I have never been to a show and by hearing your experiences, a patch is sown on to that little space that needs a really good memory. To all those who haven't been to a concert, thanks for not making me feel left out. :) ummm deee dummmm oh yeah! I was *very* surprised to find the Rugburns new cd at my BX (Base [I'm military] exchange). Which means they're going the right way on the evolution track because the BX only carries major major artists... maybe someone special ordered it... But I was happy to see it (and cheap--11$!) so I wrote on a piece of paper in my pocket BUY THIS CD! Hopefully next time I go, no copies will be left. :) [Thank you Tom for my copy xoxoxoxoxo] AND now comes the Ani Difranco portion of my note: Who knows where I can get a cheap Ani Difranco cd? I've always been interested in hearing her stuff since I heard about the tampon thing and then I heard '32 Flavors' [thanks Gerrit!] and that pushed me further in pursuing more.... I play it on guitar alot.... One of my favorite songs to play... Anyone here like Difranco and can suggest a good cd of hers? I know she has several... (Rachel's cookies got an aknowledgement on stage later, too! :-) After hanging at our place for a few hours, we headed down to New Haven. We showed up around 4:30 & when I walked in the venue, Jewel was sitting at the lighting console playing with lighting effects. We chatted for a little while & she seems extremely happy & enjoying the tour so far. I had known that Jewel's road manager was an old aquaintance of mine from my days of hangin with the Cowboy Junkies, but I was very pleasantly surprised to discover her new soundman, monitor man & lighting director were also all people I knew from past travels. All great guys & one hell of a team! I hung out & watched everyone rehearse for about 90 minutes. She did a few new things that are still in the formative stages as well as rehearsing cello/percussion arrangements of a few favorites. And although not performed yet (or in a long time for that matter), she ran through a good 15 minute version of "Adrian" with Steve Poltz, that had a bunch of verses she's never performed. It was loose but interesting. So that may be making a return appearence soon.... After the rehearsals they soundchecked a few songs & broke for dinner. We headed down the street & ordered some dinner ourselves. Jared & a friend(sorry, forgot your name) popped in and said hi. They took off to find some other EDAs & moments later Dennis Harris surprisingly walked in & joined us. We usually watch TV while eating, but Dennis is so much more enjoyable! :-) Now onto the show: The Rugburns were great & very well recieved. I haven't figured out setlist on them but Jewel came out at the end of their set & performed a song literally written yesterday that was quite good. I'm not sure of the title, but it begins with the line "My Body Is Changing". The Rugburns ended their 45 minute set with "I'm Gonna UPS My Heart Next Day To You". After a brief intermission Jewel's set began. I know its been mentioned that Jewel is using a setlist, but in actuality its just a "skeletal" list of maybe 10 songs. She strays considerably from this list & adds other songs whenever the mood strikes, so don't believe any rumours of "no spontenaity". OK. Here's the setlist: Near You Always Don't 1000 Miles Away Satallite Stranger From The East (another new one-debut performance-great!!) In past experiences messages like this start big arguments on lists and end up forcing people to leave the list. I believe it is because they are too immature to realize that it is just someone expressing an opinion. I happen to like Mariah Carey and have been a member of the Mariah mailing list and will be a member again in the future. I know I'm probably going psycho but its because I like the people on the list and hope we can all get along. So, in the future when you state opinions please don't put down other artists. Feel free to say that you don't like Mariah or Alanis or whoever else. Just leave it at that. Don't say they don't sing with emotion because some people on the list are bound to like them and will swear to you that their songs are just as emotional as those sung by Jewel. Now that I'm done with that, let me say that I feel Jewel should definitely win the Grammy for best new artist. Then again I thougt Mariah should have won at least one Grammy last year and she didn't either. I've come to the realization that awards really don't mean anything. We all like Jewel's music and that all that matters is that Jewel keeps giving us more of it. I mean, I do, and i > especially do given the 'competition' - but is there anyone else on the > music scene who you think was passed over this year? I've been wondering what I really think about that, too. No Doubt I think is a decent band -- I saw them live and Gwen Stefani is a superb entertainer. But I also think they topped out with their first (and least successful) single "Just a Girl". They've really been given more success than I think they deserve. The Tony Rich Project is very intriguing for me. I usually don't get into R&B very much... to me, it's mainly just rhythm these days. But Tony Rich's two singles have shown me that he has successfully put blues back into the equation, and he does it very well. He plays lots of intruments, and "Nobody Knows" was one of my favorite songs of the year. I haven't bought his album, though, so I'm not sure how much I like him. Garbage is cool... I think the lead singer is cool (name eluding me...), and "Only Happy When it rains" was a treat. The rest of the album is more general, though, and a lot of sameness abounds. LeAnn Rimes had been the first country star I've liked in years, but, well, she's still country. Plus, Deana Carter has surpassed her as the country talent of the moment. As for the artists passed up, I think Hayden, Fiona Apple, Patti Rothberg, Carter, and the Verve Pipe deserved some consideration. As for Jewel, I guess I am rooting for her... her two singles have been music to my ears, and while the rest of the album isn't as wonderful, it does have some other great tracks ("Foolish Games", "I'm Sensitive", "Adrian"). Jewel's music (folk) has to be the hardest to break into top-40 radio, so that's another consideration in her favor. But... I wouldn't be too disappointed if Tony Rich won the award... he's my second choice. - -- Mark A. Igor talks a lot and often loses his track of thinking. Shelly called me and rich melko kids. and she's only a year older than rich and three over me. 'Course, she is taller than both of us combined. Duff is cute. Now she's going to kill me for saying that. I'd like to thank her and her crack/cocaine laced sleeping bag for aiding in the group dreams we had in the sober room while everyone else was being raucous and unwieldy. Tom O has a twisted mind. We love Tom. And yes i am not your normal asian kid. Well, i'm not your normal anything, really. went up to amherst ma with rachel from selena's. driving in snow is fun. slip and slide. i saw paula cole on monday at amherst college. that was good. wednesday i saw barenaked ladies at pearl street in Northampton. then i gave them some clothes. The band Barenaked Ladies played later that night and they were most most excellent. Thursday through Sunday I saw jewel with rachel. Hi Rachel. Rachel is my friend. Say hi rachel. Ted was at all the shows too. Ted is cool. Ted has cameras. He didn't take any compromising photos of me :( best show: burlington, vt- i pulled a dennis harris and yelled out "that's deep jewel" when she was telling the nicotine love story and said that the avenger woman became that which she feared the most. ANd jewel talked to rachel. Rachel is also now buddies with John C. of the rugburns. Mt. Holyoke was also a great show. the orpheum show in boston was good but the crowd was annoying. ditto the new haven show. i thought that jewel was annoyed at both shows. she was kinda annoyed too at the burlington show, but she was having more fun taking it all in stride at that show. the lighting reminds me of the sarah mclachlan FTE tour and also of the cowboy junkies last tour (which isn't surprising since mr. bb says that the crew of the jewel show is basically the same crew of the junkies tour). Bibi is peachy keen. Very nice and accomodating and she actually put up with all us annoying EDA's every night. We love Bibi. She always looks frazzled as rachel pointed out. hey rachel, if this doesn't reach the list, could you forward it for me? i'm very happy that jewel is pulling out some old nuggets like Life's a Big Mystery Show, Nicotine Love, and All the Animals. I'm going to the March 10 show in DC at the 9:30 club. I have two of Larry's EDA posters for anyone going to that show who wants them. I was pleased to meet and remeet many EDA's including: Dennis Harris, Mo Harris, Bill Goodliff and Beth, Chris Moynihan, Steve Melisi, Phil Kelnhofer, the Snyders, Ted and Tessa and friends, Tegan, Jeff Wasilko (i still have that paula cole poster for you, jeff), and...er...everyone else. yeah. that's about it. paul's crawling back into the woodwork from whence he came. Of course, so have No Doubt, and it seems that they've been nominated. I dunno about the Verve Pipe. I love the album version of their new single, "The Freshmen," but the MTV version is filled with a resonating guitar or something... I can't think of any other artists that really deserve the nomination. I'd say the nominating committee did a pretty good job in selecting nominees... Of course, she (like The Verve Pipe, No Doubt) has been around awhile, but the award goes to the year they came into the mass public eye. However, my choice would still go: 1) Jewel; 2) Tony Rich Project; 3) Garbage; - -- Mark A.
