First, the object is not to draw attention to Jewel, but to honor here with a gift in her name to a cuase she may support. And, each donation costs the organization a certain amount to process. A donation of $1.00 may cost more than that in overhead, thus negating the purpose and perhaps generating some animosity. I think it would be OK to either collect the donations and send the donations as a single sum, or have each person send their $10 or $20 directly to the organization in her name. JEWEL DOES NOT WANT TO BE POPULAR I have made anti-popularity for Jewel statements before and have been criticized as anti-Jewel or as selfish. I dont think that is the case. Here is my defense, itis true that I dont want to share Jewel with too many people and I hate seeing folk artists like her in large venues that dwarf their talent, especially with someone whose live set is as intimate and genuine as Jewel's. But what i really mean to say is, it's not that I dont want her to be popular I JUST WANT WHAT JEWEL WANTS Here is evidence to support my claims that Jewel does not want to "be big" ala Alannis or Sheryl Crow but more like Tracy Chapman or Joan Baez or Joan Armatrading or EmmyLou Harris. 1)"I'm Sensitive": This is a song about maintaining a certain degree of grounded realism and staying in touch with an innocent sensitive side of herself. 2)The Jewelstock poem "As a Child I Walked": This is the most obvious example with Jewel talking about how fame is a nasty habit spurred by the promise of glitter and glory and how she used to fed by nature and beauty and natural wonders and now she lives not in nature or a forest but in hotel lobbies, fed neon and cold pizza. 3)"Satellite": I like the condescension in her tone but the song suggests that she is becoming like the people she is putting down, they play her on z100 in NY and MTV for Christ's sake. When will this end, soon I hope, I don't think there is another radio friendly song on Pieces though it is still selling huge amounts of albums, and the new album wont be out until summer which is good. 4)Hands Manifest Thought": This saying has been flying around this list recently. Jewel says that it means that you have to be careful what you surround your self with, what you let your hands manifest into though, this one is self explanatory I think. 5)Sean Penn: Of her friendship/relationship with Penn Jewel often commented that it was hard to be in public with him because he was always being mobbed by people and had no privacy. 6)I have heard various other quotes from Jewel stating that superficial America shocks her being from Alaska and all. She wants there to be a happy medium but it is hard for her to find recluse or shelter from this world of political/music industry world in which she must flourish to achieve. So, I just want to bring this up now because I believe that the current not is an important point inthe Jewel popularity chart. From here she could either go up to celebrity, seriously famous status, or down to relatively known but not overly popular folk singer. It will be interesting to see where she goes. Awards do not help either, it hurts to root against her cause I love her music so much and also love hearing her speak, but Grammy wins and the like will only add to her mainstream popularity. And speaking of mainstream, Jewel should take the lead of Tori Amos, who recently invited Jewel to help out with RAINN, Tori's anti-abuse organization. You don't hear Tori on the radio or see her videos on MTV, or even VH1, well not as much as Jewel anyway. Tori's fans are therefore that much more loyal and devoted and she will have far less teeny boppers or people who only know one or two songs at her concerts-God I hate those people. So, enjoy Jewel on Dave tonight, she'll do Foolish Games is my guess, could be wrong, and think about how popular you really want her to be, but more importantly, rethink what she wants. I am looking forward to my loge seats at the Beacon, yeah right, but am only going cause it still is Jewel and it'll be interesting to see how see interacts with an audience of that size there solely for her, which she has yet to do. I mean, yeah, shes played Madison Square Garden as opening act or part of Jingle Ball and has done big festivals, oh yeah, the frisbee thing is another anti-popularity example but I digress, but this is the first time such a big audience willbe turning out for a Jewel show, and they will all have seats, as opposed to the usual club-bar scene she has been on before. I am looking forward to it, but would be looking forwad to it more if it were at say Irving Plaza or the Wetlands or Roseland or The Bottom Line or some smaller NYC club, but the Beacon is one of my favorite theatres still, just not for Jewel :). So, that's all I guess. How the hell do I not think Jewel's hot? ::chuckle:: Many reasons. I'm not sure if you read a post that put up long time ago. Either ways, Jewel looks exactly like one of my ex girlfriends, and I'm kinda tired of that look, if you know what I mean. Also, she used to be hardly shown anywhere until recently, so before she became popular, I used to videotape interviews and collect mags with articles about her and I would say, "Damn, she looks good." Now I practically see her everywhere (in the tv, radio, computer CD, etc.) and I think she's beginning to look bland. Don't get me wrong, she is very fine and stuff, but you normally becomed jaded to these things. Can I assume you have one of those crushes on her too? :) Ronald On Tue, 28 Jan 1997, Mike W Greenleaf wrote: > > On Tue, 28 Jan 1997 14:12:25 -0500 (EST) Ronald Lazo > writes: > >Hi, > > > >Does anyone have pics of Jewel from the AMA awards? My problem is that in several interviews I have seen (Jon Stewart to name one) Jewel has come across, IMO, as stuck up and pretensious. Before you damn me to the firey pit of hell, let me defend myself. I am a philosophy major, and even I find her continous barstool prophet "philosophizing" irritating and condescending. Jewel - you may be famous and successful, but this does not make you Kant! You are 22 for gawd's sake. I felt that she was talking down to Jon trying to impress him and the audience. He was clearly trying to get her to lighten up. I won't even comment on her "Germany seemed guilty" rant. What the heck was that?! My friends (Jewel song fans) and I feel that her attitude might put a lot of people off. I have to agree. I'm sure Jewel is sweet and nice in person, but I think she needs to chill out in interviews. Anyone? I think it was the new version, because unless I'm insane, which is very likely, the PoY version wouldn't match up with the video. Test it by doing this: put PoY in the CD player, and play your video of Jewel videos (I got one, and no I can't make copies because YYMFM is the only one I have so far) and put the TV on mute. Start the PoY cd at the same time at YYMFM. When it shows her singing, it won't match up in most occasions. Anyway, I'm going to get the YYMFM single TODAY!!! nick WHo just might be wrong... go ahead and test it! ************************************************************************ * Nick J.
