Well, If I'm gonna wait until 1998 for another album, I want a performance in a venue for +/-1000 In one or more of the following cities within driving distance: Birmingham Tuscaloosa Atlanta Nashville These are all cities where she can shore-up support in the South, which she always seems to skip. Birmingham is a strategic city because its local radio landscape and bookings are downright rotten. The city is also in driving distance of the others grouped with it above, so a multistate draw can be factored in. On a related note, how 'bout getting her online for City Stages 1997? This is a three-day festival in Birmingham where a variety of national and regional artists appear. Book her there, and she'll draw people from Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi. Bring the Rugburns too... they'll be able to play in the South for more than ten people. Shawn Colvin last year packed her corner, and this is before she got any of the media attention surrounding _A Few Small Repairs_. Good show, too. Just tell Jewel to bring Big Blue and a set list. And most importantly, will our old songs be compatible with the new album? - ---/- hmm.... "These foolish games are tearing me apart." Yeah, kinda makes you wanna scream that at Atlantic, ne? Okay, but Atlantic should recognize that there are a lot of people out there that have been supporting Jewel for a long time. Yes, it's nothing compared to the potential new listeners who will be brought in by the release of Foolish Games. But they need to do something to satisfy the new listeners and give something to the old. I suggest an EP. Release "Foolish Games" as a 5- or 10- track disc with the alternate version/s of YWMFM, some unreleased stuff, a few songs that might not make it onto the next album. They of course just send the FG single to promote it on radio but release the EP into stores. I think most of us could agree that Foolish Games is a good song to get out there. I've heard a lot of people dismiss Jewel as to "light" or "flaky" not taking her seriously because WWSYS and YWMFM don't really show off the depths she can reach. Foolish Games will achieve this. Someone mentioned a sad, slow song couldn't make it on radio. I disagree, what about "Don't Speak"? Most of Seal's songs? There are others, but this song's gonna do great. Expect it to debut in the top 50. I agree with -- Mike? or was it Dan? -- that the song needs to be shortened. If they could record it with an orchestra would be cool, something to give it more "substance" for the radio audience. - ---/- Scott Broughton sed... :->joking with Rob and Og (did I get those names right?) it's Aq. Just this morning as I watched the E! story on Jewel I thought to myself ``there is no way they will release Jewel's new album in the next two months.'' Unfortunately I was right. But EDA's, while this is discouraging, we should remember that partly because of the devotion of many EDA's and also because of the foresightedness of Lenedra and Jewel, we can all have access to a sneak preview of the new CD. O-K, I can't listen to the perfect, CD version of Absence of Fear or Carnivore or Jessica for another year. I guess I'll have to listen to the live concert tape versions instead. Unlike some singers, Jewel will still be out on the road, so we will be able to go see her perform (P.S. Please make a Southern swing on this tour, right now, none of the dates is within 10 hours of Macon, Ga.). So while this is obviously very depressing news, it isn't the end of the world. Pop Jewelstock and whatever other tapes you have into the tape deck and get ready for a Foolish Games video. After what Jewel has gone through to get to this point, it's hard for me to get too angry when she and Atlantic decide to stick with a CD that three years after release is becoming a major hit. I've just rejoined the list (from my vacation in the restful news-list hinterlands) after reading the lastest bombshell from Alan Bershaw earlier this evening, and therefore don't know what other folks' reactions have been so far, but here's mine anyway: Upon first reading Alan's message, I was quite taken aback and felt like we'd all been given a nice big slap in the face. It seemed as if they (Jewel, Lenedra, and Atlantic) were deliberately dissing a large, longstanding, and extremely loyal fan-base in favor of some potential listeners who (after two years, mind you) STILL haven't clued in-- as if 2+ MILLION records sold isn't enough! However, in the intervening hours I've calmed down quite a bit and have come to see that we (well, me actually) can weather this setback with no hard feelings if three conditions are met: 1) When the "Foolish Games" single is released it will not be a two-track cardboard-box affair like the last two, but will rather be an EP containing 3+ previously unreleased songs. We know that they've already got more songs in the can than they'll be able to fit on the new album, so this would be a perfect place to put them, will keep the long-standing fans happy (or at least somewhat contented), and will let everyone hear a hint of where Jewel's music has gone since POY was recorded in 1994. 2) When the new album is eventually released it will be re-worked to take into account the inevitable continuing musical growth that Jewel will have experienced between mid-1996 and early-1998. A year and a half is a long time, especially for such a prolific songwriter. If they don't make some changes (reworking songs, recording new ones), by the time this album is eventually released it will seem completely out of step with her live performances. I'd like to see a double-cd, myself, but I'm not holding my breath. 3) They promise never to do this to us again. Two years between albums seems to be pretty much industry standard. They're planning three years, but that's understandable (sort of) since POY really didn't take off until a year after it's release. However, that excuse will never work again. By the time the new album is released (especially if "Foolish Games" does as well as everyone seems to think it will-- without some pretty major reworking, I have my doubts) Jewel will be a well-established pop-star, and if it hasn't sold that well after 15 months or so, rather than renewing their promotional efforts they should just move on and release album #3. I don't think any of these conditions are unreasonable, and #2 and 3 especially seem almost like common sense. I'm still somewhat disappointed in the whole affair, not so much for myself (after all, I've got multiple live versions of most of the songs which were probable inclusions) but for all my somewhat-naysaying friends who, I think, would have been much more impressed by hearing songs like "Satellite" and "Carnivore" than by "Foolish Games"-- which is not only IMO a kind of boring not-all-that-great song, but has also already been available for 2 years. Of course, the new single version could change my opinion (if, for instance, it's arranged similarly to the "rock-out" version on, I believe, the "John Anson Ford 5/3/96" tape), but for now I don't want to get my hopes up too high. Oh well, this too shall pass. By April 15th I'll probably be so wound up in other things that I won't even remember that it was supposed to be the release date for the much anticipated (at least by me) new Jewel record. Trent Smith P.S. I suppose this means we're also gonna have to wait until mid-1998 to get that fourth Jewelstock tape too, huh? P.P.S. I was so anxious to get all the above out that I forgot to say it above: Hi, everybody, glad to be back.
