I loved the poem, but I couldn't shake the thought of my story!! So i decided that I would never be able to enjoy the poem completely until i posted my goldfish story. Remember, I warned you beforehand so don't flame me about this!!! And also keep in mind, i'm delerious and very sick *hack hack* THE GOLDFISH STORY: (it's called Fewnie's Lament) (for my lover in a past life) Vewnie saw the pale and fleshy face every day. And every day he would request a change of scenery, request a different menu. But the man always ignored him. Somehow, Vewnie had expected this kind of reaction. After all, his addressee was only human. Vewnie continued on his daily inspection of the territory. He knew it's familiar and homey curves as if it were his own home, which it was. Every nick in the glass bowl was brought to his attention, and every algea growing on the surface was carefully classified as friend or food. Vewnie knew his stuff, and a good thing too, for if he didn't know what he was doing there would be nothing to do at all. LIfe as a fish is often boring. But despite the monotonous regularity of his life, Vewnie liked it. He never felt fear, or shock, because everything was always the same. Until the day came when the man did not come, did not let his pink face dangle over the ecosphere in which Vewnie spent his days, nights, and weekends. Until the day his man came home with an OTHER one. It parled francais, and was a vegetarian, although the man was never quite sure exactly what kind of vegetarian. "Voulez-vous danser?" "J'adore danser!!!!!" "Est-ce que vouz allez danser avec moi?" "Oh, mais oui." The third voice was unfamiliar, high pitched, and held a horrible tone. There was some danger forboded in those words, those horrible words. Vewnie watched, horrified, as the man--HIS man--turned on the black machine that made sound and turned to the OTHER one, taking it by it's hand and causing it to move in strange ways. The night progressed, and Vewnie became more and more hungry. At last, he could stand it no more. "J'ai faim!!!!!" He cried in despiration. "Did you hear something?" the music stopped. "No darling, no, of course not. Come to bed now. Tu fais amour avec moi." The man shook his head. "Wait." "No, NOW!" The OTHER one led Vewnie's man into the dark room, and the door slammed shut. As suspicious sounds began to emit from behind the door, Vewnie collapsed to the top of the bowl. His fragile life was over... blown out, like a candle. The next morning, Frank woke up.. alone. He flew out of bed and ran immediately to the fish bowl, where he saw his precious gold fish, Sandy, floating on the top of the bowl. Next to it was a note from Sharron. "Frank, you were good, but not good enough. I was only lacto-ovo. I am no vegan, Frank. I have no love for slimy creatures. Au revoir. best wishes, Sharron. ps: Je ne parle pas francais. ps2: Je dormie avec ton frere." I'm not all that nuts about using Yahoo as a host, simply because their network is so packed with requests. However, the software to implement those things is commonly available. I can probably set one up on one of my servers without much trouble and have CPU, memory and bandwidth to spare. Also, I can see about making it secure (no non-EDAs, make it invitation-only, etc), maybe putting in a interface to the mailing list archive on Jeff's system, and stuff like that. I'm a certainly for developing a chat solution that can bring us ALL together, even though the AOL version is popular simply because there's a good many of us there. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 19:00:51 -0600 From: "Enigmatic Paradox" Subject: Re: All By Myself > THERE IS HOPE!!! Please Read Hey everyone, Well, it's time to launch this thing. After pouring over input from 20 to 25 fellow list members, and the blessing of list owner, the web version of the "Jewel Mailing List Netiquette and New Member Guide" is now up and running. It (and the soon to be posted text version) is the first of four stages of a project intended to replace the present "Welcome to Jewel" file that comes to each new subscriber. It is hoped that every member (new and veteran) either check out this page and/or the text version when it is revealed. The URL (Uniform Resource Locator....Web address) is: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup There is helpful information here for anyone who has joined any of the three versions of this list in the last few months. It is here to get you up to speed with the basics of the list quickly, so that you can "fit in" sooner, make friends quicker and have the fun many of us enjoy with this list. (including EDA gatherings!!!!) There is also alot of helful information for the most seasoned of list veterans. Included on this page is: 1) Jewel Mailing List Do's and Don'ts 2) common Jewel Mailing List acronyms 3) Names And Things You Should Know (a Who's Who and a What's What) 4) Explanations of the three versions of the list and how to subscribe to them 5) Majordomo School - the software that actually manages this list can be used to EASILY obtain alot of information, such as: a] find a list members Email address (instead of posting to the list for it) b] getting a complete listing of EVERYONE on any or all versions of the list c] getting a listing of all AOL list members....list members who go to a certain university....list members in Canada etc (based on similarities in Email addy) d] obtain back issues of Jewel-Digest (1997 only) e] obtain the majordomo help file f] obtain a new copy of "Welcome To Jewel" (and when all four new ones are available you will be able to obtain the text version of the "Jewel Mailing List Netiquette and New Member Guide", the new "Jewel FAQ", the new "Jewel History" and the new "Jewel Discography") g] a few links to other informational Jewel pages and some EDA group photos (I want more group photos!!! If this is the same "All By Myself" song originally done by Eric Carmen that Celine Dion recently remade, I think the odds are near zero. Celine's version is already getting airplay, and will saturate the market long before Jewel's camp considers about a release.
