Subject: NJC: desert Island & while we wait I resist compiling a list of CDs to take on a desert island, because I know that once I got there I'd only want any of my CDs but the ones I brought. So, I'll do my best to try to think of CDs that it would be most unlikely for that to happen to. *the discomforting sound of a brain being wracked* hmmmm... well, here's my best shot: (in no particular order) 1: Elvis Costello, "the Juliet Letters" I just love it. 2: Jewel: "POY" (because JS isn't a CD. *pout*) 3: Tori Amos: "Little Earthquakes" wait. I want to take "Under the Pink". no, I want "Boys for Pele". Oh no! I can't forget about Jeff Buckley! And... See. I'm not even done for three seconds and I'm already unsatisfied. I think, considering there weren't any stipulations on this, I'd take all kinds of musical instruments and an 8-track recorder, so I could eventually learn to play them all, perform, and record my favorite music, and then work on my own. I'd keep myself busy. So, yeah. While we wait... Jeff buckley. Is he EVER going to do another CD? His webpage says he's working on one, but he's been working on one for at least three years now. Oh well. It means it should be excellent. Elvis Costello has already been mentioned as well, but I'll second him too. He's incredibly prolific, incredibly talented, and incredibly varying. He's done country/folk, rock n' roll, ballad, synth, piano, and even classical string quartet music! (the Juliet Letters) Barenaked Ladies are a Canadian Band that went really big up there a few years back, but never really hit it off here. Great singing, great songwriting, and an overall wonderfully mellow sound. You can't help but sing along to them. I still sing songs from "Gordon", and I haven't heard it in about a year. Ohh, there are so many. I don't like recommending my Cd collection with others, because I always feel like I'm imposing or something. For instance, I picked up Frente!'s "Marvin the Album" about a month after it was released (I almost bought the Labour (sp? hah!) of love EP, but Marvin came out just in time) but I pretty much kept it to myself. A year and a half later, one of my friends listened to it and shared it with everyone. I told them that I'd hat it for that long, and I felt weird. That always seems to happen to me, jewel not exclusive. Oh well. I don't like dictating other people's tastes, so I'll just continue in my quiet little, but contented manner. tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 97 01:29:21 UT From: "CASEY HANSEN" Subject: Polls My Top Three (Other than Jewel) 1. I was lucky enough to be blessed with a deep, bass voice. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the world wasn't. Especially singers. Has anyone else noticed this? I love to sing along to stuff, but that means I either am in pain from singing too high for me, or I sing it in my comfortable range (usually an octave or two or three low) and sound funny. Oh well. First encounter with Jewel: I have the good fortune to be a San Diego native and the good sense to keep up with the trends in music. My friends (the people I choose to spend time with) are also avid music followers and we keep each other supplied with tapes of the music we find that we happen to like. A couple of years ago one of my friends and business associate (Tina) started telling me about this woman she was going to hear sing every Thursday night at a coffee house in Pacific Beach, I had a standing appointment every Thursday and couldn't make it. One day she called and said "Jewel will be at the Wikiup Cafe on Friday, can you make it?" The rest is history, I went. . .I haven't missed a concert of hers in San Diego since. At that Friday night concert of less than 100 people she (Jewel) gave out bootleg tapes kind of as an apology for the delay in her first cd. When I first got to the cafe I had to use the restroom, I'd never seen Jewel before but she was kind of hard to miss. . .standing at the sink with pink angel wings on talking to a friend (?) about having a wisdon tooth pulled. I think her next concert here was at the Hahn Theater (right after her cd came out), I managed to get a poster off the wall from there. I have bought at least 15 to 20 copies of her cd (always buy one when they're in the used cd department) and turned on at least that many people to her music, every person I've given the cd to has become an immediate avid fan! Even have neices aged 4 and 2 that know the words to every song and would much rather listen to Jewel than any of their childrens cds. Keep up the good work of expressing your admiration and devotion to a very deserving and talented musician. Subject: NPJC: painful song; Jewell, IA; and folk artists Painful song: definitely "me and a gun" by Tori. It's the root of the whole RAINN deal. I bawled when she sang it in concert, just like I bawl when I hear it at home. It's too powerful, it should have a warning label on it or something. Jewell, IA: seeing that I'm (presumably) the only Iowa EDA (speak up if you're out there), I'll have to check the place out. Although, I'm of the opinion that if it's in Iowa and I haven't heard of it, it can't be too spectacular. Then again, the unspectacular is usually really neat and comforting. I'll give it a look next time I'm in the area. Folk Artists: Now you're really opening up a can of worms here. First, you've got to define. (sligtly borrowed definitons from supposed music authorities) Folk artists are musicians that play intimate, usually simple, acoustic music (folk music defined loosely) but are folk themselves. Check out a sociology text for absolute definitions of folk/pop culture (I'd give you a direct quote, but I sold my books back already. sorry). I believe that when an artist becomes popular, they are pop artists, by that definition, just because they are POPULAR artists. But, they can still play folk music or whatnot. When classifying the music, Jewel definitely plays folk music. But, she is popular right now (that can change) so she's a Popular artist, folk musician. As folk artists go, I listen to folk programming on public radio. Greg Brown is one of the most widely acclaimed folk artists in the music biz (rolling stone), but in my opinion he's still a folk artist. Because, he's on a small label, doesn't get much air play, and plays in small venues. Like Iowa City (where he's lived most of his life, coincidentally :). Jewel, IMHO, has outgrown her folk boots, but maybe she'll put them back on again. Tracy Chapman did, and so do many others. Really, what I'm trying to say is that, regardless of music, artists aren't folk if they're popular. It all depends on society's view of them. Their music, however, is their own view. It's all a scale, it's definitely not black or white. Flame away. tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 20:25:22 -0600 From: "'Rev.' They're VERY cool... My b/f just borrowed their cd entitled "Hot" from a co-worker and it's pretty cool. I was jsut getting to recommend it as something to listen to while we wait... Especially if you like good ol' classic type 40's swing and big band music... While listening to it, if I didn't know better I would have thought it was an album straight out of the 40's... Oh yeah, and if you do go, let us Angels know how they were live... I'm very interested... :) Our local college station KSYM-FM 90.1 plays them all the time and I think they were here last year in San Antonio. The station is part of the alt.insurgent.country movement and they play Junior Brown and BR549 at the same time as Robert Earl Keen; Kelly Willis; Marcia ball; and Shawn Colvin. Well, her current boyfriend would be really dissapointed if she were. However, I seriously don't percieve Jewel as being uncomfortable with sexual orientation since she can write about it. In many cases she's also addressing domestic abuse (like in "My Own Private God's Gift To Women") Keep in mind guys that Jewel _is_ a writer, and isn't going to always be singing her autobiography. I certainly hope she hasn't experienced some of the things she's written about, but that doesn't make those songs any less important. - -- Reverend Angus avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 23:05:31 +0000 From: "Andrew Fu" Subject: Gotta EARN That MOM CD! I feel like I'm on Singled Out! NOO! :) ). Doesn't have to be long, doesn't have to be short - just make me feel like you REALLY want it. I look forward to reading your replies! I thought she was incredible and I went out and bought the > CD. This was actually my first encounter with Jewel, too. It was pretty funny. Me and my friends were watching it, and making fun of each other. I don't remember the details, but I think one of my friends had mannerisms like Joan Osborne, so the comment, "You're Joan Osborne" was made. The comeback was, "I'll be Joan, you be this Jewel person". It was just a stupid game, but Jewel is still remembered by this friend as "who I was". We hadn't heard her sing yet. I wasn't exactly enthralled when I saw Jewel sing here, but her name stuck in my head. Later on Firefly (http://www.ffly.com), a really cool page until too many people joined and it started making some dumb rules (if anyone wants to talk about this, btw, feel free to e-mail me), a woman recommended Jewel to me. She didn't know much about her (I remember the comment "I don't think Jewel is the band's name, but apparently the name of the singer), but I bought her cd nonetheless. I especially liked the idea of buying a cd no one had really heard of (this was long before WWSYS got any airplay at all, not sure of exact date). I have enjoyed the cd ever since.
