Warning: opinions stated as fact below! :^) Raphael, Songs have _always_ had the ability to bring true feelings to the surface. And I think that Jewel is particularly adept at describing some of these feelings in a way that allows a person who is, perhaps, not as attuned to their feelings as they could be, to realize that they _do_ feel that way. However, Jewel also has the talent, the emotional pull, to draw you into the mental state of the situation she is singing about and make you feel that way too, even if you don't, really. In your case, being lucky enough to have found your dream girl (I wish I was that fortunate), and being placed in the emotional state of having to deal with her loss, of course you would tear up! It doesn't make you an _overly_ emotional freak. All I had said to him was that it is not his, nor our place to forgive her sins, and being a somewhat religious man yourself, I would think that you would agree. I pray for people all the time. But I never take it upon myself to be the forgiver of their sins. As far as I'm concerned there is only one person that has the power to do that. And that one person is not me. Not far off.... Hi all, My apologies for not crediting whoever recently was curious about the number of performances Jewel was doing a year. In that interesting post it was said that Jewel somewhere claimed to have done 800 performances in a year or so's time. That post inspired me to analyze some of the info in the Jewel Online "Performance Chronology" database here. While I have no exact number, depending on when she reportedly said 800, its not far off believe it or not. This past year she did well over 250 regular gigs. In 1995 she did a similar amount of gigs, but there were "tie-in" local radio station performances the same mornings as well as many "in-store" performances during the afternoon. Three performances a day (on just those days alone) already adds up to 750. In addition to all that, in 96 she also did over 50 TV performances. Then theres all the peripheral interviews, promotional assignments, etc, that are squeezed in here & there. It's a testament to her stamina & determination to have kept up with such a schedule. So, her claiming 800 isn't any "ridiculous exageration", as any normal person would think. Pretty amazing, huh? Plus she managed to write an incredible amount of great songs & a ton of new poetry all the while. She's the hardest workin woman in show biz! Alan(MrBB) PS. For those curious about these things, point your browser to the Jewel Online Performance Chronology at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchrono.htm You'll find info on many of the above mentioned performances here (with photos of some & frame grabs from the many TV performances). This is an ongoing project & your suggestions, additions & corrections are always welcome. Enjoy! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jan 1997 18:55:51 -0500 (EST) From: Leave the shadows dancing Subject: Re: njc: sweet 16, liz a question.. Do you have an idea of what ebonics is about? The school board felt that the teachers were not able to communicate to all the children because their dialect or language (i don't really know if its another language or just a dialect, i can't decide) was different. There was no one who was trying to teach Ebonics in school instead of english. what they were trying to do was help the students who spoke Ebonics to learn "standard english" by translating for them form ebonics to "standard english" How could that hurt them to be learning standard english? There's the other issue of whether this idea should have been proposed in the first place and that it is a devisive to talk about a seperate langauge for blacks but that really has nothing to do with this argument. >The same thing happens when you teach Mexican immigrants in >Spanish, you hinder their chance to make it, you handicap the >dream. And that is the ultimate heresy. What this country is >supposed to stand for and whatit's actions say about what >it REALLY stands for are laughably dissimilar. Again, i don't see the problem... It'd be pretty dumb to try to teach spanish speakers about american history or engineering in English if they don't know english yet. The way to go in my opinion, and in my mom's ( who teaches english as a second language) they need to learn the language before they can fully function in this society. It's amazing how many professors, scientists, and engineers are stuck doing janitorial jobs here in the states till they learn english. Once they learn the language that's when they start getting chances to do jobs more suited to them. I don't know Who you think is perpetrating this... but the language barrier is very large and it's not english speaking peoples' fault that some immigrants speak other langauges. This country stands for what? equal opportunity... some might say this. Well, there isn't exactly that but it's not because of the reasons you state. >Conduct job interviews over the 'net. Fight the power! That'd be nice in as much as you wouldn't know a person's sex age or race, but in some jobs age, and other things like personality and the way a person carries him or herself matters. Actually all jobs are like that. Also if you want to be fair to minorities or immigrants the worst way to do it is to have interviews conducted over the ne. In case you Didn't know the net is a largely upper middle class white male domain. Not that that is a good thing but the cost of a computer isn't spare change... For anyone who doesn't know who I am (maybe all of you), I'm Rob's wife (NeOblCar). I met some of you in New Hampshire and was at Jewelstock. I seem to kinda sorta, vaguely remember being dubbed the den mother or something. Still don't remember? --- maybe if I say NACHOS :-}. Anyway, it finally got to be too much for Rob to keep up with between work and trips, so he unsubscribed and I subscribed. I may be a little dated on these responses, but I have to say that I would agree with James Judd's interpretation of the YWMFM video - that is what I got out of it- pretty much. What is this Choir of Angels project I read something about. It was great to hear about Jewel's song in Clueless, I thought that was her, but was not sure and my sister just gave me that 'not Jewel again' look. I think someone mentioned about their child dancing to Jewel all the time. On a related experience, my 7-year old daughter was walking around in a convenience store with me singing Pieces of You. Imagine the faces I got when my daughter's walking around belting out "She's an ugly girl, does it make you want to kill her,etc..." All I could do was shush her and snicker, realizing that probably none of those people knew the song or what it was about. Then, just the other day she finished out the first verse of Little Sister after I turned it off to get out of my car... I was so proud!!! So, anyway. For those of you I did not meet in New Hampshire, I hope to meet you someday, and would love to see everyone from the New Hampshire show again sometime. I've been an avid Jewel fan for a while now and am looking forward to putting my two cents in. Most of my friends and family are sick of hearing about Jewel and think I'm obsessed as I listen to her almost exclusively (along with a few other artists here and there). Sorry if this is too long. What can I say, I'm excited to be here (rather than just hearing what's going on through Rob). Was it at a house? Was it an overnight thing? or just a few hours? Please give details. I doubt if I'm the only curious one. Maybe it's been covered before, if not please post. I'm about 30 miles south of Chicago and would be very interested in attending one in Illinois.
