New EDA hits the nail dead on Re:EVERYONE PLEASE READ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 03 Feb 1997 23:58:41 -0500 From: Luis Araujo Subject: New Album Post (a bad thing to me) I can't speak for the others but I'm not upset because I won't hear the new album. Jewel could give all us EDA's a personal copy of the album and I still would be a little disheartened. I don't feel that trying to squeeze some more money out of this 3 year old album outweighs sharing her music with the rest of the world. I guess we can't blame Atlantic. After all, they are in the business of making money not sharing music. If by limiting Jewel to 1 album they could make the most money off her, you can bet there would only be one Jewel album released. I fear that by trying to capture the trendy listeners, they will lose the ones who would be willing to lend her a hand whenever she needed. The listeners that purchase music because it is popular are fleeting. A lot of people that don't have our resources will be deprived of this album that they have been promising for the last year. I wanted everyone to share what I was lucky enough to receive at Jewel Stock. This decision will benefit the listeners that have only now been told by the media (i.e. american music awards) that Jewel is talented. Someone just told me with service charge, tickets here will cost about 27 bucks a peace. I guess this is the price of fame. I think I'll toss on some Schubert or Mozart in my CD player. They produced music methodically, died virtually penny less, but left us with a beauty above and beyond all thought. I am just a little disappointed at the direction that this is heading. Please be patient with us angels that are having a hard time swallowing this. "Support what is right, Oppose what is wrong; what you think, speak; try to satisfy yourself, and not others; and if you are not popular, you will at least be respected; popularity lasts but a day, respect will descend as a heritage to your children." A little food for thought. Cheers! Luis At 07:40 PM 2/3/97 -0500, StayMur@aol.com wrote: >Ok so many may not agree but I think this could be a great thing. While some of her older songs are a little crude and naive, they are a provide a glimps of wher she was at the time. Jewel has said this about POY. By going back to the recording and re-doing them, her place at that time will be lost. Many people have expressed here an interest in her devolpment as an artist. While I am new, and will not pretend to speak for the group as a whole, the impression I get is that the vast majority of the Everyday ANGELS do not want to have to wade through such vulgarities to find curtious, intelligent conversation about Jewel, and other cutural topics. It's my guess that this is a large part of the reason why this is a list and not a usenet group. There's a lot of kindergarten ethics that could apply here, but if it didn't work back then, they probably won't work now either. The bottom line is that you are free to say *what* you want, but not necessarily *wherever* you want, (would you have a loud, vulgar conversation in church? at a funeral?) because of the group's greater right to be free from such comments if they desire. > >As for you sensitive ones, If you don't like my messages simply avoid them. > The point is that the angels as a group (a.k.a. "you sensitive ones") HAVE chosen to avoid messages similar to some of yours, and for this reason have organized this private mailing list. By choosing to participate in the list, the responsibility falls on the individual to abide by the group's accepted social standards. It is not the group's responsibily to change their standards to accomodate each individual. > >I only viciously attack those who think I am wrong in doing so. I don't know > I feel this is another separate issue from the vulgarity. In addition to not using offensive language, the group seems to try and promote a very "brotherly" atmosphere and avoid viciously attacking anyone. This is probably why they aren't Every-other-day Jerks or something else. As one angel says, post in public, flame in private. (sory if I misquoted) There is enough animosity and oppression in the world as is. After a few days, I see the Everyday Angels as a group that seeks to rise above that "everyday" level and get away from it, even if only for a few minutes. If you realy would prefer to be vicious and vulgar, there are more than enough places to do that in the world already. I, for one, would like to see the list stay peaceful and polite. > >how many of these explanations I have to right. But until I get my point clear >that i can right whatever damm hell I please I will continue to bite the heads >off those who oppose me. > Ed, It will take as many messages as it takes until you and the group are in agreement on what is appropriate. If the group felt that what you were saying is appropriate, then there would be little to discuss. If you had seen the merrit in the first few messages, then the matter would have been dropped as soon as it came up. As it is, it appears it me that at least some portion of the group disagrees with your language and the intentions of your messages. Every Day Angels, I have only been following the group for a few days, so I made a few assumptions in this message regarding what this group seems to be about. While this puts me at a disadvantage from one point of view, it also gives me a fresh prospective on the group, and possibly makes it easier for me to be objective. It was my hope that as an outsider, I might be more effective in examining the issue. However, I would like to get some feedback from the Old Time Angels about what has and has not been acceptable for public posts in the group. As I said, I stated what I think they are, but please correct anything I missed or got wrong. I see the group as a very good group of people who treat each other with respect. I get the impression that many of you consider each other friends. For these reasons I plan on being a long-time member of the group and I look forward to getting to know you all through you posts and email. However, I personally would never attack my friends or use fowl language with them. If this is not that kind of place, then I was wrong, and will not be around very long. But if it is, then you all have something very special here and I would like to see it stay that way. I look forward to hearing from you all about the kind of group you you have. It's really a nice thing but if you don't have some of the right programs that run such thems then it's mostly usless. I wasn't abel to run it for that same problem. Well for all of you that are in dismay because of this I have found a very simpile solution. This is a nice program out there called Microangelo that lets you change program icons and cursers that will let you set up each peice of this on your own (except for the sounds [I don't like most of those anyway] and the screen saver, but those are easy to set up without it). This also lets you customize it (I set it up a lot diffrently then the suggested way). So if any of you wanna use this to set up the them (or just change some icons other them the Jewel ones) you can look for the program at: http://www.download.com That place is huge and has a lot of good check it out. I'm not sure where the them it self is but if you can't find it I could put all the vitils in a .zip file and mail it to you (just send me a privite E-mail asking). By the way, how would one go about making icons out of picture files? I was trying with Microangelo but it wasn't working well. That's all, it's nice to have my mail back. Angels, Although I am upset about the album delay, I'll live. After all, we have some kick-ass tapes on the way in addition to what we already have! Anyway, saw Star Wars:SE this weekend...TWICE!!! :) Went Friday night with 14 of my good friends on campus. I took my lightsaber with me, and one of the other guys had his. We already had the tickets, so we just walked in and waited on line. Boy was it packed!!! And rowdy...I felt sorry for the ushers!! Five minutes from starting time they finally let us in. Everyone LITERALLY stampeded into the theater! It was a mob scene! We found some areas to spread ourselves out(there was NOOO way we could get our whole gang of 15 into 1 row with the onslaught of people pouring in). I was in the fifth row from front in the center with 4 of the other guys. Pretty much everyone was in the theater, when one guy raised his lightsaber up, and everyone cheered! I looked at my friend, then WE raised OUR lightsabers, and everyone cheered!!! It was great! Watching the movie itself on the big screen was a lot of fun! Especially when everyone was so interactive! We laughed...we cried...we cheered when the Death Star was blown up...when Boba Fett made his Star Wars debut...it was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had(next to, of course, JewelStock!). Being there opening night with a hyped crowd was a truly unique experience that I'll NEVER forget. We're already planning for Feb.21st when Empire comes out! Afterward we dropped some people off, then went out to a diner to celebrate. So, at 2 in the morning, I was eating a full meal, California Burger and all. I got back to my dorm room at around 3am, and crashed on the bed. I woke up around 11am. My roomie and I took a bus(I don't have a car yet) to the mall, and caught the 2pm showing! It wasn't as exciting seeing it the second time. Not because I had just seen it not 24 hours earlier, but because the crowd and the mood was different. There were mostly children there, so it wasn't as rowdy and histerical, but that was to be expected. But I did get to see the movie again, and it was fun! The enhanced scenes are great...they add more to the story and overall view of the Star Wars universe. So that's my Star Wars experience! If you haven't already, go out and see it! For those of you outside the US, I believe it will be coming out in March, so look for it! You can bet I'll be giving you a report like this in a few weeks when Empire comes out! I have to express my disappointment as well, about the delay of the new album. (BTW, I have nothing to do with it so don't email me any more complaints.) Although I'm planning a little break from the site in the near future, this just increased my level of intensity and frustration over the news. I've since calmed down a bit so it's safe to read on if you care. I can see the business behind Jewel. In fact, I can see it shining through a bit too well, overshadowing the reason we're here. Atlantic has put a lot of time and money into Jewel, paying the way for those endless road shows. Yes, Jewel toured nonstop and worked hard but she wouldn't have been able to do that if not for a record company to advance the money in the first place. It sounds like the "Blowfish" disease, another Atlantic cantagion. Promote the debut for years and follow the frenzy with more material and make the world sick to death of an artist. After all this, they may as well push the album back further so there's a delay. I'd hate to see the backlash that happens with some new artists. I think Tori has a nice schedule with an album and tour every other year. Jewel, being so prolific, could go every 18 months. Look at Neil Young and Prince, who flip off the companies and release top notch stuff every 10 months or so. I do believe that this conflicts with Jewels idea of being around a long time and putting out a lot of material depicting where she is at that time in life. These recordings, which I bet some will be re-recorded, will reflect her 18 months, even two years earlier? And then she has to tour and support this material, some of which like SIBTW and 1000 Miles have already been guitar licked since 1993-1994!! The point is that she's getting behind. Instead of "debuting" a song that she wrote that day, it'll be one that Atlantic hasn't allowed her play in two years. We see it with other artists. They only play the hits and new release songs instead of really new music that is still being created. Those Jewel shows are a thing of the past. We've already seen a tremendous drop in new stuff at shows as well. I also think the jump from free shows to the $25 range is a bit much. Isn't there a middle ground for someone with two singles, like $10-15? On the other side, if you pay $25, Jewel damn well better be more consistent and play more than 60-75 minutes. (We know she can go three hours without a problem!! :) ) I'd expect at least 90 at this new "performance level." There's a paying audience now instead of beer sponsored drinkers. I would have liked it a lot more if they had added more of the edited scenes back in the movie. He/she must sit in a Time Out for 5 or 10 minutes, depending on age. When the Time Out is over, that child must tell staff at least one way that his earlier comments could have been worded appro- priately, and without malice. If the child can not present such options, he/she must stay in Time Out until he/she can. Shall we start giving Time-Outs? =) =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 16:17:52 -0500 (EST) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB---Ponder this.... Hello again, My next post will continue with lots more news & info about future Jewel projects, but I have a question for everyone to ponder if you have nothing better to do. I've been thinking about the possibilty of Jewel releasing a double album come next year & something dawned on me. For the life of me, I cannot think of a single female who has released a full length double CD of ALL new studio material ever, outside of jazz, classical or opera. I can't remember a single pop/rock/folk etc female that has done this. Many have released double CDs of live recordings or hits compilations of older material (ie box sets, etc), but I can't think of any female thats done a double of all new studio material. This subject is totally conjecture on my part. Nothing, I repeat nothing, has been mentioned regarding a plan to do this. It's just something I was thinking about. If anyone can think of a female artist that has done this since CDs became available, drop me a line. I've been asking a bunch of industry people & they all have reasons why this isn't done, but no-one can tell me any female thats attempted it successfully or unsuccessfully. Remember, it must be a female artist that has released a full length double CD of ALL NEW STUDIO Recordings. I'm basicly wondering if Jewel were to do this, would it be historicly significant in the popular music industry? I welcome any comments. Am I overlooking something obvious? Or obscure even? Thanks! Very perceptive. All you said is exactly what this list strives for and generally tends to be. This causes many of us to be friends on a much deeper level than just fellow Jewel fans. As you may have gathered, EDA's get together at concerts and even non Jewel, EDA events. EDA's have been known to bring traumatic events in their live to the list for support and council. We truly strive to be a family. And just like any healthy family, this does not mean saying "whatever the hell you want" or viciously attacking someone until they agree with you. It involves compassion, understanding, and acceptance. Granted, some people may have trouble with this, but I hope they will take note of the environment they are in and adjust to that...not just cause friction and try to get the EDA list change completely to their views. We must approach any of this very carefully. Something you type hastily may be misinterpretted by others...likely will by some. We EDAs come from many cultures, backgrounds, ages, countries. Glad to have you aboard Demian...feel free to introduce yourself. I've been on for a while, but am generally to busy to post very often. For those who don't know me, I'm 23, a Registered Nurse, Mountaineer/Rock Climber/general Outdoor nut, Proffessional Photographer, and all around artist.....and, what do ya know,....I like Jewel! Take care everyone, and think before you act! I completely agree with freedom of speech and everything, but when it becomes rude and is meant in a disrespectful manner, it's just uncalled for. You can voice your opinion without being mean to others. And calling people "the sensitive ones"... What ever happened to "I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way?"
