We're getting down to the last of the new info. I'm going to save the most interesting project for the next & last post, but in the meantime here's answers to a few more long lingering questions: #1. So....Whats the deal on that Jewel "official" newsletter many of us signed up for way back when? Lenedra told me that the Official Newsletter is finally coming together! As many of you know, they had a major computer crash last year & a lot of information was destroyed. They had to begin again & they've been diligently working on it behind the scenes ever since. From what I was told you can all finally expect to actually see the first edition published somewhere around the end of March. I believe everyone that signed up back then is still in the database. I don't currently have info on how new folks can sign up for it, but I'm certain that all that information will be posted here when the time comes. According to what I was told, it is coming along great & it will be filled with all kinds of updates (some you'll already know) & photos. It's guaranteed to be very enjoyable for all EDA's. #2. Will we ever see a Jewelstock video? Unfortunately, this will likely not see the light of day for a long time, if ever. There is over 23 hours of footage & most has unusable audio. The amount of work needed to edit the raw video & synchronize the ADAT audio to all of it (proffessionally) is monumental. I briefly discussed doing a simple version of the 1st night only & that might be a possibility down the road. But for now its pretty much a dead issue. #3. Hey, since the album is delayed, does this mean we'll have to wait on Jewel's book of poetry, too? You'll have to wait a little while, but you wont have to wait until the album is released. (For those new folks benefit, I'll explain. Jewel will be publishing a book of lyrics, poetry, prose & writings that should be very intriguing to folks interested in her other avenues of creativity. Folks who were at Jewelstock know her "non-song writing" tends to be much more personal than her lyrics.) Originally, Jewel's book was to be published to coincide with the album, but Lenedra told me that they are going to try to get the book out before years end. I took lousy notes during this part of our conversation but I think I recall a mention of September. (Please don't quote me on that). #4. Is there a title for Jewel's book? Funny you should ask! :-) As a matter of fact, yes. The title of Jewel's book is............ta da!........."ACCIDENTAL POET". Lenedra told me that this was also being considered as a title for the album, but they didn't want to title the book & the album by the same name. I have no info on who the publisher is going to be but I'm sure all that info will be available here first, when the time comes. I'm already aware that many EDAs want autographed copies, so please refrain from privately emailing me regarding this. I'll be sure & check out what possibilities may be arranged as regards to this list. Otherwise please wait for more info. That's all I currently know about the book. #5. Anything else? Although I've told you almost everything I know of so far, there is still one more INCREDIBLE project in the works that ties in with "Accidental Poet". I have a few pages of notes that need to be organized & I'll post that as the final installment in these updates during the next few days. I will say its something VERY unique that will thrill the most devoted Jewel fans to no end! (It's NOT a Jewelstock 2,though...) At times I can be a true EveryDay Angel. And at othertimes I sound like I want to rip your heart out. By reading all the letters and learning from you all, I have become a better person. One of the things I learned was something better than flaming. What I learned to do was to write a letter that weakened the intended victim with a giggle and then made its point with a growl. My letter, Monkey Smacking Club, was both crude and stupid. But it was done so with a purpose. Both Edward and Justin wrote me nice letters back. I want to thank them for that. I was not the only person that reacted to there letters. The letters we collectivly sent made a difference. There are unwritten rules on this list. They are not on the FAQ and don't have to be. They are like a invisible film that comes as an envelope with everyone of of your letters. It may take some people a longer to understand them. You don't have to read the rules, you can feel them in every letter. It is like trying to describe the feeling of love. You know what it feels like but you just can't put it in words. Whats next for Edward and Justin? They are both going to see Jewel at the 9:30 club in DC. This is what you two should do when you meet. Call each other jerks and yell at each other for a while. When you get all that off your chest, grab each other and hug. Oh stop worrying about homophobia and just do it. After suggesting on the list that I was tired of only a hand shake from Nancy Morales each time we met, I got a warm kiss from her at the last show instead. It didn't end there. Tom Morales grabbed me and we hugged as well. I was bonding with people that were total stangers just a short time ago. Words can not describe how great this feels. At the same Rugburns show, I was introduced to Jewel by Larry G. She reached out and shoke my hand and said, "It is very nice to have met you." Just a few kind words and a nice jesture. She will never know how just so little will mean so much. You to can do a lot for someone with just some small jesture. Its easy. Edward and Justin, please let us all know how everything goes. So let me close with a few new EDA words. It has always been said that the earliest the 4th JewelStock Tape could come out is after Jewel's next CD comes out, so yes we'll have to wait. (For those unaware, the 4th JS Tape is the stuff Jewel performed with the band at JewelStock, we were not allowed to tree any of the band stuff, at least not yet) However, there is no guarantee that it will come out at all. Atlantic Records likely has some say in this matter, and I for one am convinced they won't want to see it distributed (treed). I'm quite sure Alan has the same feeling on that, and I'm certain he'll chime in with a response too. Tonight, I had the good fortune of getting a preview of the Rugburns' contribution to the upcoming tour. The lads headlined at the House of Blues. This was the first time I had seen the band in a large-ish venue, with the volume WAY up (along with the focus and energy). I'm pleased to report that they were up to the occasion. I met up with Nancy and Tom Morales in the Foundation Room (members only; I have a friend who let me deetz off her privileges for this one). Nancy and Tom had buttons made with way neat pictures from the Java Joe's show last Saturday. They gave me one to wear with Jewel and Steve wearing each other's hats, it was great! Nancy and I strolled back to the dressing room, where I gave the band the first copy of a compilation tape I had made from three of their shows over the last month. Nancy way outdid me with gifts for each of the band members: gorgeous shirts, each in the style the band favors (Steve got an embrodered black formal shirt, Stinky got a 100% virgin polyester Hawaiian shirt; John got a striped red and gray western-style shirt.) Each of them wore their new shirts for the performance! A few minutes later, Vanessa, Igor's daughter, arrived. She is a great kid; Igor doesn't brag about her enough (and he brags about her a LOT!). We had met before the Rugs' Santa Barbara show, and Igor and I convinced her to come to the show tonight (no arms were twisted). Igor, apparently, was off chasing new talent at a songwriter's convention with EDA Erick Garske and decided to take a pass on this one. I told Vanessa what I had heard in the dressing room, i.e., that TAPKAJ (The Angel Presently Known As Jewel) was planning to "come down" for the show. Nancy, Tom and I (mostly I) convinced Vanessa to call Igor to gloat over the fact that we were gonna get to see TAPKAJ again. (That's when we found out that he was otherwise engaged.) The show started after 11 p.m., and it was a school night, too. Unfortunately, I had decided to be a *mere* spectator tonight, so I left my tape recorder (and my Silver Sharpie) at home. The Rugs rocked nicely, and the crowd was responsive. About two songs into the set, TAPKAJ materialized right in front of us. I said hi, and I gave her the other copy of the tape I had with me (I was up until 3 a.m. last night editing this one). About an hour into the set, Steve called for Jewel to join him on stage. They sang five songs together: Old Lover's House; Impala (a neo-doo wop soon-to-be classic); YWMFM, Silver Lining (I kept thinking about the Sharpie I had left at home) ("We used to have hope, now we've got soap-on-a-rope"), and Daddy, She's a Goddess. Very fine performance, great sound system; a sight to behold. Nancy, Tom and I were happy to be living our dream, and Vanessa was thrilled. Afterwards, Vanessa got to meet Stinky and John (Vanessa: "He DOES look like Prince!"). We all had a great time. Everyone is gonna have fun on this tour, I'm sure! ttyl, - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997 07:41:10 -0500 (EST) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Old memories or pet food In a message dated 2/5/97 8:24:28 AM, you wrote: >>when I was like 8, we had these chocolate treats for our dog that I'd >>eat. >>I have no idea if they were real chocolate or not. OK, I want to ask all EDA's going to this show to please E-mail me and let me know so I can put together a list. Please put your real name on it too (cause I get confused). Then we can plan what to do the eve of the show. Rob and I are considering getting a car (complete with a driver) to take us from our home in Old Bridge, NJ to NYC. We thought that if there were enough interested EDA's they could meet here, leave their cars, and we could ride in together. So, once we decide what we're doing (i.e. where to meet, dinner??, etc...) we can get everything signed in blood ;-}. You know, make reservations, etc.... Anyway, feel free to e-mail me privately or whatever. Look forward to seeing everbody. That's very nice and all, but I have another request. There are a ridiculous amount of posts to this list. In the beginning, we talked about Jewel and her music. Now there are personalities on this list and everyone wants to share their own stories about how they were up all night studying or how their cousin is visiting. This is fine. Others pay homage to Jewel by writing their own poems and lyrics. This is fine, too. But please (here comes my request) use the subject line correctly. If you want to run off at the mouth about whatever, fine, but say in your subject line what your post is about. Most of us want to hear news about Jewel. If the subject line of your post is clear, we can read what we need to and get on with the day. Others who care about your "top ten list of what's great about Jewel's hair" nonsense can read that too. PLEASE don't just write "ALL READ THIS" or "VERY IMPORTANT" on the subject line. It's inconsiderate to those who don't have a lot of time to spend with this, but enjoy Jewel just the same. Thank you. -Terrill ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997 12:21:13 -0500 (EST) From: gregdunn@indy.net Subject: NJC big time: Toni A quick note: Toni's still off the list due to time constraints, but we'd like to announce that she now has her own car and has been admitted to a very nice preparatory school, ending our immediate concerns about her education. :-) Stress levels are at an all-time low around the house these days. Hi again folks, On to my final update on upcoming projects. Think about this: What would be most fascinating to the most devoted Jewel fan? Would it be a peek inside her writing journals & poetry? How about watching her take journal entries & poetry & molding them into songs? Or perhaps being a fly on the wall when she was alone & working out material? Or hanging out in the studio while she was recording, perhaps? Well, these are not as hypothetical as one might think. The incredible new project I alluded to earlier is going to let you in on precisely those situations. Later this year, Jewel will begin releasing the first in an ongoing series (yes, ongoing series) of approximately 30 minute videotapes which will show all the aspects of Jewel's creative process. Songs will be explored from their earliest form (journal entries & poetry) through their evolution to completed songs, recordings & performances. These videotapes will also contain current interview footage of Jewel explaining how she does it. They will contain footage of Jewel writing, in the studio alone working out songs, as well as recording & performing. Camera's were set up & running while she was alone in the studio. You'll be able to see her literally working journal entries & poetry into songs, talking & singing to herself & all the stages she goes through during the creative process. Everyone left the room/studio(no cameraman) & the cameras roll while she is working, to capture the side that no-one sees. This series of videotapes are also to be called "Accidental Poet" & should be truly amazing. I don't think any songwriter/poet has ever been so open in letting people see their muse in action like this. It's a totally unique project that is sure to be very compelling & fascinating to all EDAs! That, my friends, is the end of all the info from last Saturday. My apologies for dragging it out somewhat but I think you'd agree that a LOT of information was covered. I'm now putting my sore typing finger (yes, I only have one!) to rest. I look forward to seeing more of you at shows & I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :-) Best wishes, Alan (MrBB) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997 13:14:59 -0600 (CST) From: James Judd Subject: JC:Accidental Poet Cool! I have always hoped something similar would happen. I don't know how many of you have seen a tape like this (the only one i've seen is Aerosmith's) but it's a real treat to see all the songs you love in early form, and the artist working out the final arrangements. Wow, that actually sounds like i know something about music. Well i don't :) Anyway, this is superneat. In order to make these videos have market appeal though, are videos or live footage going to be included? It would really round out the tapes well IMO. Accidental Poet: Carnivore (starts mentioning Sean Penn and Jewel, and explaining whether or not it's the inspiration for the song, development of the lyrics and music, early acoustic performance, any tweaks it's gone (or is going through now) then ending with live band performance of the song in the state it exists when the production is completed of the tape- sound good?) Will there be a Jewel video club where we can get one a month? ;) I'm not as into Aerosmith anymore, but i still enjoy looking at that video once in a while. Personalities really come through, and i think we will get excellent insight into how Jewel works. Ahh, bliss :) James, who is going to Montgomery to see Star Wars (in a THX theatre!) now ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997 12:40:35 -0600 (CST) From: "Tim Gavin, The only true paranormal of the Fu Sheng beaver." Subject: RE: sellout Someone said that signing to a major label from an indie label is selling out. I beg to differ. Major labels can give artists the circulation that, as a whole, indie labels can't match. Signing to a major label IS a step in the evil staircase of "selling out", but it's not a cause. I hope less than Jake does well, because they've been working their butts off with their music for years. I foresaw that coming for them anyway. They're a great outfit. Time will tell whether they stay with their ska sound, or change it like No Doubt did when they got their major label debut. Don't pre-judge them, they're nice, well-meaning boys. tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Feb 1997 14:44:43 -0500 From: Todd Beaupre Subject: Less Than Jake At 12:40 PM 2/6/97 -0600, you wrote: >I hope less than Jake does well Sounds like a rip-off of Better Than Ezra. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Feb 1997 14:48:13 -0500 From: Todd Beaupre Subject: NJC: INXS I don't know if any of you care, but INXS will be doing a live online chat at the firefly web site (http://www.firefly.com) today at 4:30 PM EST.
