As we all sit here anxiously awaiting the arrival of Jewel's next cd, I think of the fact that we are likely in for a disappointment. Now, before everyone jumps down my throat, let me explain myself. It is probable that we will have heard most if not all of the tracks that are going to be on her new cd by the time it is released. Now, you may think, "that's great I love such and such song" The problems are twofold. First, odds are that the versions of songs that are on the album are unlikely to be the same we are used to and fell in love with. This leads to the month of posts about "Why did she change such and such, I liked it bette the old way" Case in point, the talk about the changes to "faces of Love" or the new version of YWMFM. The second is the inevitable disappointment when your particular favortie s not on the album. As someone posted yesterday, he asked about Race Car Driver and said he thought it should be on the album, and probably will be disappointed if not. For those of you who think this is the deluded speculation of a sleepless EDA, ;et me give you my basis. I am a major Prince fan. Long before I;d ever heard Jewel's name, I was trading for Prince boots. Anyway, at one point, he wanted to release a cd entitled the Gold Experience. His record company would not release the album when he wanted. Well for a year while touring, he played songs from the supposed album. After a while the rumored track listing was out. Soon after, a group of internet fans created a tape, compiled from concert performances of this supposed track listing. Eventually, Warner Bros allowed him to release the album and what happened? Some of people's favorite tracks (Including mine) were curiously absent. Other songs had been changed drastically and very few thought in a good way either. Now, hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm willing to bet that many of you will be liastening to the Jewelstock versions ffar more than the "Goldfish Don't Bounce" versions (Hey I can hold out for my favorite cd title can't I?) Well anyway, just a little food for thought. Thanks for listening to my sleepless ranting. I like the live stuff and the stroies and just the palin fell of live songs (any wonder I'm compiling that PoY: Live tape?). I imagian that it will be the same for the next CD, espicialy for Nikos. She needs to experiment. If things work out, then more power to her if not, well we will still all love her. In any way this works out, Jewel will become a more talented performer. I am truly in awe of Jewel's new versions of her songs. I like the added "kick," it gives her great artistic expression and new dimension in her music. For the record, I don't want you to think I'm some person who is only into hard and fast music. If that were the case, I wouldn't have been a fan of Jewel for so long. Now, although you can do some things on an eletric guitar that you can't do on an accoustic and vice versa; comparing eletric performances to accoustic performances are not worthwile. We are comparing two totally different performances. For example Jewel played WWSYS eletrically at Z100's Jingle Ball and I loved it. Ok, I'm wating for Loveline to come on MTV and so I have the TV going so I don't lose track of time while typing away on my novel. So right now Singeled Out is on and (this might have been said before... I don't remeber). So they get to that part where they have to match ansewrs with the girl to get the date, and I'm not paying attention, but suddenly I hear Jewel so I trun to look (already knowing what is happening) so the question goes like this Jewel: Who Will Save Your Soul or Who Cares? The 1st two guys answerd with "Who Cares" and the 3rd guy with WWSYS. I can't remeber that the girl said. Ok, like me just say that this is the 2nd time this has happend to me. It requires only a portable computer at the soundboard to harmonize yourself. Youd' be surprised... Besides, I have a fourtrack recorder, so I can harmonize myself all I want :)... That's my love for the day, Kerry ps--I just heard an Ella Fitzgerald song I've never heard before. There's a great cd by Ella and Basie called 'The Sunny Side of The Street'. It's great if you love Ella. Anyway, there's a song on there called 'Tea for Two' which Jewel would cover beautifully. :) You guys let me know if you've heard it before? ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #18 **************************
