One day my boyfriend was watching the video channel the Box and he saw the video for WWSYS. Later on he tells me, "I saw this video for some girl named Jewel and i *know* you'd like her alot... she's right up your alley." So the next night, I was in the car and WWSYS came on the radio, and before they even said it was Jewel, i somehow "knew" this was who my boyfriend was talking about. I was truly mesmerized by her voice, and almost drove the car into a pole... It wasn't until a few days later that I actually saw the video and was even more mesmerized by how beautiful she is on the outside ... So, a few days later I went to Borders and listend to PoY on a listening station, only then realizing that the rest of the songs on PoY are at least ten times BETTER than WWSYS... And as a sidenote, let me just say, that I've been a performer for most of my life, and about a year and a half ago I decided to give up singing and as cheesy as it sounds Jewel inspired me to go back to singing and I hope to be able to tell her that face to face someday... she might have just saved my soul... ;) Oh yeah, and my first live Jewel experience is coming up in April when we're driving 5 hours to see her in San Diego and maybe one of the L.A. shows... yay! :) - --Lisa "Your hands manifest thought." --Jewel Multi-Comm Las Vegas Nv. 208.129.48.2 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 01:17:07 -0500 (EST) From: Angel Subject: Re: NJC: Hypothetical EDA Gathering Sites On Tue, 11 Feb 1997 GraywolfLA@aol.com wrote: > << HYPOTHETICAL EDA GATHERING SITES > >> > Summer retreat at Fritz Creek Cabin!! > I'm in, how about JULY, in fact lets make it around the 18th or 19th. katherine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 01:21:27 -0500 (EST) From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Subject: re: Best New Artist curse Besides Living Colour, here are a few other Best New Artist curse-ees: Tracy Chapman: Won best new artist grammy in 1988. Precedence: bulk Let's see if we can't change this thread. Not that it's a bad one. Actually it's great although a little frustrating because it would take so long to investigate all that music. Here it is: What three songs are the most painful for you to hear for whatever reason? The reason doesn't matter. You might love or hate to hear the song. They might be emotionally painful or musically unappealing. So what are they. Luca- and I've heard Steve of the Rugburns do it twice in concert. The Tracy Chapman song don't remember the name but I'm sure you know which one. I saw Jewel do it once. A Cat Steven's song whose name escapes goes something like this- "You're still young that's your fault there's so much you have to go through find a girl settle down.... - --------------125D2CB4758F-- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 08:44:34 -0500 (EST) From: Leave the shadows dancing Subject: Jewel Stories! I'd like to add to this extremely important discussion. :) If you were on a desert island, meaning the ones you see on TV w/ no people, electricity, or modern conveniences, you'd have to bring a CD player that runs on batteries. And a LOT of batteries, too, since CD players use up batteries very quickly. Of course, if you are as brilliant as the Professor on Gilligan's Island, or as Rev. Angus, you could build a bicycle device for electricity (but not a working boat!). "Hey, Leo, this is just a hypothetical discussion, you moron!" Well, if this is all make-believe, I'd bring Jewel to the desert island (as well as my wife -- I wouldn't try any funny stuff). Then she could sing all the time, and we could get into deep discussions about hands manifesting thought, and whether we'd rather be a pebble or a blade of grass. :) Oh, I love the thread Larry started about first Jewel experiences. A thread I'd like to see: What three questions would you ask Jewel if you had the chance to talk to her for half an hour? Well, I know Jewel doesn't like the term, but I still consider her a true folk artist, no matter what she says. I think it's a compliment. And Jewel has made it big. It remains to be seen whether the fickle public will allow her to continue her success. Look at Suzanne Vega. She had a big hit eight or nine years ago ("Luka"), but hasn't had one since (with the exception of a remix of "Tom's Diner") despite excellent material. Vega is another folk artist who could be considered successful, though. Tracy, Vega, Jewel, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lisa Loeb (her #1 hit "Stay" was definitely folk, and her followup album was great and sold decently) - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #90 **************************
