It's -really- windy out here in SoCal. There's a fire burning about 40 miles away and it's smelling pretty good outside. [cough cough] Anyway, yesterday's LA Times had a review of the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas. First of all, no pix of Jewel. There's a small Fiona Apple pic to tell you that there's a story inside and the two pix inside are of 311 and Bush. The headline reads "Garbage, Fiona Apple Are Simply Smashing." Apparently, they didn't think a whole lot of Jewel--she's only mentioned twice in the article: <<...Between Amos' practically posessed version of "Cornflake Girl" and Garbage's riveting "Stupid Girl," Sheryl Crow's lackluster "If It Makes You Happy" and Jewel's folksy "Who Will Save Your Soul," it was clear that the sole trait these artists share is gender...[6 big paragraphs about Garbage and Fiona Apple]...The rest of the sets were tame, yet competent...Jewel made the transformation from rough-edged coffehouse crooner to slick performer, delivering a new, country-steeped hoe-down, but only a rousing, lighthearted display of her yodeling skills won over the crowd...>> That's it. A whole article, two sentences w/ whats-her-face in it. Thought you'd might like to know. In the past month (almost) that I've been here I've bought two albums by women I've never really listened before. I never would've thought about it unless they were brought up by Jewel fans. (I can admit my ignorance, after all were all flawed, right?.?) I bought and enjoy thoroughly an album from Tori Amos and Fiona Apple. -Fiona, by the way, was just recently on a show called Love Line (Mtv) where sexual quandaries are made public by call in audiences, then answered by the show's regular doctor and comedian (<---subjective) with a little help from the celebrity guest. Fiona seems to have a head on her young shoulders, but it doesn't seem that she has a very pleasant sexual life. None of my business though!!!- Anyway, it dawned on me that I'm conversing with a very eclectic group and I should be milking it as much as I can! What about, oh, say Thriller, or... well, anything by the Bee-Gees? Can you honestly tell me that in 120 years Macarena is going to be remembered as the musical high point of the 90's? That is the defining moment of true art - that it carries its meaning not only to us, but that the issues it speaks to (Sex, drugs, rock n' roll, lostlove, etc.) may be universal to either our culture or those outside our culture, and that the song speaks to that issue in such a way that others in the coming years will find meaning and value in it. > Kurt Cobain is widely regarded as a very important musician. Nirvana was a band that no one would hire, and no one thought was "cool" until their stunning album Nevermind and its success. Don't get me wrong - I liked Nirvana, I respect Cobain, but how much of the "genius" attributed to him is because he killed himself in such a tragic fashion?(everything to live for, not the shotgun) It is the paradox of Cobain's life that will live on past the music - our kids will listen to Nirvana on Classic Gold 90's hour every sunday morning, midnight to 6 am, or on so-called "Classic Rock" stations, squeezed in between "Macarena" and Stone Temple Pearl Jam songs. As far as the popularity=good music - I would tend to agree with you. What I am talking about, is not commercial success, but artistic success. But I don't think Atlantic is looking to appease the fans. And a lot of times they are reluctant to release a live album, especially if there are songs that will be on an upcoming album. Live albums do not sell well and Atlantic would probably consider it a pain to put out a live album..... The existance of Nirvana was as important as any other band ever. They turned Soundgarden from Metal into Modern Rock, the ywere responsible for what Metallica has done on thei new record.
