Crutch, died today. It's a tragic day for me and the rest of the island. I know most of you don't care about this, but it's Guam's equivalent of a legendary musician like John Lennon or Jerry Garcia dying. J.D. Crutch stood above the rest of Guam's musicians like an angel above a waste site. Most of Guam's music is sappy, corny, and IMO, crappy, but a lot of people like it. J.D. Crutch, however, was able to put emotion and meaning into his songs, and carry a beautiful tune as well. He gave us 25 years of great music and was loved by the entire island, and it's a tragedy that he won't be making more music. I know that this isn't relevant to any of you, but it's just such a sad day that I had to share it with you all. You've been such a part of my life for the last month that not sharing would be like keeping a secret from a loved one. Thanks for listening. Cheers, Leo the mourning tropical angel Note: I tried to send a similar message through another email account, but I don't think it made it to the list. The 60-minute special will review the bands, trends, styles, controversies and events that made the headlines in 1996. This year's program will be intercut with commentary from artists Sheryl Crow, Beck, Brandy and Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, who will reflect back on their own year in music, as well as other big stories of 1996. Now if there was a thing where people can vote on who wins, that would be a good way to do it, but this is based on airplay and such. Now that's just unfair. Obviously No Doubt got more airplay with alla those "Buz Clips" things. MTV overpalys those things so much It makes me sick (I'm actually tierd of watching the "Don't Speak" vid, and that is just odd). Jewelstock... Connell vents >Hi all, > Lately things have really gone down hill for me regarding >the list. In an effort to be understood better, I post this: I nearly came out of my seat reading this. I'm pretty quiet most of the time about list squabbles, figuring that they'll die down pretty quickly without any permanent damage. I even stayed out of the latest Harris go-round :-) because (1) Dennis & co. can defend themselves better than I can and (2) more people should take the opportunity to interact with Dennis, one of the prime movers on this list. Anyone who wants a list of the good things Dennis has done for us, write to me (or Mike Connell:-) privately. But when I see that Alan, one of the truly selfless and generous people in the EDA community, has been browbeaten into departing from the general list, I have to speak up. I see Mike has already spoken in Alan's defense (defense? Good ghod, like he needs defending!) but I 'solidarity' has it's place, and I'm going to vent briefly too. This is mostly to the 1% of people out there who don't think before screaming "me, me, me" (I don't think I've ever received a nasty comment like Alan has); to the rest of my friends, don't take this personally, OK? Others can probably provide the definitive roll call of "things that would have been different -- and worse -- without Alan's presence", but just a few major points need to be addressed: (1) Without Alan's tireless efforts and late nights in the editing room, there WOULD HAVE BEEN NO Jewelstock tapes. While not the only person involved in the process, Alan spent a crushing amount of time piecing together a coherent set of performances from master tapes which suffered from missing pieces during changeovers, inaudible comments, and other things. None of these were the fault of any particular person, of course, and Alan could have been excused from bothering with them on the grounds that they were unimportant to the overall tape set. Yet things like audience interaction, completeness, and performance integrity were important to him, and he labored mightily to make sure that the tapes were as good as they could be. (2) Alan has always, within the limits of his abilities, been helpful and generous to those needing tapes. Keep in mind that he's not a tape tree! He's assisted and seeded a few of the excellent trees we've been lucky enough to have during the existence of this list, but he does NOT have the time and resources to make tapes for any person who thinks that being on this list gives him/her a lien on someone else's resources. The list has always provided a mechanism for people to get extra copies of tapes. I myself have volunteered copies to innumerable people, and have taken on additional leaves AFTER the JewelStock deadline (through Mike's coordination). (3) Alan is not Superman; he cannot make the clock run backwards. Asking him to perform tasks after the cutoff time, after he's already done the deed, is ludicrous and unfair to him. I've seen his replies, and I thought he was polite, even regretful, that he couldn't do something, even though it was completely beyond his responsibility or even ability. It saddens me greatly to see one of the true Angels on this list being forced into semi-retirement because of the selfishness and insensitivity of a small handful of people. As Mike said, THINK before you flame. Then write to Mike (hahahaha! You'll be a bit more humble afterward). If you haven't read Mike's last two posts, go do it. NOW. You guys are just fuckin rude. Alan is in no way "a jewel cop" or some sort of man that wants to keep her all to himself. he wants to make sure that certain things, such as the JS tapes, are kept all to ourselves, meaning anyone on the list. He his fulfilling wishes of a higher authority. These tapes, along with the concert, were a gift from Jewel and Lenendra, and then from the people who made the origional copies (Alan included) to us. Obviously the fact that there are so many of these out there, should prove to you thyat noone is cop, you can get them anywhere. Alan has made his share of copies, and just because he is not making any more doesn't made him some kind of "cop". Grow up will you. We wouoldn't even have things like this if if wasn't for Alan. Do you, think that he went through all the troulble to get permission for these tapes, just to keep them to himself. THat's ridicoulous, and so are you if that's what you think. Alan is a great guy. IMO he has shared so much with us, and made many things possible for us. I can say in all honesty that if it wasn't for Alan, I would not have been at the Conn. concert last week. He gave me directions, details, places to meet people, and all that other great stuff + some more. He even invited EDA's to spend time in his home that day, but due to weather it turned out to be best if people left to go home early. He is not greedy, he has offered us so much, including his home, (in my case). You guys (remember this is to the 1%) piss me off. The distributor is in charge of everything past the masters, mostly, including promotion, but isn't always very obvious about it. The biggest clue (normally) that I can find with any regularity is to check the credits page and see if the manufacturing is done by the same company or subsidiary. (It might also be on the pressing data on the CD, but often that's now encoded to the point of us mortals not being able to read it-- bar codes) BTW, did this just stem off the "best new artist" category thing? Whoever made the comment that it didn't have to be a first record of any sort is right... It's pretty much "first year of charting," I think... REM is another example... The Chronic Town EP was out in... 83(?)... They took "best" in 87 or so, right? (Life's Rich Pageant, was it?) with multiple releases in betewen... In the morning, I woke up in Cincinnati for a meeting and found her on a local radio station (YWMFM). Actually heard a clip of YWMFM in a commercial for a station on the way back from Cincy to Nashville on 96.1 in Owensboro, Kentucky. You know, one of those "Here are the songs you'll be hearing this hour" voice-overs, then about four songs clipped together. I thought it was cool that she was being used to promote the station. Then, after I get home, I turned on the TV to see that Melissa Etheridge is being featured on VH-1. Half watch, half finish reading the new Michael Crichton book "Airframe" (only so-so, wouldn't recommend rushing out to get it), when I hear Jewel's voice talking about ME. Pop my head up, but only lasts a second or two. At commercial, VH1 says they're replaying the ME Duets thing with Jewel. Excellent!! Pop in my videotape with various Jewel things on it, wait for the moment Jewel comes out (right as Friends is starting), then start recording. Switch to Friends, then switch back at 7:30. Stop recording when Duets is over, then channel-surf until I suddenly see Jewel on MTV at the Winter Lodge. Damn- I missed the first couple of seconds, but immediately recover to fire up the VCR again. At least I caught most of the song. Final item. Watch ER (BTW, this is why I'm never at the EDA chatroom on AOL. Can I suggest a time change? How about 9:00 EST/8:00 CST?), then get ready for bed. Only I'm two-thirds the way through Airframe, so I say what the hell. A couple of hours later, it's two in the morning, I'm finishing up the book, when the 100.1 FM plays YWMFM. Only it's not the new version, it's the rocking version thats on the Everyday Angels Tape. Wow. He's not GOD, only but an angel, and you expect him to remind you of everything like he was your mother! I think everyone should be THANKING Alan not CUSSING HIM OUT! And if I say anymore I might START YELLING FOR THE REST OF THE LETTER! And I thought ALL ( Some of you are!) EDAs were nice....Hmmph... :( A Very Disturbed Angel, Erica ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 20:43:07 GMT From: "Terrence R. I was extremely lucky enough to be able to see Jewel this past Tuesday in Houston at a private performance held by a local radio station. I must say, she is even more beautiful in person than any picture I've ever seen. It was my first time to see her, and definitely won't be the last. She only played a 45 minute set because she wasn't feeling good. Said she had a cold, which I'm sure now, is the reason for her bronchitis. She sang perfect though, better than any recording I've ever heard, but in between songs, she coughed some, and when she talked, it was obvious she wasn't feeling too good. She was supposed to do an autograph session after the show, but canceled that. I saw her climb into the mini-van she rode to the show in, and once she stepped in, she instantly fell down on the back seat, laying with her eyes shut. I felt so bad seeing her that way. She definitely was serious about her health. The DJ's from the station said she felt the fans deserved to see her perform at this show, so that's why she did it, although she had been feeling bad for a couple weeks already. She IS truly an angel. I hope she gets well soon. She even talked to me...well sort of. I yelled out a request after her first song, I asked for "Race Car Driver", and she came back with something like, "I can always tell who my real fans are". I thought that was cool. Of course, since this was strictly a promotional sort of gig, she only played songs off her CD, except Absence of Fear, and the Cold Song (which I thought fit perfectly for that evening). All in all, it was a great show. She told several cute stories, a couple of which I actually hadn't heard before, and seemed in great spirits considering everything. I hope she comes back to Houston soon. She even had a "nice" comment AND gesture to make about the barmaid's in the back running the espresso machine (or some other loud thing) all throughout her first song (Near You Always). You can imagine how that sounded. Jewel took care of it though, as I never heard it the rest of the night. Hmmm..... Needless to say, the audience laughed a bunch. And after she found out it wasn't being broadcast live on the radio, that was funny too. Jewel has a great sense of humor, is extremely gorgeous, and of course a VERY talented musician/writer. As if I ever doubted any of that anyway. 45 minutes was only enough to scratch the surface of her talents. I hope when she comes back, she's able to play a longer set, which I'm sure had she felt better, she would have. Well, that's my summary of my first in person Jewel experience. I can only imagine what everyone at Jewelstock felt like. Like they were in heaven I imagine...of course she IS an angel right? :) Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 15:08:58 -0600 (CST) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu Subject: Fons...are you out there? Hey Fons, Just wanted to say thanks for your advice about how to get through to 96.5 The fax thing worked...got a call from Lori Tues. morning. So I was there. Was the guy who yelled out Race Car Driver. I knew she wouldn't play it, but I just had to do that. So how did you like the show? I couldn't find your address, thus the reason for my posting to the list. As you already know, these tapes are meant for distribution to EDA's only (members of this list are EDA's). If you do not have a copy of Jewelstock and you want one, and you should want one because these tapes kick serious donkey, here's what you should do: Spend some time reading the list. Get to know the members, we're pretty much all nice people :) Eventually you'll come across a thread you like or a person who's emails you enjoy and you can converse with them privately and make friends. That's when you move in for the kill! Ask your new EDA friend if he/she/it would make you a copy of the Jewelstock tapes, most of us would be glad to do so for a fellow EDA who has taken interest in the list. The reason I personally will not just dub my copies of Jewelstock to just anyone is because I don't want someone to just pop onto the list for one day, get the tapes to make a bootleg, and split. However, I am more than willing to copy the tapes for true Jewel fans and EDA's. By following these steps you should soon get your very own copy of Jewelstock without having to beg, plead, cuss, or insult. I would also like to take this time to invite any newbies who has any questions on Jewel or this mailing list to contact me privately at Sinjin@ecn.com and ask me anything you want. No question is a stupid question (unless it is coming from Dennis Harris), so if you're unsure of anything send me some email and I'll help you out. Welcome newbies, Sinjin! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 15:18:36 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: Re: now NJC: Re: ...& "new" No Doubt > >I don't have the CDs to check, but it's possible that Interscope was the >record label for both, but that Tragic Kingdom has a bigger distributor. Well, Tragic Kindom has both the Interscope AND Trauma Records stamps. So I guess Trauma could be a big label... but I doubt it consedering I've heard of Interscope and never of Trauma. - -Ashe (ignor the typos) Mayfair ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 15:26:30 -0600 (CST) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu Subject: Jewel is Gorgeous...part 2 By the way, I wore my Jewelstock shirt to the show in Houston and as Jewel was leaving the stage, I told her "Everyday Angels love you Jewel!" She was looking down the whole time leaving the stage (I guess since she felt bad), and when I said that, she looked up, saw me and the shirt, and gave this really sweet smile to me, then put her head back down and proceeded out of the club. That made me feel really good on the inside. I guess Jewelstock speaks for itself, but it IS very obvious that Jewel really appreciates us and our spreading of her music to other potential fans. I didn't even think she would hear me say that, but to acknowledge it the way she did, especially feeling as bad as she was, really says alot about her. I was told by one of my friends that spoke to her before the show, that Jewel said she had already taken some medicine before she even got on stage that evening. She's remarkable in every sense of the word. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 16:34:47 -0500 From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: From Alan Hi, Wow! I'm overwhelmed at all the nice private response I've gotten. I just want to say I have no intention of leaving. A few confused angry people could never ruin this for me. I just think its best for me to chill for a while. Thats all. Possibly adressing the JS Tapes(& others) somehow in the updated 1997 FAQ could help reduce future hard feelings. I don't know. I said this to Duff & Mike privately, but I'll say it to all of you. I simply got sick of perpetuating the myth that everything is beautiful here in EDA Land. In truth, everyday its growing a little more like the rest of the world. Regardless, the positive FAR outwieghs the negative for me. I need a vacation, preferably a tropical one...
