MistyBC@aol.com writes: << has anyone else found jewel in books? >> I've always felt that the character of Clarisse Mclellan in Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451 is very Jewel-like. Perhaps a bit more starstruck, but similar. Here's a part of her description: "Her face...was fragile milk crystal with a soft and constant light in it. It was not the hysterical light of elcectricity but -- what? But the strangely comfortable and rare and gently flattering light of the candle." Kind of a pretty passage, I think. A quote from the character herself: "But most of all," she said, "I like to watch people. Sometimes I ride the subway all day and look at them and listen to them. I just want to figure out who they are and what they want and where they're going..." It reminds of how Jewel said she used to sit on a park bench and just watch people and make up imaginary lives for them. In any case, it's a great great book and I recommend it (and Bradbury's other stuff) to everyone. Please don't be turned off by the science fiction backdrop or the cheesy adaptions you may have seen on cable; they shouldn't obscure the true greatness of his writing. Bye for now, Justin --whose face would never ever be described as fragile milk crystal. : ) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 00:23:30 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: Re: SJC: jewel in books! Or the fact that some of you might been forced to read it in school. I have to read it in my third year of High School. I was surprized when the teacher started handing out a Ray Bradbury book. I felt like they where saying "here, read something you'll acutally like. And I did. At my school at that point we had the classes set up so that we would have 4 of them one day and 4 the next. I go the book in the 3rd period of the day, read straight through that class, and then proceded to read stright through my Spanish class (I never did anything in Spanish but still managed to get b's and c's throug out my 2 years in it. "how do you do it" they ask ;]). By the end of the school day I was done with the book. The scary thing is that over half of the people in the class never even finished it (and to think that people are becomeing dumber with each passing generation, that is truly scary). The point is that the book is very good. Clarisse is my favorite charater (the poor ill-fated dear) and I can see a little of her in Jewel (not vise versa caus the book was writin quite some time ago). And of course I am always trying to get people to read more, and when they read to try to get into more then just Stephen King and the like. It is a short book with larg preint BTW, so it shouldn't be all that intimidating for those of you that read more E-mail then they do the printed page. Anyways, that's all from me. - -Ashe (ignor the typos) Mayfair ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 02:01:06 -0400 From: "Miguel A. Let me tell you, it was almost impossible to find it! First I went to my favorite used CD store, and they were out of it, both new and used. In fact, the guy checked with their other two stores, and neither of those had it either. Then, I went to Media Play (kinda like a Best Buy, but with books instead of appliances), and they were out. Then I went to the Blockbuster Music store, even though I knew that i would pay through the nose for it there. Well, guess what? Nope, not there either! At least the clerk was nice ("I hope you can find it, it's a great CD!"). Finally went into the mall (ugh!). Checked Camelot music - zilch. I almost gave up hope, but found it in the other Blockbuster Music, the one in the mall. Price.....(drumroll please).....$14.99!! And that was on sale!! Without the tax, no less!! Yeesh. Oh well, my friend is worth it. On the topic of strange places to hear her, I heard her at Home Depot the other day. And, I heard her at Wal-mart before Xmas. I guess she's okay for Wal-mart, but Sheryl Crow isn't. :-p Blecchh! i just drank out of the Burger King cup sitting at my desk from lunch today, thinking that I would get a squirt of Coke, only to remember with the first swallow that I had gotten a chocolate shake, and now it's warm and melted and generally reminiscent of cod liver oil. aghghuaghughagh (or something like that). Some NJC: does anyone have the latest BareNakedLadies CD, the live one, and can you tell me if it's any good? Sometimes live CDs are okay, and sometimes they are just bad recordings of the artist's studio stuff. For instance, Jewel is a good live CD candidate, but New Order isn't. Any reviews would be appreciated. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 15:55:01 -0500 From: KarenFL5@aol.com Subject: Secret Santa thanks...Mark Would like to send big thanks to Australia EDA Mark....my secret santa :))).....what a neat surprise! The three shows we have for that tree are the Fairfax Va show, the NYC Jingle Ball Show and the LA KROQ Show, plus a few surprises. I plan on making a "branch call" about January 15th, after most of the colleges have started up again. I am not certain when the tree for the 5/18/96 Boston show will start up, but I think it may be during the same time frame.
