I said, "Jewel, what are you doing here?" , and she told me she was going home for a new soil sample as she had lost hers touring in Australia. Then she told me while she was there she was going to do a jam session with some friends she met on the ship, and out stepped Paul George and Ringo. Turns out Paul and Jewel had written a bunch of new songs and they were going to try them out on the hometown Alaska crowd. REmember, it's a song, not a poem, so it's going to rhyme, and it's harder to write poetry that rhymes than that which doesn't. ++++++++ I CAN PRETEND The way she looks at him with empty eyes, but behind them you can see her soul the way it tears each time she lies the way she is no longer whole She hides behind her practiced smile Remembers all the love they shared but nothing good lasts more than a while She trusted him, she shouldn't have dared (chorus) Love is fleeting, you took my dreams And I wil never have faith in anyone again I tried then not to be hurt by you It looks to you like I wasn't, but I can pretend The way he tries not to remember Every time she looks at him and pretends her luck began in early November But always runs out before winter ends Her heart is torn out and forgotten Her future is nothing like it seemed Every time she thinks about him She wishes they had never been... (chorus) Love is fleeting, you took my dreams And I will never have faith in anyone again I tried then not to be hurt by you It looks like I wasn't, but I can pretend. It's really hard for me to write autobiographical songs, because I think that people will see them, and then they'll know so much about me, but lately it really hasn't mattered as much, so this song is the true story, straight and with no alterations for rhyming's sake. Nice to be talking to you all again :) I was really very exited when I stumbled upon this mailing list, cause a couple of months ago it was so hard for me to find anything Jewel related on the 'Net. Plus this list had the most original names ever (love that line from "I'm Sensitive" :). It's heartening to know that there are loads of people out there who enjoy her music as much as I do. I first came across Jewel when an e-mail friend mentioned going to one of her concerts (see, the 'Net is beneficial! :) She said it was 'brilliant'. So I saw the POY album in the record store, and on an impulse, bought it straightaway. I fell in love with it at once. What got to me was how she always sounded so pure and angelic in all her songs, and her lyrics were just so beautiful and poetic. I think "Painters", "Foolish Games", "Adrian", "Angel Standing By", "Amen" are real gems...heck,I might as well have listed the whole album! :) Unfortunately, due to the limited Jewel related stuff that can be found here, those are the only songs I've heard :( Jewel isn't all that popular in Malaysia, not everyone would recognise her name like how they would, say, Alanis Morissette or Mariah Carey (I like Alanis, but Mariah... :) Suffice to say, she never gets any airplay. Till this day, I haven't heard any of her songs on the radio (but the other day my friend said she heard "this song where the woman was saying she wanted to bash in her father's teeth", and I knew instantly it was "Daddy". Trust me to miss it :) So I jumped all over the house when I first saw WWSYS on video (it's cool!). And then I managed to catch a glimpse of her on the Billboard Awards Show, but only after her performance :( My sister, who's not a fan, got to hear her yodel :P So that was it, my little (actually, kinda long) essay about me and my love for Jewel. Two nights ago, MTV and VH1 aired YWMFM within ten minuites of each other. As I was watching them, I had a thought. Is there another meaning to the part of the video when Jewel is sliding out of her gown. I came to two possible meanings: 1) Pertaining to the song, Jewel by lying on the ground and coming out of her (slip?) can be analogous to the saying of "coming out of your shell" What I mean is that Jewel, who is playing any individual in modern day society has come to the conclusion that there actually is another person(2) who in this world is her complimentary soulmate. When this happens, The orginal person played by Jewel comes out of her tough exterior and lets the soulmate through her emotinal defenses(you know, those things we put up to lessen the pain of feeling.) 2) The second meaning is a litte less confusing. In the same part of the video as above, as Jewel is exiting her (slip, I'm not sure the acutal name of the clothing) it can be represented as her again coming out of her shell but not for emotional reasons but for growth. Every animal in the natural world grows some how and we are all natural animals. For Jewel's growth, it may be going from a more acccoustic to eletric sounding performance or any other possibility. The point being is that when we grow we change and Jewel in her own way is telling a story to the rest of us that it is time for change. Actually change may be the wrong word, maybe a more suitable word is evolution. An EveryDayAngel, Bryan. I come home and he lays a guilt trip on me because I didn't just tell him face to face that I didn't want him using my computer... I in response, told him that he never asked to use it in the first place which had ticked me off and I knew that once I kicked him off he'd be hurt and lay that guilt trip... I wanted to avoid that, hence the security. So you see... how does one deal with being the dominate male when it's your father that is beneath you??? And where does respect your elders come in??? I was watching Conan downstairs on Eastern time off my satellite dish and Jewel came on right afterwards, I couldn't believe it. So I raced around and found a blank tape, and stayed up so I could tape it off the local station. Was this a repeat of that "Friday Night" show? It seemed old, like from summer or something because of the songs in the jukebox. It was a faster, spunkier version which was nice to see. And I forgot who mentioned this before, but she was wearing black; a black blouse with like baby blue leather pants. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jan 1997 17:40:15 -0500 From: Chris Phillips Subject: Jewel mentioned on Singled out Last nightm while I was waiting for LoveLine to come on, Jewel's name was mentioned on Singled Out, that crappy dating show. THe man was in the chair & the topic was wealth, Jewel was at top, Poe was on bottom, the guy got rid of Jewel because he said "I don't like those high-maintenance women". MY question is, ?is jewel supposed to be the poor one, or the rich one? i'm thinkin rich b/c she's gotten more airplay & sales than poe & i'm thinking poor b/c of the whole iving in the van thing??? WARNING SIGNS: 1. a previous attempt can mean they might do it again 2. talk or thoughts about death or suicide -> any dicussion must be taken seriously -> don't joke around about suicide..this may make them think that you accept their decision. 3. changes in mood or personality -> persist over time 4. changes in eating or sleeping patterns -> things that are abnormal of the person 5. withdrawal from friends and activities -> sign of real danger 6. taking unusal risks -> serious danger to themselves or others 7. drug and alcohol abuse. 8. final arrangements- giving away prized possessions, making peace with friends suicides are not usually spontanous- signs are given out. friends and family just need to know what they are and how to deal with them AS A FRIEND THINGS TO DO ARE: 1. listen and care 2. if they tell you to keep it a secret- don't 3. involve other people to help you 4. the friend of a suicial person is not perfect. you have to admit you can't take sole responsibility for thier life FEW PEOPLE KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN A FRIEND IS SUSPECETED OF BEING SUICIDAL- THE CHOICES AVAILABLE ARE DIFFICULT- if often comes down to this : would you rather have an alive, possibly angry friend or a dead one? people to contact: the friends' parent, your own parents, your brothers or sisters, your friends brothers or sisters, teachers, counselors, clergy, family doctor, other trusted friends, youth center, police department, hospital emergency room, mental health clinic, family services organization, or a crisis hotline center -> people choose sucide because they see no easing of pain in their future. If we can offer them hope, they may choose to live instead of die. *information in this post was put together by all books offered on this topic at the charleston county library in goose creek, south carolina duff ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jan 1997 17:34:43 -0500 (EST) From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Interactive CD I am a BIG No Doubt and Jewel fan. When I first got LAUNCH, it was for Jewel. I really enjoyed the program and the interivew and performance by Jewel. Then, next month, I went in the store to buy some No Doubt stuff and as I was checking out, I saw No Doubt on the cover. I love Launch, I really do... :) Anyway, it is a *really* good program. If you get it, you can put the CD into your CD player, press #2 and it'll play the acoustic version of "Who Will Save Your Soul?". Most stores still have #7, #8, #9, along with #10, but if you don't have it, I think you can go to www.launchonline.com and order it. She was probably the rich one, because they probably see her as a new upcoming artist that will make lots of money, or think that she already has, considering that she went platnum. Also, you see her name around much more than you do Poe's. of course, I don't care what the topic was, he should have picked Jewel anyway (as long as it wasn't something bad). katherine ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jan 1997 16:50:52 -0600 From: "James H. We've had two public posts on this list about EDAs and their friends threatening or talking of suicide in the last month. I've run into more than a few very depressed EDAs on AOL and IRC. I cannot believe that with all the other NJC posts that happen on this list that THIS one gets a complaint!!??!! Duffs' post could very well save the life of one or more EDAs OR someone an EDA knows.
