Bill - wdbartho@aldus.northnet.org - wrote: >"this award means more to me than anything in the world." > -leanne rimes; best new artist of 1996 For heaven's sake, she's 14 years old, she's on the stage at the Grammy's receiving a prestigious award for being an incredible talent, drawing such comparisons as Patsy Cline, and you question her acceptance speech and what she values in life? I don't listen to LeAnn Rimes, never have, probably never will. Yet I accept her as being an incredible talent, and you have to be happy for her. She has such a long career ahead of her and will certainly bring joy to many people the same way that Jewel brings joy to all of us. I don't know why (although I must say I'm not surprised) all of this slander has to go on. Lots of people have said that we should still be happy for Jewel ("It's an honor just to be nominated."), she still means a great deal to all of us, and plus there's that Best New Artist jinx. Yet this slander just continues. Everybody has different tastes, and just because you don't like them, or just because the committee liked LeAnn Rimes better than Jewel, doesn't mean you have to put everything else down. Can I see a show of hands as to who has actually listened to ALL of LeAnn's album? I'm guessing the hands are few and far between on this one. I'm consistently surprised at the amount of closed-mindedness on this list. For people that love music, none of us seem to have patience for music we don't like. All of this has been said in one form or another, I suppose. And I'm not preaching, I'm just throwing in my 4 or 5 cents worth on the topic and the general attitude that grows like a really bad foot fungus around here. I only do this because it kinda makes me proud...or um...it makes me feel good that someone my age can accomplish what she has. Shes gotten respect in the music industry from people who are twice or even three times her age...now i mean thats pretty damn cool! she has an incredible voice and well...you gotta like anyone who can yodel ;) and She has probably made alot of people who would never concider listening to country music to sit down and listen...because i dont know if this will sound crazy, but its kinda like shes showing people that young people CAN do anything they put their minds to. and for the people saying that she didnt work as hard as jewel...well i'm sure she had to work harder...I mean do you know how hard it is to convince adults that you Are good enough? i mean kids usually get the short end of the stick...she started when she was 11 right? so you try just walking into a store when your 11 and see if you get treated the same as adults! you wont...so imagine how hard it must be to enter the adult world of music AND get enough respect to win the Best new artist award in the biggest Music ceremony of the year...its pretty damn hard to do...dont you agree? and in her speach when she said "this means more to me than anything else in the world" It doesnt say anything about her being a bad person! i would have said the same thing...i mean at that moment she must have felt so incredibly roud of herself...and it probably WAS the thing that meant most to her...its a symbol of exceptance. so while i may be sad that jewel didnt get it i am happy for leann...She does deserve it. sorry if this was like totally dumb...but i felt i had to say this...Flame me if you must but i doubt i will be getting all that many flames...Hopefully most of you know i am right (i'm not being arogant) Thanks for listening {{{{{Group hug}}}}} Thirza ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 02:09:11 -0500 (EST) From: EveryDay Angel Subject: The Palace@New Haven Hey Angels, Well, what can I say? You're thinking about _libel_. Libel is something written or published that defames or damages one's reputation. Has anybody libeled LeeAnn Rimes? If so, I must have deleted that message without reading or it got caught by my net nanny. I've seen quite a bit expressed about how many people utterly dislike her music. She doesn't seem to fit the definition of 'artist' many list readers hold entertainers up to. Saying she isn't enough of an artist to write her own material, while unpleasant, is no libel at all. If people were prying into Rimes's life, photgraph her with really red, puffy eyes, then publishing them with some made-up comments about excess marijuana use, then you would have libel. Let's look at it this way: Stuttering John asks Jewel how many unstable actors she's been with. Jewel tells Stuttering John to f**k himself. That's not libel, that's Stuttering John being a smart-ass. Now, If in the studio, John had said the he believed Jewel was pregnant with Sean Penn's child on the air, Both Jewel and Penn would be libeled, and Stuttering John would be prone to getting Penn to bash in his face. (and no i'm not twelve) i was wondering if anyone here thinks of what this mailing list is made up of? someone said there was 900+ people on this list. just think about that. 900 people. to some that's as big as a town or at least a high school. think of all those people. some are in junior high. some in college. some are out in the work force and raising a family. all different sorts of people. and all those people are getting every piece of mail you send to this list. some people use aol, have accounts at their work, or have accounts through school or some other method. but i don't think that all these people have so much unlimited space for all the mail. personally i'm getting tired of everytime i log in there are 150 mail messages. that is ridiculous. people are abusing this. before people send messages they should think about if it's really revelent to send it to 900 people. I used to be on this mailing list ages ago and back then first of all all the mail that came in said jewel@smoe so you could tell the difference between mail from a friend and mail from the list. but the big thing was there weren't many messages and the ones that were there were about jewel. after all this is the jewel mailing list not cry me a river or flame central. it seems like every single week someone is getting flamed. flaming in itself is stupid. personally i don't think the person at the other end really cares what you think about them and your wasting space. you can go ahead and flame me if your imature but it will just be deleted like 90 percent of the junk that comes across on this list. it's really starting to piss me off about the crap that is going on here. that whole derrick/thriza thing DID NOT belong on this list and ya i saw he apologized but still grow up this is not the place to do it and people don't really care to have that mail cloggin up their space. and give mm_ a break that whole thing has gone on long enough. who really cares? and it's stupid and really arrogant to sit there and judge people you don't even know and doing it in public is even worse. yeah i know i just said to some people to grow up but i think a lot of people felt that to. everyone is hypocritical in some way or form anyways. oops there i go again. stop sending chain mail too. probably 95% of the people here have seen it before and again this is not the place. i used to be on a mailing list for another artist. now on this mailing list i thought the guy who was running it was a jerk but actually now that i think about it it wasn't all that bad he was just a bit excessive. he would threat to kick people off if they did not write specific facts about that artist. like you could say so and so is going to be releasing and album soon but you couldn't write why i love this artist so much. stuff like that. but it really really cut down on the traffic. there was no personal stuff floating around on that list and people didn't flame and no chain letters. now i think it would suck if this list was that strigent but i really think people need to think about what they write before they send it. like telling me your wearing purple socks has no value to me and nothing to do with jewel. there should be no need for jc njc stuff. reading the subject heading should tell you enough. gripping about it does nothing anyways and most people tend not to use it. the stuff on here should be jewel or somehow jewel related. aw hell even pull the kevin bacon thread but that still does leave you with telling me your wearing purple socks and i don't care. you know what i mean like she was at the grammys there you go or she was on duets with me and sophie b blah blah blah. grips grips and more grips. i'm just tired of compressing deleting etc. i have limited space and it is time that people realize that most people don't have endless room to store all this stuff. someone needs to pull a rein on this list. it's gotten outta hand. personal stuff doesn't belong here unless it's like you meeting jewel or something or a jewel concert and the eda's you met. blah blah blah. i'm probably coming off sounding like a real jerk but enough is enough. oh and you wanna know something ironic someone wrote a message about people should watch about stuffing mail and that just happened to be their third message in a row. that is also irrating and others have commented on it. your taking up a lot more space doing that then just sending one note. that too is nuts and people should really stop that. seeing five messages from the same person is annoying and once again taking up space. so people thing before you post and i think someone should really be watching over this list. big brother is watching you (hopefully most of you know where that is from :) ) HeAtHeN (hey you can grip about me posting but this is probably only the 5th post since i've been on this thing for 2 years or so :P) and no i'm not hiding behind a handle it doesn't take a wiz to figure out my name sorry for all the gripping but i just had to say something! and like someone says flame privately!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 00:56:37 -0800 From: "Shaun" Subject: NJC: Amazing Coincedence > > PS. Anyone believe in coincidence??? Nov.12 was the release date of YWMFM, > and I bump into my lady the same day that I buy it on POY?????? Do I ever!!!! I've only had my internet connection for a month, so I've never tried it before. I went to Yahoo, and did a search for chat rooms. I picked out one from the list, and went there. When I logged in and joined I had to enter a name. I couldn't think of anyhting, so I put in EDAngel. I figured no one else would know what it meant. I joined, and there was a list of the different rooms and who was in them. I looked through the rooms, not really expecting to find anyone I know, after all, I never chatted before. But, to my amazement, I saw the name cricket in one room!!!!! I thought, can it possibly be Derrick, the EDA who goes by that nickname???? Obviously, I chose that room! When I entered the first message I saw was from cricket, asking me if I was on the mailing list!!!!! I was amazed, the first time I ever go to a chat room, and I find a real live EDA. What're the odds?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? We talked for a little while, but I was rudely interrputed by my computer, which chose that moment to screw up and I found myself disconnected. I got back as quickly as I could, but the time I was back in cricket had wandered off :-( It didn't really matter, at that point, since my mom came down and insisted I give up the computer to her. That's okay, I actaully got to talk to an EDA in real time (for a few minutes, anyways) It was nice talking to you, Derrick, I wish I never got cut off. * long sigh * With my luck, that's the last chance I'll ever get to talk to an EDA through any medium besides e-mail. First of all, my thoughts on the Grammy's. Yes, it wasn't all that nice to hear that Jewel didn't win (I had to work, so I didn't get to see any of it...), but I also feel that it isn't the end of the world. OK, so she didn't win. Big deal! I haven't used to Grammy's to define what I listen to and enjoy ever, and I never will. It's nice to see someone that I enjoy listening to win an award, but it just doesn't make all that much difference because regardless of whether they win or not I am still going to be able to listen to that music and think the thoughts that *I* want to think, not what some producer or a panel of judges deems that I should think and do. The debate about Jewel vs. Rimes. Hmmm...I say pick who you like to listen to and listen to them, but don't gripe about who is better or worse. They each have their own style and way of things, and some people are going to enjoy that which you don't. Just a part of human nature. OK...enough of the old material. Time for something new...this is just a quote I saw in tonight's night orders on board my ship...sort of struck me as being quite funny..."CO-2 hosereels are currently being scrutinized to determine operational benefits vs. risks." I'm still not sure why it is funny to me, but I will continue to analyze it to figure it (and possibly myself) out. Something else (actual JC!) I noticed today that I never noticed before. Jewel uses her shoulders a lot more than most artists to express the song she is singing...in the Jay Leno version of WWSYS she rolls her shoulders all the time and bounces around on her feet to emphasize the way the song comes across. I've never seen any other singer do this with this much effect before... Can I see a show of hands as to who has actually listened to > ALL of LeAnn's album? I'm guessing the hands are few and far between on > this one. *Shaun raises his hand really high* My god, have I ever heard it all the way through. I went on a hockey trip, 3 and a half hours both ways. My parents had just bought Blue. They played it all the way there and all the way back. I do listen to country music, some of it, being an open-minded sort, and I can honestly say that Jewel is an whole lot better than LeAnn. This is an somewhat objective opinion, too, this happened before I had PoY, so I wasn't too biased then. I liked "Blue" the first couple times I heard it, but it was really overplayed on country stations and I got sick of it real quick. And I'd say it's easily her best song. She's got a great voice, but once you've heard Blue you've heard the best she's got to offer. There's a reason she had to put out "Unchained Melody" I really doubt she'll get another single after teh two she's already got from Blue. There's not really anyhting else that great on there. Of course, all of this is only my opinion. Lot's of people will disagree, I'm pretty sure Igor said he likes her, but we all know Igor's a bit unusual. He's crazy, actually. Don't listen to him!!! Stay away from LeAnn. You know what, though, I'm actually glad she won the grammy. I really don't think Jewel cares in the tinniest little bit, but LeAnn has said how important the award is to her. She probably wanted it more than any other nominee. And if it makes her happy then I'm happy, because I may not liek her music but, being the good EDA that I am, I do care about peopel's happiness. I think, but this is only speculation, that the reason she said it was so important to her because it is proof that she has been fully accepted by the music industry, despite her age. She earned the respect of people three or four times her age, and I think this really is a big accomplishment. And I'm glad it's happening now, because I don't think she has a lot of talent, so I don't expect her to last too long. Of course, I could be wrong, and I hope I am. Does anybody remember when Celine Dion was a teenage sensation? I'm too young to, but I've heard her old stuff. And look how far she's come. I know most of you don't like her, but you have to admit she's a much more talented artist than she was as a teenager. Wow. This is really getting too long. Well, thanks for listening. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 07:57:17 -0500 (EST) From: BORKMAN437@aol.com Subject: Jewel Theme I have created a Jewel theme on my pc. For the desktop, I have numerous pictures of Jewel that I use for the background. When my computer starts up, it plays YWMFM. When I log on, instead of it saying Welcome, It plays the Morning song. Its really very cool. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 8:52:49 -0500 (EST) From: KUNKEL@taurus.cs.lmco.com Subject: Jewel quoted... OK, I'm gonna shoot myself if this has already been mentioned (I kinda skimmed the mail today), but I just noticed an article in the paper on the Grammy's and it included a bit on Jewel after the awards: Reprinted without permission, yada-yada-yada: There was Jewel's explanation for her see-through dress: " Sometimes I don't know when to feel fear. Tomorrow I'll be going, 'What was I thinking?'" And of all the stars mentioned, they only had a picture of her to go with the article. =) Now back to the soap opera that has become our list.... ;) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 09:05:35 -0500 (EST) From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: Re: nmjc, grammy results, my gripes about artists who don't write their material In a message dated 97-02-27 23:20:24 EST, you write: << I'd just like to see people appresiated a little bit more, for writing, >> This brings an interesting point to mind, why isn't there an award (or awards) for the song writers, I mean, MTV does awards for the directors and such, why shouldn't there be an award for the writing of songs - Just a thought..... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 9:12:11 -0500 (EST) From: CONNELL@taurus.cs.lmco.com Subject: Re: nmjc, grammy results, my gripes about artists who don't write their material Tammy wrote: << I'd just like to see people appresiated a little bit more, for writing, >> >This brings an interesting point to mind, why isn't there an award (or >awards) for the song writers, I mean, MTV does awards for the directors and >such, why shouldn't there be an award for the writing of songs - Just a >thought..... Unless I'm wrong (which may just be the case here), but isn't that what "Song Of The Year" is for? The writers? "Record of the year" is for the recorded song itself, going to performer and producer, but I think SOTY is for the writers and maybe the performewr too. As a matter of fact, maybe MANY awards are writer oriented. BabyFace was up for 12 Grammys, and he only sang in like 2 or 3 of them. Others he wrote or produced. I LOVE this list - it has become a big part of me (yes, at the expense of other things - like a clean house ;-) ). I wouldn't want to change it - even the posts that annoy me. We have mentioned time and again that this is like a big family - and families tend to have disagreements and stupid little debates and they tend to annoy each other at times, but they love each other. I'm happy to be able to sit down and read all the posts and go through a myriad of emotions - but mostly laughter and utter happiness, but even sadness and pain at some of the personal accounts and/or insights of our fellow EDA's. I recommend this list to people on these merits and hope to god people don't just resort to jewel only posts. I never want this list to lose it's heart and soul - that people provide to this list. Sorry if I wasted anyone's precious time and space with my thoughts :-). tlc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 08:35:38 -0600 (CST) From: Laura Capello Subject: Re: Top Ten: [annoyed look] > > 4. has never sang anyone else's songs um, i dunno if anyone else has pciked up on this, but jewel does covers too. look at "sunshine superman" and "behind the wall" and "love is a rose" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 97 14:31:00 UT From: "CASEY HANSEN" Subject: Who cares anymore? People, who cares anymore! Great Leanne Rimes won, good luck for her, hope her untalented ass makes plenty of money so she could have a drug problem! But I don't think Ms. Rimes is the problem. If anybody else had won, you all would have the same damn reaction! But can you really take it seriously, I mean they gave Celine Dion the fricken album of the year! And it all wouldn't make sense anyway, do you think the Grammy's are cool enough to give an award to a person with quotes like... 1. Faggot, Faggot 2. Fat boy goes to a pool, sees his reflection, doesn't know what to do 3. I'd share my otterpops with you 4. I drink lots of black coffee and I smoke like a chimney 5. Put your mamma's face on the door, were not gonna see her anymore 6. Up on a mountain, so GAY and so free 7. I'm not a piece of left over...Hot Dog... 8. Their my fish family 9. That cupcake ain't no Hostess 10. I hate fuckin Valentines day Now I know that we love these lyrics but the stupid Grammy people have to make the Grandma's in the world happy! Here are the top four awards: RECORD OF THE YEAR - Award to the Artist, and to the Producer if other than the artist. This category is for a commercially released single, or track from a current year's album. ALBUM OF THE YEAR - Award to the Artist, and to the Album Producer(s) if other than the artist. SONG OF THE YEAR - A Songwriter(s) Award. A song is eligible if it was first released or if it first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year. BEST NEW ARTIST - This category is for a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist. The eligibility year was from 10/1/95 to 9/30/96. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 09:46:20 -0600 From: garnett@webtv.net (Michael Garnett) Subject: NJC: Rugburns CD's Some of you are hearing the Rugburns for the first time and I just wanted to let you all know http://www.abcds.com has all four of their cd's avaliable. People, who cares anymore! Great Leanne Rimes won, good luck for her, hope her untalented ass makes plenty of money so she could have a drug problem! But I Casey, this is your quote. I am sure that there are many who are outraged that you would suggest that she should come down with a drug problem. I don't care if you were joking or not. It's not what this list is about. This list would not condone wishing harm to another under any circumstances, much less over an award wish Jewel herself didn't think she would win or deserved. I understand if you felt upset that Jewel didn't win a Grammy. I share that feeling, but to even suggest that in such a statement is inappropriate, prejudicial, and stereotypical. Jewel would not condone this statement either, even if made in jest. Your statement says one of two things about your thoughts about Jewel. Either you feel that Jewel is on drugs, or you don't wish her success so that she won't go on drugs. I suggest that you think more before posting such statements. I apologize for doing this on the list, but this message also is sent to let many on the list know that they should think more before writing their messages as to whether the post is necessary or appropriate. I am not saying that knowing about other people's lives is not appropriate; in fact, I enjoy these stories and hope they continue as I have made several friends on this list, and hope that I can make more. This list exemplifies the meaning of the Internet, but it is the occasional chain mail or derogatory statement about another which I dislike and fail to understand. If anyone feels that my statements were inappropriate or inaccurate, please respond. I thank you all for reading.
