Aside from a few mike problems during her first few tunes, it went smoothly. The Rugburns opened and joined her for several tunes during her set. Therin lies the intrigue.... Okay, Steve Poltz came out and did a few tunes with her, a great improve song about Boston, he played guitar and harmonized on "YWMFM", and then the two of them did "Old Lover's House". Now....I thought maybe it was just me, but I looked around and everyone had the same smiling, giddy look on thier faces...Steve and Jewel were sharing a mike, singing *real* close together, looking into eachothers eyes, and almost whispering at eachother. I was honestly waiting for them to stop singing and kiss! LIke I said, at 1st I thought it was just me....but afterwards I talked to my friends I was with and a few other people on the way home and they all thought the same thing! I've never seen them do this song together before, so I don;t know if this was a "bit", something they do every time, or if what we all felt was just thier reaction off eachother. But I tell ya...there was some energy there! I would love to know what other people who saw tha Boston show though, and if anyone else knows of this happening before, please share! THANKS! Hi! I was going through the Insomniacs Asylum and I got to this thing that said "Greetings from the Edge" It had this thing called "Upcoming Concerts" I got lured to check it out AND THIS IS WHAT I FOUND!!!!!! JEWEL Who is this little Kate Mossish-waif-a-rama who calls herself (wait - put you r right hand to your forehead in the most fey way and purrrrrrrrrrr) "Jewel?" She's cute, she's thin, she's pale but can she sing? But now - a more serious and direct question: If you know who she is, what are you doing listening to this crap and pretending that it is good? Look me in the eye, then tell me that you are satisfied. NOONE MAKES FUN OF OUR JEWEL! GRRRRRR!!!!! This got me SO mad I almost spilled my pudding all over my keyboard, but that's besides the point. I mean, it make fun of ALL the bands they listed, but this HAS GONE TOO FAR! (i'm in overreact mode, help me) Now I will have to like go to the guy who wrote this's house and FILL it with pudding, and then blow it up to kingdomcome! I'm gonna go rest now ... She was pretty funny and she seemed like she knew what she was doing. She seemed to handle the pressure of her mic not working!! She sang some new songs that i have never heard before. The best part was when she YODELED!!! It was intense because of how fast she could do it. This was my fist time seeing Jewel and i would see her anytime, anywhere in the future. I also have to mention that she is FINE!!!!!!!!! I saw her from the 3rd row and my jaw was at my feet when she walked on the stage. Oh well. The one thing that i wanted was a poster!!! I did not get one so i was wondering if i could get one somehow? If i could, can someone write back. I would give this concert a 9.4 on a scale of 1 to 10. I will see ya all later!!! oh ya her and steve were very close together but it was all good!!!!!! I walk by this place every day, multiple times. 2) March 16th is the Sunday after my spring break starts, so two days previously I will have left town (tix already purchased) and while she is giving a concert about 500 yards from my room, I'll be thousands of miles away. Now, this is just too painful to be a coincidence. Whoever arranged this show MUST have known that the local colleges would all be on spring break at this time. So, I'm wondering, did they arrange it this way on purpose just to fill me with an extremely brief sense of elation followed by crushing defeat or what? I'm almost speechless at the absurdity of this. I mean, Claremont is hardly a central location for an LA concert (about an hour out of downtown), so seemingly the only appeal of having a concert here would be to catch all of the local students, BUT WE'LL ALL BE GONE! I got to the venue to wait for Gen. Admission "seats" at 2:30. Paul was already there, and we were definitely the first in line. I peeked my head inside and saw Jewel singing, and I ran out to the car to grab my flowers, but by the time I got back they'd kicked Paul out. Tegan and I both got interviewed on the News, even though nobody saw or taped it. John, the Rugburns' bassist, stuck his head out the door and when he went back in I swore I should know who he was. I later went downstairs to use the pay phone and guess what- he was on it ! We had a little bit of me saying to him "I know I should know who you are... aren't you in the Rugburns ?" ( I'd never seen him before and I really had no clue ) . Then he got my and Paul's names, talked for a while, and went our separate ways. When we were standing outside, Bibi popped out and we talked to her for a little while too. She was very sweet, even if we did kind of scare her. There was a psycho-security-guard- I-need-to-take-a-shower bitch who TOTALLY blew up at Tegan because people were trying to come out an enterance we'd asked to have blocked off so a girl in a wheelchair wouldn't be pushed off the steps. ( Yes, that DID make sense ). Anyway, the point of that is that Ted, and that girl , Melissa, and whoever else of the EDAs that wanted, could go in 5 minutes early. Tegan, Paul, Aaron, and I decided to take our chances with our already-first-place spots. We all got what would have been second row if there had been seats- but it was great because Ted was right in front of me, so I had a clear view ( except I kept whacking him in the head... oops, sorry... ) . Wendy and her boyfut with people from my high school I never talked to more than me. When the 'Burns came on, the crowd was yelling for Jewel, but they quickly shut up- I think they were mesmerized by Stinky. Stinky stood to le left of the stage with just a snare drum on a strap, Steve was in the middle, and john was on the right. I don't remember the set list, but they DID play the ABC song for me right before Jewel came out to sing the first song with them. Jewel came out for one song, then ducked backstage and changed. Blah blah blah, 'Burns were great, okay, let's get to Jewel. SO... Jewel came out. She started with "Near You Always", acapella- she did the first whole verse just singing, in the dark. It was beautiful. Let me say, the lighting on this tour is GORGEOUS. Anyway, she gets to the second song, and the fire alarm goes off !!! Tegan later said Bibi told her some 9 year old pulled it. Jewel had us yell"LO-SER", then started "Pieces Of You"... but with a twist. She said she wrote it for a girl who pulled a fire alarm. She then changed it to ugly BOY, then ugly TRANSVESTITE "ugly boy girl, do you hate him her 'cause he she's pieces of you..." AND THEN she changed it to Tigger !!! "Damn Tigger, Damn Tigger, Eeyore hates you 'cause he's pieces of you"... then she did a little bit about people in the midwest who are stuck in the eighties... hysterical. It was GREAT. At some point the alarm stopped, and I said, "Hey, the alarm stopped !" and she said, "Yeah, I know !" . Okay, what else ? She played my request "Cold Song" and Tegan's "Nikos" and "Race Car Driver". She held up my flowers and said "This is my favorite part of the whole show." She made a comment about Tegan's lolllipops, too... uhm... that's all I can remember... I went home, slept, went to school, came home , took a shower, hopped back in the car and headed for... Paul, Aaron and I arrived in Boston around 4, drove around lost until about 4:30, finally parked and found everyone else, went to a very strange expensive place to eat, had some GREAT root beer, sang Happy Birthday to Phil ( look, everyone, he IS alive !! ) and went back to the Orpheum. The seats weren't the best, but that's OK. The crowd WAS very loud- lots of random yelling and telling Jewel they loved them. People were screaming their HEADS OFF for Stinky- it was VERY scary. There were starnge women behing us that were yelling in this manly, seal like "aaaaaaaayyyyyyyaa" fashion... uhm... Jewel was ok, not nearly as good as the first night. She missed some notes here and there. The weirdest thing that happened was some guy just walked up on stage, pulled a rose out of a vase, and walked up to her... "hi " , she said. he handed her the rose, security guys ran out and grabbed him, and he was escorted out. Jewel was saying it was sweet , but it REALLY was freaky... She did 2 encores and sang "The Little Bird" for her last one. Lenedra does it better, guys :o) . Oh, and she did My Own Private God's Gift To Women !!! That was VERY cool, even though she left out a verse so we couldn't time the "MOTHER FUCKER !!! " right, and we missed it. After the set we were leaving , and I saw John again !! We talked a little while more ( he seemed suprised to see that I actually WAS coming to all 4 shows ) and thanked me for the flowers, and then said "I'll see you tomrrow night" , which made me feel SO cool. Then we stood out on the streets of Downtown Boston for at least an hour, trying to figure out what to do, until we finally just decided our standing around cut down our doing something time, so we all went home. yay. Oh, and poor Jared, he had his car towed !! I hope he gets it back OK... Okay, guys , can I go to bed now ? Oh, AND.... gotta say, I think the Mount Holyoke show was BETTER than JewelStock. AND.... But, another EDA has saved a life: I was on a canoe trip with the Sierra club on the Current River in the Ozarks. My friend Katie's canoe capsized as they went around a turn. The canoe got wedged on this log, but its contents shot downstream. Katie was headed directly for a strainer (overhanging tree branches that hold things underwater. The top canoeist in the world a couple years back drowned in one) and she couldn't swim very well. Without thinking, I dove in, swam as hard as I could, and diverted her from the strainer. It all happened so fast that no one even thought about it. After we collected all the lost stuff, we sat down and someone pointed out what I had done. It still hasn't really dawned on me that I saved someone's life. I'm just that type of guy. Whenever something goes wrong, I have this weird instinct to fix it immediately. In fact, I know I've saved many people from getting hurt and stuff because of that. Oh well. It was much more theatrical than earlier when she would just walking on and saying "hi". Loved the stuff with Steve (great name by the way) - the improv of the "Boston Song" ruled !!!! Their chemistry on stage is terrific and I remember thinking that she should tour with the Rugburns perminantly so this will be a part of every show. BUT overall I was a little disappointed - mainly due to the all acoustic set. I miss Mark and the band. I miss "Satilite", "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone", and "Carnivore". I know that Atlantic records is probably making Jewel cut these songs from her setlist so that her album isn't old by the time it comes out next year, but that's beside the point. "Sometimes it Be That Way" is just so much better with an electric band as is "Foolish Games". Doing "Foolish Games" as soft as she did last night reminded me of the first time I heard the unplugged version of "Layla" by Eric Clapton. I remember thinking "You have to SCREAM that song". I missed the emotional almost pissed off "I mistaken you for somebody else - somebody who gave a damn . . ." It was just too nice for my taste. I enjoyed the show but I think I would have had a totally different image of Jewel if this had been my first show and not my eighth. It was my girlfriend's first Jewel show and I was looking forward to her hearing Jewel the way I have heard her. We saw Paula Cole only 3 days before and my girlfriend said she liked Paula more than Jewel. So after I kicked her in the crotch I explained that she had never seen Jewel live and to wait until after the Orpheum show to make a choice like that. She explained that she likes heavier things rather than acoustic. I agreed and said that Jewel is in my opinion nothing like her album when she's live on stage. I told her about all the band stuff and she seemed to get a little excited about the show. Well, she sure made a liar out of me :-). I say bring the old band back (the 4th tape of Jewelstock isn't being held back for nothing guys). Jewel with a band is simply amazing. Any thoughts? - - Skinnious Petious p.s. But I can't really call them Jewel concerts. Jewel took the stage with a horrible thing sitting below her. A typed setlist. The horror! That means instead of feeding off the crowd in the inactive Jewel concert that we know and love, she read off a piece of paper. More fans shouted yodel and talked during quiet songs. She told fewer stories, during the few stories that she did tell, people interrupted with comands to yodel. She didn't sing any new songs. She sang less songs that aren't on the album, it was a nightmare for a veteran Jewel groupee like myself :-(. I had the chance to talk with Bibi on both Thursday and Friday nights, she was delightfully cheerful and seeing her smiling was uplifting. Still it seems that the Jewel that I first met, is gone. Back then she was so proud and excited to have her own fans. She was impressed that Armand and I had seen her video, since she hadn't seen it yet(WWSYS). There is nothing wrong with Jewel, the way she is, but I'll never forget the way she was. a broken hearted SuPeRdEfOrMeD aNgEl ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 1997 17:10:09 -0500 (EST) From: gregory ianitto Subject: eda cover tape update this is a query, not a report, for an update on the "forthcoming soon" EDA cover tape, put together by eric "crash boy." how we doin? greggor ________________scps_ Schmidt Copeland Parker Stevens 1220 W 6th St suite 300 Gregory J Yanito The Bradley Building urban design Cleveland OH 44113 gyanito@saed.kent.edu 216.696.6767 "aesthetically pleasing, otherwise fly" - soul coughing ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 1997 17:16:02 -0500 (EST) From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: eda cover tape update I don't know how it's going, but I am still working on mine. Now that I've gotten my life underway, I am very interested in starting to pay special attention to my music. I am interested in performing with one other person. I want to play acousticly with two voices and two guitars. Of course, I plan on being one of those! The music I am interested in is sort of like Jewel. I do play one of her songs now, in fact. But I am also very interested in playing music similar to the old JACKOPIERCE, if you're familiar with them. If not, they used to be called "The Indigo Boys," although they rejected that nickname. Basically, I like lots of guitar, lots of harmony, and no band to drown us out. To save bandwidth, that's all I'm going to say now. If you are interested, please send me a message saying so. Maybe we'll be able to get together and play a few songs. btw: I work in Richardson and live in Denton, but will be moving to the city as soon as I find a place to go. Take care, and best regards. Anyway the Cd was 11.88 and I was gonna buy it, but then the girl working said "do you really want the imported version because we have the regular single. They were out of the regular single so she ordered it but I don't know if Emily is on the regular one or not. So should I buy the import or wait for the regular single. She is holding the import for me until the other one gets in. Can anyone tell me which one I should buy...the regular one is about $8 cheaper and if it has the same songs I don't see the difference. Can someone help me out here. I'd appreciate. ~julz ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 1997 18:01:53 -0600 (CST) From: Douglas Stephen Garay Subject: Re: Jewel Concert in Fort Worth OOOOOhhhhhh, i hope, i hope, i hope, i hope. . . - -Douglas ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 1997 19:21:40 -0500 (EST) From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: JC Import WWSYS There's a BIG difference. She thinks you want it for "WWSYS". The one she's ordering only has "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "Near You Always". The import one has "Emily" and such. I heard of an upcoming concert of hers in Toronto. Does anyone have any extra info??? Then I lost another half hour on the Mass Pike due to an accident. So by the time I got checked into my hotel and called my boss at B.C. Since it was 7:05 I picked her and her friends up at B.C. and we got to the theader around 8. So I was in one hell of a hurry to "pahk da cah". I pahked in what turned out ot be a tow away zone. So I hung out with the angels for a while listening to Tegan's copies of the past two shows. Then, upon the break up Chris and Karen where nice enough to drive me to my hotel. I wasn't tired, so I called a cap and had them take me to the car. The cab fare was $7.50 Then for the car, it cost me, get this...$24 can you believe it? I pay more to park in a garage at Irving Plaza for the Jewel concert. It's imazing! So I only paid $34 in all to get the car back, so I called The Synder's to make sure they didn't pick me up today and wound up on the phone with Chris all night. Hey guys - If anyone is interested in knowing, I got my Guitar today, I ended up going with a fairly inexpensive Yamaha F310. I really liked 2 of the ones I saw at Hiway music in East Brunswick, but they were a little more than I wanted to spend, plus the guy was just not very helpful. We ended up just leaving about the 4th time he just walked away to help someone else who'd come in - it was bad enough he had to look up the prices each time without waiting in between each time - we were there for close to an hour with only maybe 15 min. of his help. Oh well, I got one anyways. I start my class on 3/3 - the day after we see Jewel in NY, so I should be very psyched to get started. Thanks again to all of you who gave me tips and if anyone else wants to add to them, I'm always happy to hear them. tlc (Tammy) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 1997 20:34:37 -0500 (EST) From: Dollphini@aol.com Subject: Wierd...hehe Guess what, last night I was listening to Chimebells on the computer, and my mom wanted to play. So I got offline, but it was still playing. My mom was like, Amber, do you realize this is yodeling? I was like yeah mom, it's Jewel. She was like, who's Jewel again. Then I told her the on from Alaska. Then my mom said that didn't clairfy much, because Alaska's pretty big. So then I got fusterated, and said, okay, she's from homer alaska. And my mom was like, wow, the lady coming to work with me on monday, was the city's accountant (my moms an accountant, in case your wondering :). I was like NOOOO WWWWAAAAAAYYYYY!!! My mom told me she'd ask her if she knew Jewel, even though she probably does cause it's such a small town..:), hehe, that's kinda freaky if you ask me, hehe. In other Amber related news, I got this spiffy clinique glossware, it was 12dollars, but I was in a good mood. Also, my mom said I could go to the poe show, without a chaperone, my first concert. That really made my day. All available vcrs and tape dubbers were in constant demand. I think everybody came equiped with at least 5 blank tapes. I am one lucky girl because I made out like a bandit!!! I have finally sorted through the loot that was given to me and I am sitting here with a huge grin on my face! It started at Jewelstock when I was walking back to my room with my walkman on, listening to my newly acquired copy of Innerchange Days. I bumped into Mr. BB and the Jerry Seinfeld lookalike. (I cant for the life of me remember his name..) "Whatcha listening too?" they ask. I tell them that I haven't yet heard Jewel yodeling and I cant wait to hear it. So what do they do? They GIVE me their traveling copy of The Paradise Show.. same one that is currently being treed. They tell me that I will be able to hear it more clearly on this tape. At the time, I wasnt aware of what I was recieving. I said "THANKS!" and fell asleep before the yodeling began. Since then, I have been very generous in sharing Jewels music. I havent kept score. Who owes who what.. always felt that it would all come out in the laundry. You know what?! IT DOES!! :) (speaking of laundry... I've got laundry up to HERE!!!) So, for you who gave so generously to me at Lizstock, and you know who you are, thank you! This is also a Jewelstock memory, because that is where the generousity began for me.
