I just arrived at Union Station in LA. As I walked down the long tunnel I could see a silhouette of a man standing at the center of the hallway. It was Larry waiting to pick me up. He gave me what turns out to be the first of the many official EDA hugs. What is a EDA hug? You'll know it when it happens. It's not how it's done but how it makes you feel. What a sight we must have been, standing there hugging and kissing each others neck. At least I was clean shaven. We first went to his house. He lives in a great part of town. His street is filled with giant aging Canary Date Palms and over 100 ft Mexican Fan Palms. As you look around his house, it is very telling of the occupant. This is a well read man. All his books are divided into different areas of the house by category. Everywhere you looked were telltale signs of a man with an incredible taste in music. His sound system was high quality. He started immedietly to play some of the tapes he was going to suprise everyone with at LizStock. Not only was he going to suprise them but he had already made tons of tapes to share. That was not all he was bringing. He had LizStock '97 ballons made up to give out to everyone there. He had more suprises. The EDA banner he debuted at Java Joes was now duplicated as posters. He spent over $1800 on this suprise. Regarless of being in a good neighborhood, LA is still a dangerous place. For that reason, I inspected his house to see how good his security was. He is well alarmed. No way I'm getting back in to get a hold of those rare Jewel photos. We were both very hungry so off we went to find a great restuarant at 11:00. Everyone had the same line when we appeared, "Just closed." The only place we could find was a steak house open 24hrs. Breakfast steak and eggs with a glass of wine was $60. Vanessa picked us up in the morning to take us to the airport. Larry had upgraded us to first class. We were flying on American Airlines with a strike threat hanging over us. Larry kept setting off the metal detector. It was his steel toed boots. Goodbye LA and first stop Chicago. Mike Connell, as you work on the FAQ's for the list, you should add one thing. To be a true EDA, it should be a requirment that the person meets Larry. He is the definition of an EDA. And I long to hear your voice again and to see your eyes intensely showing your soul as if an offering as if a gift to me like two pieces of coal burning inside you to bring warmth on a subzero cold winter night. And all I know is that I don't want to scream your name. I want to whisper it in your ear as my lips, proclaiming your glory, become an extension of you as if my lips, proclaiming your glory, become a channel for our souls to merge the way they have in my dreams. the way they would in paradise. So, I wonder if the sky exists in your eyes if the ocean waves exist in your voice if the oceans stars heaven are the stories of your eyes if your arms of warmth the story of your voice. I was speaking on the phone last night with Elizabeth Hummel, a friend of Jewel and Steve, and an astounding musician in her own right (she recently opened for Shawn Colvin in her San Diego show, and she wrote "The Goodwill Store," a song inspired by Jewel and Steve, on which Steve sings backing vocals). Elizabeth told me that Jewel has just recorded a pre-Grammy television program. She didn't know any of the details. Does anyone here know what this is? For San Diego-area angels, Elizabeth will be performing at Java Joe's on Sunday night (2/23), and again on March 15. (I plan on attending the March 15 show). When I was ready to pay, I look at the wall behind the register and see a poster of Jewel. On the left side of the poster it said Jewel and under that it had Pieces of You. If you want to see what the picture of the poster looks like it is at http://buda.goodnet.com/jewel/images/JEWEL_TREE.GIF I asked if they sell it. They said,"No".I asked if I could have it since I heard from someone on the list saying that they throw the poster away after anyway. The guy said sure but let me ask my manager if anyone has their name on it. The guy comes back and says that someone already wants it. I was disappointed. Then I tried to give them money for it like someone on the list did but they wouldn't go for it. I stopped at twenty-five bucks. I then went to another Sam Goody and tried the same thing but the manager guy was like "We don't give those away because we have to give it back to the record company because they are the ones that paid for it and blah...blah...blah." It kinda sucked but at least I finally got my POY songbook.
