was a talentless tramp who was only successful because she was attractive. This is not true in my opinion, but the mainstream and her own record company are exploiting her looks, even if just a little bit. Now, I'm not saying Jewel should walk around in shalls and cloaks, her sensuality is very intriguing and often a key part of her on-stage im image. But she simply looks better in a slightly less revealing dress or pants and a nice shirt with her hair done simply and with no make-up, natural, cause she has natural beauty and taints it by wearing make-up, trying to be glamorous, etc. I hate to speak solely of Jewel's exterior because it is by far the less attractive of her many sides, but it is an important factor. If you want to see a great picture of Jewel, check out the new Rolling Stone, the ad for Pieces of You. Amazing. Little or no make-up, a soft but direct look right into the camera, a tight shirt showing a little cleavage but nothing you could call slutty. And the caption: Honest. Simple. Human. And by the way, I am very anxious to see Jewel at the Beacon tomorrow, what little has been said on this list about her previous shows sounds very good as far as performance and song selection if a little short in duration, and the best part is, it's mostly acoustic and not the commercialized though excellent band material. Yup, there are mountains in Alaska. But, the White Buffalo Woman (Canupa Wakan) legend is mainly from Plains culture (particularly Oglala-Lakota). Probably the best account I've found is that in _The_Sacred_Pipe_ by Joseph Epes Brown, which is based on a telling of the legend and ritual by Black Elk. Alaska would have Tlinglit, Copper Indians and Inuit (in Alaska they might call themselves Inupiat, Inupiaq, Yupik, Aluet or Unangan) mainly. If set in Alaska, this story would seem in some manner apocryphal. Though during the 70's much of plains culture religion was spread through north america via AIM. Goto http://www.yahoo.com and search for 'irc clients'. If running windows MIRC is a good choice. If you're running on a Mac then 'Ircle' is an excellent choice. If you plan on irc'ing from a unix shell prompt then you probably already know what to do so i'll skip that part. Your next step after getting and learning your respective irc client program would be to connect to a server. The server you will need to connect to will be: irc.mtv.com port 6667 Now the chatroom itself will be set up in a specific channel, which i would guess would be #mtvarena, but unfortunatly I cannot be sure of that. MTV's webpage tells you that you can get on irc to join the chat, but does not give you the server or the channel. I can understand all the noise about Jewel's dress, she could have dressed a little less revealing, but the make up thing? I didn't expect that. She was at a fancy event. It is expected that you glam yourself up a little for these things. I'll agree she looks better with less make up, but if she had worn little to no make up, the press would have been all over her for that too. You just can't get all dressed up and wear the same everyday hairstyle and makeup. It just makes you look frumpy. I usually wear little to no make up myself, but when I have to get dressed up to go somewhere fancy, I put on more make up and do my hair a bit nicer. It is part of dressing up for a special event. You have to glam up a bit so you don't look like a hillbilly. I think her make up looked nice. She didn't put tons of make up on, like some of the other women there. She just wore a more glamorous version of her everyday look. No heavy eyeliner or thick fake eyelashes. I thought it looked good. Not too overboard, but not too plain. I wouldn't start worrying about her make up until she starts appearing in magazines or in videos with lots of make up on, like Sheryl Crow did. She was just trying to get in the spirit of the evening by looking a little more glamorous. Until she starts dressing and wearing her make up like that on an everyday basis, I won't worry about her. I think it was a special event thing for her. Don't stress so much about it. OK, that said, I'll go back to lurking now.... I have the coolest teacher. For English class, we're doing a unit on music. Each person in the class brought, or is bringing, in a song to listen to, with the lyrics printed off. I could not decide which song to bring in, but finally decided on Pieces of You (in the running were Fragile Flame and Deep Water [God's Gift To Women honorable mention]). I played the version from "I Swear To God" because I wanted to have her story in it too. It wasn't that effective (the story), tho, because it wasn't loud enough to be heard clearly, but some people heard it. The song was loud enough, but I kinda wished I had played the CD. Brad (y'all remember Brad?) isn't in my hour, but he has the same class. In chemistry he read the lyrics and thought they were really cool. Gee, I wonder why? (trying to hide the sarcasm ;) I haven't yet borrowed him the tape, but I'm going to on Monday. I know he'll like it. Later that week... What do you know, a girl brings in I'm Sensitive. Gotta get her a tape too. Everyone knows I'm obsessed with Jewel, so some of them were like "Oh, another Jewel song" (traces of sarcasm again). I've been methodically submitting all the lines to that song for the "Thought For The Day" but now I don't have to anymore. One of my friends was like "I can count 5 thoughts in this song" (again sarcasticallly). But Jewel's getting to them. He said he liked the lyrics. I've converted one more Jewel fan, but he doesn't really count. He's my best friend, and has always thought Jewel was "hot". The "G Word" solidified that. He's also a big Chili Peppers fan, so when I told him Flea plays base for Jewel, he said "if she's friends with Flea, she's gotta be cool." My carefully laid hints and plans have not been in vain. =) On Monday I'm gonna beg my teacher to let me play a live performance of WWSYS. I don't know where it is, but it's a very big venue, outdoors, and Jewel's wearing sunglasses. She says to the effect that the audience should remember this time weeks from then, and remember they can change the world. I'm pretty sure my teacher will let me play it because we just wrote a paper on how we're gonna influence the world. Well, that was long. Scott PS: In light of the "G Word", how bout everyone listen to "Jewel Kilcher Gets A Bra"? =) e-mail: brougdms@parkrapids.polaristel.net IRC: #rotterham on EFnet listserv: midnightclub@attitude.org nickname: Wagner Angel Needs A Ride: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/angel.html The Midnight Club: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/midnightclub.html "Adrian came home again last summer. On another note, did anybody else notice that most of her stuff isn't particularly hard to play on the guitar (especially like Near You Always, 1000 Miles Away, Nikos, etc.)? I totally love it, and it sounds really pretty, but then I sit down to figger it out on the guitar and most of the stuff doesn't turn out to be terribly difficult to play. Actually, I change my mind. I think that's a bonus. CH-CHING!!! Last thing, non-Jewel related: I just got my first Joni Mitchell album the other day, entitled "Blue", and if you like acoustic stuff, it's awesome. (Yeah, like after 2-3 decades this is still news.) Okay, I'm outie. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Mar 1997 15:25:00 -0800 From: "Nick J. We are each other's angels, so don't forget that Gene, even if you're not on the list. Now for my subject... I am in awe. First of all, I want to thank Casey who is truly an angel too. Yesterday I got this nice little package in the mail, and who could have thought it contained a piece of heaven? Last night, I spent over 2 hours watching a variety of Jewel footage and videos, all thanks to Casey. I'm convinced Jewel is an angel, or rather, that was reaffirmed. Everything I had heard of concerning Jewel on TV, and then some, was on that video. It was so amazing. As most of you know, Jewel's interview with Rosie is on the JS tapes. I finally got to see that! I was speaking right along with the interview because I knew it, and seeing it was that much more exciting. I am truly amazed by the vastness of this video, and if Casey didn't compile it, I want to thank who did. If I can get ahold of another VCR, I'd be glad to copy it, but don't write me about getting a copy until I say that I can actually do this. your fellow angel, Scott e-mail: brougdms@parkrapids.polaristel.net IRC: #rotterham on EFnet listserv: midnightclub@attitude.org nickname: Wagner Angel Needs A Ride: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/angel.html The Midnight Club: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/midnightclub.html "Adrian came home again last summer. "You Were Meant For Me" was the first single off of _Pieces Of You_ in early 1995. That time, the song didn't become the Top 5 hit is is now, though it spawned the rarely-seen Sean Penn videoclip. "Who Will Save Your Soul" is actually the _second_ single. After WWSYS made good, somebody ordered a couple of different versions and gave YWMFM a second crack at the market. The do-nothing first single became the Third-Single-Biggest-Hit-Of-Jewel's-Life. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Mar 1997 19:10:25 -0600 From: asset.moo@mail.utexas.edu Subject: TONIGHT!
