Here goes my reasoning....we have our JS tapes which are album quality and have like almost everything that'll be on the album anyway, so we can have to songs all to ourselves for just a little while longer. We can play them out ourselves instead of radio doing it. We can hear the new album songs whenever we want anyway, so what's the deal..why be upset? And I also think that (totally my opinion) that the new album will take off in a BIG way and she just may go to Alanis status and I want to get a few more good concerts in there before this happens. So I'm not upset one bit, I'm fine with this whole thing, besides I'd love to see Foolish Games go top ten, it's a really good song. But I really want to see Atlantic release Near you Always, it's the best song, makes me cry everytime. I just want to see if Jewel may mention the EDAs in the liner notes of the New Album!! but that's it (how cool would that be) Stacey Sorry to anyone who doesn't want to see anymore thoughts on the new album but I just wanted to maybe help some people find a little good out of the deal. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 21:10:10 -0500 (EST) From: Chelsface@aol.com Subject: Re: MrBB. --COMPLETE (I forgot a few again) Tour DATES In a message dated 97-02-02 02:18:51 EST, you write: << 97/03/25 The Paramount Theater,Denver,CO >> YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had the cd for a year and a half now, and while I don't think it's the best album in the world, I saw Jewel as an amazing talent whose best is yet to come. So I've been excited by the prospect of a new album for a long time. But on the other hand, it's so nice to love an artist whose record company apparently loves her as much as I do. Most of the other artists I like seem to be with record companies that don't have a clue how to market their artists. Take Suzanne Vega, for instance. She released what is probably the best pop album of all of 1996 (_Nine Objects of Desire_), and no one heard it. It had hooks, interesting sounds, an amazing meshing of folk, jazz, techno, and hip-hop influences, along with some radio-ready songs (for both modern rock and top-40 airplay), and it disappeared from the Hot 200 in three weeks or so. It seems the her company thinks she deserves one hit every 8 years or so, much like Tracy Chapman (she got her second hit 8 long years after "Fast Car" even though she was releasing great music all through that time). Heather Nova is another great example. Sony apparently didn't realize it had the most impressive major label debut of alternative-ethereal diva pop since Sinead O'Connor's first two amazing albums, and Nova's wonderful album _Oyster_ was ignored by the masses. Atlantic also has mishandled other artists. Juliana Hatfield released the best album of her career in 1995, with confident, radio-friendly singles, and it flopped, not even going gold. Now Atlantic has been delaying her album's release because they think she'll compete too much with Jewel, even though their music is nothing alike. My point is that perhaps we should be very grateful that Atlantic is looking out so much for Jewel. I'm really looking forward to the tweaking of "Foolish Games"; the remix of "YWMFM" really made the song for me, and FG is one of those songs on the album that really did it for me in some parts of the song, but not others. And the new vocals will help, too, especially if Jewel uses her raw, powerful, pained yet beautiful voice she was using for "Near You Always" on Letterman. - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 20:53:01 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: re: MOM cd -- did I overpay?? Is it something I ate? While watching local news, the Eleanor Wedmire segment came on. She is the restuarant critic. People call in and ask her where in San Diego area they can find their favorite foods. Just as quickly as she is asked, she responds from memory, complete with exact address. Questions range from best place to get Chicago style pizza to where to get ostrich steak. Someone calls in and asks, "Eleanor, where can I just walk right in and get my monkey smacked?" Eleanor slowly repeats the question, "get my monkey smacked?" In the background you can hear the rest of the news crew laughing. Poor Eleanor is an older lady that appears to be very short and hides her dangling legs behind the desk and is now asking what the joke is because she doesn't get it. If you don't get it, well it only takes a visit to the local zoo to better understand the cliche. This made me feel so bad for Eleanor but I don't think this is what is making me sick. Could it be something I read. Let me see. Lets take a look at a few recent letters. In a letter intitled SMACKED!!!, Edward A Frayna said: > OKay the first concert I ever went to was: Guns N Roses/ Skid Row > The second: Bon Jovi?/ Jeff healy band[ you know the blind guy] > Third: Aerosmith/ 4Non Blondes[ what ever happened to them] My stomach feels OK so far. Just someone stating there opinion. How boring if everyone liked the same music. We wouldn't need record superstores. > Hopefully fifth: jewel at 9:30 club I'm feeling good now. Didn't > know a crappy band like Counting crows could have anything in common with > the Angelic Beauty. The Counting Crows are one of my favorite bands at the moment. And how the hell are the > Cardigans at #3!! The geek he is attacking is Steve Poltz. Steve can handle this light weight himself when he goes to see Jewel. That geek will be in the opening act so maybe Edward can share his opinion at that time. > LUV ME LUV ME SAY THAT YOU'LL SUCK ME!!! !@#$ Oh no, more usage of the famous suck word. No real harm done in Edwards letter. But then I read the first response. Justin gets my stomach rolling with the subject line: peanut butter makes my mouth really dry > i don't really have a lot of time to write this because i have an exam > tomorrow. there's just a couple of things i wanted to throw out... > > i saw several responses to an email stating that Counting Crows are crap > judging by who this guy has seen in concert i'd say he's pretty much a > connoisseur of crap... > > the second thing was i was curious as to if anyone on the list (besides this > guy) plans on going to the show in DC (9:30 Club) > > anyways, just some pointless bullshit i wanted to write in about > > JH As I tried reading this, my stomach forced me to run to the toilet. Now I have to read the rest of my letters from here. Good thing that I printed them. Just as I thought this was the end, along comes more from Edward and one from Larry G. First Larry's comments: > I personally don't care at all if you don't like them. > And that is the only point. > Please go *don't like them* somewhere else, where people are looking for > bands you don't like. > We try to be a little more sensitive on this list. > -=-Larry WOW! This guy has even angered the most angelic and kind EDA. Larry is a very special person that appears to not have an unkind cell in his body. Edward spilled some demon juice on him. Maybe some kind souls at Lizstock can undo the damage. The monkey smacking continued when Edward said: > Yo Peanut Butter Guy Eat Me!!! > Yeah this is for that sensitive SOB!!! At this point I was angery and could only think of one way to vent my anger, I used the offending letters to wipe with. At least I put the paper to some good use. I have a suggestion. When this kind of thing happens in the future, we should put the offenders in a penalty box like they do in hockey. We can call it the monkey smacking club. There they can smack each others monkey as much as they want. When they are done, we can welcome them back. We all need to vent every once in a while. Igor ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 21:57:13 -0800 From: "Carter Navarro" Subject: The PoY2 Predicament: Part One THE SHORT RUN: NOT UNBAD In the short run (meaning about a year), the album delay is awful. For months we had our sights set on a date that has already passed. Then we had a date that alleviated the nation's IRS-inflicted agony. Now we have a date that doesn't sound any closer than the Star Wars prequels. It's awful for those of us who need fresh Jewel like heroin (or in my case, crack) and perhaps for Jewel, whom I bet would like to get her new work out there and watch it generate some dough and attract some new fans who haven't been yanked into the fold by "PoY." At the same time, we're the only ones who are suffering this news directly. Very few music listeners outside of the maniacally devoted keep themselves updated on release dates; for most Jewel fans, a 1998 release is probably expected. She IS nominated for "Best NEW Artist," isn't she? What would a NEW artist be doing releasing another album already? (Feel the sarcasm and embrace it; I've remarked on NARAS' questionable definitions in the past.) THE LONG RUN: NOT UNGOOD But in the long run, where money supply doesn't affect the economy and firms can adjust their capital (this is econ-speak for "longer than the short run"), this is the ideal track for Jewel, Atlantic, AND her more recent (and more plentiful) fans to take. Jewel has not yet approached maximum exposure from "Pieces of You," Atlantic has not yet attained maximum fundage from its sales, and her fan base has not yet inflated to the fullest volume that "PoY" can pump into it. Neither Jewel nor Atlantic needs another album out their right now to get people's attention; more money stands to be made and more fame stands to be garnered if "PoY" stands on its own. We've known about Jewel's first album for quite a while -- some since it was released in March 1995, others like me who showed up about a year later -- but the folks that will sustain Jewel's career are those who are buying the album now and have joined the list only recently. Just because there are more of them now doesn't mean they will like Jewel any less than we do. They hear the same songs we first heard so long ago, and their reaction to her work should be the same as ours was, unless the newfound popularity somehow taints it. This possibility I find highly unlikely given the quality and uniqueness of Jewel's music. Most of the people on this list are at least INTENDING to stick with Jewel throughout her career - -- I won't take a hike unless she does a Ricola commercial -- and our devotion has been fueled by "Pieces of You." It's a great album, and an ideal gateway for those who are new to Jewel Kilcher into her wider repertoire. If our admiration for Jewel was initiated and solidified by "PoY," we could reasonably expect the album to do the same for a few hundred thousand more folks. To be continued... CGN ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 21:57:31 -0800 From: "Carter Navarro" Subject: The PoY2 Predicament: Part Two "BUT WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?" OK, so everything's all well and good for Jewel, her business partners, and her more casual fans, but how about us crack-smokers? Here's why I'm not taking the Express Elevator to Death... BEYOND "PIECES OF YOU" Since I bought "Pieces of You" only eleven months ago, Jewel Kilcher's first album is still a relatively new disc to me too, and even when it wears out -- which IS possible *gasp!* before 1998 -- I still have the inundation of the Official Gel-Toob Set (Innerchange, Radio, Rare, the JewelStock Trilogy) and my own couple of unofficial toobs to placate me quite a bit beyond Atlantic's perpetually delayed sequel. Even if newer list members can't wrangle up the JewelStock set, they still have the others to collect. Since JewelStock wasn't the magical event for me that it was for so many others -- owing primarily to the fact that I DIDN'T GO >:( -- I've found most of my non-"PoY" Jewel needs satisified by the older tapes and my concert memories. So if you can't get the JS stuff, you aren't shitouttaluck; you'll find infinite value in what you CAN get. So if you're REALLY bummed about the album delay and the only pieces of Jewel material you own are "PoY" and the singles, fetch "Innerchange Days" from a ready-willing-&-able list member. This duo will placate you through 1997. "FOOLISH GAMES," THE BEST SONG YOU'VE NEVER HEARD Before "You Were Meant For Me" hit the market, I thought the best choice for a single would be "Foolish Games." I know it doesn't have a beat and you can't dance to it, but it's one of the three best songs on the album (in my base opinion) and deserves at least as much fame as the first two releases have garnered. Now this song will get the job it should have always been assigned: reeling in more fans through the radio. Additionally, if/when "Foolish Games" is released as a single, MAYBE we'll get an unreleased B-side instead of a duplicate of a "PoY" track. If Jewel and her producers haven't thought of this yet, perhaps some friendly suggestions of just that to Atlantic or JewelJK@aol.com could bring it to their attention. Now, if "Adrian" were the next single I'd be experiencing a bit of a problem, but I expect "Foolish Games" will add a few more shiny framed records onto the wall of Jewel's office. To be continued... I'm not a professional counselor (I'm an economics major: my job is to make lives miserable, not better), so don't be surprised if the tally spikes to fourteen after this is published. Since this message was originally nine kilobytes (9K = Very Big), I decided to go the "Green Mile" route and serialize it. Nobody gets electrocuted this time, but I think I swear once or twice, so this probably gets a TV-14. Enjoy. CGN ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 21:57:48 -0800 From: "Carter Navarro" Subject: The PoY2 Predicament: Part Three TRAIN OF THOUGHT DERAILING: THE JEWELSTOCK CONSPIRACY! Pssst! New guys! I'm going to get a bounty put on my head for telling you this, but the truth must be known: JewelStock never happened! What these tapes actually contain is the manifestation of a giant conspiracy meant to torment dumbasses like you and myself who didn't get to go. The voice of "Jewel" is actually the voice of Dennis Harris computer-altered to SOUND like Jewel, hence the numerous mentions to the term "Harris Brothers" on the set. All the pictures you see on the JewelStock pages are merely the result of Adobe Photoshop and a lot of free time. So don't be sad if you can't get the tapes; they're all just a sadistic lie! THE EVERYDAY-OEDIPUS COMPLEX I admit to some kinship with Sean Hooks on the desire that Jewel was still just a musician of little fame and little audiences. It's always fun to really like an artist and have many opportunities to share with them the profound and defining moments that cluster in the infancy of their career. I caught Jewel in the early years of career adolescence, and even I feel a bit a of a loss in her exponentially increasing visibility. And although I'm a bit uncomfortable with the metaphor, old fogeys like Alan, Mike, Liz, Rachel, Selena, Greg, the Toms and the Harrises, myself (I'm one of the younger old fogeys) and numerous others who will yell "Why the hell aren't I on your list!" are like proud but sad parents. We miss having Jewel to ourselves and "nurturing" her at her small, devoted shows, but we are also overjoyed to see her really making something of herself out in the Big Bad World. The album delay is just another sign that she's really doing well; Atlantic knows it has something in Jewel, and wants her to succeed as much as we do. Of course we still worry about her, wondering if the attention will be too much, but we're confident she's had the "upbringing" she needs to survive it all and prosper. THE HORIZON EXTENDS BEYOND ALASKA And it's not as if Jewel Kilcher is the only artist out there! She writes great music, sings with rare power, and gives us new ideas to ponder while allowing us to swoon over the gorgeous messenger, but once you start pulling hair out over an album delay, you need to realize one of two things: (1) You like Jewel just a little too much, and (2) Your taste for music has become too narrow. I won't go into the first one, since I shouldn't criticize individuals whose appreciation for Jewel lies on a higher level than my own (though some EXTREMELY high levels are obviously in need of some correction). Besides, everything I've written above suggests that I may suffer this affliction. But as for the second one, the sprinkle of disappointment from "Pieces of You 2"'s delay hardly demolished my joy from the current and impending releases by decidedly non-Jewelesque artists like David Bowie, Moby, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, U2, and Trent Reznor. I don't know how many people can cast their musical tastes in such multitudinous directions, but investment in music should be like investment in stocks: go diverse. If one stock goes down, as Jewel's has (though the huge crash from the album delay has been nicely buffered with the tour), you still have the rest to fall back on. The combination of NIN's "The Perfect Drug" and Aphex Twin's "Girl/Boy Song" has virtually nullified the pain that this piece of musical bad news could have inflicted. To be concluded... All right, that's officially my most long-winded post since my review of the Bimbo's 365 tour-opener from last May. I'm not going to tell you how long it took me to write it, but economics majors have lots of free time. Perhaps I'm overreacting to prevent a massive attack of funk, but overreacting is what I do best, and I enjoy it beyond most anything. Hope this post earns an honored position between your dog-eared copies of "War and Peace" and "Catch-22." Remember one thing above all: Jewel is worth waiting for. It was recorded over two years ago. A lot has happened in those two years and it's wise of her to update the song to reflect how much she's learned and matured in that time. Though I wouldn't say Atlantic has nothing to do with it. - ---pat "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." -- Albert Einstein ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #71 **************************
