I think the club was on 9th St. in the West Village. It had a very popular bar up front and a small back room that held between 50 to 75 people. The stage was surrounded with fake palm trees. I think it was called the Paradise Room. My friend George Kanzler was there to review the show. He is a world famous jazz writer. I was already a fan. He loved the show. He told me who the tenor sax player was because he was impressed that he was sitting in with Tom. I can't remember who it was. Last name Cohn maybe? Many years later I had several Tom Waits sightings. As I was driving uptown through the Soho neighborhood of NYC, he was sitting in a outdoor cafe. The whole scene looked like one of his album covers. Another time, the strangest encounter of all. Some of my friends insisted the place we were going to was on 57th St. I protested but let the cab take us there. As I was the last person getting out of the cab, a person waiting to use the cab next was holding the door. All I could say as I looked him in the eye was, hi Tom. I couldn't believe that Tom Waits was holing the door open for me. I stood there talking for a few minutes as the cab driver yelled that the meter was running. I told him that I had been selling his records for years in my chain of record stores. Although my favorite artist, Bruce Springsteen,(only because I have listened to him since 1970) writes almost all his songs, one of my favorites was not. Jersey Girl was writen by Tom Waits. Another point of interest may be that Jersey Girl was writen by a Californian; Tom is from San Diego. San Diego area is now my home and Jewel has found it good enough to be hers as well. Well i see the Spice Girls are making a mark anyway already. But i'd just like to say a few things about them. Personally i think they're really great. Now the type of music i listen to is usually folk (With the exeption of Jewel and No Doubt) . And where i live (Ireland) usually noone knows the artist's i listen to like Jewel, Ani Difranco, Melissa Ferrick and Dar Williams. But i think the Spice Girls add....spice :-) to it. I don't think they are particularly talented either but they just bring pointless fun to the charts. I also think they're album is good to just sit down and chill out to. They have good voices and a good tune. And belive me they were totally overplayed here and i really think they're going to hit the US just as hard. So watch out for the Spice invasion :-) I don't know what point i'm trying to make but I guess there's no point in complaining about the Spice Girls coz as they said it they "just started the band as a joke and know they want to take over the world". I like they're message and their personalities. Sit back and enjoy them :-) Alright enough from me. I think i'll go back to lurkdom.
