The next stock, I believe, should be in the desert and be called 23 Stock for a number of reasons: some of which are numerical, some coincidental and some which are purely bias. 1. The date should be May 23rd...Jewel's Birthday. 2. The time should be at 11pm (2300 hours) 3. The date is Jewel's 23rd Birthday 4. It should be held at Twenty-nine Palms (a town in the California desert) and EDA's should cut down six palms so as to leave 23 palms remaining. 5. Jewel's middle letter is "W". The Letter "W" is coincidentally the twenty-third letter of the alphabet. 6. If you take the Letters "EDA" away from the alphabet... your left with twenty-three. 7. The name "Jewel" has two vowels and three consonants. 8. The sum of two and three is five... and May is the fifth month of the year... Jewel's birth month. 9. The numerical sum of letters in JeweL is 45. 45 is a number. By errie coincidence 23 is also a number. 10. Exodus 23:23 "For mine Angel shall go before thee". 11. The 23rd Psalms is an epic passage. She has sung epic passages throughout her 23 years. 12. She used to play at the Innerchange... which was two blocks North of Opal and three blocks from the beach. 13. She is nominated for two grammys and has sold nearly three million copies of pieces of you. 14. This post is being made on the 23rd (if I finish it by then). 15. Jewel has two parents and three siblings including herself. Please fill free to add to the list of coincidental variations of twenty-three. So, skip ahead if you just want to get to the Jewel part. And forgive me if you don't want to hear this amount of details. If that's the case, please just delete this now. MY PART I've been working like a lunatic under extraordinarily stressful conditions, the details of which I will spare you. Suffice it to say that I worked about 75 hours this week, culminating with a nearly 18 hour day until midnight Friday, and then worked until 5:00 Saturday. I live in Montreal, about a two-hour drive to Burlington, and I nearly decided to forsake the show, as I had to be back at work early Sunday, and the weather conditions for driving were potentially hazardous, as we had freezing rain most of the day. Anyway, my best friend Ron had driven up from Ottawa (another two-hour drive) to accompany me to this show, even though he doesn't even know Jewel except for the two singles. (Everyone in life should be as lucky as me to have a friend like Ron, who's been my best friend for 27 years). Ron insisted we go to the show, even with the weather warnings, because he knew how much it meant to me. Away we went, with me still feeling slightly agitated and reluctant, finally arriving safe and sound at the Burlington Auditorium about five minutes before the show started. This, unfortunately, cost me the opportunity to get together with Rachel, Ted, Matt and the other EDA's who were at the show, which would have been the first time I had met other EDA's. This caused me no small distress, I assure you. Sorry I missed you!! THE CROWD The concert was sold out, at 2,700 tickets - with a shocking 2,000 of whom were under the age of 15 (my estimate). This was the most youthful crowd I'd ever seen at a Jewel show, as the others were always at licensed clubs (18 and over) There was much shrieking all evening, much as one would expect at a Backstreet Boys show....which was mostly fine. I don't mind youthful exuberance, even if it was ocasionally inappropriate. THE RUGBURNS My first time seeing them live, and I was most impressed. They played some songs from TTWB Donkey, some I didn't know, an old Irish folk song (which I've heard many times, but never can remember the name of: perhaps The Bells of Old Belfast?), and "a new song we just wrote this morning", which Jewel joined them for (to the sound of glass-shattering screams from the crowd). When I saw Steve after the show, he told me they still didn't have a title for it. I suggested "If You Come Down", which was part of the refrain. The crowd was extermely enthused about them, for which Jewel thanked us towards the end of her set. THE SETTING The auditorium is simply a large gym. Some bleacher seats on the side, but most of us were standing in front of the stage. In spite of the 'Tiny Lights' motif, there were probably fewer than 100 people who could actually see the candles on stage with the set-up. However, the sound was surprisingly good. MS. KILCHER Jewel came on in black pants and a bright blue sweater, looking very simple and extremely elegant. She was the most relaxed and confident I'd ever seen her. She seemed to be having a genuinely good time all night. As has already been described by Rachel's depiction of the Boston show, she started with Near You Always, doing the first verse acapella. She played the next five songs unaccompanied. In order, Morning Song, Life's a Great Big Mystery Show (that was the biggest surprise for me all night), Little Sister, Grey Matter and Sometimes It Be That Way, sans the Goldilocks verse. Cellist John Hagen and percussionist Debra Dobkin joined her, and they started with Foolish Games. I must admit, I completely disagree with Skinny Pete on this one. I thought it was the best version of the song I ever heard, better than the POY version, band versions, you name it. My friend Ron, who only knew two of Jewel's songs before the show, thought it was the highlight of the night. So if that's the effect it has on the uninitiated Jewel fan, no wonder Atlantic thinks it's a single that will carry her for another six months. Rugburns Steve and John then came out to do You Were Made for Me. Oh, and I agree with some of the previous messages that indicated that Jewel and Steve looked very, uh, involved with each other on stage...if it's just an act, it's a good one. Next were Run Tonto Run and Deep Water, before the 'band' left. Steve returned to join her for Neil Young's Love is a Rose and their own collaboration Silver Linings. Jewel ended with solo renditions of Nicotine Love, Angel Standing By and Chime Bells, the last of which she brought a fan up on stage to teach to yodel. She returned for two encore songs. First, WWSYS featuring Rugburn John on bass, Cellist John and Debra, and some reworked verses to reflect the Vermont setting (lots of references to Maple syrup, etc.). Then a gorgeous Amen, accompanied only by John on cello. Seventeen songs; yes, it was shorter than the other two Jewel concerts I've seen, but it was 85 minutes of pure heaven. I'm sorry that Superdeformed Angel felt so alienated by the new Jewel context. I sincerely hope that others don't feel that way. This is new, and different, but artists evolve, and though some things are lost in the transition, new ones emerge. I was absolutely delighted to have seen her. Yes, it was a bit disorienting to see her with so many people and such a large scale venue, when the first time I saw her there were only about 60 other people. But, the new arrangements of songs I already have such affection for were terrific, I thought. And here I am, taking this little break in the office to share this experience with you all after four hours sleep, and I feel nothing less than wonderful, because my life has again been enriched by this woman we all love so well. Fortunately, only another 10 days before I see her again, here in my home town. And anyone who's read this far, I can only say God bless you... Gerry, a northern angel. P.S. I can't urge you enough to buy the poetry program at the show. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 1997 16:41:42 -0600 (CST) From: Emilia Garvey Subject: Re: Grammy's I'm sorry to be so ignorant and lazy but when the heck are the grammys? :) *gulp* Emilia "The Baby Angel" Garvey *********************************************************** * "I read the paper. For those who don't perhaps recognize September 67, you may recognize one of it's principals, Shannon Worrell (the other being Kristen Asbury), who has had moderate "folk" success. (Dominic, you still around here? - you could do this better than I...) Anyway, to quote: "Oh, a year and a half ago I was what you call a solo folksinger; just another girl and her guitar. I'd lay down to sleep at night uneasy, incomplete. Three miles away, Kristin also lay awake, wanting more than just to sing. One day downtown she revealed her secret to me. Then she borrowed a snare drum from this guy, John. Then she got some brushes and began to hammer alongside me: two girls, both a little less lonesome than before -- only we wanted to sound more like four boys playing rock-and roll. Or was it Patsy Cline? "We worked on this record down the road at Sound of Music studios. It's all scratch-and-dent but I hope we've got a steady start. "Shannon - 7/31/96" Their debut album, "Lucky Shoe" has been out since last October and has spent many weeks in my CD player. Not surprisingly, I've not had the opportunity to catch them live, but they will be coming within 120 miles of me (for the first time I'm aware of, certainly the first time since the album was released) this Friday and I'll be there. They've been opening for Wilco for quite a while, but for some $#@$#! reason someone else always seems to open for Wilco when they play here. bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 1997 18:34:13 EST From: Strayer Drew E Subject: chicago-i'll pay for gas hi fellow EDA's, i have a ticket to the chicago show March 20th.
