These guys (one gal) are great!! Their album is brilliant IMO, and their live show even better. They blew Love and Rockets off the stage a while back. 2) The Sound- an old Brit band. I love em though no one else has ever semed ot have heard of them. I see their records (rememebr those) used all the time. but I do scour the bins lookin for stuff I missed. 3) Jack Logan- Weird-ass guy out of Athens, GA. (REM country) Very rootsy, maybe acoustic grungy kind of stuff. Very real. Great songs. Just my thoughts for now...I could list bands for days...but that would be silly. And one last recommendation...check out Mary Arden Collins. Saw her in Leola and loved her. Album forthcoming. My son Erik came home and wanted me to listen to a new CD he had just purchased. He said he thought I would like it because of how much I liked Jewel. It was the Deana Carter CD. He stuck it in his CD six-pack and off we went for a ride. When we ride in his car, we play what he wants to hear. That's only fair. But usually it is a steady stream of Rush, R.E.M, and Bob Marley. Lately it has been Dave Matthews and Cownting Crows. He was hoping to see Jewel at the Rugburns show so he has been borrowing my JewelStock tapes or as he affectionally likes to call them, JewelSchool. Well he starts playing Deana Carter and I'm totally shocked. It's country! My son actually went out and purchased a country CD? Is this the same kid that practices his drums and leaves me with echoes of everything from Rush, AC/DC, Metallica and every other power drummers rolling through my head all day. Country! "Calm down Dad. I thought you had an open mind to music. Don't be so close minded. Just give her a listen. She's really good." Not only is he listening to country but he is lecturing me besides. And he's doing it using my own words. I don't know how many times I tried to broaden his musical taste by getting him to listen to jazz, country and even folk. Somebody please tell me how this happened. It seems that many other EDAs have gotten bit by Deana as well. This was the first time I have heard Deana and I did like the CD. But for me, no one tops Patsy Cline. Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt and many others have included her in their list of major influences. More suprises from Erik. He bought me a gift. The Leann Rimes CD. He said that I might like it. He said that "Blue" sounds like Patsy Cline. What's he been doing, raiding my CD collection? How else would he know what Patsy sounds like. I better hide the rest of my Jewel tapes otherwise I'll probably never get then back. You know, I don't think anyone has ever actually asked that here before! Here's the lowdown. Jewel seems fascinated with the fact that all her unreleased songs get taped and traded around the net by her fans for free. But she has never announced any official taping policy, and taping her shows is not officially sanctioned. In fact, her own crew is diligent about busting anyone they see with a tape recorder at the shows. They probably believe that by limiting the number of tapes, and ensuring the ones that do get through are not made under the best circumstances, they reduce the likelihood of a quality commercial bootleg being produced. I also think Jewel likes the fact we're so resourceful, and I think she possibly considers it fun see who they can catch and what gets through. This is all just speculation on my part though. The bottom line is, you must sneak the recorder in and be stealthy while recording. Video is out, unless you're lucky enough to have one of those new $4,000 digital video cameras the size of a cigarette pack, in which case you'll be our best friend. :) If you get caught during the show, you can try identifying yourself as an EDA from the mailing list. I've actually seen that work! But it's all a matter of circumstance. The other option is to get to Jewel before the show and ask her permission. I've never heard of her turning down a request from anyone who actually got to ask. With the venues she's playing now though, the possibility of being able to do that that seems remote. Good luck! They have just released their debut album titled Not The Joneses. They are really, really, good!!! Here is a brief introduction about them: Not The Joneses is a modern pop/rock band which fuses today's contemporary style of music with what could only be termed as classic melodic vocal style. Their unique blend of individual musical influences have provided an interesting backdrop which allows them to explore a vast number of musical styles, all while maintaining their flavorful band feel and without compromising their extremely melodic and catchy vocals. NTJ began in 1993 as one Chicago area musician with a vision. The man with the plan was singer/songwriter Mark Chaffee. The plan of the man was to break down as many barriers as possible within the countless facets of the music industry. This would enable the powerful message of NTJ's music to be brought within reach of everyone, regardless of age, sex, color, or creed. With these impressive goals, Mark soon convinced bassist Russell Bergum to leave the comfortable confines of his then current band and join him in this most noble task. Since Russell had spent his formative years in Minnesota, his Minneapolis Punk background greatly complemented Mark's melodic Rock influences. The two worked together sculpting, arranging and recording vast amounts of material some of which appears in one form or another on NTJ's self-titled debut album. It was not too long before they realized that what they were trying to accomplish required something more than just the two of them could offer. In the summer of 1995 an important decision was made, forever changing the course of NTJ history - the duo needed to become a band. Enter Dug Schoenbeck on guitar and Vince Consolo on drums. Dug and Vince had been playing together on and off for several years, and happened to be actively looking for a singer and bassist when they joined the band. Not only did they share in the NTJ vision, but they also brought a unique edge to the band. Coming largely from a harder Rock background, they helped to offset the Pop influences of Mark and Russ, which subsequently rounded out the sound of the current NTJ. With all their varied influences, the four members have come equally toward the center and have managed to create a dynamic sound and feel which is fresh and exciting. Given their depth and creativity, it was not surprising that NTJ were soon impressing audiences with their powerful and exciting live performances, as well as their studio work. This trend continues today, and as their multifaceted audiences grow larger, so also does their awareness that the Not The Joneses vision is being realized. * Not The Joneses * P.O. For nearly 24 hours (2am Sunday thru 1am Monday), the Internet Service Provider that houses smoe.org was down, thus no list mail went thru during that period. Jeff (list owner) was in San Franciso and was powerless to do anything. I've seen the ongoing album recomendations, however, I've stayed out of the discussion as I didn't feel I had anything worthy to reccomend. Today, I'm posting because I just came back across one band that I think most would enjoy, "The Gathering Field." I heard them live a month or two ago here in Pittsburgh (at Nick's Fat City, if you know Pittsburgh.) But had forgotten about them, until I heard them on the radio the other day. I guess I would describe them as a rock group - plenty of guitar, strong vocals, rock "feel." Although some of their songs are a little more alternative. Their lead singer has a bit of a Springstein complex at times, but he's cool anyway. They started here a few years ago, but are now touring regionally. They haven't taken off in a big way yet, but you will probably hear them on the radio before too long, they are already on here. They have two albums out so far, I hear they are both good & hard to find. But if you do come across them, you probably won't regret the purchase. They were awsome in concert. Anyway, let me know if anyone else has heard / likes them. Demian - -------------------------|------------------------- Demian Blair, Acme Design Co., Inc.
