At first I was like, this isn't like WWSYS, but I fell in love with the music. I remember telling Rob that I thought it was a really dark album, (but in a positive way -- Is that Possible???) Anyway, Rob almost immediately joined the list. At the time, I didn't use the computer as much, especially the internet. I don't even know how he found the list; I'll have to ask him. Anyway, months later we attended Jewelstock which was my first time hearing anything other than PoY. I sat there in awe of her music and even cried during a couple of songs (His Pleasure is My Pain, Fragile Flame, and one or two others, but especially those two). It was all so moving and she was so emotional when she sang. I'll just never forget it. I was shaking when I asked her for her autograph. I was one of the first few to ask her and was still in awe of the concert. I remember saying something stupid like "I thought since you made me cry, I could ask you for an autograph." I just wanted to let her know how much the music touched me, but I don't think she actually heard me because someone else asked her a question from the crowd and she looked up to answer. Oh well, it was still one of the most exciting experiences in my life. tlc ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 12:03:24 -0500 From: JAY_WILSON@yr.com Subject: HOW SMART ARE YOU? However, for the sake of variety, I'm at least listing different albums: 1) Sam Cooke-- The Man and His Music (Greatest Hits-type collection) 2) Miles Davis-- Porgy and Bess (re-mastered edition from the new boxed set) 3) Janis Joplin-- cd1 from the recent boxed set (early "Big Brother" songs) While not as cohesive, thematically linked, and important AS ALBUMS as the ones I listed last time (which included "Pet Sounds," "Astral Weeks," "The Velvet Underground & Nico" and a couple others) all three of these are loaded with some of my all-time favorite music and I'd hate to live without them. Of course, if I were actually going to a desert island and had time to take any cds at all, I'd probably grab at least 30 or so, but the above three would pretty certainly be among them. Well I wanted to put in a little story. I was and I'm still completely excited......you all might not be but maybe... Anyway...Metallica came to St. Louis Feb. 4th and it was the first concert i had been to that I had main floor!!!! I was ecstatic!! (SP?) Anyway needless to say the SHOW ROCKED!!! But the best part was that i touched Jason (bassist) a whole bunch of times and he squirted me with his juice drink. And James (vocals) handed me a pic one time and slapped my hand another time. I was extremely excited.....Anyway i just wanted to share this.....sorry to waste time and space but I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~julzee ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 16:38:38 -0600 (CST) From: Emilia Garvey Subject: Re: The Saddest Song I Ever Heard. Theres a song with that name now..it's RandB :) but its pretty expressive anyway. When I'm crying anything can be sad but my main ones 'd hafta be... (1)Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness(Smashn' Pump'kns:)-so instrumental, and it reminds of someone I know everytime I listen to it..its the whole reason I wanted the CD.. (2)Insensitive(Jann Arden I think)- Reminds me of the same person, but only cause I got it the day I met him...:( (3)Blackbird(the Beatles)- Reminds of 5th grade my really trying year...and my best friends then...not sure why.. Ray, let me know if you got my package, please. Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 18:00:19 -0500 (EST) From: BillYeh@aol.com Subject: 3 songs, 3 CDs The three songs that I find most painful to hear are: 1. Monopoly - Shawn Colvin. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard, sung beautifully by SC on her "Fat City" CD. She was nominated for a Grammy for "I Don't Know Why," but this song is better, IMO. 2. Suedehead - Morrissey. At least I think that's the title. First, I really dislike his music; all that whiny, "I'm so filled with angst" crap makes me want to puke. To top that off, though, this song starts off with a drumbeat that is almost identical to Soho's "Hippychick," which is pretty much the anti-Morrissey tune, in that it's fun, happy, and makes you wiggle in your chair when you hear it. 3. Just Another Day - John Secada. This song came out when I moved from DC to Houston, and I was miserable in Houston missing a really close friend. The song still makes me sad, even though I get to see my friend once or twice a year. OK, for the three CDs. I really think people should try to remain at 3 CDs, because to me, it means these are definitely winners in your opinion, which makes it more likely that I'll enjoy them. Mine are: 1. Shawn Colvin, Fat City. Round of Blues, Monopoly, Polaroids. A slightly more country, less emotional version of Jewel. Her second album, which is better than her first, Steady On, IMO. Since then, she's kinda slid down the hill, although I haven't picked up her new CD yet. I will, though, to see if I want to see her at the Ryman Auditorium. 2. Sarah MacLachlan, Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. I think most people on the list are familiar with this CD, and for good reason. She is a bit of a high singer, though (ref. Seinfeld episode with high talker). However, the hidden version of Possession is amazing, as are Circle and Mary. 3. Dire Straits, Love Over Gold. Not their most popular album, but one that I can listen to over and over. Brothers in Arms and Making Movies are really close up there, but this one, with the 14 minute long Telegraph Road being one of only 5 songs, is the ultimate Mark Knopfler work. Not for everyone, though. Making Movies is more easily consumed, I think, in that songs have to do with relationships, have more standard formats (4 minutes long), and have catchy guitar riffs. OK, that's it. Let me know what you think, and what yours are! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 18:12:22 -0500 From: "Wojtek Kowalewski" Subject: Top 3 CD's If i could choose three CD's to bring to an island, I would bring the following (in no particular order) 1. They Might Be Giants - "Flood" These two guys from Brooklyn New York, make rather funny, and comedic songs, the type that make one smile a rough day away. Songs you might be familiar with are: Particle Man, and Istanbul (Not Constantinople) 2. The Tragically Hip - "Fully Completely A great Canadian band, probable the best. 3. Rage Against the Machine - Self titled Some thing different ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 18:09:45 -0600 (CST) From: "I'VE GOT TO BELIEVE THAT SIN WILL MAKE A BETTER MAN. -MG" Subject: my three cd's 1) garbage :) 2) Melissa Etheridge Your little secret (hmmmm... :?) 3) kd lang ingenue doh! Well, I was in science (6th period, with Mr. Jones) and I was writing it in when I noticed that my life was over... the 1st was a school night. I was like "Damn!" in the middle of class, but only the kid who sits in front of me noticed. I noticed that during class, while we were working on something, MR. JONES BEGAN TO HUM WHO WILL SAVE YOUR SOUL!!!!! I was blown away, because he isn't they type to listen to Jewel. Well, after class, JOKINGLY I asked him if he could write me an excuse on the 2nd so that I could go see one of the best singers on earth in SF. He said "well, that would depend. Is he someone that I like?" =-) I said "SHE'S Jewel" and he was like "Oh? she's coming to SF?" and he was like "Sure, for jewel" and then one of my friends Nina said "oh, awesome, mabye I'll get my brother to get me a ticket!". BTW, Nina doesen't even own PoY, but she's heard pretty much all of it at my house. nick (who thinks that it rocks that he has a mom who loves Alanis and teachers who like Jewel!) ************************************************************************ * Nick J.
