So we went in and I said to the guy there, "I read somewhere (on this list! but i didn't tell him that!) that all you do with those posters is throw them away or give them to employees." he looked at me suspiciously and said "where did you hear that?" I said, "from a person who works at a music store." and he was like, "oh. " so i said, "Can I have that Jewel poster?" but he said "I'm sorry, but that one is already claimed." Pardon me for asking, but, are you Polish? I am. In Response: The only big chance I had to see Jewel before was last summer, at the Molson Park in Barrie. A friend of mine had an extra ticket to see Jewel open for Neil Young, along with the Gin Blossoms?, and Oasis. Unfourtenetly, I had to work that day and could not get rid of the shift. I try not to remember that moment, it is much too painful, to miss the opportunity to see Jewel at an outdoor venue in the mid of summer. To answer your second question, I am Polish, born and raised. I'm listening to some new trades (thanks, Dan and Larry) even as I write. This was such an amazing weekend, it is going to rival JewelStock in many ways. More actual Jewel music, believe it or not, and even more camaraderie. I get a bit maudlin when I think back on the events that transpired, even though LizStock only ended a few hours ago. From the beginning: Mike Garnett (fledgling angel from Peoria, IL) Emailed me a few weeks ago, interested in riding with me to Liz's place for the party. He was a trifle concerned about a weekend with 30 people he'd never met, and uncertain about spending 8 hours in a car alone with a person known on the Jewel list as Slut Monkey. I allayed his fears, and we planned to leave Indy about 4 PM on Friday, running a small errand on the way and hitting Toledo about 10 PM. I was a bit concerned, because I hoped to stop along the way and pick up my new DAT machine in Ft. Wayne; this schedule left about an hour of slack to do that before the music store closed. Despite my nervousness, Mike arrived about ten minutes after 4 -- with the announcement that he had forgotten the time zone change and had to speed like crazy to make it here as early as he did. I can only hope he didn't endanger himself for such a relatively unimportant cause. We did make it in time to grab the DAT, had a small bite to eat, and continued on to Toledo. I talked too much, and Mike tried to stay awake after a night without sleep. We did arrive inside the city limits about 10, and found Liz's place without incident. Liz and Shelly greeted us at the door, ending a separation of 7 months made bearable only by frequent sharing on the mailing list. :-) But the fun was only beginning: we brought our baggage inside, moving on into the house to find the source of the laughter and chatter. In the kitchen stood a few EDAs, looking expectantly at us. I knew the cheerful bearded gent had to be Larry G -- he had privately told me he'd be there to surprise Liz, and I was heppy to meet him in person at last. But who was the big bear-like figure standing there with a glass in his hand and crinkly lines at the corner of his eyes from smiling too much? That nose; that deep, booming laugh; who else could it be but -- IGOR! I was so stunned that I almost failed to react to his presence. Seems like Larry had the last laugh on us after all. Still in shock, I greeted him and moved on to speak briefly with Crunch, Tim and John, who sat in the TV room viewing (what else?) Jewel content on the tube. Fish showed up, bringing along the Fish family of course, and the night's surprises were essentially over. We socialized till the wee hours, getting caught up on gossip and marveling that big gruff Igor and smiling sarcastic Larry were getting on famously, teasing each other and the rest of us. Liz was very upbeat, and she and Shelly graciously offered us drinks and snacks while we all chatted. I gave Liz her Valentine's and birthday presents, which she happily accepted; I knew by then that this was indeed going to be a fun weekend. We looked over their lovely house, which included an enclosed sun porch and lots of space to stretch out. Liz's room is simply delightful -- pictures taped to every flat surface, souvenirs and awards standing and hanging from hooks, much of it totally unrelated to Jewel! It was a compelling statement of youth and poise. Larry G passed out LizStock balloons -- the man is full of happy surprises! We were running short of sleep by then, so I begged Liz for a reasonably quiet place to fall over -- or else a convenient street lamp so that my snoring wouldn't wake the household. To my shock, she suggested that I take her room while she draped herself over a chair or couch in the TV room. I recoiled in horror from the very idea; making your host sleep on the couch is a no-no. A word of advice: never argue with Liz! She had her way, and I spent a very restful night in darkness and quiet; Liz, you're truly an angel. I woke the next morning and after dressing, wandered into the front room in search of the party. Snow drifted lazily down outside; the entry room was strangely quiet, but a lone figure sat at the table perusing Liz's printout of the previous day's list postings. Apparently Pat (tilted halo) Brown had materialized out of the ether in the middle of the night, and I greeted him for the first time in person. I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye, and turned around to see a petite redhead rise from a mound of blankets. "Hi; I'm Duff," she muttered, and sleepily sank beneath the covers again. I wanted to shout "DUFF!" but in deference to her state of mind I merely murmured "Hi, Duff", and smiled as she disappeared. 17 hours of driving, just to hang out with 30 other EDAs and then return? Oh, Duff. (I was going to say "Mmmmm... Duff." but it's a lame joke, ne c'est pas?) We all gathered for brunch a bit later, with Liz and Shelly directing us to "Ideal Hot Dog"; a good place for Jewel and the Rugburns to eat when they visit Toledo... It snowed again, adding to the dusting we received overnight. We had a nice chat, and I declared it inappropriate for Liz and Shelly to pay for their meals; the motion was seconded by John, who picked up the tab. I paid him back for my portion later... I assume the others settled eventually. :-) We then returned to the house to await the party van. Larry G played some of his fabulous concert tapes, including some terrific Rugburns stuff, while tape recorders whirred. The party van continued to call via cellular phone to monitor their progress; Liz's parents, two very cool people, dropped by with food for us - -- then hung out for a bit and slipped away before we even got used to their presence. Many tape recorders whirred away in the TV room while we watched, surfed the net on Liz's computer and renewed our acquaintances. At last, the party van rolled in, followed a few minutes later by Gerrit and his contingent. We welcomed Crash Boy, Lauren, Mia, Rachel, Rich, Barry, Selena, Misty, Tegan, oh... everyone! Many many hugs and some tears. Everyone freaked when they realized Igor was present, especially when they recovered from the initial shock and wondered why he was dressed for San Diego weather in shorts and Hawaiian shirt. Afternoon lunch/dinner time, thanks to the family and their thoughtful contribution... more video/audio entertainment, lots of joking and hassling, much useful information exchanged and stories told. Larry G volunteered back rubs (Duff at least took him up on his offer) and many beers were consumed. More net surfing, more schmoozing. Typical EDA entertainments abounded. Dan Stark arrived, to little fanfare but bearing many many gifts and tapes. You da man, Dan! I coaxed Duff into accepting another back rub later on, as she seemed to be having trouble resting after her marathon drive. Rachel kept the mood light with her wacky sense of humor (even though she accused me of having a cold butt); Liz and Shelly were everywhere, tidying up and talking to everyone. Larry G popped up with a package of COOL posters bearing the angel/guitar image, and we all busied ourselves for a while signing each other's posters as souvenirs of the weekend. They have some great plans for the extra posters at future Jewel concerts. Finally it was time for Liz's broomball game. I could write an entire post on this particular event, but you're already bored. :-) Suffice to say that we transported everyone in the party van and an additional car, commandeered a cheering section of the bleachers and embarrassed the living daylights out of Liz and Shelly every time they moved. I'm surprised we didn't get kicked out of the arena for all the noise we made. Liz's team lost both games, but a good time was had by most. On the way back, I perched on the seat armrests between Larry and Rachel/Duff in the party van, but to my dismay felt myself sinking between the seats as the van lurched and twisted. There was barely room enough for my rib cage, and I was having slight difficulty breathing. This was not helped by Igor feeding me crackers and holding my butt off the floor (was it cold, Igor?) but I managed to keep from being inextricably wedged during the ride back to Liz's. I swear this is all true. We got back online with Liz's computer and Selena kept the online AOL chat area alive for a while. I kept wandering in and out of the room, but there was always someone on line until I went to bed about 3:30. We watched yet more Jewel video, copied more tapes. I kept my arms in shape by administering back rubs to Rachel and Liz; snacked on occasional passes through the kitchen; talked to everyone who would listen; and finally decided to go sleep in the front room before I fell down in front of someone. Here I made a tactical mistake: after cleaning up and putting on my knee-length night shirt, I wandered into Liz's room to see what the online chat was up to. Crunch and Shelly started shrieking that I was naked (well, those legs are kind of frightening), and Igor begged for a camera to document the event. Crash Boy did snap a rather incriminating picture, though what he found so interesting about my big baggy T-shirt I'll never know for sure. Larry G ran for his camera, and I was forced to put my jeans back on to prevent a riot. You will notice that only the men were excited enough to take pictures... I finally sagged into unconsciousness about 4 AM, to the strains of "My Own Private God's Gift To Women" and a few other Jewel tunes, loud and off key from the TV room. I gather that this live performance of the EDA Chorus was in fact recorded for posterity. The next sounds that reached my ears were those of Selena rousing everyone for the trip home; the EDA party van was scheduled to depart at 9 AM. It was snowing again! We gathered for one last group picture, then suddenly everyone was packed up and leaving. Hugs for everyone: Bye, Rachel ("I don't wanna leave!" she sobbed). Take care, Duff (I was a bit teary-eyed). Miss ya, Selena (boy is she strong!). It all blurs together... Then Dan took off for the Great White North, and suddenly it was down to a handful of EDAs. I carefully put my packages and souvenirs in the car, and Igor helped me scrape some of the snow off as the engine warmed up. We bade farewells to the last few holding down the fort, hugged Liz goodbye, and set off for home. The 4-hour trip evaporated in minutes as Mike and I dwelled on pleasant memories. I felt a pang of sympathy for those with long drives ahead; we passed out of the snow soon after leaving Toledo, while continuous precipitation was predicted for Pennsylvania and points south and east. Poor Duff is still driving even as I write this; hang in there, angel! Talk to me about pictures, people -- I want a copy of everything I'm in. Negatives if possible. :-) Seriously, let me know what I can do for you in return; I'm making tapes like a wild man already, a few more won't hurt! I'm a bit more upbeat this evening than I was after the 14-hour return trip from JewelStock. I guess the fact that it did happen again, without even the requirement of Jewel's presence, means we're on to something. I'm still a bit maudlin about it, but it's a happy thing too. I love you all, and I can't wait to do this again. Thanks a million to Liz and Shelly and their family, who undertook this wearying task for so little reward; also the rugged EDAs who drove brain-deadening distances for a brief reunion.
