Hi Katherine - The Rugburns have 3 CD's (Mommy I'm Sorry, Morning Wood, and Taking the World by Donkey), and all are excellent. The latter is the newest, but Mommy I'm Sorry is the most Jewel-oriented (check out "Dick's Automotive" for the Alice's Restaurant style saga of Steve and Jewel: it's hallucinatory live). I'm afraid I'm not willing to tape them for you, not because I'm a meanie but because I have strong feelings against trading commercially-available recordings--tape these records, and you're only depriving the artists of their deserved revenue. It's much more clear than--ach, I'm not allowed to say that word, am I? For the record, Jeff, I agree with your impulse but disagree with this kind of restriction--than the issue of, er, unauthorized artist recordings. Tape a CD on that is currently for sale in record stores, and you're doing no less than pulling money out of the artist's pocket. I hope you see your way clear to buying one or all of these delightful recordings. In another bold atempt to acquire some rare Jewel paraphenalia (aforementioned diplay), one of the illustrious members who traveled to Times Square for New Year's Eve (only to arrive 16 hours late), made a valiant attmept to create a major diversion so that we might have a chance to pilfer. Now this member of the much-fabled clan of Tom's denies it emphatically, but the big red face, the huge grin, and Selena will all tell you that he was succesful in his attempt by turning over a lovely arranged display of several hundred CD's., right in front of the front door. While this may have worked well, the CD's blocked our escape route out the front-door and we were unsuccessful. Our merry band of thieves nad liars scattered throughout the store and exited as we found time. Gerrit hid under his hat and disappeared, Lauren acted like a tourist and sprinted down the road towards the nearest peepshow. Rich remained calm on the outside, as always, looking for freebie handouts to match the ones that his new favorite recordstore Tower had provided him. I'm not sure if Tom ever got out of there, but since he was able to drive us back to his parent's house on Staten Island, I feel confident in reporting that he is now missing...AGAIN!! (I'd bet that Selena kidnapped him and took him to Queens..or something like that), Selena blinded them with her radiant beauty and ran out the door, only to be pelted by still falling confetti, which caught fire immediately on impact. I'll try to keep this as brief as I can, but the events lasted over the course of more than 20 hours, from 3 p.m. yesterday to 11 a.m. today, so it will be kida long, and I decided to send this in pieces, a la Chuckie Dickens. 3 p.m. is when I got to Igor's house. Igor lives on sacred native land, in a secluded valley about 20 miles from Java Joe's. After a tour of camp, we decide to head down early to Java Joe's, because I wanted to give the collected Rugburns fan letters -- we had about 15, they were all terrific -- to the band. We got there about 6:30, and Nancy and Tom Morales already were there, with Nancy's 2 daughters. The band had just arrived and were starting to set up; the members were doing sound checks, so I had to wait until later to talk to the Band, but I introduced myself to the manager, Bob Duffey, and told him what I had done by way of collecting fan email from the band; he was very kind and excited. I had a full set of the emails printed out for Bob and for each member of the band, so I gave him his set. He gave Igor and me free promo vinyl copies of highlights from *Taking The World By Donkey*, with a full-color Donkey photo on the front and a tartan plaid back cover! *Not Available In Stores* Bob had lots to say about the band and his own enthusiasm for them; They have a growing following, especially in the Mid West, and they will be going out on tour again in March, after their West Coast swing ends in early February. I asked for permission to tape the show, and he kindly granted it (although I only got the first 3 and1/2 hours of it before I ran out of tape and battery power). I told him that I would be bringing as many novitiates and fans as I could to the local shows and would help alert the list to upcoming tour dates. He will be getting me their schedule, which I will post when I receive it. We also talked about Jewel and the KROQ show. Java Joe's clears the house before shows, and they were tossing everyone, but Bob told us to come back early and he would let us in to set up. Igor and I then went to have dinner, which I will discuss only upon infliction of torture or the possible *offer I can't refuse*, (or not at all if Igor tells the truth about last night.). I had been in a big song-writing slump for some time now, but I've been listening to Jewel more and more and I've been reading EDA mail, and suddenly I'm cured. I've been a Jewel fan ever since POY came out. My local (Cincinnati) alternative station played YWMFM while I was driving my car. I loved the song, I couldn't get it out of my head, and that voice... simply amazing! I didn't get the CD for a while, though. I boldly walked to the head of the line and knocked on the locked doors; John saw us and let us in, locking the doors behind us. Nancy and Tom had already done a plaid parlay into Joe's, and were camping on the floor in front of the stage, front row, playing cards. The events so far alone would have been a cool story, but this is 1997, and it's going to be a great year for me, Jewel, everyone on the list, and a lot of other people, too, and it gets much better. But I digress. After *reserving* two throne seats in front of the sound board and setting up my tape equipment, I went over to John Castro, the Rugs' bass player, and told him what I had done by way of collecting fan mail. He was equally as ingenuous as he had been last Saturday when I told him about the band's support on the list, and when I pulled out a file folder marked *Everyday Angels Fan EMail*, he was really really pleased; he grinned and sent his thanks to everyone! The crowd was let in about 8:30; lots of families with young kids, and lots of the kind of people that Igor likes to look at and talk about. I had emailed Cindy Lee Berryhill and her boyfriend Paul Williams (a legend in his own right, author of definitive books on Bob Dylan, publisher of Crawdaddy, Executor of the Estate of Phillip Dick, it's another whole post)about the show, and they both came. EDA Eric Garske also arrived. The show began in a very *almost acoustic* kicked-back manner, far different from the all rockin' bar show last Saturday in L.A. Steve didn't even use an expletive until about an hour into the show. BTW, we left at 2:30 a.m., so you'll have to get the fin-de-setlist details dirctly from Tom and Nancy. Steve introduced and sang *You Were Meant For Me*, at which point I figured that there would not be a Jewel sighting that night, so I settled in for the rest of an anticipated mellow night of Coffee-House Rugburns. At about 10:30, that all changed. To be continued.... I start to get a litttle nutsy, reaching to find my camera, and fumbling nervously through all the junk I brought with me. I tried to photograph her behind the counter, but my camera won't fire, because it was too dark where she was standing for the auto focus and flash to work on my Murphy camera-control chip. Then, I realize I've left the prototype EDA Jewel banner, with Phil and Tom's angel on it, in the Trunk of Igor's car; I panic, (this is the short version) run out to retrieve it, and breatlessly return to my seat. Jewel is about 30 feet from us, and when she glances in my direction, I smile, unfurl the banner, and hold it up for her to see. She grinned, and we exchanged *thumbs-up* gestures. Steve sings another song, and Igor, Eric and I are getting antsy. Nancy looks back to us from the *front row*, mouthing {{she's here}}. Igor says, "How do we get her out?" I say I know, and after the song ends, I yell for *Silver Lining*. Not only is that a great, new, as-yet unreleased Rugs song, but as we already learned from shy Jamie's first explosive post yesterday, She sang that one on Wednesday with Steve at the New Year's Eve show. It probably had no effect at all, but Steve then started to tell a Jewel story about how she had driven him to a local watering hole the previous night and recited the denouement. He then introduced her to the crowd, telling us that they would sing a few songs together. They did. She came on to a roaring approval. I was in full *she's 20 feet away* Jewelglow fever. I got a few pictures (the roll of film was almost finished, and I wanted to save a few shots for later, but as it turns out I unfortunately didn't need to, because ..., well that's for later. She and Steve shared the mike for 4 songs. They did "Silver Lining" (a future classic); "I Thought I Saw You Last Night"; "Old Lover's House"; and, in the song that best showed Jewel's range and apparent healthy recovery from bronchitis, "Daddy, She's A Goddess." A fine little set, indeed (I mean the SONGS, Igor!). Jewel left the stage, and Steve said something to the effect that *we'll have her back on later, after we've all had too much to drink*. Alas, that was not to occur (the return, that is; I don't know nuthin about no drinkin', gotta ask Tom M.). Fortunately for me, that was not the end of *Jewel Content* for the evening. I looked over to the area near the counter, where the FOTB (friends of the band) hang out, and Jewel was standing there, talking, hugging friends, listening to the continuation of the still-mellow Rugburns' set. I asked Igor if we should go up to her then; he persuaded me to wait, on the theory that we might get only one chance, and it would be better to approach Her after the rest of Her admirers had finished, when we could get more "quality time" (words to that effect; most of the quotes I shall give will be "words to that effect"). A few songs later, the Rugs announced that they would take a brief break. Remembering Jamie's cautionary tale about Jewel fleeing in a limo on New Years Eve after her set and before the end of the show, I knew that this was the time to approach. I said to Igor, "I'll bring the camera and the banner; you take my picture of Jewel with me and the banner, and we'll get one with you in it, too." I used my ex-New Yorker crowd manuevering skills to snake my way over to the java counter, and I got to Jewel. Well, I got to about 3 feet away; she was talking to Steve and to Stinky's parents, and there were 3 little girls in front of me who wanted to say hi. They soon left, and I finally got up to Jewel herself. We smiled broadly at each other. I told Her that it was a real thrill for me to meet Her. I was holding the file folder in which I had brought the email for the Rugburns, and I told Jewel what I had done about asking for and getting fan email from the EDAs over the course of the previous day. Jewel was really excited about that; she turned around to Steve, who was talking to Stinky's parents (Igor later said he thinks it was John's parents, and maybe he's right, but by this time, Igor was nowhere to be seen!), and She said "Steve, are you hearing this, this is great!" Steve was locked in conversation with the his band-in-laws and didn't have time to answer, but I told Jewel that I had a copy of all the emails for all the band members and that I already had given John and Bob copies, and I gave Her Steve and Stinky's copies, which She promised to give to them. Next, I unrolled the banner, and showed it to Jewel, Steve and Stinky's parents. They were REALLY impressed. I gave them the history of the banner, which I wiil describe in the next Part of this saga. To be continued.... Larry ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #6 *************************
