Well that's sort of a crazy concept, not much different than saying Metallica is no longer a rock act, but strictly a pop act because they became popular. The fact is, a folk album still contains the same music after it becomes popular as it did before anyone had heard of it. It sounds to me like the author of that definition considers his taste to be somehow above anything that is accepted by the mainstream, and wrote this as a means to qualify his narcissism. Anyway, the best 'label' I've heard attached to Jewel's music (if we must) is "Neo-folk". In other words, new or modern folk. Like "Modern Rock", it shares many of the same elements as its predecessor, but has its own, modern quality and generally appeals to a younger audience. The Liz "Party Hostess" Clark ranted: >Nooooooooo, she isn't a lesbian.....in fact she has a gorgeous boyfriend >named Michel, and she once dated my future husband, Steven J. Poltz. I hate to disagree, but I can't fight the fact that I do. The good news is that this is not a character debate, just a difference in opinions. On Wed, 12 Feb 1997 01:08:26 -0500 (EST) Gregory Willms writes: >guitar tips huh? well ive been playing for 10 years and have never had >one lesson... here are my tips... > >1) if you must take lessons, only stay in the class long enought to learn >the basic chords (and maybe how to read music if you cant already), and >then get the hell out. if you ever want to really learn how to play the >guitar and understand how the music works, you have to do it yourself. >its like doing math problems, you cant watch someone do them on a >chalkboard and expect to learn it, you have to do them yourself. Although normally I would be the first person to agree with this, I'm afraid I can't. What you learn in a classroom setting depends greatly on you and the teacher. You can definitely learn more than just chords and notes with classes. Music theory can be boring to some people, but I thrived on it and it makes me understand what I'm doing that much more. The more your in tune with the music you play the more you can enjoy it. IMHO! However this is not the point I disagree with Greg about. Although I think if you have a great guitar teacher out there you should get lessons, I am also under the train of though that lessons can severely damage your experience with the instrument. Like a lot of people if you are told to do something, and given specific instructions on how to do it, it can ruin it for you. The great thing about playing guitar is the exploration that you can do. Something that I believe would be better if done alone. So I suggest you get as many books and videos as you can as opposed to schooling if your worried about a teacher killing your desire. But don't completely rule the idea out. After all the best stuff you'll ever learn won't be from a book it will be from other people. >2) learn how to play other peoples music before trying to write your own. >if you just start out trying to make things up yourself, it will more than >likely suck. ive just recently started writing satisfactory music, and i >use the term "satisfactory" loosely. you'll be absolutely AMAZED at how >much you'll learn just by putting on a CD (preferably something simple at >first, like jewel, a perfect example), grabbing your guitar, and figuring >it out. This is the rule that made me want to reply to this letter publicly. I'm afraid I just can't agree here at all. The very first thing I did was make up my own stuff. This is what grabbed my creative juices and gave me the motivation to keep playing. Of course you run the risk of forming bad habits, but you also run the risk of forming a musical personality. Just because something you write right off the bat sucks, doesn't mean you shouldn't try. If you wrote something great your first time, you really wouldn't want to write anymore. Although I only have my own personal experience to comment on, I know that if I had only played other musicians music before I made up my own stuff, I wouldn't have nearly the same outlook on the guitar as I do know. A lot of people I grew up with that played the guitar played nothing *but* cover songs. They never even bothered to make up their own stuff. I couldn't figure it out. I mean, isn't that what playing the guitar is all about? Expressing yourself? I can only express others sentiments when I play cover songs. Granted it's a good idea to have knowledge about chord progressions and song layout to make up something sellable, but that's not why I play. And I hope that's not why a lot of people play. I play to enhance what ever moment I might be experiencing in life. I couldn't do that without practice and I'll never be able to do it perfectly. If I had never written that first song, the week I bought my first guitar it's very possible I wouldn't enjoy my music making hobby at all right now. Although, if all your looking for is fun, just play others people's stuff. There is nothing wrong with that, and you'll be a hit at parties. Sorry Greg, but I couldn't have lived with myself if I hadn't said something. I hope you won't take any of this personally. -Bruce bhartford3rd@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 1997 01:54:48 -0500 (EST) From: Horter3@aol.com Subject: Three questions In a message dated 97-02-11 08:49:24 EST, you write: > What three questions would you ask Jewel if you had the > chance to talk to her for half an hour? I know that we'd all like to sit together plus i live maybe 5 minutes away from a ticketmaster. (it's actually believe it or not in dominick's) or i might just go online and order them. I am currently buying 2 one for me & one for Bill so that leaves me w/ 8 open slots for those requests that mike can't fill. Mike email w/ how many you are buying and the other chicago goers who are going and aren't having mike buy you tickets and would like me to buy you them then please email me. Bjork is great, incidentally. I hear Telegram is good, esp. Hyper-Ballad (with the Brodksy Quartet.) >don't they sing "Shoebox of life?" or is that someone else i'm thining >of? Anyyway i've heard them before and they rule. There is a song on their last studio album (Born on a Pirate Ship) called Shoebox, which I assume is the one you're thinking of. They do rule, and have a new live album out, no new material, just milking their popularity after "The Old Apartment" turned out to be their biggest American single yet. - -todd ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 1997 09:36:40 PST From: frkarras1@juno.com (Todd A Werner) Subject: Re: NJC: emotive songs On Tue, 11 Feb 1997 23:47:47 -0600 (CST) "Tim Gavin, The only true paranormal of the Fu Sheng beaver." writes: >Just add "Nightswimming" by REM to my dusty little corner of that >list. For everybody out there who hasn't heard "Nightswimming" from R.E.M.s "Automatic for the People," what are you waiting for? Tim's right, what a fantastic song. A friend of mine was talking to me once, before we really knew each other, and I knew he loved R.E.M., so we were talking about the band. I said, "You know what their best song is?" His reply? "Nightswimming." I agree. Check it out. todd ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Dec 1995 21:49:25 -0600 From: "Ashe Mayfair" Subject: Re: NJC:Letters to Cleo fans I need your help > I am completely baffled I was reading the current issue of illinois > entertainer and Veruca Salt is on the cover w/ a big article about > them. (i'm not trying to insult or be rude by asking this Stacey is indeed a man. He recently quit LTC for reasons I havn't keept up with. It doesn't look like him in that new video (then again it might not be and it might not be him on the CD even, I just don't know). I have to admit that I had at first wonderd about this same thing at first. Mostly cus some of the pictures of Kay (the femal lead) on the CD insert didn't look (at least to me) like the same person. Oh well. I guess this guy gets a lot of that... just like me hehe :]. I swear I might just go nuts if one more person askes me "isn't Ashe a girls name". hehe. And within their pages is hidden a 30 second clip of YWMFM at 8 fps. in mono. There's also a .25 fps version which is a lot lot lot slower. I thought it was pretty damn cool. Poe, Hootie, and Duncan Sheik also have clips up there. High B/W works best obviously. I have posted a copy for all to read and be aware of. Subject: FCC Internet Access Charge Reform Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 17:00:00 -0600 From: FlashNet Communications Organization: FlashNet Communications Dear FlashNet customer, We are writing you this to inform you of a very important matter currently under review by the FCC. Your local telephone company has filed a proposal with the FCC to impose per minute charges for your internet service. They contend that your usage has or will hinder the operation of the telephone network. It is our belief that internet usage will diminish if users were require to pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an email box for your comments; responses must be received by February 13, 1997. Send your comments to isp@fcc.gov and tell them what you think. Alert everyone in your addressbook, and most importantly the subject line should have "CC Docket No 96-263". FULL NAME AND ADDRESS SHOULD ACCOMPANY THE EMAIL otherwise it will be deleted. Again, the email to FCC is isp@fcc.gov More information can be found at the FCC website: http://www.fcc.gov/isp.html Thanks for your time. ****************************************** M.
