Here are the songs that I think are the most emotive, beautiful, and heart-wrenching songs around. That I can think of right now, at least. 1) "Fast Car", Tracy Chapman (from _Tracy Chapman_): Everytime I heard this song, I get shivers. Tracy's throaty alto over a sparse arrangement of acoustic guitar and drums, this lyrically astounding piece is my favorite song of all time, if I had to pick. Telling a powerful story of growing up in the ghetto, it is amazing. [Honorable Mention: Tracy's "Behind the Wall" from the same album is an eloquent poem of social injustice that tugs at your soul.] 2) "The Freshmen", The Verve Pipe (from _Villains_): Currently growing on the national charts, I've known about this gem of a song for years, as The Verve Pipe is a local band here. In fact, I live in the area where the song occurred. Anyway, it's a real tear-jerker... amazingly powerful. 3) "Maybe an Angel", Heather Nova (from _Oyster_ and, even better, _Live from the Milky Way_): Heather's extraordinary voice carries this gorgeous song about love and loss to shear emotion. 4) "Me and a Gun", Tori Amos (from _Little Earthquakes_): Gut-wrenching pain. We really feel like we're there with Tori as this is being done to her. 5) "Luka", Suzanne Vega: Vega created a rare masterpiece with this subtlely powerful, unique, and very sad song about child abuse. 6) "Backstreet Cinderella", Mary Lou Lord (from _Martian Saints_): Mary Lou's voice is amazing, the best I've heard. And it's never been better than in this melancholy and beautiful cover. 7) "Nothing Compares 2 U", Sinead O'Connor (from _I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got"): Sinead, one of the five best artists to debut in the last fifteen years (shameless plug), has better songs, but she's never more emotive and sad than in this cover. Lovely. 8) "Imagine", John Lennon (from _The Collection_): One could argue that this song is more about hope than sadness, but I still get misty when I hear it. 9) "Untouchable Face", Ani DiFranco (from _Dilate_): Ani's best song, IMO. Her frustration and sadness over a relationship breakup (and her ex's success at bouncing so quickly) is uniquely personified in this song. 10) "Sandalwood", Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories (from _Tails_): Lisa's voice is beautiful in this unassuming folk song, one of the quietest and best songs on her rather impressive debut album. Honorable Mention: "Adrian", Jewel (from _Pieces of You_): A lovely song I'm sure you all know. - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 13:53:23 -0500 (EST) From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: Re: Saddest Songs I have to agree that Luka is one of those songs for me. She tried to leave a couple of times, but he would take me and say that she would have to leave me behind. It took her a little over 3 years to get away from him with me and my little sister. Does anyone know why she plays so few shows in the south? I know she played in Orlando and Gainseville last year, but my parents would not let me go. Now they feel so bad about it they said they'd take me to see her almost anywhere in the South, so now I can go but there are no shows down here. Sigh..... And what are the plans for before and after the show. And I'm also looking for a ride to LizStock if someone with a spare seat is passing through Mass. and don't mind a tagalong. Now for the AOL Riot: This is NOT a chainmail, or any other hoax. This is going to happen on Friday Feb. 14 1997, starting at 9:00 A.M. AOL does know about this and are taking it seriously. They are doing all they can do to stop it. But they don't have much control over it. These "hackers" are not real hackers, they are mostly programmers and other persons with programs that let you do dreadful things to people. They are doing this because they are mean and selfish, and their upset with AOL's failure to provide the needed services with all the money that they made from overcharging. They have access to the areas that only the employees have access to and rest of us don't even know about, this is how they learn all the secrets about AOL. They cannot go into your computer and mess it up without your phone number. And this is not possible to do on-line. You must both be off-line to do this. They can send you mail until your mailbox is full (big deal), send viruses attached to mail (note: reading the mail will not do any harm, but downloading files attached to mail will). And they can get you TOSsed, but they do this by having many of them (5-10) send complaints to AOL. And AOL will probably ignore these on the 14'th or they will take them all very seriously (who knows). So if you stay off-line you are perfectly safe, and if you go on-line don't download files attached to mail and stay out of private chat rooms (including Jewel rooms). If you do this than you shall be pretty safe from these people. And be careful, they can change thier screen names to anything they want (including names already used like yours or one of your friends). So make sure that your realy talking to who you think that you are. As I said before these people are not hackers. And all Hackers are against this Riot. Hacking is considered a recreational and educational sport. Hackers are people who penetrate computer systems to gain knowledge about the system and how it works. Most hackers are not interested in destroying computers, perpetrating massive frauds, modifying their personal banking, taxation and employee records. They just want to learn about how systems work. It's the process of 'getting in' that satisfies hackers curiosity not causing havoc or invading privacy. This is only on AOL, all other services are safe to use on the 14'th. until next time, Jesse And Remember "Beware of those angels with their wings glued on." -Billy Corgan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 18:14:39 -0500 (EST) From: Dollphini@aol.com Subject: SJC: POY at ice skating Hi peoples, I haven't posted for a while, so I figures, I'll tell ya'll about the highlight of my day. Once again, > *or something*. James dons his Biologist hat for a time (and regrets sounding like a bit of a dork): Recent research indicates that there _may_ be some genetic component to homosexuality. It is not presently well enough quantified that anyone could make an accurate description of the etiology of this phenomenon. It is _not_ a disease, it is not "genetic brain damage". At certain points in the development of living things, certain concentrations and gradients of hormones make changes to our phenotypic (and not genetic) nature. This could perhaps include a component of, or group of components of homosexuality. Certainly it can have an effect on outward phenotypic sexual appearance, i.e. you may be genetically male, but phenotypically female. Gross phenotypic difference like this can also be attributed to specific genetic malaises, but is not what this research is exploring nor are those particular malaises necessarily related to homosexuality. Human kind is also not the only species in which homosexuality occurs. This is a natural phenomenon, it is _normal_ to be gay. Where you probably have the most accuracy in your statement is with regard to 'fetishism', however, I would argue that by and large most people involved with the BDSM (Bondage & Dominance and Sadism & Masochism) are not true fetishists. That is they do not have a psychological need for the presence of the situation or clothing to achieve orgasm. Fetishism is actually a psychological condition where by a person developes, over time, the need or percieved need for the presence of a particular type of object or action in order to reach orgasm. This has not, to my knowledge, ever been associated with a genetic component. I'm not meaning this to come off as pedantic and high-handed as it sounds, but please don't drag science into this, it doesn't want to be there... ...really, I asked it. :-) It is normal to be gay; it is ok to be gay. Please don't use science to paint homosexuality in a bad light. Cuz it doesn't. Kind Regards, (& Happy St. Valentine's Day.)
