While I was waiting for them to get developed, I went over to the electronics department looking for replacement heads for my razor, when I started hearing YWMFM. I look up, and they were showing the video on TV, but it wasn't just on one, it was on something like 20 TV's at the same time. Needless to say, being as it was the first time I got to see the video (I don't have cable), I was quite happy. Then I find out that it wasn't "closed circuit" t.v. but actual cable (since it was VH1 that was showing it). Then I realized that Wal-Mart has cable, and I don't. What a let down. Now that I got my little story out of the way, I have two extra tickets to see Jewel @ 9:30 club on March 10. I'll sell them at cost, which means you out of towners and phone charge people can save a few bucks on the credit card surcharge. Also, they haven't annoucned the second date yet and I'm starting to get the feeling that the second night might be a "private" show. Finally, does anyone have any European tour dates yet? Anand ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 14:13:16 -0500 (EST) From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: Beacon 3/2 gathering at The Mad Fish OK, Here is the scoop on The Mad Fish. It is casual dining, menu is mostly fish and seafood (obviously), but I would think they'd have a few non-seafood options available, and entrees range from $13 - $19, which I thought was pretty good for NYC. They open at 5:00 and we figured we'd meet at about that time so we have plenty of time for dinner and 'jewek-talk' etc... Then we can walk to the venue from there and meet any EDA's that don't come to the restaurant (say around 7:00 at the bar inside if the venue is open -- anybody know what time the venue opens. I only get a recording whenever I call the venue). The restaurant is located at 2184 Broadway (between 77th and 78th - closer to 77th) and the venue is at 2124 Broadway (between 74th and 75th - closer to 74th). So, it's only about 3 blocks apart. Please e-mail me ASAP and let me know if you are going to meet us at The Mad Fish and tell me if anyone else is coming with you so I can make reservations (they suggested making them within the week). If we have over 13 people we will have to be at two tables. Rob, Eric, and I are planning to take the train into the city from Metuchen to Penn Station, so if there are any other central New Jersey EDA's going that would like to ride in with us, let me know. Can't wait to meet more of the EDA's. tlc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 97 19:15:15 UT From: "CASEY HANSEN" Subject: MOPGGTW I don't know if we spoke of this subject before, but why does Jewel steal the lines "And Your So Vein, you probably think this song is about you" from Joney Mitchell? It doesn't have to be done on the mailing list software side! If you have a smart mail program, like Eudora, you can set up a subject filter... you can then sort your incoming mail into two mailboxes, based on subject. If to=jewel@smoe.org and subject contains NJC move to Non Jewel Content mailbox If to=jewel@smoe.org move to Jewel Content mailbox You can effectively create your own digests with few clicks of the mouse (in Eudora, go to the Tools menu and to Filters.) Of course, this assumes you have a filtering mail program. If you don't, you most likely can sort your messages in the Jewel mailbox by subject, which would lump all the NJC messages together. ...and this relies on the fact that people actually *use* the NJC subject disclaimer for Non-Jewel content. Geneseo is at exit 8 (someone please confirm this) on I-390, but it is marked Geneseo. The concert will be at the SUNY University there. It is about 30 miles south of Rochester, or 20 Miles South of the NY Thruway. Follow the signs to the school. I am not exactly sure where the hall is (I don't know them by name), but if people want more detail on how to get there, drop me a note, and I will try to be more specific. I live (or rather my parents live) in Avon, which is the town to the north of Geneseo. It's been a little while since I was down there, but I am going to Avon this weekend, so I will take the extra 5 minutes and shoot over to Geneseo to plan out the route. For those of you with WWW access, you can get driving directions from www.mapblast.com. Just plug in College Dr. Geneseo, NY and map it out. If you look at the top of the page you can even tell it to give you the specific driving directions from your house. Also, the school has a web address too: www.geneseo.edu. They don't have any mention of the concert yet. They should have a campus map somewhere. For those of you familiar with Geneseo, I will probably be at the IdleWhile before the show. That is if I can get tickets. :) RK ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 22:14:09 +0100 From: Alexander Stamou Subject: Re: NJC:Re: Please read this... The House and Senate issued a citation Thursday congratulating Jewel, who grew up in Homer, for winning the Best New Rock-Pop Artist award at the American Music Awards last month. She also has been nominated for two Grammys. ``Her unique style, from folk to a jazzy new age, her powerful haunting delivery, and her soul-baring lyrics have earned her favorable reviews from coast to coast,'' the citation said. The 22-year-old Jewel drew criticism last summer when she canceled her appearance at the fair to tour with Neil Young. I got this from the Rochester paper, which had a little article on the show (by little, I mean LITTLE). The Show is at 8pm at Kuhl Hall. The Rugburns are opening up for Ms. Kilcher. Tickets go on sale on Saturday (no time given, but someone said 10:30). They are $12 for student, and only $15 for the rest of us! To get tickets call the MacVittie Union at 800-525-2070, or locally (716)245-5873. Hope to see you there! Horray, after missing Jewelstock by 1 week (don't ask), I can finally see her with booking a flight! Can't they > even release the debut single in style .... Don't feel like the UK is getting special treatment. I'm still trying to understand it. Atlantic does deserve some credit for not dropping Jewel as quickly as they do some artists (but only because the original sales estimates were so low... If they were expecting a platinum album she would have been dropped long before the album took off), but IMHO, they've done an absolutely horrid job with singles. They put out a couple of WONDERFUL promos for radio stations in support of the singles, but took forever to make the singles available to the public, and then at first in only cassingle format. To add even further insult to injury, they are woefully short on songs for such a prolific artist (could you imagine Atlantic ever even considering putting out a Tori single with only a single b-side?). They already had oodles of CD-ready material on the pair of promo-EPs that could have been put on the singles at next to zero cost. bob There, I feel much better now. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 18:00:28 -0500 From: 2fishnet <2fishnet@concentric.net> Subject: NJC HELP!!! Yes, it was easy to write, the words, but hard at the same time. See, I think the reason Brad and I drifted apart is because I realized I was gay too. This was several years ago, before Pieces of You was written, but the song could have been written right for that time. It's haunting. And the funny thing is, Brad, nor Shawn, nor anyone knows because I haven't told them. People put on masks all the time, and I guess some are just harder than others. It's scary when you want to take it off but can't. Somehow I know this letter will haunt me too... Eric, thanks for your admiration, everyone needs to feel admired. this isn't what I wanted, but maybe it was, Scott PS: Stephanie knows she's thanked too, right? =) PSS: It was interesting reading the follow-up digests too...
