Subject: From the Boston Globe - 2/21/97 Rock Notes: Hard work has polished Jewel's career By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 02/21/97 So you really wanna be a rock 'n' roll star? Try this schedule: Four or five performances a day, starting at 8 a.m. at a high school, then at one or two radio stations, a record store, and finally a regular gig at night. Then drive an average of three hours to the next city, get three hours sleep and do it all again. If success can still be measured by hard work, then Jewel has earned every bit of hers. ``I did that for a year and a half,'' says Jewel, whose fresh-sounding album ``Pieces of You'' has sold 2 million copies and spun off hit singles in ``Who Will Save Your Soul'' and ``You Were Meant for Me.'' Jewel is up for two Grammy awards, including best new artist (a category she won at the recent American Music Awards) and she sold out tonight's Orpheum Theatre date in 24 hours. ``I quit the high school shows, but I still do several performances a day when I'm on tour,'' says Jewel. Jewel's work ethic has won her a wildly diverse audience. ``It gave me a fan base that's every age, every race, and every sexual preference. But really, I'm a big dork of rock 'n' roll. I'm not hip, and I'm not a coolster. I'm just a kid with an acoustic guitar who keeps slinging it out.'' Jewel, 22, has been slinging it since she was 8 years old doing barroom gigs with her father in Alaska, where she grew up on a 700-acre homestead in the town of Homer. She later wrote ``Who Will Save Your Soul'' at age 17 (the song is ``about how nobody can know you, we rarely understand ourselves'') and most of the rest of her debut disc at 19. ``I'm still learning,'' she says. ``I have no pretense of having arrived.'' Her success is partly due to her label, Atlantic Records, sticking by her - a rarity in today's fickle pop market. But it's mostly due to an old-fashioned relentlessness. Jewel seemed to take every gig that came up. She was an opening act for such varied folks as Bob Dylan (``He asked me later to recite some of the lyrics of my songs, but I was too embarrassed''), the Ramones, Neil Young, Peter Murphy, Belly, Dave Matthews Band, Liz Phair, Edwin McCain, and Catherine Wheel. How could she adjust to all those audiences? ``Everybody has a heart. Everybody has hope. As long as it's sincere music, people are going to be sincere about hearing it,'' she says. Backed by a cellist and percussionist, she's now on her first theater headlining tour, titled ``The Tour of Tiny Lights.'' ``I put a lot of time into the lighting, and I think it makes for a certain mystical experience. There are a lot of pathways of candles on stage. It will be theatrical.'' Jewel is already recording her next album, this time with producer Peter Collins - a fellow chameleon who has worked with Rush, Nanci Griffith, and the Indigo Girls. ``It think it's going to show a lot of growth,'' she says. ``I know that all I have to do is be sincere. That takes a lot of the pressure off.'' ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 1997 09:46:35 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: VSJC: Paula Cole - Pablo Neruda reference at Lilith Fair site Heya Again EDAfolk, Just found this little tidbit at Sarah's Lilith Fair Site: http://www.lilithfair.com Paula Cole "I relate to Pablo Neruda (the poet) in 'Il Postino' when he says that by explaining his poetry, he nullifies the very purpose of its existence," says Paula Cole. I agree with Aaron and James to some extent and share a lot of their concern. I am responding to this so late, because my mailbox is pileing up with digests that I haven't had time to read, for all of the clutter. I have come to enjoy not only the Jewel content, but a lot of the friendly conversaiton on unrelated topics. Still I wish that there was a little less of it, so that i might be able to enjoy the more interesting topics. While I agree that there is no perfect solution, I believe that there are a number of steps that we can take to eliminate a lot of the clutter from OUR OWN MESSAGES. First and foremost, if it's a chain letter or a marketing pitch, it *obviously* doesn't belong here. While this is a given for most of us, they still seem to appear. Getting rid of them would be an easy step to start with. Before posting, we should simply ask ourselves if it has anything to do with Jewel, and if it doesen't, then if it will be of interest to the other 1000 EDA's. There are many potential examples that would have failed both tests and probably should have been omitted. Finally, it might help if we held off on a reply just a lil bit to see what other responses there have been, before asking or answering the same question for a 3rd, 4th, or 5th time. If we started with these painless guidelines, then more of the busy angels might be able to keep up with the more interesting topics without having to delete days worth of messages unread. It is the unrelated material that makes the list so wonderful, so it would defeat the purpose to try and impose strict guidelines on what to say. Me must instead each be just a tad more considerate of the group and censor ourselves. Said my peace. Here's hoping... I was in Grand Rapids MI for business, and when I got to the hotel, I switched on the TV and started flipping channels. Well, as I pass CNN, I see they're doing the Top 10 Songs of the Week, and who should be at number 3 but the Heavenly Angel herself, and to top it off, they show a clip of the video that goes with the upbeat, rockin' version of YWMFM (which is my personal favorite version). The video clip was a closeup of her face, sort of washed out in brown. Is this the Sean Penn version? Then, I couldn't sleep later that night (I dislike strange rooms), so I was up reading until three, when I went to set the clock radio. As I turn it on to adjust the volume, I hear the familiar chords of YWMFM (the same upbeat, rockin' version) start up. i thought, "Cool." Okay, so maybe technically these events occured on two different days. I still say it shows how pervasive she's becoming. :-) Oh, one more thing. On the flight up, there was this guy across the aisle who I met, who was a Christian music industry executive (being as I'm in Nashville, it's not as strange as it may sound to some of you). After we talked and went back to our own respective worlds, I half-noticed him opening up a new CD. I didn't really notice until I saw him open up the liner notes for PoY. I was about to tell him how much I enjoyed the music, when I realized that while her message might fit into the Christian music industry, her wording might, at times, not, so I left that one alone. A little while after we entered the room a guy by the nickname of fish 9829 (not our fish) and proceeded to say that he was depressed. We, in turn, asked him what was the matter. It seems he had 4 friends killed in a car accident. My God - what sorrow and pain he must be feeling. Then, he proceeds to tell us how his girlfriend died 2 years ago. Another car accident (This poor guy). He proceeds by telling us that he only has 2 living family members and all his friends are now gone. Then, he tells us he's thinking it would be better if he just died too. No, we say, it would not. He proceeds to talk about how this would end the pain and how awful it is to live right now. Unfortunately, jerks kept coming in making lewd comments about Jewel, so finally someone suggested we go to a private room, which we did. We spent time talking to him about how things would get better for him and that we all cared about him and could not see him just end his life so abruptly. He kept asking us why we cared. I told him he was a precious soul. Others said similar things. I asked him if he thought he might want to join our wonderful list - then he might feel he belonged somewhere - we are so much a family. Unfortunately, at this point it was only the two of us and I had to go get my daughter off to school. I made him promise to e-mail me and let me know if he was ok or if he needed anything. I thought about this the entire time I got my daughter ready and signed back on immediately after she left. Fish was no longer on-line and had not yet e-mailed. Courtney had also returned on-line and we again went to room #Jewel. About 10 minutes later fish h9829 returns and lets us know he's a little better. He said he went to a shrink. I told him I was glad. Someone asked if it helped. He said a little, "he gave me a reason not to kill myself". Someone asked what it was. He said he told him about us! - We were the reason! He was so amazed that strangers could care so much about him that he felt that maybe, just maybe, things would get better. I continue to think about the events that transpired today. It was as if fate meant for him to find us. What if I had ignored Courtney's IM - or we had not decided to open this member room - or even if he had not come on-line. I feel the angels were with this one today. His faith in humanity was restored - at least to some extent - by the simple act of a few Everyday Angels reaching out to a straying soul. The other two people may not be EDA's as in this list, but they are truly Everyday Angels!!!!! (BTW - I'm making a tape for Courtney, who will be attending the 3/9 concert in philly (?) she hasn't a computer at home so can't join the list - I think she's shown herself deserving of a tape - I'm not even having her send me a blank!!!) Thanks to all who read this entire post!!!!!!! Love, tlc (Tammy) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 1997 15:49:49 -0600 (CST) From: Emilia Garvey Subject: Re: Jewel Sightings! Subject: Cindy Lee Berryhill; plus some EDAC and JC A half hour ago, I was composing this letter in my head as I was driving to McCabes Guitar shop in Santa Monica; it was to have been an "NJC" post. Well, things happen. The reason I went to McCabes is that today is the first day tickets went on sale for Cindy Lee Berryhill's performance there on Friday, March 7, at 8:00 p.m., her first show on her upcoming national tour. (Cindy promised to post me the other dates, as they are available, and I'll post them when I get them.) Cindy is an astounding "troubador" in a class of her own. All EDAs should make every effort to see and hear her. McCabes is a guitar shop on 31st and Pico in Santa Monica. In the back of the store, they have a 99-seat performance space, with a high stage; all the seats are great (it's first come for seats; no reserved seating). It's my favorite performance space in the LA area; I've recently seen there the likes of Joni Mitchell, Eric Andersen, Peter Himmelman (Dylan's son-in-law), and Jefferson Starship -- Acoustic, among others. The tickets are $12.50 each (cheaper than parking Downtown), and, yes, they can be ordered by telephone: (310)828-4497. Afterwards, I will be having a coffee-and-herbaltea(?) mini-gathering at my place (2 miles away), to watch Jewel on Leno. Please let me know if you are coming; all are invited. (I expect to get tickets for the taping of that show earlier that day). So, as I walked into McCabes, the first thing I see and hear is a guy buying guitar strings and talking to the cashier person, saying the words "her last name is Kilcher; she just goes by the name Jewel." I immediately popped up and said that I was a huge Jewel fan. He then told me that he made two of her guitars: Big Blue (which he described in detail), and the guitar she used on the current YWMFM video! He introduced himself as Danny Ferrington. (!!!). I said, "T-H-E Danny Ferrington? I KNOW who YOU are." Danny has made guitars for all of the recent legends; there's a great book out with the history of his handiwork; it comes with a CD of songs played on his guitars, including cuts from Elvis Costello, Ry Cooder, Richard Thompson (check HIM out, too, but not his commercial releases),Neil Finn, Phoebe Snow, and many others. I told him that I have the book, and I told him about the list. Alas, he is not "ON LINE," but he did say that he thinks Jewel is great, and he told me that he's a big Jewel fan himself!! Well, that's my story for today, kiddees. tty'all later, - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 1997 17:03:01 -0500 (EST) From: VCavallo@aol.com Subject: NJC: Jewel Chat Sounds (.wavs) .... It had Jewel looking far more relaxed & natural than that recent VH1 "Woman First" hosting. Also, I'm sure some will enjoy it just to spend some time in Steve Poltz's apartment, which is where all the Jewel "hosting segments were filmed last week. If nothing else, watch the closing sequence where Steve joins Jewel. :-) It's on again at 8:00 PM tommorrow (Saturday) night.
