WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 26 E! Channel 6:00pm to 8:00pm - Grammy Pre Show: includes interviews with nominees, winners and other celebrities. Julie Brown hosts. I stop in to Musicland to check to see if my Wizard of Oz is in yet. But the manager I need to talk to isn't there. As I participate in some idle chatter with one of the Clerks, I mentally smack myself in the forehead. Behind the counter is a poster of Ms. Kilcher! Its one of the promo shots, about three or four feet high. Gasping in awe I turn on the clueless clerk. In the calm tone often attributed to serial killers I say "I *have* to have that poster, you throw them out when you are done with them right?" The employee begining to see something amiss and probably fearing for his own safter says "sure we throw them out in like two weeks, but Selena (NO RELATION) already said she wanted it." Selena is an employee of Musicland slightly higher in the chain of command than the clerk I was speaking to. Staring like a child at a new toy I back out of the store vowing to return and claim what is *rightfully* mine. Attemping a subtle ruse I call the store and pretend to be the manager. Covering the phone with my hand "This is Jim uhh that Jewel poster you can throw it out now. Uhhh just put outside the back door and I will throw it away in the morning. Just make sure you you don't crumple it up..." Selena had answered "I know who this is...." ::Click:: I put the word out to fellow mall employees to let Ms. Selena know that I *want* that damn poster! Returning an hour later I find Ms. Selena back from her lunch break. Before I can utter a question, threat, or begin to cry she declares "I know why you're here!" Deciding that all my planning was for nought I throw myself on to the counter and pathetically wail "Please I really *need* that poster!" "No," she tosses back "I claimed it already." Switching gears and trying to regain my composure I maintain an even tone "but you don't even like Jewel." As the conversation gets heated and I grit my teeth I am gaining no ground. Circling each other like boxers we each attempt to win the other over. I refuse to leave with out the poster, she refuses to budge. I am forced to accept cruel comments. Like what you ask? Jewel sounds like Kermit the frog. Resisting the urge to strangel the girl and attempting to remain pleasant so Selena can't gain any more satisfaaction, she shows the first chink in her armor. Clutching for a way to claim this poster I say "I love Jewel, I am a huge fan, I know everything about her." Ok maybe that last statement was not entireley true but necesity is the mother of invention. "Like what, what do you know about her?" BINGO! Staring with a monologue of her growing up in Homer, especially throwing in the 3000 person town, and the 800 acres. I quickly find myself explaing the San Deigo/Living in the Van bit. Now everything I said might not have been accurate but damn if it didn't sound good. Quickly Selena starts rapid firing some questions. I parry them with answer after answer! Jewelstock The trip to Mexico The whole fragile flame thing Angels Yodeling can save your life What Pieces of You really means Jewels eye color Swearing After explaining why are hands manifest thought I get a purely *odd* look from Ms. Selena and the other employee that has come to watch this spectacle. "Geez you know all that?" I try to stop my mouth from overiding my brain and making a smart comment, and exasperated say "Of course." Hear I am crossing my fingers....Still with this *odd* look she says "It depends how well you treat me until its time to take it down, you know I like bagels on Sunday morning......could you get me bagels.....oh yeah and plain cream cheese" So beaten, exploited, and forced into indentured servitute I was promised a poster of Ms. Jewel Kilcher. This is how it happened: you all know about the Yankton Mall incident (uhh... what?) when I went into On Cue and asked for the Jewel poster but the guys said it was already called for. Well anyway, I went to the On Cue in Vermillion, which is a much bigger store, today. As my dad parked his car, I peered through the windows.. and low and behold, there it was... A true Gem (hehe) of a Jewel poster. We went in and the first thing that happened was the guy behind the counter said something like, "Are you guys related to Martin Schmutterer?" (he's my uncle) My dad was like, "Yes, he's my brother in law" and the guy said "Well he's a cool man!" So they were talking and everythign, and the guys working there were SO friendly!! I looked around, b/c i thought it would be kind of rude to just walk in and demand the poster. I looked at some CDs and Computer games.. then I went up to the counter and said: "I have a question." the guy there said : "We have answers!" I said : "I heard somewhere that all you do with those promotional posters is..." he interrupted : "we just throw them away!" I said : " I was wondering if maybe I could.." he interrupted : "You want the Jewel one?" It was so funny, the 2 guys working there were like arguing-- "I'll take her name and number!" "No I will!" "Lets give it to her now!" "No just take her name!" So finally they got a peace of paper and i gave them my name and phone no. that RULED! They were SOOOOO friendly!!
